Cisco Unified Communications Manager Express Phone User and Seat Licensing Updates
Q. Why is Cisco updating its licensing model for Cisco Unified Communications Manager Express (CME)? A. We are updating the licensing to simplify the ordering process. For example, we are moving from 50phone user SKUs to 3-user SKUs to make ordering and stocking easier. We are also moving the phone user license from seven price points down to three. With this change we aligned the new licenses to the Cisco Unified Communications Licensing (UCL) structure to make it easier to determine the types of licenses needed. The new Cisco Unified CME licenses mirror the Basic, Essential, and Enhanced categories of Cisco UCL. Q. What are the licensing updates for Cisco Unified Communications Manager Express? A. There are two updates:
Phone user license updates: Cisco has reduced the number of SKUs in order to simplify ordering and stocking. Before this change, Cisco offered a license for every type of Cisco phone. Now, these 50 licenses will be retired in August 2013 and replaced with three licenses types. These new licenses will be available for purchase on January 12, 2013. These license types, called Essential, Basic, and Enhanced, are aligned with the Cisco Unified Communications Licensing structure (Table 1).

CME seat licensing: There are no updates to the SKU structure or to the bundle prices. However, the Cisco Unified CME and Cisco Survivable Remote Site Telephony (SRST) seat license SKUs have a new price point effective January 12, 2013; the new prices are listed in Table 3.

Q. I still want to order the old phone user licenses. Can I do that? A. Yes, until August 12, 2013.
Q. What is the timing for these updates? A. All these updates will be effective on January 12, 2013. The old phone user licensing will continue to be orderable until August 12, 2013.

Q. How do these updates align to the Cisco UCL model? A. The new Cisco Unified CME phone user licenses use the same categories as those of the Cisco UCL model: Basic, Essential, and Enhanced. Each category represents a type of phone or user, so it is easier to determine which one to buy. (Refer to the next question for an explanation of each type of phone user license.) Unlike UCL, these CME phone user licenses have all the features upon purchase - there are no add-on feature capabilities. Therefore, when you buy and implement the phones, you get the full extent of collaboration features supported by those phones and Cisco Unified CME. Q. What is the difference between the Essential, Basic, and Enhanced licenses? A. Essential, Basic and Enhanced are categories to help determine which Cisco Unified CME phone user licenses you should buy. For Cisco Unified CME, the following phones are supported in each category:
Essential: Analog devices using analog gateways such as the Cisco VG202, VG204, VG224, or VG350 Voice Gateways; the Cisco Unified SIP Phone 3905; and the Cisco Unified IP Phone 6901.
Basic: Cisco Unified IP Phone 6911 and 6921 models. Enhanced: Cisco 9900, 8900, 7900, and 6900 Series Integrated Services Routers; the Cisco Unified IP Conference Station 7937; third-party Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) phones, Cisco Jabber Mobile, and the Cisco Jabber softphone.
Q. What are the licensing requirements? A. Cisco Unified CME requires seat licenses and phone user licenses.
Q. What rights are included in these licenses? A. The right to use the phone with Cisco Unified CME is included. Unlike UCL, these CME phone user licenses have all the features upon purchase - there are no add-on feature capabilities. Q. Are these licenses perpetual, or do the license and software expire? A. They are perpetual.
Q. What if I no longer need these Cisco Unified CME licenses? A. If you want to move to a centralized Cisco Unified Communications Manager or Cisco Hosted Collaboration Solution (HCS), you can repurpose the Cisco Unified CME seat licenses to SRST seat licenses. You can convert the CME phone user licenses to Cisco Unified Communications Licensing. (Refer to the Cisco 3X3 program for details.)
