Step 3 of my animation process, Moodboards. After the initial brief and script development, moodboards are essential step in exploring and establishing the general look and feel of a project. We'll explore various art styles, color schemes and textures, character designs (if any)... basically the overall design language. This helps to identify the visual direction that best fits your brand and messaging. Kind of like a very specific Pinterest board. Speaking of which, I still do a lot of research using Pinterest and for a while had used Milanote to design the actual boards. But lately I've been playing around with the Freeform app that ships with the latest Mac OS. It's pretty robust and integrates well with the whole Mac ecosystem. I’ve been focusing on motion lately: 💃 Here’s what I’ve learned to get everyone in on the intel! Great motion design is magically cut together. There are a few key transitions in the animation that use a lapse in perception! When the micro goes to rotate, I remove 30 frames so it jumps from the motion of the keyboard floating, to the keyboard rotating without a gap or a bridge. The speed tricks the viewer into thinking these shots are lined up. They aren’t they’re actually about an inch off center of each other! The motion in this case is disguising the crimes in my rendering! You can also hide motion crimes with scale and motion blur! To get the boards to unfurl and to smash into the middle board. I used a scale modifier from 0-1x scale in between one frame of the animation! When you add motion blur, you can’t even see the scaling effect, as it’s to fast and too blurred for the viewer to see! Otherwise, you can normally see the scale effect. This adds to the magic of the scene. The boards appear out of nowhere, coming out of the middle board! It was exactly what I wanted! I’m also using light cleverly! Because the tall scene needs more lighting and the individual board needs more dramatic light, I’m using a bezier curved light movement along the Z axis on 10 frames. The lights start at the beginning of the stacking motion and finish at the single board. The motion of the stack moving distracts from. The lights are moving in the scene! Allowing me to bridge the lighting between the stack and the individual board! There’s lots more I did in this animation to bring it to life!
