Hey Guys - This one has been a challenging one for me as I really have no clue where to look. It's about 10.5mm and appears to be an AE4 from the 5th century (?). There appears to be a big epsilon and a "+" or a cross to the right. I'm stuck with where to look. Thanks for the help!
Am I seeing DN IVS on the obverse? Looks like this to me: Justinian I, Pentanummium, 527-568 AD, Constantinople. 17-21 mm. DN IVSTINIANVS PP AVG, pearl diademed, draped, cuirassed bust right / large epsilon, cross to right. SB 170A, MIB 103A. Though I'm not sure why the wildwinds example doesn't have a cross on the reverse...
No. That would not make sense. Your coin is 100% byzantine in the 500s. Also your coin is either Justin I, Justinian I or Justin II giving the letters of "DN IVS....". As already mentioned your coin is a Pentanummium, meaning 5 nummi. That symbol of "E" is not a monogram, but the denomination of 5 nummi. There were 4 usual denominations in Byzantine Empire in the 500s: M= 40 nummi K= 20 nummi I= 10 nummi E= 5 nummi Then there were also 12 nummi, 4 nummi, 16 or 18 nummi, but that was in another context.
