What is UGC NET Exam?
University Grants Commission National Eligibility Test (UGC NET) or NTA UGC NET is a national-level teaching exam which is conducted to determine the eligibility of candidates for only Assistant Professor or both Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) and Assistant Professor posts in Indian universities and colleges.
The UGC NET 2024 exam is held two times in a year for a total of 83 subjects. Until June 2018, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) conducted the NET exam on behalf of UGC. Now UGC NET exam is being conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA).
UGC NET 2024 Exam Latest Updates
The UGC NET June exam date 2024 has been postponed to 18th June 2024. UGC Chairman Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar has confirmed the news regarding the postponement of the exam date on his social media handle, X. The exam will now be held on 18th June in OMR mode across India in a single day. A formal notice regarding the new exam date will be issued on the NTA website.
The UGC NET 2024 notification has been finally released by the NTA on its website. Along with the notification PDF, the apply online link has also been activated. The candidates can fill out the UGC NET 2024 application form up to 10th May and also make corrections in it if any, from 13th to 15th May 2024.
As per the UGC Chairman Mamidala Jagadesh Kumar regarding the eligibility criteria, "The candidates who are pursuing Four Year/8 Semester Bachelor’s Degree Programme and are in their last semester/year may also apply for the UGC-NET. The candidates with a Four-Year Bachelor’s Degree Programme are allowed to appear in a subject in which they want to pursue a Ph.D. irrespective of the discipline in which they have obtained the four-year bachelor’s degree". Those who qualify the exam will be issued the UGC NET certificate and such candidates will be able to apply for the post of Assistant Professor and Junior Research Fellowship (JRF).

What's New in UGC NET 2024 Exam?
The University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued a notice stating that from the academic session 2024-25, the NET scores can be used for PhD admission. This decision has been taken to held the students ease the process of getting admission for PhD course. Through this, the students will no longer have to sit for multiple PhD entrance tests that is conducted by various institutions.
This decision was taken in the 578th meeting held on 13th March based on the recommendations of an expert committee formed. As per the decision, from June 2024 onwards, the UGC NET qualified candidates are eligible in three categories:
Category-1: Eligible for admission to PhD with JRF and for appointment as assistant professor.
Category-2: Eligible for admission to PhD without JRF and for appointment as assistant professor.
Category-3: Eligible for admission to PhD programme only.

Latest Update on UGC NET Eligibility
The candidates who are pursuing Four Year/8 Semester Bachelor’s Degree Programme and are in their last semester/year may also apply for the UGC-NET. The candidates with a Four-Year Bachelor’s Degree Programme are allowed to appear in a subject in which they want to pursue a Ph.D. irrespective of the discipline in which they have obtained the four-year bachelor’s degree
PhD admissions through NET
In addition to this, the Commission informed that the UGC NET result will be announced in percentile score along with the marks obtained by the candidates that will be used for admission. As per the Commission, “The PhD admission will be based on the combined merit of NET marks and the marks obtained in the interview/viva voce”.
Validity of NET Scores for PhD Admission
The NET scores obtained by the candidates in categories 2 and 3 mentioned above will be valid for a period of one year.

How to Fill UGC NET Application Form 2024?
The candidates who fulfil the UGC NET eligibility criteria must fill out the UGC NET application form through the NTA website. Given below are the steps to fill UGC NET Application Form June 2024:
- Visit the website of NTA- ugcnet.nta.nic.in
- Click on the ‘Application form’ link mentioned on the bottom of the home page
- Click on ‘New Registration’ to apply for UGC NET for the first time.
- Enter the required details and complete the registration
- Fill out the complete application form by entering other necessary details.
- Upload scanned pictures of passport size photo (10-200 kb) and signature (4-30 kb) in JPEG format
- Pay the UGC NET application fee as per your category.
- Save and submit the form and do not forget to download the confirmation page.
UGC NET 2024 Application Fee
All the candidates who apply for UGC NET 2024 exam must pay the application fee as per their categories. The application fee is non-refundable and must be paid through either online or offline mode. The category-wise fee for the UGC NET exam is as follows:
- General/Unreserved: Rs. 1150/-
- OBC-NCL: Rs. 600/-
- SC/ST/PwD/Transgender: Rs. 325/-
UGC NET 2024 Eligibility
Only those candidates can apply for UGC NET 2024 exam who fulfil the UGC NET eligibility criteria. UGC NET 2024 Admit Card
NTA issues UGC NET 2024 Admit Card to the candidates subject to the fulfilment of the eligibility conditions. Candidates must visit the official website of NTA UGC NET, i.e., ugcnet.nta.nic.in and click on the link ‘Download Admit Card’. Candidates need to bring the Admit Card along with a passport-size photograph affixed to it and one more passport size photograph to be affixed on the attendance sheet. So candidates are advised to keep the print copy of their admit cards in good condition and follow the instructions mentioned on the admit card before the day of the examination.
UGC NET 2024 Answer Key
NTA shall release the final UGC NET answer key 2024 on its website a few days after it has completed conducting the exam. Initially, a provisional answer key will be released where a candidate could raise an objection against the answer key to enable transparency in the examination system. In addition, the UGC NET answer key allows you to calculate your marks in the exam.
NTA UGC NET 2024 Result
After the completion of the UGC NET exam, the result of the UGC NET exam shall be released on the UGC NET website. Candidates who appear for the exam will be able to check their UGC NET result 2024 by logging in with the login credentials. The result will be displayed if they have qualified the exam or not.
