WEEK 1
O’Neil throws 4 touchdowns in debut;
Marblehead routs Concord-Carlisle 25-6
By Ryan Vermette
Marblehead Weekly News
Back in the preseason, senior wide receiver Zander
Dandorth said that his team was not satisfied with last
year’s Division Three Super Bowl Win.
They proved it last Friday night.
The Magicians put on quite the opening act in their
season debut last Friday against Concord-Carlisle, taking
down the Patriots by a final score of 25-6.
The score was not indicative of how dominant
Marblehead really was on both offense and defense
throughout the night. Concord-Carlisle started the game
with a first play pass by quarterback Holdon Miller that
was thought to get Concord into Marblehead territory but
was ruled an offensive pass interference. That first play
of the game would shift the momentum as the Patriot’s
offense went three and out and would not be able to get
anything going offensively for the next three and a half
quarters.
After a Concord-Carlisle punt, junior quarterback
Myles O’Neil stepped onto the field to make his debut as
the Magicians starting signal caller. His first throw of the
day was a completed nine yard slant to get it to second
down and one. Marblehead would run the ball for the next
few plays and advance the line of scrimmage up to the
45 of Concord-Carlisle. After a couple of short gains and
an incomplete pass, O’Neil’s offense found themselves
in a fourth down and long from Concord-Carlisle’s 29
yard line, and Coach Jim Rudloff decided to test his new
quarterback’s nerves early, and it paid off big time.
With three receivers lined up on his left side, O’Neil
dropped back in the pocket, stepped up to avoid the
pressure coming at him on the flank, and lobbed a ball
towards the back left pylon in the endzone. Wide receiver
Shane Keough was in a one on one matchup, with no safety
help and had position on the defensive back. O’Neil put
the ball directly in a spot where only Keough could come
down with it as the receiver climbed the invisible ladder,
grabbing the ball over the defending back, and holding on
as he came to the ground.
Touchdown Marblehead.
Concord-Carlisle got the ball back with 6:32 left in
the first quarter and went on a drive that lasted over ten
minutes. The Magicians defense could not get off the field
as they got the Patriots to multiple 3rd downs but couldn’t
keep them from converting. Concord-Carlisle got up to the
Marblehead 12 yard line and had a chance to tie the game
but an incomplete pass brought up fourth down. With a
fourth and goal from the 12 yard line, Head Coach Josh
Reed liked what he had been seeing from his offense and
Marblehead’s Aidan Tardie, left, Connor Cronin, center, and Andy Palmer, right, stop the progression of
Concord-Carlisle’s Blake Newcomb as Christian Pacheco comes in to assist.
decided to roll the dice. Miller dropped back and attempted
a back left corner throw into the endzone that sailed 5
yards to far out of bounds, resulting in a turnover on downs
for the Patriots.
The Magicians made them pay quickly as they stormed
down the field, scoring a touchdown in two plays. First,
O’Neil ran with the ball outside and to the right, with
Conner Cronin trailing him. Baiting the defender, O’Neil
waited until the defensmen was about to tackle him before
pitching the ball to Cronin, who exploded down field for
34 yards. O’Neil would feed the ball to Cronin again on the
very next play as the wide receiver ran about ten yards out
before cutting towards the sideline when O’Neil slung a
lead pass to Cronin. He made the catch and turned upfield,
breaking tackles and trucking defenders on his way to a 29
yard touchdown to put the Magicians up 13-0.
“I knew my pattern, I mean I always get open cmon,”
Cronin joked. “No one stopped me in the open field so I
just lowered my head and got across the goal line.”
In the third quarter, O’Neill threw a touchdown pass
that might already be the play of the year. Doing his best
Patrick Mahomes impression, O’Neil saw two defenders
blitzing off the left side of his line and was able to slide
right and start running up toward the line of scrimmage as
he launched a ball from Concord-Carlisle’s forty yard line
that found receiver Andy Palmer, who was wide open.
“I saw a bunch of guys coming at me so I knew I had
to get out of there,” O’Neil said. “I saw my receiver Andy
Palmer, and he just caught it, I trusted him.”
Marblehead impressed in the first half of their season
opener, but it’s offense slowed in the second half, turning
the ball over on fourth down multiple times and not being
able to move the ball as effectively as they did in the first
half. O’Neil noted that if they want the same outcome as
last year, they will need to keep improving.
“I thought we played a great first half, but second half
I feel like we gotta pick it up more,” the quarterback said.
“Coach was saying the same thing that I was saying, just
because we’re up at halftime doesn’t mean we can slow
down, we gotta keep the energy rolling.”

WEEK 2
Lynnfield and Marblehead help
remind us it’s more than a game
By Ryan VeRmette
maRBlehead Weekly neWs
As quarterback Myles O’Neil knelt the
ball for the final time, Marblehead players
jumped up and down and put their hands in
the air, letting out shouts of pure emotion as
they ran towards their teammate
Jack Scogland.
Though not many in
the stands at Piper
Field knew it, the
Magicians
played
with
heavy hearts that evening. Earlier in the day,
Scogland’s father passed away unexpectedly.
The lineman’s father was a youth baseball
and football coach for nearly all of the players
on Marblehead’s roster. Lynnfield head coach
Pat Lamusta found out just before kickoff
and knew that after the game, win or lose, his
team needed to be there for Scogland.
After hands were shaken and everybody
started to empty from the stands, Lamusta
told his team to bring it in at midfield as
Marblehead head coach Jim Rudloff
did the same. Each coach spoke with
the other team in the combined
huddle before Lynnfield and
Marblehead fists were raised
up into the air together for a breakdown.
“Family on three… one, two, three,
family,” both teams shouted.
Though both teams may not have been
familiar with each other or even know one
another, everybody came together to support
Scogland and lift him up because, as Lamusta
notes, it’s bigger than football.
“That’s tough to fight through; it’s an
emotional rollercoaster for a team to go
through,” Lamusta said. “They’re a very
strong team, they’re going to make it through,
but the point of the breakdown was to remind
everyone that there’s something bigger here.”
Though Lynnfield lost the game by a
score of 26-18, Lamusta recognized that the
outcome was secondary to everything else
going on that night. There will always be
more football games to be played, and though
football is everything for these kids and
coaches, the stats, the scores, and the wins
and losses all become an afterthought on an
emotional night such as this.
Despite learning of his father’s passing
hours before the game, Scogland, who is a
lineman for Marblehead, told coach Rudloff
that he was going to suit up.
Not only was he available for the game,
he ended up playing on both sides of the
field in what was truly an amazing display of
courage and determination. His play on both
sides of the line of scrimmage was crucial
in Marblehead’s victory that evening and
he even proceeded to block a point after an
attempt by Lynnfield.
“Amazing kid, it was amazing that he was
able to do that,” said Rudloff. “He’s one of
the first guys in for us; oddly enough, the kid
that plays in front of him was the first one
hurt, so he goes in and plays both ways the
whole game.”
It was an incredible performance by
Scogland, and after the game, Marblehead’s
players yelled out in happiness, and in
sorrow, and in joy, and in grief as they
huddled around Scogland, each taking turns
hugging him, and holding his helmet close to
theirs.
Football is family, not just to Marblehead,
but to every team that they see standing on
the other sideline, and the Pioneers recognize
that.
“We’re kind of a larger football family,
and we wish them well as they navigate this
difficult time,” Lamusta said.
“A lot of class on the other side of
the field,” Rudloff said in response to the
Pioneers showing of support. “The Lynnfield
kids were phenomenal, they played a great
game but even more so, their behavior and
their composure, and the way they just
embraced us after the game, I’ll never forget
that.”
While the Pioneers fell to Marblehead,
quarterback Tyler Adamo had a decent
showing through the air. Adamo was 15-24
for 130 yards with a touchdown and an
interception. Samuel Gazit led the Pioneers in
receiving with 62 yards while Robert Marley
III led the team in rushing with 86 yards.
Lynnfield’s defense got the scoring started
early in the first quarter with a pick-six off
of Marblehead Quarterback Myles O’Neil.
O’Neil got his team back in it quickly on the
next drive with a 15-yard quarterback keeper
for 15 yards. After he recovered his own
fumble on a dropped snap on 2nd and goal,
O’Neil rolled out to his right for a five-yard
touchdown pass on third down to receiver
Andy Palmer to give the Magicians a 7-6
lead.
Lynnfield answered with a 53-yard
rumble by Marley lll that went for a
touchdown. Marley was able to easily
penetrate Marblehead’s defensive line thanks
to help from Lynnfield’s run blockers and
made his way up to the secondary when he
bounced the run to the outside and cut up
the sideline where no one was going to catch
him. A failed two-point conversion gave,
the Pioneers a slim 12-7 lead in the second
quarter.
Adamo capitalized off of a Marblehead
turnover on downs with a 38-yard touchdown
pass to Gazit. The point after attempt would
get blocked, keeping Lynnfield’s lead at 11
points.
An interception by Adamo late in the 2nd
quarter would prove costly for the Pioneers;
however, as Marblehead’s offense was able to
get up field for one last shot into the endzone
before halftime. O’Neil shrugged off a
blitzing defender and sent a bomb downfield
that was caught by receiver Connor Cronin to
cut the lead down to 18-13.
Lynnfield wouldn’t score for the rest
of the contest, and special teams was a big
problem in the second half as the punting
unit fumbled, resulting in a Shane Keough
touchdown for Marblehead to take the lead.
A blocked punt by Marblehead’s Baxter
Jennings gave the Magicians the ball in
Lynnfield territory as O’Neil threw for his
third touchdown of the game, sealing the
victory for Marblehead, 26-18.
“I think our guys hung in and battled,”
Lamusta said. “We definitely came out
and played very intense, I’m very proud of
how the defense played, and we had some
explosive plays on offense.”
It was a valiant effort for Lynnfield as
their offensive duo of Adamo and Marley
played well and gave Marblehead a run for
their money. However, Marblehead’s rally
around their teammate was powerful enough
to lift them to victory, and both teams can be
proud of not only their play on the field but
their class in supporting one of their football
brothers during the most difficult day in his
life.

WEEK 3
Magical run continues
Win streak extends to 23 games thanks to strong defensive effort
By anne maRIe tOBIn
assIGnment edItOR
NORTH ANDOVER — Behind
a superlative defensive effort, the
Marblehead High football team extended
its win streak to 23 with a 12-7 win over
non-league rival North Andover Friday
night on a cold and wind-swept night at
Walsh Stadium in North Andover.
A 39-yard touchdown reception by
senior wide receiver Connor Cronin from
6’5” junior quarterback Miles O’Neill
with only 23 seconds left in the first half
was the difference. O’Neill finished the
evening with 201 passing yards.
Both teams excelled on defense for
most of the game with all of the game’s
scoring packed into a 95-second spurt at
the end of the first half.
North Andover struck first, taking a 7-0
lead on a 29-yard touchdown reception
by Cam Partridge, who fought off two
Marblehead tacklers to hold onto the ball
with 1:35 left in the second quarter.
Marblehead responded with a 51-
yard drive, all in the air, capped by a
touchdown pass from O’Neill to Ryan
Commoss that made it 7-6 (extra point
was blocked). A long kickoff return by
Connor Cronin to the Marblehead 49-yard
line set up the drive, giving the Magicians
a short field. O’Neill took full advantage,
completing five of seven passes on the
drive.
North Andover fumbled the ensuing
kickoff, allowing Marblehead a couple of
chances to punch it in but the Magicians
squandered the opportunity after a North
Andover interception in the end zone.
A superlative defensive stop gave the
Magicians another chance. Cronin hauled
in what turned out to be the game-winning
score to give Marblehead a 12-7 lead (pass
failed) with 23 seconds left in the half.
“North Andover was able to get
the stops when they needed and take
advantage early,” said Head Coach Jim
Rudloff following Friday’s game. “We
just really finally strung a couple of plays
together where everyone was on the same
page.”
Both teams stepped up defensively in
the second half.
With 4:33 left in the game, a
Magicians’ fumble gave North Andover
a last shot to steal the game, only to be
denied. But the Magicians’ defense stood
strong, anchored by junior Christian
Pacheco, who came up with several key
plays to thwart the Knights’ final drive.
The Magicians were able to squeak out
the win, but Rudloff notes that his offense
will have to clean it up moving forward.
“We played very sloppy on offense all
night,” said Rudloff about the game. “We
have a tremendous amount of work to
do if we expect to be successful moving
forward.”
Marblehead’s Connor Croninn breaks out of
coverage and goes on to score.
WEEK 4
Tanners stun Magicians at home
MARBLEHEAD— The
Tanners shocked the Marblehead
Magicians at home last Friday,
giving them their first loss in three
years, and ending their incredible
win streak at 23.
Perhaps the most stunning part
about Peabody’s victory? The game
wasn’t even close.
Peabody’s offense had been
rolling all season, but it looked
like they would be tested against a
strong Magician defense. However,
Tanner’s Quarterback Shea
Lynch and company silenced the
Marblehead crowd on the first drive
of the game. Lynch was able run a
QB keep to get the Tanners inside
the 10 yard line which would set
up a 10 yard rushing touchdown
for running back Will Pinto to put
Peabody in front 7-0 early. O’Neill
then led his team downfield with
a 43 yard pass to receiver Brooks
Keefe on the teams first drive.
O’Neill ran a QB keeper for a 20
yard gain before senior running
back Eddie Johns trucked his way
into the endzone on a 3 yard run to
tie the game at 7.
After that touchdown,
Peabody was able to shut down
Marblehead’s explosive vertical
passing game, keeping the
Magicians scoreless for the next
three quarters.
O’Neill threw for 121 yards
in the first half, but the offense
was largely inefficient thanks to
the Tanners defense taking away
big plays and forcing a number of
incomplete passes. Down 14-7 in
Marblehead celebrates a touchdown by Eddie Johns against Peabody.
the second quarter, Marblehead’s
defense was able to get a stop and
give the ball back to the offense.
On their third drive, the Magicians
had a golden opportunity to tie
the game. O’Neill dropped back
to throw and launched a ball
downfield from their own 30
yard line that was intended for
a wide open Keefe, but the ball
was dropped for what would have
been a 70 yard touchdown to tie
the game. Marblehead would end
up turning the ball over on downs
and failed to get anything going
offensively for the rest of the game.
The Tanners went into the half with
a 20-7 lead, although there was
hope that Marblehead could make
the necessary adjustments in the
locker room to get back into the
game, the Tanners refused to let that
happen.
Marblehead received the
second half kickoff, but Peabody’s
secondary immediately forced back
to back incompletions to force a
Magician punt. Later in the quarter,
Peabody was the benificiary of a
little bit of luck when Lynch threw
a pass over the middle that was
tipped by Marblehead, but was
grabbed from the air by Batista who
then darted for a 56 yard recieving
touchdown. Lynch threw the fifth
and final touchdown for Peabody
on a pass to reciever Jayce Dooley
for 35 yards.
Despite the tough loss,
STAFF PHOTO | SPENSER HASAK
Marblehead’s season is far from
over. The team still possesses
a record of 3-1 and has an easy
strength of schedule going forward,
playing a winless Beverly team on
Friday at home before traveling to
face a Danvers High team that posts
a 1-3 record on the season. Both of
which should give the Magicians
a much needed confidence boost
heading into the postseason.
looked back to the tune of a 27-7
victory over the Falcons.
Danvers won the coin toss and
elected to receive the opening kickoff.
The Falcons proceeded to go on a 13-
play, eight minute drive and appeared
to be headed for a touchdown until
Marblehead’s defense stepped up.
The Falcons had a 4th-1 from
Marblehead’s 23-yard line and
decided to go for it, but the
Magicians were up to the task,
as they stuffed Danvers to no
gain.
Marblehead took over and immediately
hit a big play from quarterback Miles
Oneill, as he hit Connor Cronin on a swing
pass that went for 52 yards. The Magicians
then had a 4th-4 from the 4-yard line, but
Oneill threw an incomplete pass to end the
drive. The score was 0-0 at the end of the
first quarter.
It seemed that this was going to be
a defensive struggle, but Marblehead’s
offense woke up in the second quarter.
After forcing Danvers into a three-andout,
the Magicians took over with great
field position at the Danvers 49-yard
line and took advantage. Oneill threw
a 34-yard deep pass down the left side,
and Ryan Commoss made a sliding catch

WEEK 8
in the endzone, which gave Marblebead
a 7-0 lead. The Magicians saw the ball
one more time before the end of the half,
and scored a touchdown with just 20
seconds remaining. It was a case of deja
vu’, as Oneill again hit Commoss down
the left side into the endzone – this time
for a 16-yard touchdown pass that gave
Marblehead a 14-0 lead at halftime.
Marblehead opened up the second
half with the ball, and were stopped after
gaining 10 yards on a fourth and 11 from
the Danvers 33-yard line. The Magicians
forced the Falcons into a three and out
and would again strike. On the first play
of Marblehead’s second drive of the half,
Cronin took a sweep 60 yards into the
endzone and extended the Magicians’ lead
21-0. On the ensuing Marblehead drive,
they capped off a 49-yard touchdown
drive with a 10-yard pass from Oneill to
Eddie Johns. The Magicians led, 27-0.
Marbelhead’s defense really stifled the
Danvers offense after the first quarter, as
they didn’t give up another first down until
late in the third quarter. Magicians’ Head
Coach Jim Rudloff thought shaking off the
rust was the biggest change after the first
quarter.
“I was not thrilled how we started the
game, especially coming off a bye week,”
Rudloff said. “After the first quarter, we
started wrapping up and played a really
strong game defensively the rest of the
way.”
Danvers got on the board late in the
game. Kevin Ahern intercepted a pass
from Oneill at the Marblehead 13-
yard line. Four plays later, the Falcons’
quarterback Travis Voisine ran up the
middle for a 4-yard touchdown run, which
made the score 27-7, and that was the
score when the final whistle blew.
Rudloff still sees room for the offense
to improve.
“We hit a few big plays tonight,
which was great, but did not have much
consistency otherwise,” Rudloff said.
“Once our offense becomes a little more
consistent, we are going to be in a great
place as a team.”
Leading the way for Marblehead was
Oneill, as he finished the game with 224
passing yards, 51 rushing yards and three
touchdown passes. Oneill had plenty of
help, as Cronnin finished the game with
65 yards receiving and added 75 more
yards on the ground along with a rushing
touchdown. Commoss had 48 receiving
yards and two touchdown catches.
The Magicians defense was led by the
trio of Sam Annese, Scott Campbell and
Chris Dewitt. Marbelehead improved its
record to 6-1.

THANKSGIVING PREVIEW
Marblehead looks to extend
series lead over Swampscott
By Ryan VeRmette
maRBlehead Weekly neWs
A game-winning field goal by
Marblehead on Swampscott’s home turf
left a bitter taste in the mouths of Big Blue
Nation last Thanksgiving.
Now with Turkey Day on the horizon,
Swampscott will have a turn to take out the
Magicians in their house, but it won’t be
easy.
Marblehead holds a slight edge in the
series 56-50-6, and hopes to make it three
Thanksgiving day wins in a row over their
perennial rival, while Swampscott hopes to
close the gap.
The Magicians finished their regular
season with a 6-1 record, good enough to
earn them an 8 seed in the Division 3 State
Tournament. Marblehead had a new face
under center this season in 6’5 Junior Miles
O’Neill. Marblehead entered this season
riding a 20-game win streak and set out
to defend last year’s championship. They
blew out Concord Carlisle (25-6) in the first
game of the season. That was followed by
an emotional 26-18 victory over Lynnfield
(26-18) and a razor-thin win on the road
against North Andover (12-7).
In week 4 against Peabody, the magical
ride came to a screeching halt as the
Tanners pummeled the Magicians 40-7 on
their home field, ending the win streak at
23. Marblehead immediately bounced back
with wins in its final three games of the
season against Masconomet (28-7), Beverly
(41-0), and Danvers (27-7). The Magicians
continued their strong end to the season
with a 35-0 blowout over No. 9 seeded
Whitman-Hanson, qualifying them for the
state quarterfinals.
Swampscott’s season was a little more
bumpy to say the least. Big Blue ended the
regular season with a 3-5 record. They lost
their season opener to Auburn (19-7), but
came right back the following week with a
27-6 drubbing over the Bulldogs of Lynn
English. In week three, a defensive battle
on a cold night saw Bishop Fenwick outlast
Swampscott by a score of 14-0. Big Blue
went on a two-game win streak, beating
Saugus (38-0), and Northeast Metro RVT
(41-32). They would go on to lose three
straight to end the season however, to the
likes of Danvers (35-7), Beverly (28-23),
and Masconomet (7-0).
Swampscott qualified for the Division 5
state tournament with the final spot, but lost
to No. 1 ranked Hudson 41-17, ending its
run at back-to-back titles.
Even with the difference in records
this year, a rivalry as old and rich as this
one will always find a way to keep things
The coin is tossed during an annual Thanksgiving Day matchup between
Marblehead and Swampscott.
interesting. Marblehead has gotten the
better of Swampscott with last second
scores in the most recent contests, but Big
Blue isn’t quite ready to end their season
just yet.
Swampscott hopes to flip the script this
year with its defensive mentality (three
games this year with seven points or fewer
given up), while Marblehead looks to air
it out with its playmakers on offense (201
total points scored, 25 points per game this
season).
It is the epitome of a storied rivalry, and
the 113th edition between two of last year’s
state champions is shaping up to be a great
one.
WE’RE ALL ABOUT
MAKING THE
RIGHT MOVES.
We believe in working hard, teamwork and having fun.
Good luck to area teams this year! Stay safe.
