NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – The newest member of the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Department, a K9, was awarded a shield on Thursday after locating a missing teen just a week after completing training.
Sheriff Erroll Toulon held a ceremony at the Yaphank Correctional Facility on Long Island for Hondo, a 1-year-old German Shepherd, where he presented Honda his official shield.
“One of the things that we always look for to make sure that the canine is obedient, they can follow orders and you know, more, they're going to obey the orders of their handlers. So Hondo clearly displayed all of that.”
After completing his 8-month training, Hondo was able to assist in tracking down a missing teenager in Riverhead.
Hondo is trained in detecting drugs, patrolling and searching buildings and locating missing people.
