Lions Win Extra Inning Battle At Nova Southeastern On Friday Night

Apr 01, 2022

Box Score FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - Saint Leo Softball won a marathon on Friday night, defeating Nova Southeastern, 6-1, in 10 innings to open up their three-game series.

Tied 1-1 going into the 10th inning, Madyson Coe came on and got the rally started with a single to center field. Caroline Barwick came on to pinch run, and she moved over to second on a Hope Epps sac bunt. The Lions then got the winning run over to third when Rachel Bean singled to center and continued the inning. After being tied for five innings, the tie was finally broken when Alexandra Hare reached on an error by Nova Southeastern's shortstop, allowing Barwick to come home and score the eventual game-winning run.

The top of the 10th was not done there, however. Alyssa Perez singled home Bean to give the Lions a 3-1 lead. Isabella Andujar then ran her RBI total to 20 on a two-run single that scored Perez and Hare to make it 5-1 Lions. Saint Leo broke it open to a five run lead on a Emily Pilon RBI single to left scored Alli Jaquith, pinch running for Andujar, making it 6-1 Saint Leo. Pilon now leads the team with 27 RBI's.

Morgan Shannon had the longest outing of her season Friday night, going 9.2 innings, keeping the game tied for the Lions for the majority of the night. She gave up just one run on four hits while striking out a season-high 10 batters at the plate. Despite walking six batters, Shannon was pivotal tonight in helping the Lions win the extra-inning battle at Nova Southeastern.

The win helped snap the Lions' seven-game losing streak, and they also broke the Sharks' six-game winning streak. Saint Leo now moves to 19-11 on the year and 8-8 in the Sunshine State Conference before battling at Nova Southeastern again on Saturday in a doubleheader, with game one starting at 9:30 AM.
