As recorded above, however, there is considerable variation in the size of the spicules of//, bi/amellata, and it is conceivable that the new species and //. flaccida may even yet prove to be identical; and possibly also synonymous with H. dancoi. The tip of each tooth, an unworn crown of about 8 mm. length, projects from a thin investing coat of cement. The South Australian specimen has much more massive, fusiform teeth. The smallmouth population in the Tongue is thriving and with increased interest is providing excellent angling opportunities. Growth rates of the Tongue River smallmouth are comparable to Missouri smallmouth streams (Clancey 1980).
