Truck, SUV & Off-Road New Products 

The light-truck industry was particularly hard hit by the recession that 

began about three years ago, but at last, the tide seems to be turning. The 

automakers are seeing definite and consistent sales increases, and while 

some sectors of the truck market remain tentative, fullsize pickups and 

crossover vehicles are clearly on the upswing. Of the 10 top-selling vehicles 

in January of 2011, according to Automotive News, the Ford F-Series 

pickup was number one (again), the Chevrolet Silverado was number two 

and the Honda CR-V was number six. 

At the 2010 SEMA Show, exhibitors in 

the Truck, SUV & Off-Road section created 

a similar feeling of optimism about the 

year ahead. With booth registration up 9% 

from the previous Show, the upper level of 

the South Hall was a shrine to this market 

featuring more than 250 exhibitors. New 

product registrations also soared, with truck, 

SUV and off-road exhibitors placing 284 

products in the New Products Showcase. 

While their entries tend to run the 

gamut of applications, manufacturers in 

this market dedicated the bulk of their 

research and design money to five prod-

uct categories. As evident by the registration 

data taken from this year’s Showcase, 

five product categories dominated exhibitors’s 

submissions—winches, suspension 

accessories, trailer hitches, driving lights 

and bumpers. Much of the new product 

activity in the off-road segment centered 

around Jeep Wrangler applications, which 

commanded significant investment among 

manufacturers in the segment. The Jeep 

Wrangler was also the most frequently-seen 

display vehicle on the floor in the off-road 

segment, while the F-150 was the most- 

displayed truck. 

Four out of five buyers (74%), visited the 

New Products Showcase, where truck, SUV 

and off-road manufacturers made a strong 

impact on attendees. Their entries were 

scanned 11,051 times by attending media 

and buyers using handheld remote scanners. 

Typically, once buyers identify the products 

they find most intriguing, they hit the 

SEMA Show floor and meet with exhibitors 

face-to-face. This year, active buyers in 

the truck, SUV and off-road market took 

advantage of the opportunity, introducing 

themselves and scanning their badges at 

booths in this section a total of 31,252 times. 

The following are New Products Showcase 

entries dedicated to truck, SUV and offroad 

applications. Along with the products, 

we’ve interviewed industry executives to get 

their thoughts about the trends they perceive 

and some words of advice about what might 

lie ahead. You’ll see their comments and 

predictions as you page through the story. 

n Forty Wranglers were on display in exhibitor booths, 

combined with another 54 on display throughout the Las 

Vegas Convention Center during the 2010 SEMA Show. 

Clearly dominating the floor, Jeep Wrangler was presented 

with the 2010 SEMA Award for Hottest 4x4-SUV.

website is vital. With a properly built site, 

retailers have the chance to come up on 

the first page of Google’s results when a 

consumer searches a term such as “Truck 

Caps Los Angeles.” Google knows where 

customers are located and can refer them 

to a retailer who has a highly optimized 

website. But you get what you pay for. 

Many businesses spend around $1,500 on 

a website, but a $5,000 site has a chance to 

be your top-performing salesperson. The 

same goes for things such as e-mail marketing 

and Facebook for business. Look at 

how many of the right customers you can 

put your company and products in front 

of, and the cost per customer. People are 

out there buying the products you sell. 

You just have to make sure they’re buying 

them from you.

The overall trend is shifting back to

Everybody is concerned now about 

getting a good solid product, and the 

clients for our warehouse distributorship 

want the best components they 

can get for their money. Consumers 

definitely want parts and products that 

bring good bang for the buck but also 

do exactly what they’re supposed to 

do. The higher-end components are 

actually starting to fare better with 

the general public, regardless of price. 

I think that the economy is definitely 

getting stronger. We’ve seen an increase 

in younger people coming in with newer 

vehicles, and the older crowd is still buying 

new vehicles or good used vehicles 

and putting the best components on 

them. Overall, the economy is starting 

to turn around.

been down due to the economy, and

back up, indicating that the economy is 

recovering. We’ve seen drastic changes 

to truck chassis this year, with GM and 

Ford creating more aggressive trucks 

with larger axles, stronger frames and 

better towing and hauling capacities, 

but there are still a lot of opportunities 

for companies such as Hellwig to 

upgrade suspensions. Another current 

trend is “ready-made” off-road race 

vehicles for the Baja environment. 

For instance, Ivan Stewart has a readymade 

race vehicle, and Local Motors 

introduced its Rally Fighter this year 

at the SEMA Show. With off-road 

vehicles being sold as complete packages, 

it would seem that packaging offroad 

upgrades would be a good strategy 

as well.

The most prevalent 

trend that we’ve seen 

over the last few years 

is the availability of 

suspension upgrades 

for the truck market 

and the exploitation of 

these on the consumer end. Autocross 

events across the country are seeing an 

increasing number of truck entrants, and 

the feature trucks that we run monthly 

are upgraded with items such as tubular 

control arms and big disc brakes at a rate 

of nearly 100%. We have also seen a 

huge increase in popularity among the 

’67–’72 Chevy C10 market. With the 

growing prices fetched by musclecars and 

hot rods, the truck market is one of the 

last bastions of affordable classic automobiles. 

The market is much broader 

than retailers may suspect. We attend 

the obvious truck-related events, such 

as the F100 Supernationals, but we also 

cover more-traditional hot-rod events, 

such as the NSRA Nats and Goodguys 

Columbus. These are huge gatherings 

in the hot-rod community and have a 

great truck presence, but we see few truck 

retailers catering to these large events. 

Retailers should also join the SEMA 

Action Network to ensure that the government 

does not run you out of business 

with tax increases and regulations.

doing better. There is a general shift away 

from the day-to-day truck products and 

back to where our base came from, which 

is the truck enthusiast. People are willing

The economy is responsible for a portion 

of that. People have less money to spend 

on commodity products, but the people 

who are serious about their trucks are 

spending money, and there are enough 

good-quality WDs supplying retailers 

quickly that they can keep the consumer 

happy. What the retailers don’t want 

to do is be so concerned about price 

that they forget about profit. Profit 

is what’s going to keep you in business. 

The retailer’s biggest problem is 

getting the consumer in the door. I 

would challenge the product manufacturers 

to keep retailers in mind when 

they advertise in order to make it easier 

for them to draw customers. The consumer 

should be driven to the retailer by 

the manufacturer.

market, that means gaining horsepower

maintaining ever-more-restrictive emissions 

codes. In pickups, it’s fuel economy 

and trucks that keep getting lighter. 

SUVs are featuring more rear-seat entertainment 

and smaller sizes yet with three 

rows of seats. For retailers, balance is 

crucial. You need product on the shelves 

to beat the Internet sellers by having 

it for the customer right now, but you 

can’t overbuy and get stuck with inventory 

because the vehicle changed or a 

product’s popularity faded. Perhaps the 

biggest opportunity is installing items 

that the DIYers do not want to do or 

can’t do, and the biggest threat is gas 

prices going north of $4 per gallon and 

how that might affect new-vehicle sales 

and the activities of weekend-warrior 

auto enthusiasts.

We are seeing a resurgence

Chevy CKs, as well as

SUV side, the market includes basic

creature comforts. We’re not seeing the 

large lifts in suspension as much anymore, 

and lowered trucks are coming 

back. From a styling perspective, there 

is a lot of blackout—black wheels, black 

steps, black grilles and so on. People are 

also hanging on to their trucks much 

longer and wanting to make them look 

unique. For now, business is definitely 

back on the upswing. We are seeing sales 

increases across the entire product line, 

and I think consumers still want great 

quality and service even though they may 

not do a full truck build all in one ticket. 

However, the potential for gas to go over 

$5 per gallon could slow us down. It’s 

important to understand the consumer’s 

budget and keep him or her coming back 

for more.

availability of high-quality, affordable 

parts, components and accessories has 

made it much easier for home-shop truck 

enthusiasts to realize their desires. Many 

now tackle projects with a bit more confidence 

than would have been possible 

when their only recourse was junkyard 

shopping and hands-on fabrication of 

parts and components. The continuation 

of R&D and an ever-growing selection 

of aftermarket goods will be the 

most important driving forces behind 

the tremendous growth in the classic 

truck segment.

the proper time and testing into the 

product development process. Ask the 

manufacturers what kind of testing they 

have done. Bottom line, sooner rather 

than later, you can’t be using your granddaddy’s 

lift kit anymore.
