Synology has launched a new network-attached storage (NAS) device. The Synology DiskStation DS1621xs+ features a compact “tower form-factor” and comes with a high-end 6-bay configuration. Complete with a quad-core Xeon processor, user-upgradeable ECC memory (Error-correcting code), and onboard 10-gigabit Ethernet (10GbE), the new Synology NAS “raises the bar for high-performance data storage and management.”

The DS1621xs+ is the fourth NAS solution Synology has launched this year. With people around the world forced to work from home because of the COVID-19 pandemic, demand for NAS devices is apparently high.

The Taiwanese company started with the DS220J in March and followed it with the DS220+ in June. These two are essentially entry-level solutions, costing $170 and $300 respectively. Synology last month launched the DS1520+, which is a 5-bay solution priced at $700. The company is now following it with an even powerful 6-bay DS1621xs+.

As you’d expect, it is the costliest of the lot as well. The Synology DS1621xs+ NAS is now available from the company’s resellers and partners at an MSRP of $1599.99. B&H Photo is already selling a diskless unit with delivery expected within two weeks.

Synology DS1621xs+ specs and features

The Synology DS1621xs+ boasts 3.1Gbps read and 1.8 Gbps write speeds, making it ideal for large data sets from multiple users. It features six 3.5-inch hard drive bays totaling to 96 terabytes of raw storage capacity. Users can further expand the storage capacity up to 256 terabytes by adding two DX517 expansion units for a total of 16 bays.

A pair of M.2 solid-state drive slots are also there, enabling “blazing-fast” NVMe (Non-Volatile Memory Express) cache. Synology claims up to 20X faster read/write speeds without sacrificing any bays.

In addition to dual Gigabit Ethernet slots, the Synology DS1621xs+ NAS also offers a built-in 10-gigabit Ethernet connection. This enables faster data transfer rates so users can complete content-creation projects or big backup tasks swiftly. Synology also promises faster transfer performance for multiple virtual machines.

The whole package is powered by the Intel Xeon D-1527 2.2 GHz octa-core processor with 8GB of DDR4 RAM. Users can further top the memory up to 32GB. Last but not least, you’re also getting three USB 3 Type-A ports, in case you need external expansion.

Upgradable ECC memory will ensure the maximum dependability of your stored data. You can combine it with Btrfs (b-tree file system) or other backup options so you’re always confident about your data. And with the convenience and ease of cloud services, you can access your stored data through a web browser or mobile app. Synology also offers file streaming functionality for computers.
