Safety is the priority at SC State Fair

COLUMBIA, SC (WACH) --- We are a day away from the return of the South Carolina State Fair and while the food and fun are on a lot of people's minds so is something else, safety!

South Carolina State Fair officials expect large crowds this year and with it comes more help from Richland County Sheriffs and the South Carolina Highway Patrol. Matt Lashuma with security and parking said safety is a top priority. "We bring a lot of police personnel on to make sure there's a safe environment," Lashuma said.

Upon entrance, Lashuma said every person would be checked and scanned with metal detectors, and no concealed weapons, bags or outside food are allowed. More than 40 acres of land will open for people needing to park. Lashuma said locking your doors, hiding valuables and remaining vigilant will help keep you and your property safe.

Streets will be filled with people, and law enforcement will be in full effect security recommends you bring a little patience with you. Lieutenant Curtis Wilson with the Richland County Sheriff's Departments said they're also adding more feet on the ground. "We'll be inside and also around the perimeter of the State Fair as well,” Wilson said. “You'll see some that will be in uniform, and you'll see some that aren't in uniform."

Wilson also warned parents to keep their eyes on their children. "Just one second is all it takes for somebody to snatch their child and move,” Wilson said. “And with a crowd as big as the state fair has, it's very easy for something to happen."
