The Gendarmenmarkt square is the site of an architectural interest with notable buildings such as the Berlin concert hall and the French & German Churches and a statue of poet Friedrich Schiller. It was built in the 1600's by by Johann Arnold Nering as the Linden-Markt and rebuilt by Georg Christian Unger in 1773. Its name is derived from the cuirassier regiment Gens d'Armes, who had stables here until 1773. The present buildings were restored after being damaged in WWII

Erected in the 15th century, it was the place in October 1497 for the wedding between the King of Portugal, Don Manuel 'the Fortunate' and Doña Isabel, daughter of the Catholic Monarchs, which was attended by the Queen. The present church was built in 1546, but was seriously damaged in 1664 after the war between Spain and Portugal. At the end of the 17th century it was rebuilt.
