Review: Diatone Mamba F411 Nano 16x16mm FC/ESC Stack

by Oscar

The Diatone Mamba F4 Nano Stack (134) is a 16x16mm flight controller stack that support 2S to 4S LiPo voltage input. Build quality looks awesome!

Closer Look at the Diatone F4 Nano Stack

First off, here are the specs of the flight controller and 4in1 ESC:

  • FC Processor: F411
  • FC Gyro: MPU6000
  • Betaflight OSD
  • 5V 1.5A BEC
  • Input Voltage: 2S – 4S Lipo
  • Betaflight Firmware Target: MAMBAF411
  • ESC Firmwrae: BLHeli_S
  • ESC Current Rating: 12A-13A? Continuous, 15A (10S) Burst
  • ESC Protocols: PWM, Oneshot, Multishot, Dshot600
  • Mounting holes: M2 16x16mm
  • Size: 22×22×5.2mm
  • Weight: 5.5g

This is a two-board stack – F4 FC on top and a 13A 4in1 ESC at the bottom.

Diatone will release a VTX adapter board specifically for the TBS UNIFY PRO32 NANO VTX, which will sit on top of the FC. I’ve asked them to develop a similar board for the more affordable Eachine Nano VTX, hope they will consider it.

This is what the VTX adapter board looks like. The VTX can be soldered directly to the board, which has 16x16mm mounting holes so you can mount it on top of the FC. It doesn’t bring anything special to the table, simply a neat solution for mounting your VTX.

The connections between each board, e.g. the VTX and FC, are through silicone wires. This is in my opinion a better way than using “push pins” like the iFlight Succex F4 Micro stack we only just reviewed.

Yes, soldering wires is more work to set it up the first time, and perhaps harder when repairing, but it minimizes the vibrations that can be transferred from the frame to the gyro. And it’s also more robust against crash impacts.

For soft-mounting, Diatone went for their iconic plastic o-rings paired with M2 steel bolts. We saw the same from their full size and mini size Mamba F7 stacks.

These o-rings works reall well for reducing vibrations getting to the flight controller, and it’s very flexible when it comes to adjusting the space between boards, by simply inserting more or fewer o-rings. The only downside though is when you take the stack apart, it can be quite a mess! And be careful don’t lose them in the carpet or you will never find them again.

The FC and 4in1 ESC are also connected with soldered silicon wires to maximize the effectiveness of soft mounting.

Receiver Setup

Frsky

There are only 2 UART ports, which is limited. But this is kind of normal on 16x16mm stacks. It just means if you are using SBUS and SmartAudio to control your VTX, you won’t have SmartPort Telemetry. The best solution is probably to use FPort so you can get both SBUS and Telemetry through the same wire :)

Alternatively you can also remap the PPM pad to a Softserial Port, and connect SmartPort to it. Here is a tutorial to give you an example how it works.

Simply go to Betaflight CLI and enter:

resource PPM 1 NONE
resource ESCSERIAL 1 NONE
resource SERIAL_TX 11 B09
resource SERIAL_RX 11 B09
save

Setting ESCSERIAL 1 to NONE because it also occupies the pin B09. Setting it to none shouldn’t be an issue.

Other Notes

The Diatone Mamba F4 Nano Stack is a few dollars more expensive than the iFlight Micro stack, and specs are similar, but build quality of the Mamba looks amazing so I’d still consider it. Especially if you have OCD about soft-mounting, the Mamba stack is probably preferable.

Here is the pin-out diagram of the Diatone Mamba F4 Nano FC:

There are buzzer pads, but no RSSI pad. and no flash memory for blackbox.

There is conflicting info on the product page, the specs say ESC rating is 13A but the images says 12A.

Diatone will in the next revision break out both RX2 and TX2 pads on the board, giving you access to the full UART2 without resource remapping.

Hi Oscar how do I connect an ELRS rx to the Mamba f4 nano v.1.2. Help !

Do you have a spare full UART on your FC? if so just connect it. If not then you are out of luck.

Hi Oscar,

I have a 2019 Diatone F411 nano stack that I want to connect to my ELRS RX.

Can you help me configure the RX & TX UARTs?

It has sbus and ppm connections. Is there a way to configure them to RX and TX ports? If so what are the commands?

Thanks! Doug

Oscar 8th February 2022 - 4:30 pm

No, you have to use a spare UART (TX and RX). You can’t remap these pins.

What should rxserial_halfduplex / _inverted be set to, to have the remapped ppm to seftserial tx for Fport to be accepted by board.

I am thru with this shitty thing.
I have v1.2 and there’s no way to get both UARTs working. UART1 ist just fine with CRSF *OR* GPS.
UART2_TX is also working fine, as I can see CRSF telemetry on the Tango2 (GPS Sat Count, e.g.).
There is NO WAY to get UART2_RX to function. Not with simple remapping, not with complete SoftSerial. Not with the small soldering pin at the backside of the FC (which SHOULD BE RX2, as of the Diatone Support)…

Any more suggestions?

Anyone who wants to get a Full UART with TX and RX (For DJI Airunit for ex.) can also do:
resource PPM 1 NONE
resource ESCSERIAL 1 NONE
resource SERIAL_TX 2 NONE
resource SERIAL_TX 11 A02
resource SERIAL_RX 11 B09
save

The TX2 Pad is then the Softserial TX
The PPM Pad is then the Softserial RX

Just remapping RX2 to the ppm Pad doesnt work for me on the V1.3 Board.

I believe u could use oscar’s provided soft serial remap of the ppm pad to run fport should you know how to grab a non inverted fport signal off your receiver.

Hello Oscar, great review of this FC..!
I just bought one and only figured out after the purchase that I might be in trouble connecting a FlySky RX (Fli14+ ==> Ibus !!) as the only RX pad is Sbus (thus inverted…!)
How could I connect my RX on this board ?
Sbus pad ? Anything to do in the CLI ?
Thanks in advance for you help ! ;-)

SBUS might have automatic inversion, so give that a try anway.
Depends on which version of the FC you have, new version has RX pads now.

I have version 1.2 of this stack. I have a Spektrum 4650 that is capable of a wide voltage input. I have tried 3.3v and 5v, tx1, and sbus lads for the signal. I cannot get the receiver to power on or bind for that matter. Any suggestions?

Prefer the push pins on such small stacks. Just look at the amount of wiring and weight added because of it. The cleaner such small stacks are the better. Also I don’t see a method for using F.Port making the iFlight and GepRC mini stacks the better choice imho.

can you send a picture of crossfire nano connected to mamba board and the betaflight uarts that it should be

Hello all

I had Diatone by teamviewer … It appears they sent a V1.2 with V1.0 diagram. That’s why it’s a mess.

Please check the wiring of previous or next version if it’s not working.
If the SBUS pad is not on a corner it’s the third pad since the SBUS corner. I have the diagram on my computer but impossible to load it here. If you need it please MP me on facebook Thomas Prdns.

Good luck all

Hello

I have a V1.0.

Impossible to make move in receiver tab with CRSF and also with XM+. The binds are ok on both (got telemetry back in taranis and solid green led on XM+).

Tried all port, all remaping. Contacted The support but after sent me the same command and wiring diagram from here (i guess) they do not answer me anymore…

So back for a premium stack …

Hello i have got the 1.2 version. I connected my tbs nano pro crsf. Same way like in you diagramm. I can bind it with my taranis, but it seems like the fc cant find the receaver. No signals. Do i need to remap the pins in the 1.2 version?

Best to check with Diatone support, I am not sure what they changed in the V1.2 as i don’t have one. But they told me it’s supposed to be easier to use with Crossfire.

i just found out that on my f411 (v1.0) the diagramm in the diatone help section is wrong.

on my board the 3,3 volt pad is the sbus pad.

where can i refund three days of trying with the wrong pad?

Hi Oscar

My XM+ is not recognized from FC… already binded to my taranis and my port is opened.
i solder the sbus from RX to SBUS pad to the Mamba.
Any suggestion ?

Oscar 1st December 2019 - 4:06 pm

Try soldering the RX to a different FC and see if that works?

To setup Crossfire Nano receiver:

resource PPM 1 none
resource ESCSERIAL 1 none
resource SERIAL_TX 1 none

then

resource SERIAL_TX 1 B09

and it works.

@Brandon D Huggett did you find out your answers? I’m about to do the same and I might be using your mappings for the TBS crossfire nano RX.

I have the v1.1 board.

Yes Oscar YOURS IS OLDER! You have V1.0 here….NO CURRENT SENSOR….Mine has one BUT STILL DO NOT HAVE A CLUE IF I HAVE v1.1 or v1.2!!? WHY WOULD THEY DO SUCH???!! wow….

Reply
Brad Turbo Ivie 8th September 2019 - 5:31 am

Hello Oscar! Hey…..I see there are three variations of this lil nano stack. I DO KNOW I DO NOT HAVE ONE YOU HAVE HERE. For mine DOES have a current sensor it seems, where there is NOTHING on there on the one pictured here in this review?? It is at the back right far side next to the tiny black ?transistor? There is one tiny copper pad at that corner on mine and does say CURR on it. THING IS!! Diatone says NOTHING about HOW to tell which version you have just that there are three and you need to find out which you have…..NICE EH??? So I guess I have either the V1.1 OR V1.2…BUT HAVE NO FREAKIN’ IDEA HOW TO FIND OUT??!! I cannot find ONE Thing on “HOW” to tell or “WHERE” it may say such…EVEN ON THEIR WEBSITE…JUST SAYS THERE ARE THREE// WHY??? WHY WOULD YOU NOT SOMEHOW LABEL SUCH IMPORTANCE??? NUTZzz!!! If you have any idea or how I’m to find out DO TELL??!! hahaha thx! L8r-Brad Turbo Ivie.

Yes I am really curious to know if crossfire can work with this board considering getting a diatone gtb and I want to use crossfire so would be great to know

Reply
Oscar 10th September 2019 - 6:26 pm

Apparently they’ve changed the board again and mine is an outdated board. Best to check with Diatone.

Just a note to your

“Update (16/Aug): apparently, you can connect Crossfire directly to the SBUS pin (RX1) and you can remap PPM to TX1, saving UART2 for something else. I was told inversion on this board is automatic.”

I’ve tried this, although aside from RSSI I can’t get Telemetry to work i.e. I can’t use BF Lua Scripts on my taranis

Its under the “Development” branch as MAMBAF411.

I have this board and was wondering about the uarts… couldn’t decide if i needed to use soft serial or not. this is my first build and has been a challenge but i think it will be worth it. If someone could look at my config id appreciate it. i think its correct especially after this update but just in case…. imgur.com/a/6yvXWTw

Hi Oscar – great review as always! I have one of these boards and it has pins connecting the ESCs to the FC. I’m not sure if it’s newer or older than yours but it’s definitely different!
