Unerring PMC Accuracy for Midsized Control Rooms

The PMC 6-2 active studio monitor tells you the truth about your recordings, delivering unflinching accuracy session after session. Designed for reference-grade nearfield and midfield monitoring in midsized rooms, the PMC 6-2 is a 3-way design with bespoke drivers — two 150mm woofers, a 55mm midrange, and a 27mm soft-dome tweeter — mounted in the company’s acclaimed ATL (Advanced Transmission Line) cabinet. ATL is PMC’s proprietary bass-loading technology that extends LF response while reducing distortion, enhancing phase and frequency linearity, and optimizing SPL capability. Equipped with custom state-of-the-art Class D amplification and sophisticated acoustic engineering, the PMC 6-2 provides a spacious soundfield with stunning depth, clarity, imaging, and punch. Your monitors are the key to great-sounding recordings. Step up to a new level of accuracy with PMC.

New drivers for improved performance

The PMC 6-2 features two newly designed 150mm bass drivers that work in tandem with ATL technology to deliver significantly improved bass response that rivals that of many larger monitors. The tweeter used for the PMC 6-2 is a customized version of an HF driver manufactured by SB Acoustics, a company renowned for their high-quality drive units. Together, these advanced drivers represent yet a new level of accuracy and transparency for PMC, whose monitors have been critical components of world-class control rooms for decades. To assist in providing a generous listening sweet spot, the midrange driver is mounted in PMC’s proprietary n-compass waveguide, which optimizes dispersion to achieve coherent, linear response across a broad horizontal and vertical area. The PMC 6-2’s unerring accuracy, extended frequency response, and compact form factor make it an excellent main monitor for mobile recording trucks and other applications where space is at a premium but monitoring precision is essential.

Optimized electronics, formidable power

The PMC 6-2 is quad-amplified by next-generation ICEPower amplifiers delivering 400 watts to each of the four drivers through a cutting-edge crossover system. For setup flexibility, the XLR input is switchable between analog and digital AES. A joint venture with the iconic high-end consumer electronics company Bang & Olufsen, ICEPower was founded in 1999 at a time when Class D amplification, which had been around since the 1950s, had matured and was starting to be deployed in pro audio applications such as active monitor speakers; where high power, light weight, and cool-running operation were desirable. ICEPower’s close association with B&O gave them access to the resources, technical expertise, quality-control processes, and business acumen of a well-established company, and today, the company’s advanced amplification modules are found in world-class products throughout the pro audio, consumer electronics, and automotive industries.

Advanced Transmission Line Technology delivers cleaner, deeper bass

Since their first professional studio main monitor design was embraced by the music, broadcast, and post-production industries in the early 1990s, PMC has become famous for their proprietary Advanced Transmission Line (ATL) technology. A transmission line is a method of loading a low-frequency speaker in a cabinet so that undesirable frequencies radiating from the rear of the driver are absorbed, allowing only the lowest frequencies to pass. These emerge from a front-baffle vent, which effectively acts as an auxiliary LF driver that extends bass response while absorbing undesirable low frequencies that contribute to harmonic distortion, clouding the upper bass and midrange. One of the keys to PMC speakers’ natural, highly detailed sound, ATL technology delivers deeper bass and higher output from smaller cabinets, while providing rich, full sound at any listening level. And because ATL bass extension doesn’t vary with volume levels, the low end is well-defined and always in balance, even when listening quietly.

Mixes that translate

Engineers at Sweetwater know there’s no substitute for midrange clarity in a monitor. This is the heart of your mix, and it remains relevant regardless of playback system. That’s why you can spend hours struggling to achieve a perfect balance and end up with nothing but frustration, listening fatigue, and a mix that doesn’t “translate.” In addition to improving bass response, PMC’s ATL technology also mitigates troublesome frequencies and eliminates port noise that can mask the midrange in other types of monitor speaker designs. As a result, you’ll find it’s easier to place, for instance, vocals and solo instruments in a mix, allowing you to achieve an ideal balance that translates to the world outside your studio.

Truly Phenomenal Monitors

I wanted to live with these monitors for awhile before posting a review - I've been using them for about two months now.

These monitors are Killer. I checked out products in a similar price range and, while they all sounded professional, I wasn't quite happy with any pair besides the PMCs.

I tried (and was convinced that I wanted) the ATC SCM45a, and realized that they're lacking at least an entire bottom octave of important content. I know that ATC just released a line of subs to compliment the SCMs, but I wasn't able to afford $13k for the monitors plus $10k for a pair of subs. Plus, the lack of DSP means that I'd have to spend quite awhile balancing the subs against the tops.

I tried the Dutch & Dutch 8c. Plenty of bass and power, but pretty hi-fi in presentation. They're more expensive than the PMCs, and I didn't feel like they were well-suited to detailed mastering work. A joy to listen to - just a little too smooth.

I tried a pair of Barefoots and felt they sat in-between the ATCs and D&D. They had nice bottom end, but not as powerful as D&D. The high end was detailed, but not as nice as the ATCs. They're solid, but didn't jump out at me.

Genelecs and Focals, too, but neither were right for me.

PMC is where it's at. The three-way design sounds Gorgeous, detailed, clear, and spacious. The low end extension is unreal - I believe the woofers start moving at 12Hz, are only about 6dB under at 20Hz, and linear from the mid-30s up. The low end is also responsive and tight, making kick drums especially easy to work with. The mid-range is exceptional, and is very detailed and open. The high end is very detailed without being harsh. I had tried a pair of twotwos, and felt that the high end, while detailed, was a little harsh - not so with these. Also, PMC is an established brand with an extensive product line for mastering - I can continue to upgrade if needed and grow within the brand.

If you're reading this review, you probably know the specs so I'll mention other things that might be useful.

These monitors can get LOUD. I find that lots of volume lives near the top of my dial, just fyi. Also, these sound so clear that you can pummel yourself with SPL without realizing it. A good problem to have. The powerful amps also mean that transients have the juice they need to leap out of the mix.

These require 50 hours of burn-in. Before burn-in, they sound very different - the bass response in particular was quite lumpy, while the tweeters sounded constrained. I didn't meter them, but it seemed like the overall volume was a bit lower as well. I've heard the "burn-in as conspiracy" thing, but these boxes are so precisely tuned with the transmission line that everything really needs to settle in order to deliver.

They look great in person. These are definitely black in color - not quite piano black, but also not gray as they appear in some photos. I'm a tall-ish average sized male, and I can move these around by myself.

I spoke with Maurice, the U.S. PMC rep, and he gave me some great advice regarding setup. My room is a bit small, and he recommended placing the monitors at least 5' away from each other due to the wide dispersion pattern. To this end, he recommended swapping the usual L-R orientation, placing the tweeters as far away as possible from each other. Previously the center image seemed over-emphasized and cluttered until I remembered Maurice's advice. Proper placement fixed the issue. Also, the manual places the proper height orientation at the center of the midrange driver. Maurice mentioned that it was half-way between the driver and the tweeter, and I like this sound much better. It brings out a little more detail in the highs.

I'm able to work much more quickly on these monitors - decisions are immediately either good or bad. I can trust these monitors! They're not hyped, they're just honest.

Importantly, my clients get to experience music in a special way when they do attended sessions. It's like dining at a Michelin-star restaurant - who knew music could sound this good? So very happy with these monitors.

PMC6-2

PMC6-2 just arrived to a new home here in the philippines. My technical guys set up the speakers using a primaluna evo 400 preamp and using XLR interconnects. I take my hat off to this superb performing active monitors. The set up is to be used for my audiophile hifi system. Sound reproduction is great producing very clear notes of the instruments and voice, soundstage is wide for a 5mX10m listening room, no ear fatigue, well balance lo-mid-hi. Congratulations to the PMC team
