20 July 2011, US Secretary of State Hilary Clinton announced the “New Silk Road Initiative” – a plan to build a sprawling complex of transportation, communications, and energy transmission networks that will interconnect the Eurasian supercontinent via Afghanistan. Michael Skinner examines the decades long processes that led to Canada’s role in building the New Silk Road and analyses the implications of this plan for Canadians and Afghans.

An Anatomical Study on Testicular Descent and Gubernaculum in Human FoetusesDescent of the testis from an intra-abdominal site in foetal life to scrotum is a mandatory developmental process to ensure that the normal spermatogenesis is established. Key anatomical event with regard to this is the thickening of the gubernaculum and regression. The objective of the study is to determine the timeline of descent of the testes vis-a-vis gubernaculum development and regression in human foetuses between 14 to 40 weeks. Materials and methods: The structural changes, the attachment of gubernaculum and testicular descent was observed in 30 aborted human foetuses of different gestational ages. Results: At 14 weeks testes were located at the abdomen near the deep inguinal ring. At 20-24 weeks the location of testis was above the inguinal ring and remained undescended or abdominal. At this stage was the change in the gubernacular structure was the most striking feature. The gubernaculum appeared as thick and bulky with testis adorned as a knob on its summit. Gubernaculum was cranially attachment to the lower pole of testes, epididymis and distally attached to inguinal canal and extended to scrotum, pubic bone and regressed at latter weeks .Testes were observed to migrate through inguinal canal during 26 to 28 weeks. After 32 weeks the testes were in the scrotum and gubernaculum was regressed. Conclusion: The testicular descent commences at 14 weeks. The testes migrate through inguinal canal from 26 to 28 weeks and descend to the scrotum after 32 weeks of gestation. Gubernaculum was seen to undergo noteworthy structural modifications during descent

Condet area located in District Kramat Djati has been declared as areas of cultural heritage since in 1976. In fact, each year in the region has been changing rapidly. Since a typical residential Batavia, loaded with fruit gardens, Condet turns into a dense residential area. This study aims to obtain along with changes in settlement patterns of Betawi Condet and the background’s factor. The research was conducted with descriptive exploratory to increase knowledge about the changes in patterns of settlement people Betawi in Condet and discover the factors influencing these changes. From this research found that homes used to have 1-2 hectares of gardens are now no longer exists. The houses built in recent decades is no longer a traditional Betawi house but modern houses and rented row house row. The factors that are behind them, among others, the factors of urbanization, economy, culture and behavior of those who own Betawi. Keyword: Condet, cultural heritage, residential pattern, Ka...

Bamboo has good prospects for composite raw materials such as for Oriented Strand Board (OSB) product. Previous research has shown that steam and rinsing with water and 1% NaOH solution treatments of strand improved the properties of OSB, which might be caused by changing in the chemical components content of bamboo. This study aimed to determine the chemical components content change of sembilang bamboo (Dendrocalamus giganteus Munro), black bamboo (Gigantochloa nigrocillata Kurz.), and tali bamboo (G. apus (Bl.ex Schult.f.)) due to steam and rinsing treatment. The chemical components of bamboo were analyzed referring to the Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry standards (TAPPI). The results showed that the most significant changes in the chemical components content of bamboo occured for holocellulose, hemicellulose, extractive contents, and pH values. The decreasing of hemicellulose, extractive contents, and increasing pH values due to the steam and 1% NaOH rinsing...
Soil salinity is a major constraint to rice production in coastal areas around the globe, and modern high-yielding rice cultivars are more sensitive to high salt stress, which limits rice productivity. Traditional breeding programs find it challenging to develop stable salt-tolerant rice cultivars with other stress-tolerant for the saline environment in Bangladesh due to large yield variations caused by excessive salinity fluctuations during the dry (boro) season. We examined trait characterization of 18 advanced breeding lines using SNP genotyping and among them, we found line G6 (BR9621-B-1-2-11) (single breeding line with multiple-stress-tolerant QTL/genes) possessed 9 useful QTLs/genes, and two lines (G4:BR9620-2-7-1-1 and G14: IR 103854-8-3-AJY1) carried 7 QTLs/genes that control the desirable traits. To evaluate yield efficiency and stability of 18 rice breeding lines, two years of field experiment data were analyzed using AMMI (additive main effect and multiplicative interact...
