5.0 out of 5 stars Fast reliable and big HDD

I couldn't believe I could upgrade to 14 TB for only $400. I bought 3 - one WD140EFGX and two WD141EFGX. The Amazon descriptions and Western Digital part numbers don't match.

I may never need this much space but who knows? I run a Plex server and it grows exponentially. I also backup the main data drive so at least two x 14 TB are needed.

Watch the drive letters - the WD140EFGX is 5,400 RPM and the WD141EFGX is 7,200 RPM with slightly different data transfer rates.

Fortunately, the HD Tune performance tests are close enough that it doesn't matter to me. Using SATA 3 vs SATA 2 ports makes a difference. Both drives peak at 260 MB/s and average 201 MB/s for the test.

I've used WD drives for more than 20 years. I haven't had a drive failure yet. Usually, I run out of space. Not this time.

Some reviews say the Seagate Iron Wolf drives are faster but they are also more expensive.

5.0 out of 5 stars The WD20EFZX worked in my Synology NAS just fine.

I'm writing this review because I couldn't find out if the WD20EFZX could be used in my Synology NAS as a replacement for the EFRX series drives. I couldn't get an answer on the Internet other than 'it should' or 'might' work, so I'm going to answer that question for you. And btw, the WD website doesn't make it any easier with the many different models of the RED series from the original RED to the PLUS to the PRO.

The Amazon page I ordered from didn't specify if it was a WD20EFRX so I can't really hold that against them, although that was what I was hoping for. But I was unable to find a new one when I was searching, other than overpriced ones, (now this week they're everywhere). The spec's listed on the Amazon page were exactly the same as the 2 TB EFRX that I already had installed a few years back, so I thought it should be an EFRX model since the EFRX has a different cache size.

However, what came in was the model WD20EFZX (which has the 128mb cache instead of 64mb so the Amazon page is wrong by listing 64mb). The outside of the box is just a generic WD RED PLUS 2TB with no other specs listed, as shown on the Amazon page. The only information is on the label that;s on the HD itself. My concern was that the EFZX isn't listed in the Synology compatibility list of HDD's for my model Synology NAS (DS413j). But, I decided to take the chance and install it as a test rather than just returning it. The specs are very similar and it's at least CMR and not SMR so no incompatible issues in that respect.

No problems with installation and did the "repair" on the Storage Pool. The NAS did throw a warning that the HDD wasn't in their compatibility list during the repair wizard but gave me the option to continue. Temperatures during the repair process ran at the same temps as the other 3 drives. So, at least for now, the drive seems compatible with the NAS despite not being on the list. At this point, only time will tell.

Nice new 4TB external disk to replace a faulty 10-year old 3TB. I was able to hot-swap it easily in my 4-bay QNAP home server. No issues at all. I always choose the Red Plus given the constant use and the longevity. Arrived promptly via Royal Mail Tracked and well-packaged in a ton of bubble wrap. Exactly what I needed.
