<strong>Collapse</strong> & <strong>High</strong> <strong>Collapse</strong> requirements<br />
Among the primary functions of an Oil & Gas tubular is the preservation<br />
of its hole integrity enabling to further develop, maintain<br />
and produce the well. Casing tubulars in particular are<br />
expected to resist a large range of external loads which will tend<br />
to collapse them [1].<br />
A short list of external pressure sources includes: <strong>for</strong>mation or<br />
reservoir fluids, during exploration or production, clay and salt<br />
which are well known challenging <strong>for</strong>mations to drill through,<br />
mud systems, brine or cement, sea water in riser or line pipe<br />
applications.<br />
The need <strong>for</strong> <strong>High</strong> <strong>Collapse</strong> per<strong>for</strong>mances arises when API <strong>grades</strong><br />
cannot provide satisfactory solutions to the basic relation: collapse<br />
resistance - OD - ID / drift - steel grade. This is particularly<br />
true <strong>for</strong> :<br />
• Exploration wells where additional safety margins are necessary<br />
due to the uncertainties of the <strong>for</strong>mation and pressures to be<br />
encountered.<br />
• Slim well designs where special drifts are common practice.<br />
• Deep and <strong>High</strong> Pressure wells which require optimization of all<br />
technical parameters in order to reach the pay zone with a“profitable”<br />
production size.<br />
• Deep water risers whose profitability is measured against each<br />
pound gained.<br />
• Sour Service environments where corrosion resistance adds one<br />
more constraint to the equation<br />
• Projects with the highest reliability standards (Health, Safety,<br />
Environment, HP-HT) which require a meaningful guarantee<br />
of per<strong>for</strong>mance<br />

with <strong>High</strong> <strong>Collapse</strong> per<strong>for</strong>mance provide solutions to these growing<br />
challenges in a safe and reliable manner, while maintaining<br />
full compliance with API 5CT (ISO 11960).<br />
What is collapse<br />
<strong>Collapse</strong> resistance is a property of the pipe body itself. It is limited<br />
by the pipe failure in the circumferential direction when external<br />
pressure is applied.<br />
FEA simulation of <strong>Collapse</strong><br />
Four failure modes have been defined [2] based on failure pattern<br />
observation and mechanical rules (refer to figure below). The<br />
“Yield”failure mode is triggered when stresses are in excess of the<br />
Yield strength in the hoop direction. On the other extreme, the<br />
“elastic”failure mode is an unstable buckling in the circumferential<br />
direction, occurring with stresses initially below the Yield<br />
strength of the material. These four domains are continuously<br />
positioned as a function of the ratio of the outside diameter to<br />
the wall thickness, or D/t ratio:<br />
Influencing factors<br />
<strong>Collapse</strong> resistance is influenced by a complex combination of<br />
geometrical characteristics, material properties, applied loads,<br />
and load conditions:<br />
Geometry<br />

Outside diameter versus wall thickness<br />
<strong>Collapse</strong> resistance is mainly influenced by the geometrical D/t<br />
ratio. In the range of OCTG products, with ratios between 10 to<br />
40, collapse pressure resistance varies with a factor up to 30:<br />
Combined loads<br />
<strong>Collapse</strong> resistance is influenced by additional loads: Axial tension<br />
and compression, bending, torsion or internal pressure.
Pipe behavior under combined loads is described by mechanical<br />
laws most commonly illustrated by the Von Mises Equivalent stress<br />
(VME) ellipse and collapse <strong>for</strong>mula [2].<br />
Mechanical properties<br />
<strong>Collapse</strong> resistance is a function of the pipe mechanical properties<br />
such as Yield strength, ultimate strength, Young’s modulus, or residual<br />
stresses. Yield strength in particular is a major contributor to<br />
the collapse resistance :<br />
External pressure chamber<br />
Among influencing parameters such as end-fittings, induced supporting<br />
loads or pressure gradient (pressure build up with time),<br />
the pipe sample length shows dominant influence.API 5C3 calls <strong>for</strong><br />
a minimum sample length of 2 times the pipe OD. However tests<br />
demonstrated that only a length greater than 8 times the pipe OD<br />
will ensure a stabilized and conservative rating, comparable to a<br />
full length of pipe in the well.<br />
Chemical composition has some limited influence once a fully martensitic<br />
structure is achieved. It is reached with Quench &Tempered<br />
heat treatment process (Q&T) which also allows to minimize and<br />
control residual stresses.<br />
Ovality and Eccentricity<br />
The typical test report below shows the applied pressure up to the<br />
guaranteed minimum rating, followed by a hold time, then final<br />
pressure build up until failure.<br />
Ovality shows a significant effect as illustrated on the graph below [3] :<br />
Tests have proven that eccentricity of the pipe body does not show<br />
a significant influence on the collapse resistance, as long as compliance<br />
with API 5CT wall thickness tolerance is maintained.<br />
Testing parameters<br />
Practically, collapse resistance is measured on a portion of pipe<br />
that has been precisely mapped. It is then mounted into an external<br />
pressure chamber, submitted to hydraulic pressure and recorded.<br />
API collapse values<br />
Starting in the 1920’s, collapse calculation <strong>for</strong>mulas were addressed<br />
in the API Society [4]. They were derived from the need to<br />
reconcile simple theoretical models with physical test results. In<br />
order to improve the predicting accuracy of these models, subsequent<br />
revisions of the API 5C3 standard have included new <strong>for</strong>mulas<br />
that better account <strong>for</strong> the influential parameters. Yet, API collapse<br />
