“Achieving Excellence for ALL – Juntos Alcanzando Excelencia”

Hello Families!

This quarter, our focus is on the character traits of problem-solving and initiative. Last week, we had our Wildcat Expectations Assembly to review expectations and upcoming events.

Please encourage your children to be positive, respectful friends, and ensure they follow the dress code. If they bring cell phones, a signed waiver is required, and all toys should stay at home.

Good attendance is crucial for success. Thank you for making it a priority to bring your child to school every day and on time.

We appreciate your partnership and your support. Let’s make this last quarter great!

Best regards, Mrs. Watson

Partial Solar Eclipse Information

As you may be aware, on Monday, April 8, 2024, an extraordinary celestial event will occur in North America as a solar eclipse will cast its shadow across the continent. While San Diego County will experience a partial eclipse rather than a total one, the event is nonetheless significant. The San Diego region is expected to witness a partial eclipse that will begin around 10 a.m., peak at 11:11 a.m., and end at 12:23 p.m.

To ensure the safety and well-being of all our students and staff during this event, the Chula Vista Elementary School District (CVESD) has implemented a rainy day schedule for all schools on April 8. This means that recess and lunch activities will be conducted indoors. Parental permission is required for classrooms intending to incorporate eclipse viewing into their curriculum, and adherence to NASA’s safety standards regarding appropriate viewing gear is mandatory.

If you have any additional questions, please let us know. You can also learn more about what CVESD is doing and safety tips by visiting cvesd.org.

Loma Verde Counselor Recognized

Loma Verde Counselor Recognized

Congratulations to School Counselor Diego Arias, from Loma Verde Elementary School, for receiving the San Diego County Counselor of the Year Award by the San Diego County Office of Education.

Mr. Arias was selected for this esteemed award for his exceptional leadership and unwavering dedication to empowering students to build resiliency, encouraging them to utilize healthy coping skills, and helping his students flourish.

With over 11 years of experience as a school counselor, Mr. Arias has positively impacted countless students’ lives. He strongly believes that wellness involves holistic aspects of a child, not only one learning modality. His commitment to ensuring that his students have access to a quality life, wellness, and education is evident/shines through in his everyday work.

“School counselors play a vital role in ensuring the well-being of our students,” said Superintendent Eduardo Reyes, Ed.D. “Supporting our students’ social and emotional well-being is a top priority for our district, and our school counselors play a significant role in shaping the well-rounded development of our students. Congratulations to Mr. Arias on this recognition.”

Mr. Arias will be honored and recognized during an in-person event hosted by the San Diego County Office of Education.

Character Trait Focus of the Month – Teamwork

Explaining the character trait focus of the month “teamwork” is essential for reinforcing positive behaviors and values at school and home. Here’s how you can explain the character trait focus of teamwork and provide three tips or activities to teach at home:

  1. Explanation of Teamwork: Begin by defining teamwork to your child in simple terms. Explain that teamwork means working together with others to achieve a common goal or task. Emphasize the importance of cooperation, communication, and support within a team.
  2. Tips or Activities:
    • Family Chores: Assign age-appropriate chores to each family member and emphasize the importance of working together to complete them. Encourage your child to take on responsibilities and contribute to the household tasks. Rotate roles to ensure fairness and cooperation.
    • Team Building Games: Engage in fun and interactive team-building activities or games as a family. This could include building a puzzle together, playing team sports in the backyard, or participating in cooperative board games that require teamwork to win.
    • Story Time: Read books or watch movies together that highlight the value of teamwork. Discuss the characters’ actions and how they work together to overcome challenges or achieve their goals. Encourage your child to identify examples of teamwork in their own life or experiences.
  3. Reflect and Reinforce: After completing each activity or discussion, take time to reflect with your child on the importance of teamwork and how it positively impacts both personal and collective achievements. Praise your child for demonstrating teamwork skills and encourage them to continue practicing these behaviors in various aspects of their life.

By explaining the concept of teamwork and providing practical tips or activities, you can effectively reinforce this character trait at home, fostering a sense of collaboration, empathy, and mutual respect. Thank you for your support!

  • Kindergartners who will be 5 years old on or before September 1, 2024.
  • NEW students in grades 1st through 6th
  • All registrations will take place online. There will be no paper packets. To register please visit our district website beginning on February 14: www.cvesd.org

  • Please note:
    • TK students will not need a renewal zone transfer link as they will need to register at their neighborhood school for Kindergarten. Our district’s Early Childhood Education department supports Preschool and TK enrollment. Please contact them directly at (619) 425-9600 Ext.181725.
    • The Renewal Zone Transfer Form is independent of the “New Zone Transfer Form.”
    • Students who will be transitioning to Sweetwater Union High School District for seventh grade (middle school) do not need to notify CVESD about this, but will need to complete registration processes with that district via https://www.sweetwaterschools.org/.

Loma Verde Elementary offers both the Dual Immersion (English & Spanish 50/50) program and English-only classes in Transitional Kindergarten through 6th grade. Call 619-420-3940 for more information or click here to register.

ATTENDANCE MATTERS!

Did you know that if your child is out of school for three or more days, you can request an independent study contract? If an independent study contract is completed, your child receives attendance credit. For more information, you can contact Maggie Rivera (619-420-3940)

Students need to be at school every day and on time. Please make sure your child is here by 7:55 a.m. and lined up on the blacktop (1st-6th grade) or by the classroom (TK-kinder). Let’s continue to improve our attendance! If your child must be out sick, please contact the office at 619-420-3940 or lomaverdeschool@cvesd.org to excuse the absence. Remember to bring a doctor’s note. Vacations, dentist, and doctor visits should be scheduled during our breaks whenever possible. If your child misses school, they are missing out on important learning! Our school staff will be meeting with parents/guardians, calling home, and doing home visits for students who are chronically absent.

Week #29 TK-6th grade attendance average: 91.8% (Goal is 98% or higher)
Yearly to date (7/19/23-3/15/24) average attendance: 94.9% (Goal is 98%)

Please visit this page for helpful resources on improving your child’s attendance: https://www.cvesd.org/parents/attendance-information.

  • LET’S CONTINUE TO IMPROVE OUR ATTENDANCE AT LOMA VERDE!
  • Students should only miss school if they are sick. Those with symptoms can return with a negative Covid test, no fever for 24 hours without fever-reducing medication, and symptoms improving. STUDENTS DO NOT NEED TO BE SYMPTOM-FREE to attend school. We have plenty of rapid tests at school–just ask in the office. If you have a special circumstance and need an independent study, please let us know.
  • We begin a secure campus at 8:00 a.m. Parents/guardians must exit promptly at 8:00. Thank you.
  • Students can arrive as early as 7:15 a.m.
  • FREE breakfast is served from 7:15 a.m. to 7:50 a.m.
  • Absences that are not reported will be considered UNEXCUSED. After 3 unexcused absences and/or tardies you will receive a truancy letter.
  • If you pick up your child/children early and/or they are tardy for personal reasons this is considered unexcused.
  • Thank you for helping to get your child to school every day and one time!

REMINDERS

  • EVERY MINUTE COUNTS! School starts at 8:00 a.m. Students need to be on the blacktop at this time and teachers will walk them to class. We ask all parents to exit promptly by 8:00 a.m. so that we can lock the gate after the bell.
  • To limit interruptions during instructional time in class, the only items being accepted at the front office will be items that are medically necessary for your child’s education (i.e. glasses, hearing aids, etc.). Lunches, water bottles, library books, and homework will no longer be accepted. We appreciate your understanding of our new policy. Thank you!
  • Please send a water bottle with your child. Water bottles can be filled at the classroom sink or outside drinking fountains.
