Job Profile of Auditor in CAG, CGDA and CGA

As the name suggests, you need to keep a tab on the expenses incurred by the department you are going to audit. You are expected to be the supervisor of government expenses so that they are spent with the best interests of the general public in mind. You need to perform the following duties:

  • Keeping a tab on expenses: This is the first thing that you need to do as an auditor in any job or any department of government, for that matter. Your job is to check whether the money spent in various programmes of the government is spent judiciously or else, you may raise a query regarding the same as we have seen in case of 2G spectrum allocations or coal block allocations
  • Ensuring judicious spending: Auditors are entrusted with the unenviable task of ensuring that all the government departments and other government bodies are working in the best interests of the public in general. These auditors go for audit in various organizations and ensure that the taxpayers’ money is accounted for properly
  • Issuing guidelines to various departments: This will not be done by an auditor only but you will be responsible to issue specific guidelines to the government departments so that they may follow them properly and can spend properly
  • Initiating public debate: This has been observed during the case of 2G spectrum that has seen the downfall of powerful politicians as well. Yes, as an auditor, you have the power to bring to light the wrongdoings of others and if your seniors deem it fit, they may go ahead with that recommendation of yours

Auditor: Promotional Aspects

Once you are recruited as an auditor, you have to clear the confirmation examination in order to get confirmed in the service but this is basically an open book exam and you have to pass it in 6 attempts. However, in case you fail to qualify in it, it is possible that you are demoted to the grade of a lower division clerk in the department though that does not happen at all

After confirmation, you are eligible for promotion to the cadre of senior auditor after at least 3 years of service and after that you will be promoted to the rank of supervisor after another 10 years of service. However, if you clear the departmental SAS examination (a multiple choice examination), you will be promoted to the gazetted rank of Assistant Audit Officer at the completion of 2 years of service in the department. After that, the hierarchy is as follows:

AAO ——> AO (Audit Officer) ——> Sr AO (Senior Accounts Officer) ——-> Deputy Director / Deputy AG  —— > Director / AG ——–> Principal Director / Pr. AG ———-> Director General

Generally, it takes 7 to 14 years for an AO to become Sr AO and after that similar time frame for the other posts from thereon

Auditor is a good beginning for a young graduate because with every departmental examination, he or she can rise up to the level of Principal Director in the department till the time of retirement. The workload is comparatively less in this job whereas you will be accorded VIP status because of your rank as an auditor in various departments you go. SSC CGL is going on and you have to give your best to land a job through the examination
