EVEN the tense excitement of the week just passed did not prevent an interest in the theater in a manner of the crescendo, as compared with the early October situa tion.. The lighter demonstra tions have been the more pros perous, the creations of magnifi cent intent having dwindled and finally left the field of strongest appreciation at the disposal of weird melodrama like “Dracula or roaring farce like “Abie s Irish Rose.” .“Jealous Moon” and King dom of God” presented two play ers, Miss Barrymore and Miss Cowl, whom the theater s public has learned to esteem almost to the degree of idolatry, in roles which the Washington public, struggle, as it might to maintain the obstinate influence of heroine worship, could not find artistically worthy. ** * * It* remains for Irish Rose to represent hot a queen of the frarden, as its title would seem ta mply, but-a stout, uncompromis ing weed originally undesired by experts in Broadway horticulture, but flourishing nevertheless into 'Xa.mi J and RICUARD AdIENJ |_VN * yVAetropolHhari/y A Q D WGr -\ J jpo' |\]a+i'ona I Jfl enterprise pursues a plan that has worked out successfully in many instances, that of taking a moderately successful comedy and embellishing it with music and dancing; thereby taking the bene fit of a neat and consistent plot along with the vaudeville hilarity. ** * * Pauline Frederick, now appear ing under the auspices of the ex perienced Lew Wiswell, so long in close association with Henry W. Savage, has attained the distinc tion of that double identity which calls for the word (herself) to show when she is appearing as one of the speaking successes and not as an idol of the screen. A capital comedy with clever situa tions, good lines and precisely the proper players to interpret them got off to a rather bad start in the matter of selecting a title. Yet that is what Richard Talmadge. dare-devil of the screen, actually did before he even gained a toe-hold on the ladder leading to stardom. After the opening of “The Cavalier” in New York recently, the newspaper critics compared Talmadge to Douglas Fairbanks. Tom Mix, Hoot Gibson and Will Rogers—one writer even stating that he was a combination of all, and "the best dare-devil stunt man” on the screen. It is said that in the career of Doug las Fairbanks, his understudy and double for the more perilous stunts w r as this same Talmadge. In fact Fairbanks gave Talmadge due credit later for attract ing attention to his athletic prowess when, owing to the risk of holding up the picture through some injury, he was unable to take chances in the more sen sational stunts. Talmadge was working as an extra at the Pickford-Fairbanks studio when Doug was being prompted in an extreme ly dangerous feat.
