It is one of the few specimen that were part of the collection of local factory owner Hermann Jacques Gruson (1821-1895) during his lifetime. The Gruson greenhouses opened to the public on 12 April 1896. This mature specimen grows on arid Santa Catalina Island in the Sea of Cortez off the east coast of the Baja California Peninsula in Mexico. There the tree is commonly called Torote in Spanish.
