In Sierra Leone, the population has to face a health system with significant shortages that affect their right to health. In this context, St. John of God Hospital in Lunsar, which serves the Port Loko district, has seen the urgent need to promote the strengthening of the integrated network of community health services in its catchment area.
This project aims to prevent prevalent diseases and promote health, with special attention to women and children under 5 years of age, to bring health care and information to those places where it does not reach. For which both training activities for hospital staff and awareness and prevention campaigns in the communities are prepared.
The strengthening of the network is organized around four strategies to be developed in an action plan over 5 years:
Strengthening the health system through the improvement of capacities, management and coordination in primary and community care between the entities of the integrated health services network.
Training program for the prevention of child malnutrition.
Program to improve access to the health system, through the creation of a common fund formed by a group to which each member periodically deposits an amount and from which they can obtain loans or non-refundable contributions on a rotating basis, focused on pregnant women.
Program to improve access to water, through the construction and repair of four water wells in two communities.
This week, Fundación Juan Ciudad has just made it first assessment with an outstanding results: more than 150.000 people have been improved their access to a better health care.
