Editorial use only. Erection of The Burns Monument commenced in 1820 and it was opened to the public in 1823. The foundation stone was laid by Alexander Boswell, son of James Boswell. The monument now takes up a central place in the Burns National Heritage Park in Alloway just south of Ayr and has become a place of pilgrimage for admirers of Scotland’s National Poet. It is possible to enjoy spectacular views of Burns’ beloved Alloway from the roof of the Monument.
