The 2023 Midsumma Festival broke records
in almost every department: we had the
largest ever attendance at Midsumma
Carnival; record numbers of participants
at Midsumma Pride March, in terms of
numbers of groups marching, numbers
of people marching overall, and those
watching the parade as it purposefully and
joyously wandered down Fitzroy Street
St Kilda, culminating in a hugely successful
concert in Catani Gardens. In addition, more
tickets to shows and exhibitions were sold
than in any previous year, with many artists
and producers enjoying sellout seasons.
Midsumma’s own signature program for
the festival, A Safe(R) Space, was hugely
successful, with artists from all branches
of the arts writing, performing, curating
and producing works delivered to highly
appreciative audiences, some performances
receiving 5 star reviews in mainstream city
media.
