The introduction of 16mm direct reversal safety film and cameras in the 1920s, really saw amateur filmmaking begin and then the development of local, regional fllm societes. In the 1940s and 50s, smaller 8mm film which had been released in 1932 and lighter hand-held cameras, saw cine filmmaking became a popular hobby or pasttime for many and this continued into the 60s. In the 1970s Super 8mm updated 8mm by increasing the amount of film that captured the image by nearly 30%.
