Mario Kart 8 is set for additional crazy action on the Wii U.
Nintendo is intending to take full advantage of a game that has proven to rejuvenate sales of its flagship console by adding as much support and content as it can muster.
Two download packs, to be released by November this year and May 2015 respectively, are now available for pre-purchase at $A10 and $NZ14 each (or $16A/$NZ20 for both).
They deliver an array of new content, including first-time crossover characters like Link from The Legend of Zelda series and both Isabelle and the Villager from the Animal Crossing series.
In addition to these two new add-on content packs, Mario Kart 8 fans can add three real-world Mercedes-Benz cars to their garage for free.
The modern Mercedes-Benz GLA, the 300 SL Roadster from the 1950s and the legendary Silver Arrow of the 1930s all enter the game and, surprisingly, don’t look too out of place in the crazy cartoon-style world of Mario Kart.
We don’t expect real-world physics for the cars -- instead dive that Silver Arrow onto the ceiling. The Merc update is available now.
As well as game updates, mariokart.tv, the Mario Kart TV web service optimised for smart devices, has also been updated to give users more in-depth game data while on the go, including the ability to check at any given time whether friends are playing Mario Kart 8 online.
Each AOC pack will contain two new cups, each with four courses, which in total increases the number of available courses by 50 per cent.
The AOC packs include classics like Wario’s Gold Mine from Mario Kart Wii, as well as new courses -- some taking place in the worlds of The Legend of Zelda and Animal Crossing.
New vehicles will also arrive with each pack, including the Blue Falcon kart representing the F-Zero franchise in the first AOC pack.
Mario Kart 8 owners who purchase both packs will get access to eight new colours of Yoshi and eight new colours of Shy Guy to race with immediately.
To purchase the packs prior to release, users with a broadband Internet connection can click the new ‘Shop’ icon in the game or visit the Nintendo eShop on Wii U.
