INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State University's student-athletes combined for a 3.2 cumulative grade point average in the spring 2023 semester. Meanwhile, WVSU Athletics' streak of academic success was extended to 10 consecutive semesters with a collective 3.0 GPA or higher.

"Our student-athletes, coaches, faculty and staff have once again proved how dedicated they are to embracing the educational values of the athletics department and the university," said Athletic Director Nate Burton. "We make it a point to emphasize academic success year in and year out. There's nothing I enjoy more than to see those efforts come to fruition at the end of a semester."

West Virginia State's student-athletes raised their combined GPA from a 3.11 in the fall to a 3.2 in the spring. Nearly all of the teams had at least half of their student-athletes achieve 3.0 GPA's or better this semester.

On the women's side, tennis, volleyball and soccer all recorded 3.5 GPA's or higher. The volleyball team had 21-of-22 student-athletes register a 3.0 GPA or better while the women's soccer team led all other sports with nine 4.0 GPA's.

On the men's side, baseball and tennis led the way with a 3.3 and 3.2 GPA respectively. An impressive 73 percent of baseball players achieved a 3.0 GPA or higher while 71 percent of men's tennis players did the same.
