Google Maps Unit Lesson Plan Bundle

Google Maps GPS Buddy will have your students fully engaged in this exciting lesson where one student will be acting as a GPS for another student who will be "DRIVING" on Google Maps according to their partner's directions.

Students of all ages can enjoy this activity as it is meant for 3rd-12th grades! Students will each have a tutorial demonstrating how to use Google Maps with traditional address entries and additional links are provided to make this a "JUMP RIGHT IN!" activity! With the help of QR-Codes, younger grades will be right into the action and will have everything they need to help their partner reach their destination!

With 7 destinations, there is enough to introduce map reading to younger grades, but difficult enough to challenge even your seniors! We believe map reading has become a lost art and students need to have spatial and geographic awareness long before they get behind the wheel and rely completely on their GPS or smart phone.

The Teacher Cheat Sheet makes staying on track and pacing your students a breeze! With a click, you can pull up the exact directions with the round they are on. We provide notes on each destination and some tips along the way. Print this off or have the PDF open on your computer and this lesson is as easy as it gets!

Copy and paste student directions, attach two player files, and that's it! Your lesson is good to go!

Click "Preview" to see both the Driver and GPS directions!

Standards

to see state-specific standards (only available in the US).
Understand that shapes in different categories (e.g., rhombuses, rectangles, and others) may share attributes (e.g., having four sides), and that the shared attributes can define a larger category (e.g., quadrilaterals). Recognize rhombuses, rectangles, and squares as examples of quadrilaterals, and draw examples of quadrilaterals that do not belong to any of these subcategories.
Draw points, lines, line segments, rays, angles (right, acute, obtuse), and perpendicular and parallel lines. Identify these in two-dimensional figures.
Use a pair of perpendicular number lines, called axes, to define a coordinate system, with the intersection of the lines (the origin) arranged to coincide with the 0 on each line and a given point in the plane located by using an ordered pair of numbers, called its coordinates. Understand that the first number indicates how far to travel from the origin in the direction of one axis, and the second number indicates how far to travel in the direction of the second axis, with the convention that the names of the two axes and the coordinates correspond (e.g., 𝘹-axis and 𝘹-coordinate, 𝘺-axis and 𝘺-coordinate).
Find the area of right triangles, other triangles, special quadrilaterals, and polygons by composing into rectangles or decomposing into triangles and other shapes; apply these techniques in the context of solving real-world and mathematical problems.
Solve problems involving scale drawings of geometric figures, including computing actual lengths and areas from a scale drawing and reproducing a scale drawing at a different scale.
