Collins Aerospace: Strong Roots Sustain a High-Flying Manufacturer While the Collins Aerospace name may have appeared relatively recently in Windsor Locks, the company boasts deep roots in the north central Connecticut region. The global firm is a leading supplier to the aerospace and defense industry, with 80,000 employees who develop integrated and intelligent technologies that deliver sustainable and connected aviation, improved passenger safety and comfort, space exploration and more. In 2018, Rockwell Collins and UTC Aerospace Systems combined to create Collins Aerospace, now a subsidiary of RTX. Today, 3,400 employees work at the Windsor Locks facility, performing manufacturing, engineering and repair services. Collins’ Power & Controls division is headquartered in Windsor Locks, in the former Hamilton Standard facility visible from Route 20. This division, along with parts of several other Collins businesses co-located in Windsor Locks, manufactures a variety of aerospace systems at the site, including: - Engine control systems, which help optimize aircraft engine performance - Air management systems, including cabin air conditioning, temperature control and pressurization - Space systems, including critical life support systems for NASA astronauts - Propeller systems for military cargo aircraft Collins brings with it a strong legacy of innovation in creating the equipment and technologies that have built America’s air and space industries. REGION’S TALENT IS A RUNWAY TO THE FUTURE “The long history of aerospace manufacturing in the Bradley region makes it a natural choice for a company like ours,” says Ryan Hudson, vice president, Power & Controls Aftermarket and Windsor Locks site leader for Collins. “There’s an established industrial base here, including a robust supply chain, along with trade schools and universities that help provide us with a strong local talent pool to recruit from.” “Like many other manufacturing industries, the aerospace and defense sector has an aging workforce, with many employees rapidly approaching retirement,” Hudson adds. “In response, we are working to cultivate a talent pipeline and get young people excited about careers in aerospace.” “At the same time,” Hudson continues, “the industry is undergoing a digital transformation as we shift to smarter products and manufacturing processes. This means that traditional job descriptions are changing, creating opportunities for existing employees to acquire new skills and for workers in other fields to enter the industry for the first time.” Steeped in history and looking to the future, Collins Aerospace is ready for takeoff—both in the technology they develop and the opportunities they offer for exciting and challenging careers. We love a good #TransitOrientedDevelopment opportunity. The benefits of #TOD are many, including emphasis on pedestrian travel, public spaces that more thoughtfully blend into residential areas, safety, centrally located resources, and community cohesion overall. Next up is #WindsorLocks: integrated with the new CTrail train station on Main Street, the $71M mixed-income, mixed-use project will consist of 130 apartments, service-based retail, public art installations, and inviting outdoor seating areas. Our vision for this project involves repurposing the currently underutilized Windsor Locks Commons into a community hub that prioritizes inclusivity and accessibility, catering to diverse income levels, including providing Section 811 units for persons with disabilities. This initiative aligns with the town's broader TOD plan, promising a future characterized by vibrancy and connectivity.
