Men's and Women's Cross Country Debut in 2010

Women's Cross Country finishes third, while the men finish sixth

. – The Nova Southeastern University men’s and women’s cross country teams opened the 2010 season at the King of the Hill Challenge in Davie on Sunday morning. The women finished third out of six teams, while the men finished sixth in the 5K event.

A pair of freshman led the way for the Sharks’ women’s team finishing in the top-10 in the midst of a NCAA Division I field. Alexandra Palm (Fr., Winnebago, Ill.) held her own finishing second out of 45 with a time of 20:00. Just 0:52 seconds back, Peri Bowman (Fr., Virginia Beach, Va.) rolled in at seventh to lead the women’s team to a third place finish.

Brittany Smash (Fr., Arlington, Texas) finished 25th with a time of 23:03, Ulatha Conga (So., West Palm Beach, Fla.) finished 32nd with a time of 24:07, while Jessica Olsteen (Las Vegas, Nev.) and Brandi Nichols (Fr., Inverness, Fla.) finished 36th and 44th respectively for the Sharks.

Miami’s Brook Dovell turned in the best time of the day at 19:19 to take first place at the 2010 season opening 5K run.

On the men’s side, the Sharks were not as fortunate finishing in sixth place out of six teams. However, it was veteran runner Agustine Rey (Sr., Coral Springs, Fla.) that led the way for NSU finishing in eighth-place with a time of 16:57.

Sophomore Kevin Meagher (Mansfield, Mass.) followed in 25th place with a time of 17:43, while John Besharat (Sr., Miami, Fla.) finished in 35th place with a time of 18:08. Nico Crecco (So., Mendon, N.Y.) finished 45th at 19:14 and Chris Jacob (Sr., Naples, Fla.) finished with a time of 19:50 for a 48th-place finish. Joseph Pena (Jr., Jacksonville, Fla.) and Ivan Almanza (So., Hollywood, Fla.) rounded out the Shark runners in 49th and 52nd respectively.

Both teams will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 11, 2010 at Florida Tech with the run beginning at 7:30 am.
