appointea to act witn tne nremen committee relative to tbe coming i-tate convention In (his city. The request wa granted. IS JIEVIOHIAr. Akij vick. J-mes Vk-k is dead.

To tbe people of Rochester, of Monroe county, of the Empire state and of tbe country, this news will be received with surprise and rejrret. The name of the man who is dead is familiar to people all over America, wherever flowers bloom and grasses grow. He was in his time a printer, editor, author, publisher, farmer, botanist, and merchant. He was a student always. Tae life of a man who has filled all these positions, and was a success, must necessarily be eventful, active, and interesting.

Such was Mr. Vick' s. An attempt to sketch his career will be mide. James Vick was an Englishman. He was bora in Portsmouth, England, on November 23d, 1818, and was therefore- sixty-four years of age when he died.

He was in his boyhood an associate of Charles Dickens, and the acquaintance thus formed in youth was continued in after years. When Mr. Vic visited England in 1371, he passed several hours with the great novelist, recalling child-hrod reminscenees and incidents. At the age of fifteen on 1833) young Vick came to America with his parents, and settled in New York. Here he went to work to loarn the printers' trade, and became a practical journeyman.

For some time be was employed in the office of tbe Knickerbocker Magazine, and while in the composing room of that journal set type w.tb H- irace GreMey, and his acquaintance with tie man who subsequently founded the Tribune was cordial np to the time of th- eminent journalist's death. A rb-r several years exierienoe in the metropolis, air. Vick came to Rochester with his parei ts. Here be worked as a compositor in s-ve; al newspaper cflices, among them that of Mes rs. Btrong and Dawson, publishers of the Ro.

better Democrat. At one time, during a printers' strike, tbe leading journeymen started a paper called the Wurkuigttea's Advocate, hich lasted a few months, when it pass -ed into the bands of Mersrs. Frost, Vick and Frink. These con' i tie for a short time and sold out to Honry O' KeiUv. Al ut this time Air.

ick first published a weekly paper called the North Ktar, which was a Fied Dauliss and auti slavery oran, and which was aftr rwar-ls known as Fred Douglas's Paper. Mr. Vick was destined to find his proper however, in another direction. He tiod from lime to time contributed articles to the Genesee Farmer, published here by Lutber Tucker, over the signature of 'Young D.gger, 1 and these brought him into contact with the active managetrent of the paper. He became its editor, and in 1K50 assumed its pyMication, running its circulation op to So, 0l)O.

Koine three years after tots he purchased the Horticultnrallst, published by Luther Tucker at Albuiy. He reimvrd it to Rochester and associated with him in the editorial management PaTii Brry, the well-known nurseryman. In 1K.17 he began editing the horticultural department of Uuore's Rural Slew Yorker, and continued nntil IMG-'. It was while engigod on the litter journal that he began the seed enterprife which was destined to give him a world-wide reputation. Flowers had been his passion front inancy.

He described nowera and plants in liii paper, illustrating tbe articles with en-giavings. He was the first to import seeds from abroad. He sowed theae in a liule garden on nicn street, and gradually increased bis stork. He bad at various times gardens on Monroe avenue, Ujodman street aud on Main street He soon foi.nd that the tretlc was assuming intmeme proportions, and he began charging for tbe eoe.ts s-nt out. The gri at secret of his mrrus In the seed business was that he tent tbn all by mail, in answer to orders by mail by cash.

Taus he kt nothing and had no seeds returned to him unsold, as is the ca wilb bouses UiatseU on commission. The Rural Kew Yorker was the last journal wlib whl. he was connected. Abt.mt IS1.0 he began the bosuMs on an important scale, 00J la this busiluxs be save all his time and ai.i. uu.n tue balance of hU life.
