Red Bull Speed Street, Red Bull’s touring showcar event, was held on April 24 along Orchard Road, 

with former F1 driver David Coulthard the highlight as he sent an RBR F1 car along Orchard Road 

doing stunts and sprints to wow the massive assembled crowd. Also available for the delight of 

the crowds of car lovers there were rare Renault and Audi cars, put on display in Ngee Ann City’s

Ferrari, which launched the name of their 2011 car as the F150, 

has made a further revision after objections from Ford, who pro 

duced a best-selling pick-up truck of the same name in the the US. US. It 

will now be known as the 150° Italia. 

In addition, Superleague Formula driver Davide Rigon, part of 

Ferrari’s F1 simulator programme, made his test debut with the 

team, carrying out straight-line aero work at Vairano.

The response to our revamped Import Rides has been fantastic and our advertisers have

With the Middle East crisis still looming dangerously to boiling point, oil prices have shot 

up and this in turn has forced oil companies in Singapore to increase petrol prices. Some 

drivers of turbocharged 4WD have had to ease up on the throttle as 98 octane petrol 

has crossed the $2/litre barrier. A friend of mine even offered me an $8000 discount on 

his 2006 Mitsubishi Airtrek Turbo to take it off his hands as he was spending more than 

$1K on his monthly petrol bills and that’s just for commuting between his home and 

office. It is apparent that oil prices will remain high due to its limited availability and 

car companies will be focusing on new technologies such as EV Electric Vehicles and 

Hybrid technologies. Even Mitsubishi has made an announcement that they would be 

moving away from low volume models such as the Evolution series and concentrate on 

EV and Hybrid cars. Sob…

to take shape. 

Both teams’ cars have now been through the paint shop ready for GPR to begin fitting 

components to them. Speedworks’ car will be driven by Ginetta G50 graduate Tony 

Hughes and Dynojet’s by G50 champion Frank Wrathall. 

In addition, even though they are not entering a factory team, Toyota GB has announced 

it is funding an NGTC engine programme for customer teams fielding its Avensis model 

in the BTCC. 

Lam Seng Hang, distributor for Westlake Tires, treated their premium dealers to an 

incentive trip to China. The expense paid five day trip included a visit to the Westlake 

Tires factory in Hangzhou.

high-speed, thrill-a-minute National circuit in mid-October.

NEW SUBARU 

LIVERY REVEALED 

Former APRC driver Hayden Paddon has released an artist’s impression of the new 

livery for the Subaru he will be driving in the 2011 P-WRC. 

Designed by Kieran at Granger Design the car now incorporates the Kiwi image with 

the black and the silver fern, while the green carries on from previous years. The roof 

will also include a large Silver Fern. 

JOINT AWARD FOR 

FEMALE KART RACER 

In 2010, Beitske became the first 

female driver to ever win a European 

Championship round in a gearbox 

class when she beat 52 other racers to win Race 1 at the second round of the CIK-FIA European 

KZ2 Championship series in Varennes, France. A significant achievement for such a young 

aspiring driver, having come out fourth overall from a field of 82 racers, at the end of the 

four-race Championship. 

CANCELLATION OF AFOS

CKMP, the Asian Festival Of Speed 

(AFOS) Promoter in Korea has notified 

that they are unable to proceed 

with the AFOS event scheduled for 

8th May 2011, due to problems with 

the circuit owner KAVO. 

For GT Asia Series they have established a cooperation 

with Sepang Circuit to support the 

F1 event in Malaysia as a non-championship 

round. JK Racing Asia Series will now attend 

the Guangdong Circuit, China on August 14th 

and the Asian Touring Car Series will now start 

1 month later on 24th April in conjunction 

with HTCC also in Guangdong.

MCLAREN UNVEILS THE NEW 

MP4-12C GT3 RACER 

Jointly developed with CRS Racing, the McLaren MP4-12C GT3 racer 

features a composite body with a new front splitter, revised side skirts, 

and an aggressive rear diffuser, as well as wider front fenders, carbon 

fibre canards, and a fixed rear wing. 

The car is around 100mm wider than the standard production car and its 

twin-turbo 3.8-litre V8 engine has been “tuned to race specification”. It 

was also revealed that there is a new Ricardo paddle-shift transmission 

which promises near instantaneous gear changes. Other performance 

upgrades include a new bespoke suspension which ditches the standard 

car’s ProActive Chassis Control System for race-specific dampers and 

anti-roll bars. There is also a revised electronics package and a high 

performance braking system with Akebono callipers. 

ŠKODA INTRODUCES 

NEW FABIA R2 RALLY CAR 

With the Fabia R2, Škoda is introducing 

a new rally car in the market, which 

is to be used in the rally category R2. 

The car was developed, extensively 

tested, and prepared for its use in rallies 

for over almost two years. 

In principle, the Fabia R2 is based 

on the series model of the popular 

small car, but there are significant 

differences in its engine, undercar- 

riage, axle kinematics, and gearbox. 

Compared to the series model, the 

undercarriage was changed considerably 

and the axle kinematics was 

adapted for its application in motor 

sports. Furthermore, the Fabia R2 

possesses a sequentially operated 

gearbox. Under the hood, a powerful 

1.6 l 16V engine puts out 132 kW. 

The maximum torque amounts to 

194Nm at 5500 rpm.

FIRST PODIUM 

OF 2011 ACHIEVED 

Matt Neal has qualified on pole position for the opening 

round of the 2011 Dunlop MSA British Tourin Car 

Championship at the Brands Hatch circuit in Kent. 

Worcestershire’s Neal, driving his Honda Racing Team’s 

new turbocharged Civic, set a qualifying lap record 

of 48.21s to achieve pole. Over such a short lap (The 

Brands Indy circuit is just 1.2 miles in length) that was 

a staggering 0.255s clear of his rivals, headed by young 

charger Andrew Jordan in his Pirtek Racing Vauxhall 

Vectra - like Neal, also using a turbo engine built to the

If you loved the previous films in the Fast and Furious franchise, 

you’ll love their fifth instalment of explosive action and hot rides! 

The franchise has become famous over the years for its focus on 

the crew of underground Los Angeles street racers bound by a code 

of loyalty and family. In past instalments the racers have blazed 

their way through Miami’s races, Tokyo’s drifting underworld, and 

through tunnels under the US/Mexico border. 

Now in Fast and Furious 5, or Fast Five for short, sees former cop 

Brian O’Conner (Paul Walker) joining ex-con Dom Toretto (Vin 

Diesel) and a star-studded cast of returning Fast stars (Jordana 

Brewster, Christ ‘Ludacris’ Bridges, Tyrese Gibson, Sung Kang, Gal 

Gadot, Matt Schulze, Tego Calderon and Don Omar)for the ultimate 

high-stakes race in the tropical Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro. 

In the previous movie, O’Conner and Mia Toretto (Brewster) broke 

Contractors Vectra, put in a late burst of speed to 

secure fourth place on the starting grid for the first 

of tomorrow’s three races. 

A FIRST FOR 

RUSSIA IN FIA GT3 

The FIA GT3 European Championship will set another 

landmark in its 6-year history as Europe’s most 

successful sportscar championship, when it becomes 

the first series to stage an international car race in 

Russia on the 20/21 August 2011. 

Situated 300km west of Moscow near the border with 

Belarus, the 3.362 km/1.9 mile Smolenskring will host 

Rounds 9 & 10 of the 2011 FIA GT3 European Championship in August, the first races on the 2011 

calendar where the series will be the main event. The 15-metre wide, 13 corner race track was 

designed by Formula 1 circuit architect Hermann Tilke and opened with a round of the European Truck 

Racing Championship on the 7th August 2010. The circuit layout makes good use of the terrain, with 

ample overtaking opportunities for sportscars around the 3.3km length which should provide plenty of 

entertainment for drivers and spectators alike. 

The 2011 FIA GT3 European Championship will take place over six double header events across Europe 

starting in Portugal on the 7/8 May at the Autodromo do Algarve. The first four events will be with the 

FIA GT1 World Championship before finishing the season as the headline series with two events at the 

Smolenskring in Russia and finishing at Zandvoort in The Netherlands in October. 

FAST AND FURIOUS 

THE 5TH INSTALLMENT 

Dom out from prison and escaped through several countries to 

elude authorities. Now, backed into a corner with no place to run, 

the racers must assemble an elite team of racers from their family 

and friends to pull off one last job—a heist worth $100 million. The 

prize: their freedom. 

But the racers will have to race for their lives through the streets 

of the city, against the corrupt businessman who wants them dead, 

and against the Federal agent Luke Hobbs (played by Dwayne Johnson) 

and his strike team, assigned to track Toretto and O’Conner 

down and arrest them. But in the labyrinth of streets in Rio, Hobbs 

realises he can’t tell the racers apart from the businessmen’s killers. 

It’s up to Hobbs to catch the racers first, before they are totalled—for 

good.

R & D CENTRE 

IN SINGAPORE 

Continental has held the groundbreaking ceremony for its 

new Research & Development centre in Singapore. The new 

Continental Singapore building aims to meet the demand 

of growing engineering capacities caused by the worldwide 

business expansion and particularly the growth in Asia. 

The relocation project of Continental Automotive Singapore 

started in April 2010. According to the project plan, by 

April 2012 the new site will have a 7-storey office and R&D 

building with a total floor space of 10,170 square meters. It 

is estimated to possess a seating capacity of 860 employees. 

Based on future development, it is planned to reach a 

capacity of 1,000 with a provision for an additional floor. 

The new Continental Singapore building serves three major 

purposes: an office site for R&D and related daily operation; 

a specialized automotive product verification and validation 

hub; a reliability test laboratory as well as a test car space 

for in-vehicle R&D activity. 

Under the highest level of quality control management, the 

new centre will drive the product creation process from 

conception to realization and finally onto the mass production 

of instrumentation clusters and displays, multimedia and 

telematic devices, radio navigation devices, centre stacks, 

interior modules and control systems.

Starting the WTCC season at Curitiba, the Chevrolet team is aiming 

to retain both the Drivers’ and Manufacturers’ World titles they won 

in 2010. Having worked hard throughout 2010 to design and build the 

new 1.6L turbo engine, which was achieved in less than nine months 

by RML’s engine department. After 4500 km of tests were completed 

to the satisfaction of drivers and engineers, the team is confident 

about their chances of having a winning season once again.

Eurasia Motorsport graduate and 2010 Formula BMW Pacific Champion, 

Richard Bradley, has landed one of the most sought after seats in F3 

racing having signed with TOM’S for the 2011 All-Japan F3 Championship. 

Once again the combination of Eurasia Motorsport and the newly renamed 

JK Racing Asia Series have proven to be a credible career step 

for aspiring young F1 stars. 

Bradley will be attempting to emulate fellow Eurasia graduate, Daniel 

Ricciardo, who won a F3 championship in his first year of trying. In 

Daniel’s case it was the British Championship. Ricciardo is now the 

Friday driver for the Toro Rosso F1 Team. The JK Racing Asia Series 

kicks off at the Sepang F1 GP on April 10th. 

With the ongoing FXOpen Drift at the Speed City KL, 

Selangor Turf Club, Seri Kembangan held from 25 - 27 

March 2011, saw much excitement and a whole host of

Plans for the exciting GT Asia Series for 2011 have 

been announced. The GT Asia Series will see the combination 

of the GT3 Asia with the GT4 Asia Cup into 

one outstanding Championship, whilst making changes 

to the regulations to incorporate some of the best 

features from each Series.

Irishman to race in the Fujitsu V8 

Supercar series with new team Matt 

Stone Racing. Cregan, 21, who is at 

the Yas Marina Circuit competing in 

the UAE GT class, said it had long been 

a goal of his to compete in the V8 

Supercar category. 

He started his racing career in Formula 

Ford in Ireland and England before moving 

into Porsche racing in Europe, while his 

V8 Supercar experience was limited to 

one test day at Winton Raceway with 

MW Motorsport, where he completed 

80-90 laps. He will be based on the Gold 

Coast for the year, with the first round of 

the 2011 Fujitsu V8 Supercar Series will 

be held at the Clipsal 500 in Adelaide 

from March 18-20.

O’YOUNG’S RACING 

PROGRAM FOR 2011 

Darryl O’Young has announced that he will be fighting for two motorsport 

championships this season - the FIA World Touring Car Championship 2011 (WTCC) 

with 22 rounds around the world, and also the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia 2011 

(PCCA) with 11 rounds in Asia. The 2010 WTCC rookie and Bamboo Engineering 

have spent one season together and all the personnel have remained intact for 

2011 including team mate Yukinori Taniguchi. 

There will be no clashes in schedules between the WTCC and the PCCA and O’Young 

is pleased to be able to fight for both championships in 2011. The 2-time PCCA 

champion emphasizes that “competing in Asia and staying close to my race fans in 

Hong Kong and China is important” to him and he “aims at nothing less than a 3rd 

PCCA championship title”. 

K4GP 24-HOURS 

ENDURANCE RACE 

Organised and promoted by Japan-based K4GP as 

an event to promote enjoyment in motorsports 

without any barriers and allowing the participation 

of handicapped people, the 24-hour endurance race 

– the third edition to be held in Sepang - saw Japan’s 

home team, Team Biba, taking the overall honours 

after it completed 458 laps around the 5.543-km 

Formula 1 circuit. 

Competing in his first car race in 16 years, wheelchair 

bound Adi Haslam who partnered a fellow 

handicap and former TV host Ras Adiba Radzi, led 

his Adi Haslam Motorsports team to win his class 

at Sepang’s K4GP 24-Hours Endurance; sending a 

message that handicapped people can participate 

and enjoy motor racing as well. 

A total 45 cars including seven Malaysian entries took 

part with all cars finishing the 24-hour race challenge.

The Porsche Carrera Cup Asia looks set for a record-breaking 

ninth season with an unprecedented 28 drivers signing 

up for the region’s most prestigious GT championship. 

A unique ingredient of the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia’s 

soaring success is the dual championship system, where 

professional racing drivers compete alongside amateur 

racers in two, points-scoring classes. 

The countdown to the start of the stellar season, which 

includes 11 rounds, began on March 12 at Malaysia’s 

Formula 1 facility, Sepang International Circuit. The 

bumper field of sportscar specialists from across the 

globe will take their awesome Porsche 911 GT3 Cup racing 

65,000 general admission tickets for the 2011 Formula 

1 Singtel Singapore Grand Prix , which will be held at 

the Marina Bay Street Circuit from 23 to 25 September 

has been released for sale. A number of new ticketing 

initiatives for the event has been introduced. Increased 

discounts for early bird grandstand buyers, offering up 

to a 17% saving on regular priced tickets. The tickets 

will be priced differently across two phases: Early Bird 

(3 March to 8 May) and Regular (9 May to race week). 

A new group booking scheme for the three largest 

grandstands – the Bay, Padang and Pit Grandstands is 

also being introduced. The Group Booking Special offers 

savings of up to 10% for fans who purchase four or

LAUNCH OF CARS.SVTA 

It was a night of electrifying ambience on 22 February, Tuesday, 

at the launch of CARS.SVTA, a joint development between 

Singapore Vehicle Traders Association (SVTA) and Singapore 

Press Holdings (SPH) that came to fruition after nearly two 

years of detailed planning and dedicated efforts. 

As a non-profit organisation, SVTA strives to offer low 

advertising rates to its members but for the first year of 

the launch, members will be able post their ads for free. 

The portal also serves as a communication platform on SVTA 

activities to its 400 members and other related parties. It 

also aims to be a reliable motor resource for car buyers with 

the integration of LTA’s (Land Transport Authority) motoring 

links and tools such as ERP rates and loan calculator, 

reinforcing its status as an all-in-one motoring web portal.

CONFIRMED FOR APRC 

A host of big names are expected at the opening 

round of the 2011 Asia Pacific Rally Championship 

(APRC) which forms part of the 2011 Malaysian 

Rally championship (MRC) to be run off at the 

Plaza Angsana Johor Bahru and Tai Tak Estate in 

Kota Tinggi from April 1st until 3rd. 

Heading the list is Japan’s defending champion 

Katsu Taguchi who will be racing under the MRF 

banner and the runner-up, team mate Guarav 

Gill of India as the duo made it a 1-2 finish 

over the six-round championship which saw the 

participants raced in Malaysia, New Zealand, 

Australia, New Caledonia, Japan and China. 

Malaysia’s challenge at the APRC will be spearheaded 

by the reigning MRC 2010 overall winner, Muhammad 

Rafiq Udhaya and his co-driver Sean Gregory in 

their Subaru Impreza and the Pennzoil GSR team of

‘MINI is back in the world of rallying,’ said Dirk Hollweg, head of MINI

The month of April has proved to be a 

mouthwatering one for motor racing fans in 

Singapore, with the Red Bull Speed Street 

showcar event on 24th April taking the F1 

fever into the heart of Singapore’s shopping 

high street, entertaining an audience 50000 

strong that lined every single roadside spot 

and elevated surface along an 800m stretch 

of Orchard Road, closed for this event. 

The highlight of Speed Street was former 

Red Bull Racing driver David Coulthard’s 

performance with the RB7 F1 car, which 

swept last year’s Formula 1 driver and 

constructor championships. In addition to 

blazing fast sprints between ION Orchard/ 

Mariott Singapore and Buyong Road near 

the Istana, Coulthard also performed 

manoeuvres such as engine breaks, donuts,

Singapore is seeing the interest in motor sports 

evolving and reaching a new peak, driven 

by the highly successful Formula 1 races. 

With not every layman getting a chance to 

experience the motor sports event and much 

to the conjecture is often misconstrued, ITE 

College West has decided to set this right 

by teaming with Kartmaster to conduct a 

“Racing Team Technical Training Course” for 

ITE students. This course will help would-be 

motor sports aspirants to gain a foothold into 

this glamorous sport. 

The course will be conducted by a renowned 

instructor Mr. Roland Chong who has been 

involved in motor sports events for many years 

in the international arena. Being an official in 

Singapore Motor Sports Association (SMSA), 

Mr Chong has officiated in the Singapore’s 

Formula 1 event. 

The scope of this course will include classroom 

sessions, rules and regulations, driving theory 

and kart preparation before embarking on 

the practical aspect of the course. Those 

who make the grade will have a chance to 

experience the real thing. They also will learn 

about the race management. Outstanding 

students will be engaged by other teams in 

the Singapore Kart Championship (SKC) & 

Asia Kart Open Championship (AKOC) events. 

As Karting is often used as a foundation 

for motor sports activities with Formula 1 

being the pinnacle, this locally trained pool 

of talents may one day become a “Team 

and burnouts, which are rarely seen, if ever, 

in Formula 1 races. 

In between Coulthard’s performance 

segments, former F1 driver Alex Yoong also 

performed similar tricks in a sleek silver Audi 

R8 LMS, while French professional racing driver 

and stuntman Frederic Johais performed a 

variety of stunts in a blue-and-silver Renault 

Megane RS, at one point climbing through 

the driver’s window and standing on the car’s 

roof while it was still moving forward. 

The last time that a Red Bull Racing showcar 

performed in Singapore was back in 2008’s 

February Chingay Parade and was a mere 

sneak peek as the F1 car segment lasted 

barely five minutes before the Chingay 

Parade proper. The time, the demonstrations 

lasted nearly an hour.

While Ryuji Miki currently represents Sparks 

Motorsports in drift races with his Nissan 

S15 ride, we take you on a blast from his 

past with his former smoking side winding 

ride - the Apexi RX-7. 

Who could forget the excitement of our 

very first Formula Drift Singapore in 2008? 

With all the tyre smoke, gorgeous cars 

and impressive displays of skills from the 

participating drift-drivers, it was worth 

standing in the scorching sun to catch the 

action live. After many crowd-pleasing 

rounds, where the drift driver fights for the 

place of champion, Ryuji Miki clinched the 

title as he out-drifted all the competition. 

We present to you his former gorgeous 

Apexi RX-7 for your viewing pleasure. 

ORIGINS 

Ryuji Miki, a racing and drifting driver from 

Tottori Prefecture, Japan, was the 2004 D1 

Grand Prix champion. Miki also competed 

in the Net’z Cup, a one make series for the 

Toyota Altezza between 2005 and its final 

season in 2006 and is nicknamed “Doki- 

Doki kun” due to his drifting style. Taking 

part in many competitions, he has left a 

trail of outstanding wins in the history of 

drift driving. Throughout the 2007 season, 

despite having to adapt to driving a left 

hand drive car for the first time, not to 

mention within a full season of racing, 

Ryuji managed to finish the Formula D 

season with great results. Reaching the 

rank of top 16 within 4 events, Ryuji finally 

adapted to the car, finishing 14th overall 

for the season. 

UNDER THE HOOD 

With Apexi as its performance workshop, 

you can be sure of this RX-7 having the 

full works done. To encourage the car to 

breathe better, an Apexi air filter was 

installed. An Apexi AX75F82 Turbo Kit, plus 

an Apexi V-mount intercooler, coupled with 

an Apexi Titanium R95 SPL Exhaust System, 

gives the car maximum performance. There 

is also an Apexi Power FC ECU, combined 

with a Sard fuel pressure regulator and 6 

Sard 550 Injectors, maintaining a constant 

pressure of fuel. Changing to an Ogura 

single plate clutch for smooth take away 

and gear changes, handling is improved by 

the inclusion of Apexi N1 PRO SPL dampers, 

a Cusco 8-point Roll Cage, with the added 

grip of Goodyear tyres and Rays Gram Lights 

rims. All these add to the ear-piercing lawn 

mower sound when the engine starts up. 

AESTHETICS 

This RX-7 stands out from the crowd with its

unique chrome Apexi full body decals that 

catches the sun rays and gives the ride an 

unearthly shimmer. This tends to emphasise 

the strong aura of the ride when Ryuji Miki 

is driving it. Grounded by an Apexi carbon 

wing, Ryuji Miki’s RX-7 is lowered and 

installed with a Car Make T&E Vertex Aero 

Kit, enabling the car to handle wonderfully 

and look good at the same time. 

VERDICT 

With the live demonstration at the 

competition, no one can doubt that 

this ride is capable of eye-popping 

performance. Together with Ryuji Miki’s 

skills and experience, it was simply history 

in the making. R

The CLS is an executive-sized sedan 

made by Mercedes-Benz, which is a cross 

between a performance coupé and an 

executive sedan. The continuous bodyline 

from front to back is one sleek curve which 

emphasizes its aerodynamic shape. While 

the design compromises the rear passenger 

space, which makes this car purely a twoplus-two 

seater only, you cannot overlook 

its sleekness and style. Intended to fit in 

between the E and S class sedans in their 

range, this CLS car also has a similar styling 

to the new Jaguar sedans, which the 

designers at Mercedes-Benz must have had 

their eyes on. Many were also confused 

about whether the CLS was named as a 

sedan version of the CLK coupés that were 

previously manufactured. The CLS 55 AMG 

are modified versions of the CLS sedans 

produced by the tuners at Mercedes- 

AMG which feature sport seats, larger air 

intakes, bigger rims with wider tyres and 

quad exhaust pipes. 

UNCOMMON PERFORMER 

The owner of this sleek performer, Jason, 

had always wanted an uncommon and fast 

performance sedan. So, the most fitting car 

for him in the end was the Mercedes-Benz 

CLS 55 AMG. In stock condition, this car 

could produce about 472 hp with 700 Nm of 

torque, but wanting his car to be in another 

class of uniqueness, he wanted to see if he 

could double the power rating into the 799 

hp regions. Finding a workshop with the 

technical know-how for the Mercedes engine 

was rather difficult, but in the end, Auto 

Spritze provided the expertise needed to 

fit the performance modifications properly 

and safely. Performance parts by MKB were 

extensively used as the stock components 

were swapped out with better performing 

ones such as the fuel rail, injectors, clutch, 

flywheel and final drive. A new MKB/AMG 

exhaust system was also installed. 

CUSTOM MADE 

Boosting horsepower with a supercharged 

engine is not an easy task as everything has 

to be tuned properly, to prevent over-heating 

and a catastrophic failure. Furthermore, with 

this being a European model, the difficulties 

were multiplied even more. One example 

was when the intake temperature kept rising 

while the engine was running; a solution was 

needed to cool the intake temperature before 

the air gets forced into the engine. After a few 

trial and error attempts, a custom intercooler

was designed and fabricated which worked 

perfectly with some fine tuning. With this 

car being such a unique model, most of the 

work on it had to be custom. This also meant 

that along with anything new, fresh problems 

and obstacles also surfaced along the way. 

Nonetheless, all of it was taken in stride 

and solved appropriately by Jason and the 

workshop. His car is now able to produce 616 

hp with 900 Nm of torque, a vast improvement 

from the stock figures. 

LOVE HANDLES 

To improve the car’s handling, AMG braces 

and bars were installed for a more rigid 

chassis. Along with the AMG Airmatic 

absorbers, the car now corners with much 

better accuracy and stability. New rims 

from Riverside and tyres from Michelin 

in 5x20 size with 255/30/20 tyres for 

the front, and massive 12x20 rims with 

325/25/20 tyres for the rear gives this car 

excellent road adhesion. The exterior of

the A.R.T. design wide body kit and the 

AMG rear spoiler that adds much needed 

down force at high speeds to keep the 

rear end stable. Inside the car you’ll 

find stock AMG dynamic seats, paddle 

shifters for quick gear changes, a carbon 

fibre gear knob and racing pedals. Inhouse 

is also a decent sound system with 

amplifiers, speakers and a subwoofer by 

Harman Kardon, controlled by the original

So what can be done to rectify this problem? Let us cover a few basics before exploring 

on some ways of improving your car’s handling characteristics such as the addition of 

a strut bar. 

KNOWING THE CHASSIS 

First and foremost, the chassis is the main structure of the the modern automobile foundation 

to which all other components attach and react. It It holds the engine firmly in place and 

supports the suspension among other functions. A stiff chassis will perform better than one one 

that flexes easily due to road uncertainties, engine engine torque or hard cornering forces. To 

stiffen the chassis, is to adhere to one of the common upgrades on a modified car, which is 

to mount strut bars to provide extra stiffness between the strut towers. 

STRUT BARS INTRODUCTION 

A strut bar is designed to reduce strut tower flex by merging two parallel strut towers 

together. This transmits the load of each strut tower during cornering via tension and 

compression to the strut bar which shares the load between both towers and reduces chassis 

flex. In practical terms, this is used to spread weight out on the two front wheels of a car to help 

it corner better, making it sturdy. 

STRAPPING STRUT BARS 

Wheels solely propagate a car’s reaction to the ground and the objective is to firmly merge all 

of the points of the chassis where the suspension attaches. This technique will in effect give the 

car more rigidity and stability. In most front mounted engine cars, a strut bar can be installed 

between the upper mounting points for the shocks or struts. This component helps to promote 

a bit of stiffness across the top of the engine compartment or the rear shock towers. As a strut 

tower bar is designed to keep car's strut tower from flexing, they distribute the pressure applied 

to one strut tower when taking a turn, to both towers instead, so as to keep the wheels in 

position. Keeping the wheels in position helps maintain the tyres in the desired position on the 

road and this will help to improve traction on the turns. A rear strut tower bar is designed to 

work like the front bar by tying the two rear strut towers together, increasing the overall chassis 

stiffness. Rear strut bars minimize under steer due to less chassis flex and improves stability 

during corner braking. 

VERDICT 

Making the chassis stronger and stiffer regenerates the other components of the car. This 

endeavour not only boosts the car’s handling performance, but revitalises the car aesthetically 

as well. Strut bars are a must for any upgrade for a wider tyre and wheel combination. In 

summary, strut bars not only reinforce the sub frame and improve chassis stiffness, they also 

make steering quicker and more responsive. R

and will now be known as EMMA ASIA.

FINALS 

March 5 ~ 6th 2011 were the two days where most car audio fanatics gathered 

in Philippines. Held at the Zoom Tree Top Adventures at Circulo Verde, 

Calye Industriya, Libis, Quezon City, the event saw a total of 29 categories 

with 67 competition cars participating. 5 judges from Thailand were invited 

over to judge the event, and the 2 days of fierce competition ended on a 

happy note as the deserved parties took home their respective glories. 

Mr Mickey Tang, who has been arranging EMMA in Philippines for the past 

few years since its beginning, did so as to allow the 12 volt industries 

to have a proper playground for all, while continuing to improve on the 

standards every year. 

22 & 23rd January 2011 marked the dates for the grand final 

for EMMA Indonesia in 2010 and signifying the start of the 1st 

Round of Heats for 2011. The event saw a 40-strong number 

of competitors remaining after 3 heats, competing in the 12 

categories. The ESQL category was also being introduced in 

Indonesia for the first time and even with just 3 competitors 

participating, it sparked a lot of interest from the crowds. 

The Ancol “AudioBlast It’s All Indonesia EMMA” contest was 

proudly supported by major brands like Pioneer, Focal, Alpine 

and many more, with the venue being held at Indonesia’s “Ancol 

Jakarta Bay City”, Jakarta’s largest and most popular recreation 

park, which had loads of fun attractions. EMMA Indonesia, which 

was founded by Mr Wahyu who was already very well known in 

the I.C.E industry since EMMA started organising competitions 

3 years back, and has become one of the very well recognized 

sanction car audio events in Indonesia.

A wind shapes nature in a way that creates unusual and intriguing formations. The Scirocco looks like a 

car that is shaped by the same forces, creating a car that looks menacing and sounds even better. 

The name of this beautifully styled sports 

coupe has a rather interesting background, 

originally derived from the Greek name 

“sirokos”, which is actually the name of a 

Mediterranean wind that forms itself from 

the Sahara and Arabian deserts and is pulled 

northward towards the Southern coasts of Europe. 

Most of the other VW car models have 

also been named after well known winds like 

the Passat, Jetta and the Bora. 

HISTORY 

Manufactured since 1974, the Scirocco is 

now in its third generation which went on 

sale to the public in Europe in 2008 and the 

rest of the world in 2009, but it only managed 

to reach our shores recently, but since 

then, people have been grabbing them off 

the shelves, probably due to its awesome 

cool and slick looks, coupled with two awesome 

engine choices and a super slick and 

advanced transmission system, DSG. The Scirocco 

in this article is powered by the venerable 

EA888 2.0-litre engine that has been 

tuned by mTm to make sure the car still goes 

like a bullet even with the additional weight 

of the ICE equipment. 

BIGGER IS BETTER 

Although the car originally came with a set 

of unique and good looking 18 inch rims, the 

owner eventually decided to have it traded 

for a new set of even larger 19 inch mTm 

Bimoto rims with a slightly darker grey colour 

than the original VW Interlagos alloys, but 

nonetheless, it fills the car’s already huge 

wheel arches better, and the thinner tyres 

definitely improve the car’s cornering abilities. 

The addition of the Charactere bodykit 

gives the entire car a slightly lowered and 

meaner look, plus the mTm quad catback exhaust 

system completes the aggressive styling 

while give the exhaust sound more body. 

Having a faster flowing exhaust system is also 

essential because the engine has also gotten 

an mTm stage 1 ECU tuning job to improve on 

its power output and responsiveness, so this 

new exhaust system is more than capable of 

getting rid of the extra unwanted exhaust 

gases from the engine. The BMC drop in air 

filter allows the engine to suck in clean air 

from the outside much easier and with less 

resistance than the original air filter. Controlling 

this car’s awesome acceleration and 

speeds is a set of TT-RS 4 pot brake callipers,

ON THE INSIDE 

Open the boot and you will find an audio install 

with shiny white enclosures around the 

amps and woofer, which looks a lot like as if 

it’s originally part of the car itself, a truly professional 

custom job carried out by blending it 

to the original fitments of the car. 

The first thing that you will notice is the Focal 

subwoofer located right in the centre, taking 

advantage of the space where the spare tyre 

used to be located at. On the left side of the 

woofer is a market leading and unbeatable 

music quality producing Pioneer DEQ-P90 Digi-

tal Signal Processor to handle all the audio parameters 

and crossover settings, this processor 

is connected to a AXM-P90RS master unit 

which is located inside the cabin; all controls 

for the sound processor come from this single 

control unit. 

To the right side is a 1 fared Brax power capacitor, 

which stores electrical power for the 

Mosconi 2 channel power amplifier that’s used 

to drive the Focal subwoofer, and above these 

three items are two more Mosconi power 

amplifiers, which power the Micro Precision 

speakers. There’s a four channel amp to power 

the 7 series tweeters at the front as well as a 

pair of 5 series mid range speakers, while the 

last remaining amp is a two channel for powering 

the 7 series low-mid range speakers.
