Subtask 72-00-00-210-161-A
A. Visual Inspection (After Bird Strike (Foreign Object Damage))
(1) After a report of a bird strike or if a foreign object goes into the engine, do a visual inspection before
the next flight for signs of bird debris or damage as follows:
NOTE: It can be very difficult to determine if a bird strike has occurred. It is necessary to do an in-
spection after the first report of a bird strike as it will become more difficult with elapsed run
time and bad weather to see signs of a bird strike.
NOTE: You can use the LIGHT SOURCE - ULTRA-VIOLET to help identify bird debris. In darkened
conditions, the proteins left behind in the bird snarge (smeared bird remains on surfaces)
fluoresce with a greenish glow in the ultra violet illumination. A continuous smear is typical for
a bird strike.
NOTE: New damage is damage that was not accepted or repaired before. If it is not known if the
damage was accepted or repaired before, you must do the inspection as if it was new dam-
age.
(4) If any damage, feathers or snarge are found in the inlet area, you must take an overall photo of the
damage and a close-up photo with scale for reference. Collect the bird feathers and/or snarge as
follows:
(a) If bird feathers are found, collect the feathers and put them in the sealable BAG - PLASTIC. Put a
label on the bag with the engine serial number and the area of the engine from where they were
collected.
(b) For feathers collected outside of the United States, you must put the whole feather in the
isopropyl alcohol (Material No. P11-014) and dry before you put it in the BAG - PLASTIC, for
shipment to the United States.
(c) If a large section of the bird is found not damaged, pluck (do not cut) a variety of feathers with a
color pattern and do the procedures specified in Step 4.A.(4)(a) and Step 4.A.(4)(b).
(d) For blood smear or organic remains (snarge) on the engine surface, remove with the
lint-free cotton cloth (Material No. P05-005), or STERILE GAUZE PAD or isopropyl
alcohol (Material No. P11-014). Put the removed bird remains, along with the lint-free cotton
cloth (Material No. P05-005), or STERILE GAUZE PAD or isopropyl alcohol (Material No. P11-
014) in the BAG - PLASTIC that can be sealed. Put a label on the bag with the engine serial
number and the area of the engine where they were collected.
(e) Send the bird feathers or snarge collected to the nearest Pratt & Whitney field representative for
species identification.
(5) Do a visual inspection of the turbine exhaust case and the Low Pressure Turbine (LPT) 3rd stage
blades for damage or pieces of metal (Ref. AMM TASK 72-00-00-210-812) .
(Ref. Fig. Visual Examination (After Bird Strike) - (Exhaust Area) SHEET 1)
(6) Return the engine to service if you do not see any signs of bird debris or damage and none of what
follows were reported:
(a) The flight crew reported a cooked bird smell in the cockpit or cabin.
(b) The engine surged or stalled after the bird strike. If a surge or stall did occur, do an inspection of
the engine after surge or stall (Ref. AMM TASK 72-00-00-200-809) .
(c) The engine parameters changed after the bird strike:
1 If the engine parameters changed after the bird strike, record all Electronic Centralized
Aircraft Monitoring (ECAM) warning or messages and do the applicable troubleshooting
procedures.
(7) If the fan blades are damaged, an engine surge/stall occurred or engine parameters changed,
determine if inspection of the NF speed probe is necessary:
(Ref. Fig. Visual Examination (Bird Strike or (Foreign Object Damage)) - (Inspection Flow
Chart) SHEET 1)
(a) If fan blade damage is found and is in serviceable limits, determine if the NF speed probe is
functional after the bird strike:
1 If the NF speed probe operates correctly, remove and examine it in 750 hours or when the
fan blades are removed, whichever comes first. Refer to (Ref. AMM TASK 77-11-22-000-
801) for removal and (Ref. AMM TASK 77-11-22-210-801) for inspection.
2 If the NF speed probe does not operate correctly, remove and examine it in ten days by
current failed Prognostics and Health Management Unit (PHMU) dispatch requirement.
Refer to (Ref. AMM TASK 77-11-22-000-801) for removal and (Ref. AMM TASK 77-11-22-
210-801) for inspection.
(b) If the fan blade is not in limits, remove the NF speed probe in one flight cycle and examine. Refer
to (Ref. AMM TASK 77-11-22-000-801) for removal and (Ref. AMM TASK 77-11-22-210-801)
for inspection.
NOTE: A vane that is not aligned is turned along its axis, at a different angle than the adjacent
vanes.
1 Move the LPC Stator Vane Actuator (SVA) to the fully open position (Ref. AMM TASK 75-
31-00-200-803) .
2 Put the flexible borescope through AP LPC-1 and move it counterclockwise (aft looking
forward) until the borescope port is in view
.(Ref. Fig. Visual Examination (After Bird Strike (Foreign Object Damage)) - (LPC Borescope
Ports))
3 Examine the vanes as you retract the borescope. The borescope must be retracted slowly
to get a clear view of the airfoil at the outboard side of the IGVs. The borescope must stay in
focus on the trailing edges of the airfoils. It can help to record during the inspection process.
4 Move the LPC SVA to the fully closed position (Ref. AMM TASK 75-31-00-200-803) .
5 Put the flexible borescope through AP LPC-1 and move it counterclockwise (aft looking
forward) until the borescope port is in view
.(Ref. Fig. Visual Examination (After Bird Strike (Foreign Object Damage)) - (LPC Borescope
Ports))
6 Examine the vanes as you retract the borescope. The borescope must be retracted slowly
to get a clear view of the airfoil at the outboard side of the IGVs. The borescope must stay in
focus on the trailing edges of the airfoils. It can help to record during the inspection process.
7 Contact Pratt and Whitney if any vanes that are not aligned are found
.(Ref. Fig. Visual Examination (After Bird Strike (Foreign Object Damage)) - (Vane Not
Aligned) SHEET 1)
(c) If you see signs of bird debris or new damage in the LPC, use the KIT
CONTROL (PWA110187) or the SYSTEM BOROSCOPE (VIDEO) (CTE8003) and do a
borescope inspection of the High Pressure Compressor (HPC) airfoils (Ref. AMM TASK 72-35-
00-290-801) .
(d) If you see signs of bird debris or new damage in the HPC, do a borescope inspection of the
combustion chamber and High Pressure Turbine (HPT) with the KIT CONTROL (PWA110187)
or SYSTEM BOROSCOPE (VIDEO) (CTE8003) . Refer to (Ref. AMM TASK 72-41-00-290-802)
for the combustion chamber and (Ref. AMM TASK 72-51-00-290-802) for the HPT.
(e) If you see signs of bird debris or new damage in the rear stages of the HPT, do a borescope
inspection of the LPT with the KIT CONTROL (PWA110187) or SYSTEM BOROSCOPE
(VIDEO) (CTE8003) . Refer to (Ref. AMM TASK 72-53-00-200-801) .
(12) If you find signs of damage and the damage is more than the repairable limits, remove the engine
from service.
(13) If you find signs of damage and the damage is in the serviceable or repairable limits, make any
necessary repairs.
(14) Examine the inlet to the air/oil heat exchanger for blockage. Remove any debris with the BRUSH
- WIRE and the VACUUM CLEANER. If you cannot remove the blockage, replace the air/oil heat
exchanger. Refer to (Ref. AMM TASK 79-21-11-000-802) and (Ref. AMM TASK 79-21-11-400-
802) .
(Ref. Fig. Visual Examination (After Bird Strike) - (Air/Oil Heat Exchanger) SHEET 1)
(15) If there is no damage, return the engine to service.
NOTE: It is permitted to do a wash in 25 flight hours or 10 cycles to remove bird debris from the en-
gine gaspath (Ref. AMM TASK 72-00-00-100-802) .
