Tone controls for a variety of applications

Separate high- and low-pass filters on the front and rear channels let you optimize the signal for maximum performance without distortion. On the sub channel, a low-pass filter also lets you optimize the signal for your sub and enclosure. Subwoofer controls include a variable bass boost, variable subsonic filter, and adjustable phase control that'll dial in and focus the bass in your vehicle. Focal includes a wired remote so you can adjust the bass level from your front seat.

Product Research

Features

Overview: The FPX 5.1200 5-channel amplifier is effectively three amps built into one chassis, two full range 2-channel amps labeled CH1/CH2 and CH3/CH4 (typically used to power front and Rear speakers), and a mono subwoofer amp (inputs labeled CH5 and CH6). Each pair of full range channels is bridgeable, so the amp can be wired as 5-channel, 4-channel, or 3-channel.

CTA-2006 Compliant: CTA-2006 is a system of testing and measurement for mobile audio amplifiers. This voluntary standard advocates a uniform method for measuring an amplifier's RMS power output and signal-to-noise ratio. The criteria for measuring amplifier power uses a DC input voltage of 14.4 volts and the RMS power output is measured over a frequency range of 20 Hz to 20 kHz (for full range amplifiers), with 1% or less Total Harmonic Distortion plus noise (THD+N). Signal-to-Noise ratio is measured in weighted absolute decibels (dBA) at a reference of 1 watt into 4Ω. CTA-2006 standards allow consumers to compare car amplifiers and receivers under the same conditions (apples to apples).

CTA-2006 Specifications:

  • Power Output:
    • Full Range Channels: 75 watts RMS x 4 into 4Ω
    • Subwoofer Channel: 420 watts RMS x 1 into 4Ω
  • Signal to Noise Ratio: 760 dBA (measured at 1 watt into 4Ω)

Other Specifications:

  • Power Output:
    • Full Range Channels:
      • 2Ω: 120 watts RMS x 4
      • Bridged (4Ω): 240 watts RMS x 2
    • Subwoofer Channel:
      • 2Ω: 720 watts RMS x 1
  • Frequency Response: 10 Hz - 20 kHz
  • Minimum Total Harmonic Distortion: 0.03%
  • Crosstalk (1 kHz): >65dB
  • Standby Current: 1.75A
  • Weight: 9.03 pounds

Protection Circuits: The amplifier is equipped with protection circuits for the following: short circuits, low impedance, voltage drop, overheating, reversed polarity, and DC offset.

Remote Control: The included wired remote lets you control the subwoofer channel level relative to the rest of the system from the driver's seat. The small control module can be mounted on a console or under the dash with the supplied screws.

Remote Dimensions:

  • Width: 1.⅝" (2⅝" including mounting flange)
  • Height: ¾"
  • Depth: 1⅜" (2" including knob and wire)

Controls:

  • Mode: input mode; 3-position switch; choose 2-channel (a single pair of stereo inputs sends the signal to all five amplifier channels), 4-channel (dedicated front and rear inputs, the subwoofer channel is fed by the channel 3/4 inputs), or 6-channel (dedicated front, rear, and sub inputs)
  • Gain: independent rotary gain controls for the front, rear, and Sub channels; variable from 200mV to 5V
  • Crossovers: separate crossover controls for the front, rear, and sub channels
    • Front and Rear: the front and rear crossover controls are identical
      • X-Over: 3-position switch; low pass, full range, or high pass
      • Frequency: rotary control; variable from 50 Hz to 500 Hz; 12 dB/octave slope
    • Sub:
      • LPF: rotary frequency control; variable from 50 Hz to 250 Hz; 24 dB/octave slope; the low pass filter is always engaged (it cannot be bypassed)
      • Sub Sonic: rotary frequency control; variable from 20 Hz to 50 Hz; 12 dB/octave slope; used to remove extremely low frequencies that can't be cleanly reproduced by the subwoofer
  • Phase: rotary dial; variable from 0° to 180°
  • Bass Boost: increase the subwoofer channel bass level between 0dB and +12dB via the rotary control; centered at 45 Hz

Connections:

  • Power/Ground: set screw terminals; will accept bare wire up to 4-gauge; screws tightened/loosened with the included 4mm Allen wrench
  • Remote Turn-on: set screw terminal; will accept bare wire up to 10-gauge; screws tightened/loosened with the included 2mm Allen wrench
  • Speaker Output: five pair of set screw terminals; will accept bare wire up to 10-gauge; screws tightened/loosened with the included 2mm Allen wrench
  • Signal Input: 3 pair of RCA inputs; channels 1/2 (front), channels 3/4 (rear), and channels 5/6 (sub)
  • Remote: RJ-14 modular phone jack
  • Fuses: The amp comes with six 30-amp ATM (mini-blade) fuses; three are installed internally, and the others are replacements. The bottom panel is removed to replace the fuses. A 90-amp fuse (minimum) should be installed on the power wire within 18" of the battery.

Q
Regarding sound..although it's a D class amp, can you consider that this amplifier provides a warm sound for highs and mids?
jose antonio  Jul 09, 2022
1 answer
A
The Focal amplifier would give you a warmer tone to your mids and highs despite being a class D amplifier. This would be an excellent option to bring out the vibrancy of your speakers without accentuating a tinny sound.

Q
Can you bypass the x-over on the sub output?

A
I mean, anything is possible with the right parts and patience. I must ask though, why? What is the end game?
michael  Dec 18, 2021
A
No. Channels 5 and 6 will not do full range. With it wide open you will get 250hz and below.

Q
I want to run 4 x focal 80w rms speakers and 2x focal 250w rms subs? Is this possible? I.e Q.can channel 5 run at 2ohms whilst ch 1 - 4 run at 4ohms? Or does the amp have to have a universal ohmâ??ge for all channels? Regards
vichingo  Aug 14, 2021
1 answer
A
The amp can run different ohm loads on each channel and definitely can be ran with a 4 ohm speaker on each speaker channel and then a 2 ohm load on its sub channel. We recommend matching subs with a top RMS that big enough that the amps output is either equal to it for slightly lower. We recommend finding subs that can each handle at least 360 watts RMS and combine to make a 2 ohm load and have advisors that can be reached by calling 1-800-324-9695 to get a personal recommendation on subs to use with it

Q
is it ok to run the four channels at 4ohm and the sub channel at 2ohm. if I run a pair of seperates on each channel (one speaker and one tweeter) will that make it a 2ohm load?
william  Aug 09, 2019
1 answer
A
It is ok to run 4 ohms one some channels and 2 ohms on others like you want do with the sub channel. If you connect a coaxial speaker and a tweeter to one channel in parallel and they are both 4 ohms, then they will make for a 2 ohm load to the amp. However, if you install a component speaker's woofer and tweeter to the same channel, then it will present the ohm listed in the speaker specs (typically 4 ohms).
