This species must be close to Malacocarpus ottonis and the two are often confused. The original illustrations are so different, however, that we believe they must be distinct. Echinocactus linkii spinosior (Forster, Handb. Cact. 301. 1846) is only a name. The name Cereus linkii Lehmann appears in Pfeiffer's Enumeratio (48. 1837) as a synonym of Echinocactus linkii, but it does not occur thus where he cites it (Nov. Act. Nat.
