Regional Executive 

This year was FLR’s turn to host 

the “Glen National” race at Watkins 

Glen. Over 300 cars competed. An 

event of this size isn’t possible without 

the efforts of a lot of volunteers. A big 

thanks to chair Elizabeth Thiel and all 

of the people whose efforts made this a 

successful weekend. 

As I am writing this the next thing on 

our schedule is the Pro Solo. I am sure 

that similar efforts will be made by many 

of our members (some who were at the 

Glen for the national race). 

As this column is already late, I am 

going to end with a reminder that the 

nominating committee is looking for 

candidates to be officers in our region for 

next year. I am sure they will welcome 

any volunteers to be nominated for open 

positions on the board.

Minutes 

FLR BOD Meeting 

Minutes - May 29, 2007 

Cartwright Inn, Henrietta, NY 

Call to order @ 7:45PM 

The April meeting minutes approved 

on a motion by Mike Toombs, 2nd Curtis 

Braun. 

Elizabeth Thiel gave a Treasurer’s 

report. 

Mike Toombs moved to move July 

meeting from the third to the tenth, 2nd 

John Morris, passed. 

Sound Equipment passed calibration 

at another lab. Should be back in time 

for STPR 

The Westward Ho Regional Race 

is scheduled for Nelson Ledges on the 

ninth and tenth of June. It was noted 

that the last two regional races only had 

fifty cars. 

The next Solo event is scheduled for 

June 24th. An OOR event with WNY 

will run on June 17th. The last Solo was 

very successful. The Pro Solo will run 

July 20 through 22. 

RallyCross events are scheduled for 

June 16 and 30. 

The 2007 Yearend Banquet is planned 

for the Avon Inn on January 19th 2008. 

Cost will be approximately $30 ea. 

The High Points Picnic is scheduled 

for October 20th at Mendon Ponds 

Park. 

The nominating committee is to be 

selected by and set at July Meeting

FLR General Meeting 

Minutes - June 5, 2007 

Cartwright Inn, Henrietta, NY 

Called to order @ 8:01PM By 

Lew Giesy. 29 members were in 

attendance. 

Motion for the approval of the 

minutes of the previous meeting by 

Jim Craven, 2nd by Barbara Lissow, 

approved unanimously. 

Treasurers Report 

Elizabeth Thiel reported that there 

was approximately $18,600 in the 

checking account. The current values for 

the savings accounts were reported. 

Entry fees for the Nelson Ledges race 

have begun to be deposited. 

Activities 

Gail McGuire discussed plans for a 

High Points picnic at Stewart Lodge in 

Mendon Ponds Park, which may also 

be the site of the 1st annual FLR Bocce 

Tournament. (Note: the picnic has been 

moved to the West Lodge on the 20th of 

October.) 

The date of the July meeting has been 

changed from July 3rd to July 10th, due 


to proximity to the July 4th holiday. 

Solo Report 

Dave Avery discussed Solo events 

held so far – at RIT and at Xerox (held 

with a Novice School). Competitor 

attendance is up. The June 24th event 

has been moved to SEAD. The July 

event has SCCA “Pro Solo” on the 

schedule for the 20th through the 22nd. 

Rally 

Tom Langdon reported that the 

Charity Rally that preceded STPR had 

37 entries, and collected a total of $1215 

for charity. The Glen Region donated 

trophies for the Charity Rally. The Glen 

Region does have a rally scheduled on 

July 6th – more info can be found at 

www.glenspeed.com. 

Race 

As of tonight, there are 84 entries for 

the FLR Nelson Ledges Regional, and 17 

entries in the ‘pursuit’ race. 

Old Business 

The Board is looking for members 

to serve on the Region’s Nominating 

Committee. If interested, contact Lew 

or any Board member. 

Jim Craven reported that the Region’s 

sound meter passed certification at an 

independent lab. 

The problem involving a Philadelphia 

Region member and WGI has been 

resolved. 

New Business 

George Morris inquired as to the 

financial results of STPR, held on the 

previous weekend. Some discussion 

ensued. It is expected that financial 

results will be available shortly. 

Mike Brunner has agreed to serve as 

Membership Chairman. 

Finger Lakes Motorsports – STPR 

LLC. 

Meridith Croucher reported on STPR, 

held the previous weekend. The Park 

exposé was ‘big’, with more people on 

the Green than in previous years. STPR 


brings more people to Wellsboro than 

any other event. Competitor attrition 

was lower than historical levels. Stage 

9 had 3 roofed cars, but one did manage 

to continue. 

Stages 7 & 10 were cancelled, due 

to problems with unruly spectators. At 

Colton Point, the cleanup crew pulled 

300 beer bottles out of the forest. 

Meridith noted that Amy and Alan 

Smith were the LAST to leave the airport 

after the event.

Motion to accept minutes of the 

previous Board meeting, by John Morris,

Pro Solo Budget 

Corey Kuhns presented a budget for 

the planned Pro Solo event at SEAD. 

He discussed budgeting and operational 

issues. Entry costs and procedural items 

are stipulated in the Pro Solo contract 

with SCCA in Topeka. Motion to 

approve the budget by Curtis Braun, 2nd 

by Gail McGuire, approved. 

Race 

There was discussion about the 

recently held Regional at Nelson 

Ledges. The race was well received 

by competitors, and participants in the 

“Pursuit Race” were especially pleased. 

Full accounting is not complete, but 

the Region may have broken even or 

incurred a slight loss on the event. 

Entries are coming in for the Region’s 

Glen National – 169 entries so far. SCCA 

President Jim Julow is scheduled to 

attend the race weekend at WGI. There 

was a question about the Region hosting 

him at dinner one evening. Motion by 

Curtis Braun to authorize up to $300 

for meal/meeting expense for Region’s 

representatives & SCCA President, 2nd 

by John Morris, approved. 

The board considered a request from 

Barbara Lissow regarding the worker 

incentive program and travel costs tofrom 

tracks. Motion by Mike Toombs to 

reimburse Barbara’s mileage costs up to 

$60, 2nd by Gail McGuire, approved. 

STPR 

Lew Giesy reported on a post- 

STPR meeting with Pennsylvania 

DCNR regarding problems with the 

2007 event and restrictions of future 

events. A number of issues were cited, 

but the major underlying issue was 

‘crowd control’. Other issues included 

environmental concerns regarding the 

water crossing, Ranger staffing, night 

stages, etc. It seems likely that, if STPR 

continues, it won’t ‘look’ the same as in 

the past. 

Activities 

Gail McGuire reported on plans for 

the Region picnic, scheduled for Oct. 

20th at West Lodge in Mendon Ponds 

Park. There was discussion about 

holding the Region’s ‘annual meeting’ 

at the picnic and, after some discussion, 

Chris Bucknam made a motion to hold 

the annual meeting on October 2nd, 

as originally scheduled. 2nd by John 

Morris, approved. 

Nominating Committee 

As required by the Region’s bylaws, 

a Nominating Committee is being 

formed to identify and nominate suitable 

candidates for elected Regional offices 

in 2008. Chris Bucknam will chair the 

Committee.

New Business 

Several Board members noted an 

item in FasTrack which proposed issuing 

racing licenses to competitors 14 years 

old and up. Discussion followed.

Region had $54,533 in the checking 

account. Savings account values were 

reported. All bills received to date have 

been paid. 

Activities 

Gail McGuire discussed plans for 

a High Points picnic at West Lodge in 

Mendon Ponds Park, which may also 

be the site of the 1st annual FLR Bocce 

Tournament. 

Solo Report 

Dave Avery reviewed the status of 

the Solo program, and noted that they 

are currently on budget. Cortese has 

provided a $1500 sponsorship this 

season. 

The Region held it’s 4th Solo event 

recently – good event with over 100 

competitors. Pro Solo at SEAD is coming 

up in 2 weeks and could use support,

addition, there is an upcoming ‘regular’ 

Solo event at MCC. 

Rally 

No Rally program members were 

available to provide a report. 

Race 

Lew reported on the Region’s Nelson 

Ledges race weekend. A good turnout 

for the weekend, and the Pursuit Race 

was well received by competitors. 

Nominating Committee 

As required by the Region’s Bylaws, a 

Nominating Committee has been formed 

to identify and nominate candidates for 

elected Regional positions for 2008. 

The Committee is chaired by Chris 

Bucknam, and includes Syl Barlow, 

Dave Ciufo, Carl Dresie and Marnie 

Soom.

Final income and financial statements are still being 

prepared for STPR. 

The status of the event is in jeopardy. Pennsylvania DCNR 

met with STPR officials shortly after the event, and proposed 

major restrictions on any future running of the rally.

Volunteer Incentive and 

Recognition Program 

Regional Executives, and Divisional 

Administrators should have received an 

announcement about the new Volunteer 

Incentive and Recognition program approved 

by the SCCA Board of Directors in May. 

Most of the original announcement follows 

along with more details. 

Many of you saw this program at the 2007 

SCCA National Convention and we thank 

you for your valuable input and support. It 

provides incentives and lower dues for new 

volunteers while rewarding and recognizing 

current volunteers for their contributions. 

Implemented in two phases, the first begun 

on June 8 and is aimed the new volunteer. 

The second phase is directed at current and 

established volunteers and begins with the 

start of the 2008 race season. 

New volunteers can participate as a 

volunteer for one weekend, and then join 

the SCCA for $30. The new volunteer will 

be able to renew membership for a second 

and third year at the reduced rate by working 

four days each year prior. 

For established volunteers the program, 

depending upon the number of days worked, 

will provide dues discounts up to $30, 

offers special membership cards, and 

will recognize their efforts in SportsCar. 

Volunteers working four or five days receive 

a $15 discount, six or seven days worked 

earns a $22 discount, and working eight 

or more days earns a $30 discount along 

with the SportsCar feature and the special 

membership card and credentials. This phase 

of the program begins with the 2008 race 

season with 2008 participation automatically 

applied to membership renewals starting in 

November 2008. 

Many are asking about tracking 

participation and if this means returning to 

volunteer log cards. We can definitely say 

there are no plans to use volunteer log cards. 

While the specifics are still being worked 

on, race organizers will be asked to report 

volunteer participation electronically by 

uploading an Excel spreadsheet or a comma 

delimited file (csv). Also available will be 

a web-form for entering the information 

online for those not wanting to upload a file. 

National Convention attendees have made 

it clear that race operations vary across the 

country. Therefore, the format for collecting 

participation information is specified, and 

not the method. 


While there is no intent to specify how to 

collect the information, for those that might 

want to track participation by scanning 

membership cards with optical character 

readers, please contact us. We have tested 

a number of rather easy and inexpensive 

options and want to make you aware of 

those tools. 

Probably the second most often asked 

question about the program is why are 

the membership discounts limited to $30? 

Feedback from a number of Regions and 

other sources said that higher discounts 

would have a negative impact upon existing 

Region and Division incentive programs. By 

limiting discounts, Regions and Divisions 

will retain the ability to reward volunteers 

under their own established programs in 

conjunction with this new incentive. 

This program is funded through a $2 per 

entry fee assessed to all Club Racing Driver 

Schools, Regionals and National Events 

beginning November 1.

Weekend Membership 

Program 

With a new look to recruiting SCCA 

members, a new Weekend Membership 

program for Club Racing events will launch 

August 1, 2007. Details of the program 

for Solo, RallyCross, and RoadRally are 

currently under review and should be ready 

by the start of the 2008 competition season 

for those venues. The existing Temporary 

Membership program will still be effective 

for only those programs until then. 

Although the former Temporary 

Membership program was created to 

generate new members, it did not produce 

the expected results. Of over 12,000 forms 

issued to regions during the three years of 

the program, about half of those were issued 

to prospective members and a little less than 

3% of those converted to a regular SCCA 

membership for any kind. Though many 

were issued to entice prospective members 

to join, many others were issued simply 

as easy giveaways for crew members and 

event staff support with no real recruiting 

plan or follow up from region membership 

programs. 

Each Weekend Member will pay $15.00, 

which is good for any weekend event that 

will span up to four days from Friday to 

Monday. Prospective members will be 

encouraged to join the SCCA on-site, at 

which time the Weekend Member can take 

an immediate $15.00 discount off their 

national dues. If the Weekend Member joins 

later, the $15.00 discount still applies and is 

taken when the regular Member Application 

is sent to the Membership Department. 

If joining on-line, the member simply 

needs to use the Weekend Membership 

form Serial Number as the promotional 

discount code. The discount can be applied 

to any form of SCCA membership. The 

Weekend Membership is good only for the 

weekend noted on the form and a Weekend 

Member can purchase as many during the 

course of the year as they wish. Further, 

the first Weekend Membership is free if 

used in conjunction with the Club Racing 

Volunteer Incentive Program announced 

on June 1. Competitors entering any level 

of Performance Driving Experience (PDX) 

events are also entitled to use the Weekend 

Membership plan. 

Regions retain $10.00 of the $15.00 fee. 

The remaining $5.00 and the top (white) 

copy of the form is returned along with 

event audit fees and is used to underwrite 

the production and mailing of the prospect 

information package. The pink copy is 

retained by the Weekend Member. An image 

of the new form can be seen elsewhere in 

this issue. 

To support the program and to outreach 

to the Weekend Member in every way 

possible, regions are encouraged to establish 

an active recruiting and follow-up program. 

Monthly electronic region files provide 

Weekend Member identification that should 

be used to support their local recruiting 

programs.

The Finger Lakes Region High Points 

Championship is intended to be a reward 

for participation in Finger Lakes Region 

(FLR) and SCCA events. Points are 

awarded to participants (competitors and 

worker) in racing, rallycross, rallying, 

solo, charitable and public events from 

September 1, 2006 through August 31, 

2007. Competition, worker and total 

points will be recognized. 

HIGH POINT 

SUBMISSION 

FLR events, for which information 

has been provided to the Activities 

Chair, will be compiled. Participation 

in non-FLR events should be reported 

to the Activities Chair. Points may be 

submitted throughout the year up until 

September 30, 2007. Members should 

report participation and are ultimately 

responsible for their points.

Fall RoadRally Dates Set 

Two Finger Lakes Region fall RoadRally dates have been scheduled. 

A low key, easy “Social Rally” is set to run on Sunday, September 

9th. This rally will run in the Victor, NY area. Rick Barnes is the 

Rallymaster. 

Curtis Braun will again be Rallymaster for “How to Play the Rally 

Game” scheduled for November 11th. This RoadRally is an opportunity 

for new rallyists to learn how to follow a route and to stay on time. It is 

also an opportunity to dust off the skills needed to run the Finger Lakes 

Region’s Winter Rally Series.

WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (July 15, 2007) 

– The 59th running of the Glen Nationals, 

dating back to the original street races 

in 1949, attracted 320 competitors to the 

2007 edition presented by the Finger Lakes 

Region, SCCA, based in Rochester, New 

York. Some of the best national drivers, 

from Maine to Florida, and parts of the 

Midwest, came to test their skills at one of 

the most famous and historic road courses 

in the United States. 

Saturday was devoted to practice and 

qualifying sessions for each of the seven 

race groups. Veteran driver Randy Canfi eld 

suffered a mechanical failure, which put his 

HP Sprite into the guardrail; he was unable 

to participate in Sunday’s race. 

Following practice and qualifying, an 

open Town Hall meeting was held with 

SCCA president Jim Julow. The evening 

concluded with a picnic supper for all 

participants. 

The first of Sunday’s seven 14-lap, 

47.6-mile races was for T1, T2, T3, SSB, 

and SSC. John Buttermore, of Bloomfi eld 

Hills, Mich., took the overall and T1 win 

in his Chevrolet Corvette, with a time of 

2:05.688. Robert Hahn, of San Diego, 

Calif., took second on the next to last lap in 

his Corvette. David Pintaric, of Canfi eld, 

Ohio, driving a Dodge Viper, fi nished third. 

Other class winners were T2, Bill Ziegler/ 

Stamford, Conn./Mitsubishi Evo; T3, Joe 

Aquilante/Chester Springs, Penn./Chevrolet 

Cobalt; SSB, William Fenton/Keene, N.H./ 

Acura; SSC, John Heinricy/Royal Oak, 

Mich./Chevy. New track records were set in 

SSB by Richard Cullen/Marshfi eld, Mass. 

(Mini Cooper/2:21.184) and Joe Aquilante/ 

Chester Springs, Penn. (Cobalt/2:15.922). 

Forty-three Spec Racer Fords took the 

green at the start of Race Two. Lee Hill was 

the early leader followed by Mark Eaton. 

Hill took over the point on Lap 6, but one lap 

later, Herb Sweeney, Jr., took the lead with 

Hill now back in fourth position. Lap 9 saw 

a new leader, Mick Robinson, followed by 

Derek Defonce and Eaton. This held for four 

laps of full-course yellow. At the fi nish, it 

was Mark Eaton, of Eau Gallie, Fla., Derek 

Defonce, of New Preston, Conn., and Mick 

Robinson, of Melbourne, Fla. 

Race Three was for FA, DSR, CSR, FB, 

FC, S2000, and FM. The start was delayed 

by two extra pace laps due to slippery 

course conditions. On Lap 5, a full-course 

yellow was called for four laps, and the race 

continued on Lap 9. At the fi nish, it was 

two Formula Atlantics in fi rst and second 

position; Paul Lecain, of Dandown, N.H, 

driving a Ralt Toyota in front, followed by 

Ahsen Yelkin, of Austintown, Ohio. Jean- 

Luc Liverato, of Alpharetta, Georgia, was 

third overall and fi rst in DSR in a Stohr 

Wf1. Other class winners included: CSR, 

William Goldkind/Holbrook, N.Y./Viking; 

FB, Jeremy Hill/Toronto, Ont., Canada/ 

PhotonVD; S2000, David Dullum/Falls 

Church, Virg. /Lola; FM, Jeremy Grenier/ 

Point of Rocks, MD/Star; FC, Mauro

/VanDiemen. Four new track records 

were set by Liverato (DSR/1:51.311), Hill 

(FB/1:54.621), Huffman (FE/1:59.171), and 

Hans Peter (FA/1:45.074). The drive of the 

race was by pole sitter Hans Peter. He was 

held in the pits, started dead last, and still 

fi nished fourth overall. 

Race Four started in rainy conditions as 

34 cars spread among EP, FP, GP, HP and 

GTL took the green. Early race leader was 

Mark Carpenter in his FP Acura Integra. 

The lead group was scrambled on the 

second lap when several cars were involved 

in an incident in the section of the course 

known as “the toe of the boot”, taking out 

Harold Flescher’s FP Austin Healy and 

Don Girven’s EP Mazda RX3. When the 

green came out again on Lap 7, the course 

was clear and dry. Leading the race was 

Chris Dryden, of Middletown, Del., in an 

EP Mazda RX7. On Lap 10, Kevin Leigh, 

of Harrisburg, Virg., took the lead in his 

Caterham 7, displacing Dryden. Leigh 

pulled away and won by five seconds, 

winning overall and EP. Mark Carpenter 

was third overall and fi rst in FP. Other 

class winners: GTL, Howard Gerstein/ 

Lancaster, Penn./Miata; GP, Bob Lentz 

II/Chantilly, Virg. /Nissan; and HP, Ron 

Bartell/Madbury, N.H./Midget. 

The big-bore cars of GT1, GT2, GT3, 

and AS gave their show for Race Five. 

Simon Gregg, of Ponte Vedra Beach, 

Fla., won GT1 and overall, in a Chevrolet 

Corvette, leading from start to fi nish. He 

was slowed only by three laps of a fullcourse 

yellow. At the fi nish, the Camaro of 

Michael Brockman, of Milford, Conn., was 

second and the Oldsmobile Cutlass of Jack 

Busch, of Torrington, Conn., fi nished third. 

Paul Newman, of Westbury, Conn., was 

fourth, just holding off William Rozmajzl at 

the fi nish line. Other class winners: GT2, 

Robert Thumel/Denver, Colo./Porsche 996; 

GT3, Ric Bushey/Virginia Beach, Virg. 

/Nissan; AS, John Heinricy/ Royal Oak, 

Mich./Pontiac. 

Race Six combined FF, F500 and FV. 

Laps 7 through 9 were under yellow with 

a restart on Lap 10. Robert Albani, of 

Hicksville, N.Y, driving an FF VanDiemen, 

was in the lead but Stephen Oseth, of 

Leesburg, Virg., got the lead on the last 

lap to win FF and overall by a car length 

over Albani. Other class winners: F500, 

Jim Schultz/ /, who set a new track record; 

FV, Roger Siebenaler/Williston, V.T./ 

Mysterian. 

Twenty-fi ve Spec Miatas took the green, 

and ended the weekend with an incidentfree 

race. For the fi rst three laps, Steven 

Gorriaran, of Providence, R.I., Charlie 

Campbell, of Corry, Penn., and Ken Zainer, 

of Fallston, M.D., were in fi rst, second and 

third positions. On Lap 8, Zainer took and 

held the lead until he suffered engine failure 

on Lap 12, leaving Gorriaran, Mark Cefalo, 

of Pittston, Penn., and Campbell in the top 

positions at the fi nish.

Report 

The June 24th event was reviewed. Kudos to Marnie 

Soom and crew for a great event. Brad and his timing & 

scoring crew flawlessly upgraded to the new laptop and 

upgraded version of Axware. 

All of our efforts to run smooth events are paying off.

Brad Johnson are chairing. Work is in progress.

The ProSolo is coming along. The course design by Jim 

Garry looks fast and fun.

The Porta-pots and a dumpster have been ordered. 

There are a few spots left where we need workers. 

- People to work waivers/gate first thing on Saturday and 

Sunday Morning and during the lunch break. 

- People to work course during the challenge on Sunday 

Afternoon 

- People to just be around to take care of whatever needs 

taking care of.
