Coldwell Banker’s donation was achieved by the fundraising efforts of the Coldwell Banker Siesta Key office agents that included book drives, bake sales and other activities throughout the year. Miller, an amputee, was the beneficiary of a running prosthetic from CAF in 2008 and since then has been actively fundraising on its behalf.

With Sarasota County on track to lose a nearly $1 million construction grant from the Southwest Florida Water Management District (SWFWMD), it could be time for desperate measures to get the stormwater runoff improvements to Siesta Key in motion. With two permits stuck in approval purgatory with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, time is run-

ning out to break ground on the Beach Road drainage improvement project. The recession bruised revenues of governing bodies, forcing them to put more scrutiny on how grants are used and timeliness of their objectives, explained Sarasota County Public Works Project Manager Curtis Smith. “And (SWFWMD) indicated in the past that they’re re-

It’s been five years since Mark Sharff sold his commercial cleaning supplies company, Vista Serv Corp. “Since then I’ve been a bum,” he joked during a July 16 interview with the Pelican Press. Now he’ll return to cleaning — but on a much larger scale. He plans to invest more than $100,000 to remodel the storefronts of nine retail spaces at the Southgate Village Shops center on Siesta Drive for the first time in almost 50 years. Sharff said construction workers would begin assembling the scaffolding for the renovation July 18, however, there is no activity as of press time. In a time when people were hesitant of realestate investment, Sharff bucked the trend in 2010 and bought some of the commercial property he plans to renovate. “It’s all about the return,” he said. It wasn’t a major investment to acquire the

So, after he was able to buy two more buildings to complete the string of shops he now owns, he was able to plan the renovation. “It looked like hell,” he said. “This should be Class B space.” The aesthetics are dreary. Customers are welcomed to the strip mall by a rusty sign and an absence of parking lot lines. “See if you can spot where the handicap spot

would tweak their concepts to fit the new contemporary feel of the renovation design, which was undertaken by architect Larry Hale. With the extra space afforded with the revamp, outside seating will be possible. “It doesn’t matter if it’s 95 degrees, people love to sit outside,” he said. He had to get easements from every tenant in the strip mall to widen the sidewalk. On July 16 Sharff distributed flyers with information about renovation, which is bittersweet for some of his tenants. “I have no objections, but I’m not crazy about the idea that I have to pay for a new sign,” said Tatyana Kukrecht-Bakota, owner of Sarasota Wigs and Post Mastectomy. She has been in the Southgate Village Shops center for 28 years but moved three

west Florida Water Management District documents obtained by the Pelican Press. However, in the Sarasota County preliminary budget for the 2013 fiscal year the construction commencement isn’t scheduled until October this year with a completion date of September 2013, nine months after the contract requires for building time and six months after the county is required to submit a final report. “I’m very concerned about the grant,” said Sarasota County Commissioner Nora Patterson, who represents constituents — and is also a resident — of Siesta. When time was running out for a grant to add sand to Turtle Beach three years ago, Patterson and then Sarasota County

Administrator Jim Ley went to Washington, D.C., to ask for an expedited permitting process from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. She hasn’t received any updates from County Administrator Randall Reid about the status of the permits. The funds have already been disbursed to the county, so if the time frames are not met, the county has to reimburse the $975,000 to the Water Management District. “The time frame is taking a lot longer than we would have hoped it would,” Smith said. “We’re still responding to comments from the Water Management District. We just have to allow for uncertainty in the permitting process.” With public funding through grants becoming more difficult

to seek and secure — and use on time — alternative funding through borrowing has been considered by the Sarasota County Commission. Commissioner Joe Barbetta said in a June interview with the Pelican Press he wanted to look at bonding out projects’ costs and starting them sooner, rather than relying on cash on hand or forecasted tax collections. In particular, Barbetta highlighted the beach improvement project, another construction initiative on Siesta Key that is expected to cost more than $20 million. “The rates are low,” he said. The dip in demand for construction services following the housing market crash brought down building costs, and with the Federal Reserve expected to con-

He is frustrated that Westfield Southgate Mall, a major commercial hub nestled in a dense residential district to the east, sits across two lanes of traffic. When inquiring about what he could have possibly seen in the strip mall, Sharff doesn’t have to say anything — he just raises his arm and points toward the mall’s double doors. “Imagine the kind of traffic we’d get if (the shops had a modern, welcoming look),” he said. In the original contract it said that the project should have started April 30, 2010, and finish exactly one year later, however, an extension was granted pushing the threshold ahead. The original grant contract, which drew funds from the Water Management Lands Trust Fund, was set to expire March 31, 2012. The county now has until Dec. 31, 2012, to complete construction of the project and until March 31 nest year to submit a final report, according to South-

shopfronts over two years ago and added a new sign. As part of the remodeling effort, signs will shrink to become uniform rectangles, Sharff said. According to the flyer he distributed, representatives from a local signage company would visit each tenant in the coming weeks. Anderson and Ellis Inc., Sarasota-based contractors, will oversee construction, which Sharff said would take approximately 100 days. Kukrecht-Bakota, a Yugoslavian immigrant who fled Soviet rule after World War II, has witnessed the revolving door of businesses in the shopping center and is hopeful the new look will boost shopping traffic. “The sketch looks good,” she said. “But, you know, only the future will tell.”

strict long-term interest rates, borrowing to build is currently cheap. “I guarantee they’re going to be higher then if we borrow today,” he said. The Siesta Key Crystal Classic master sand-sculpting competition in November will catch collateral effects from the delay. Organizers of the event usually use the area near the beach for additional parking spaces but are expected to lose that privilege because the drainage improvements would demolish the space. “It’s not that there’s any issues (in the new blueprints) folks are disagreeing on — it’s the time frame,” Smith said. “When it comes to permitting, we can’t make a schedule for individuals in other organizations.”

2012 PRIMARY ELECTION

elections

by Rod Thomson | Editor-at-Large

Primary election Q&A Sarasota County Commission District 5 Race Editor’s note: As the Aug. 16 primary election draws near, the Sarasota Observer will publish profiles and Q&As from each of the candidates who will represent the area. In this week’s issue, we profile candidates for Sarasota County Commission District 5 seat.

Charles D. Hines Age: 46 Family: Married to Susan Hines. Three children ages 15,13 and 10 Hometown: Venice Education: University of Florida: B.S. in political science and juris doctorate/law degree Relevant experience: Twentytwo years practicing law in Sarasota County Hines and co-owner of United Healthcare Services — a medical equipment-supply company. Member of the Sarasota County Tax Oversight Committee; Sarasota County Sheriff’s Advisory Committee; Sertoma Club of Venice; Venice Little League; Venice Chamber; Big Brothers Big Sisters. Website: charleshines.org What would be your top priorities if elected? 1. Continue to maintain a solid balanced county budget, without raising property taxes, and, within that, ensure our tax dollars are being properly spent. 2. Within our budget, continue to explore creative ways to maintain and enhance the quality-of-life opportunities for our citizens. Within these two, find ways for economic development, with the goal being assisting our business community in creating a more balanced economy in our county. 3. Re-establish trust and morale in the role of county government — both from the citizens’ prospective and the staff’s. Do you have a solution to the county’s ongoing procurement problems? I believe we should follow the advice we received from the experts in this field. Let County Administrator (Randall) Reid implement these policies and then let them work. At the same time, as a commissioner, while these are being implemented over the next few months, continue to listen to our customers (our citizens) and require that complaints or issues be reviewed and resolved in a timely and equitable manner. Are you satisfied with the current urban service boundary and the county’s ability to allow infill development? If not, what would you change? Yes, at this time. However, many

Sarasota County Commission’s District 5 covers the South County area, including Venice, North Port and Englewood, and has two men running in the Republican primary and no Democrat running. So, the winner of the Aug. 14 Republican primary will win the commission seat.

in the building industry say there is not a lot of land for residential building in North County. Lakewood Ranch should be coming online, so let’s see how that goes and its effect on that issue. South County seems to have enough for a while within the county, plus, considering the amount that is available in the lands that were annexed into the cities. One item that I believe needs further review is our county impact fees on redevelopment. We need to be sure that the way they are being calculated and the timing of the charge is not preventing the useful infill and redevelopment we are trying to encourage. Would you attempt to change EDC policies of seeking companies in Manatee County? I would need to research this further to see just what the EDC’s position is on this. However, our two counties, along with Charlotte County, are really becoming a regional power with crossover economic benefits. Thus, we should encourage working with each other and not attempt to cherry-pick companies from each other. What would you change to make the county more business-friendly and jobs-friendly? Implement what has been discussed above and demand of ourselves, and county staff, to treat our citizens as our county’s customers. Adopt the attitude that we are here to serve them. Do this through the fair interpretation of our existing policies/rules and assist our customers in accomplishing their projects in accordance with the policies and rules. Personal agendas need to stay out of implementation of policy. What makes you a better candidate than your opponent? Experience: Business, legal, leadership and community involvement. Sarasota County is a very diverse and unique county and to fully understand that uniqueness and the role of our county government, one must have been involved in the various groups and organizations that make up our county. I have done this over my lifetime in Sarasota County through my personal involvement and leadership roles in a variety of county, city, civic, business and nonprofit organizations. This experience and community commitment has prepared me for this position. Without this type of extensive experience, one is not prepared to address the wide-range of issues that come before our commission.

The main theme in the race is restoring trust in county government after the ongoing purchasing scandal that resulted in firings and criminal charges that cost County Administrator Jim Ley his job. The other main theme is the economy and making Sarasota County a more attractive place for businesses.

Randall (Randy) McLendon Age: 58 Family: Wife, Joni, married for 35 years; daughter Joy; son Joshua; one grandson Hometown: Cuthbert, Ga. Education: Bachelor’s degree in marketing from University of Georgia. Master’s degree in theology from Southwestern Baptist TheologiMcLendon cal Seminary Relevant experience: Pastor of Stilesboro Baptist Church, in Kennesaw, Ga., from 1979 to 1996. Realtor in Florida from 2000 to present; owner of a small medicaltranscription company since 1998. Founding member of Englewood’s tea party group, Taking Our Country Back. Website: voteforrandy.com What would be your top priorities if elected? To ensure that citizens know their voices are being heard and their concerns are being addressed by their elected leaders; that government does not act as a venture capitalist, investing taxpayer dollars in ventures outside the realm of essential services; that the people of Sarasota County are seen as citizens and not customers of the county; that taxpayer money is being well-spent and that essential services are provided in the most cost-effective manner possible; and to look for ways to reduce the size, scope and intrusiveness of government. Do you have a solution to the county’s ongoing procurement problems? Not yet. However, from my perspective, it seems to be more of a people problem than a procedure problem. I would like to have an exit interview with the recently resigned procurement manager. There seems to be a communication problem as, at least, an aspect of the issue and maybe even personality problems. I do believe this is a problem that must be addressed by the commissioners. I also believe that Sarasota County companies should be given preference in purchasing products and services, unless there are clear reasons not to do so. Are you satisfied with the current urban service boundary and the county’s ability to allow infill development? If not, what would you change?

I am satisfied with the urban service boundary where I-75 is the boundary. It seems in the South County area, the urban service boundary could be expanded quite a bit and still not reach I-75. However, a good bit of that area is within North Port city limits. I don’t have an answer/opinion on the infill development component yet; I need more info/education on that. It seems variances have been used to allow infill development in terms of highway access. My initial response is that the larger the proposed development, the more strictly it should adhere to concurrency requirements. Would you attempt to change EDC policies of seeking companies in Manatee County? This is another question where I need more information. However, for Sarasota County to have a policy of trying to entice businesses away from Manatee County — this is not very neighborly, to say the least, and I don’t believe that should be pursued. Assisting nearby companies that initiate conversation about moving is another matter altogether. What would you change to make the county more business-friendly and jobs-friendly? From my discussions with citizens, inter-departmental issues arise in which one department makes a decision that gets altered by a different department and it has to go back and forth. I believe inter-departmental teams could be formed for each new business, so that the assigned interdepartmental members of a team for XYZ Inc. could meet together face-toface to iron out issues for the business instead of the business owner having to “walk” his permitting through inter-departmental mazes. Job creation follows business development and growth, so making things easier for business will take care of the job problem. What makes you a better candidate than your opponent? I believe that each level of government has overstepped the limits that our Founding Fathers intended when designing a government for a free people. So, my desire to serve as Sarasota County commissioner goes beyond seeking to make wise decisions about potholes, sewers, development and the environment and beyond just leaving Sarasota County a better place for our children. I want all that, but I also want to see individual liberty and free-market capitalism celebrated. I want both the citizens and the governmental employees of those citizens to have a greater understanding and appreciation for the appropriate role of government.

Crosswalk issues and street safety plague Siesta The Florida Department of Transportation rejected requests for Midnight Pass safety improvements, including more signage and a lower speed limit, and the search for Village lighting continues. And the winner (kind of) is ...

Peter van Roekens and Mark Smith, members of the Siesta Key Village Association, did not settle on an ideal choice for crosswalk lighting in Siesta Village during the second round of product demonstrations July 5. But, Sarasota-based Sunovia showed off a flood light that both men decided was the best of the display. The EvoLucia LED Low Profile Flood Light looked like it balanced the goals of safety, structural and aesthetic integrity the Village merchants hope to achieve.

if you go with overhead lighting,” Metchear told van Roekens and Siesta Key Chamber of Commerce Chairman Mark Smith. Siesta Key Village Association representatives want to find a balance between aesthetics and efficacy, and, although Stonelight’s products are visually pleasing, they don’t spill light far enough across the crosswalk. The favorite, according to van Roekens, was the Low Profile Flood Light, a flat light panel with LED lights generating 30 watts of light. It would have to be mounted

more than 10 feet in the air but would be less prone to vandalism than the bollard, he said. Smith applauded its efficacy but said to mount the product Sunovia would need to make a custom light pole matching the street light fittings already in place in the Village. But, that could inflate costs, which Smith said is another factor he hopes to balance with a selection. On the vandalism issue, Metchear assured that his bollard was the right choice for SKVA. “If somebody really wants to break it, they’ll have to come back with a sledgehammer,” he said. In fact, Metchear was so sure of his product, he offered to return for another demonstration after tweaking the angle of the bollard light. Also, Smith said Jag Lighting, which did a similar demonstration June 19, wants another chance to demonstrate its product.

On the Fourth of July, as 1,500 pounds of explosives tore into the night sky illuminating most of Siesta Key, the crosswalks in Siesta Village remained dim. But, 13 stakeholders, in the quest to change that condition, gathered the following day around a 10foot ladder to test lighting options for the pedestrian-heavy commercial district. The outcome: close, but no light for that cigar. “What else you got?” asked Siesta Key Association Vice President Peter van Roekens to the business owners demonstrating their LED lighting products at the Thursday, July 5 demonstration in front of Daiquiri Deck Raw Bar and Gilligan’s Island Bar & Grill. Sarasota County Public Works Director Jim Harriott also attended the hour-long demonstration. Craig Hall, vice president of business development for Sunovia, stood on a ladder to show off his firm’s Cobra Head Luminaire and Low Profile Flood Light. “This is the lighting of the future,” he told the Pelican Press during the demonstration. “I guarantee in five years everyone will be using LEDs.” Dick Metchear and Betsy Piper, husband-and-wife owners of Naples-based Stonelight, brought two waist-high bollards with Sunovia products installed within them. “You’re making a huge mistake

curve on which Chen was killed but was turned down to avoid potential complaints from nearby residents. When a pedestrian activates the flashing crosswalks, an audible signal is activated, as well. FDOT installed flashing speedlimit radar signs on Beach Road near the main entrance to the public beach but has yet to release data showing the signs’ effectiveness, which would make a case for more flashing signs on Siesta. The agency waited two weeks to turn the visual radar on to collect baseline statistics on car speed, which can be compared with two numbers from the following two weeks to ascertain the average speed change due to the radar signs. But, the pole that would secure the sign Luckner suggested on Midnight Pass Road had not been crash tested, which originally created the delay. “FDOT doesn’t want signs all over the place,” said Sarasota County Commissioner Nora Patterson at a July 5 SKA meeting. “Usually, when you bug them twice, you’ve probably got them as far as you’re going to go.” SKA member Bob Luckner said if given the data from the interactive speed-limit sign on Beach Road he would prepare an analysis. But, for now, the wait continues on Siesta Key traffic safety features. We gave it a good go,” Luckner said.

Manatees are starting to return to Siesta Key waterways after Tropical Storm Debby churned up their habitat.

The Public Facilities Financing Advisory Board will use Sarasota County staff to analyze ways to bolster funding.

When Siesta Key Association member Dave Thomas spots manatees from his canal-front home, he jumps into a kayak and trails the herd. The creatures’ sloth-like pace allows him to keep up. “It’s a lot of fun and it’s nice to be able to highlight their location,” he said. Manatees’ slow-moving nature is also a great hindrance in areas with high boat traffic, such as the Grand Canal on Siesta Key. And with pods starting to return to canals after Tropical Storm Debby filled the waterways with debris and churned the sediment, Thomas is nervous about the underage captains he recently spotted making narrow canals potential death traps for the manatees. A recent study by Mote Marine Laboratory concluded that manatees are able to hear boats bearing down on them. The problem, the study concluded, is that the crunchy vegetation manatees gorge on makes hearing other noises difficult. Also, the hulking gray creatures blend into the dark-green canal waters and expose only a foot-long patch on their backs and their nostrils when taking breaths. So, when a boat is traveling fast enough to make wake, it’s nearly impossible to see them, Thomas explained. Mote Marine Laboratory Public Relation Specialist Hayley Rutger said the research organization does not consider the Grand Canal a hot spot for manatees, so there may be little correlation between the tropical storm and the subsequent lack of sightings. Another manatee sighting that troubled Thomas was near Big Pass. He spotted a herd of roughly 10 manatees moving to a

Public entities, private firms and public-private organizations all get squeezed when consumer demand dips. But, trying to coordinate a lockstep climb out of a recession is a tough task. (See sidebar.) When the Public Facilities Financing Advisory Board met Friday, July 13, members acknowledged that road impact fees have plummeted since 2007 and are now resting at the forecasted bottom of the skid at $2.7 million. The board discussed ways to bolster Sarasota County revenues, which included utility fees — taxes on electricity, natural gas and water. “I’m not going to vote to increase anything,” said advisory board member Ed Wyatt. “There’s way too many (fees) out there now.” Wyatt gave the single dissenting vote when the five-member board voted in favor of studying similar utility fees in charter counties in other states, which is an option that was opened in March but swiftly dismissed by the Sarasota County Commission. “Now that we have (Sarasota County) have staff assistance, let’s open that file — that vault — and peek in once again,” said board member Roland Piccone. “Let’s look at more fees to finance public facilities.” By 2013, the impetus to find alternative revenue sources could weaken. Any building permit issued after Feb. 1, 2013, will be subject to double the road impact fees charged since early 2011. Sarasota County commissioners cut those fees in half to encourage private capital investment following the housing crash.

Don’t: • Try to push the animals back to deeper water. Animals such as manatees or dolphins can be injured when people try to push them along the sandy shore. Given their size, manatees especially also pose a danger to people. • Feed, water or harass manatees. Federal and state laws forbid “harassing” them — harassment includes offering them food or water. • Litter. Please be careful with your trash, and carry out everything you carried to the beach. * Courtesy of Mote Marine Laboratory small strait near Big Pass. The gathering may have been a mating herd, Rutger explained. During summer, female manatees will try to evade male suitors by swimming into shallow beach waters, such as those of Big Pass. “Boaters and beachgoers should give mating herds a wide berth,” according to an informational email from Mote Marine. “Both for your own safety and for that of the manatees.”

Similarly, the moratorium on educational system impact fees will expire Dec. 14, two years after the Governing Board of the Sarasota County School District and the Sarasota County Commission voted in support of the measure. He just leaves you breathless, dumbfounded … enraged. Barack Obama is now incessantly demonstrating and articulating his disdain and hatred for free enterprise and capitalism at every turn. His words and actions are anti-American, anti-individualism. He is pure despotic, the poster boy for government dependency and centralized, Marxist control. It’s really scary. Call-to-arms alarming. With every dictatorial decree — the latest his arbitrary executive order to wipe out portions of Bill Clinton’s welfare law without congressional approval — Obama increasingly resembles the Third World socialist, anti-capitalist despots in the vein of Hugo Chavez and, dare we say, the Castro brothers. Capricious, confiscatory tyrants. Too extreme of a characterization? Sample portions of Obama’s Friday speech about entrepreneurism and success in the accompanying box. Judge for yourself. The underlying, and yet clearly blatant, message is “the government” is responsible for everyone’s success. As Obama sees it, individuals — with their own rational minds and choices and effort — never achieve or build or grow without the hand of the government. they never do it without the government hand that takes wealth from one and redistributes it, munificently, to another. Tell that to Michael Klauber, Phil Mancini, Jean-Pierre Knaggs, the Caragiulo brothers and Michael Quillen; to Dr. David Shoemaker; to Michael Saunders, Judy Green; to Bill Bacon and Eddie Kalin; to Vance Dickinson, Jack Urfer, Jim Gettel; to Eddie Morton; to Harvey Vengroff; to David and Molly Jackson … We could fill this page and more of names of successful entrepreneurs in Sarasota who made their achievements happen, who built businesses because of their individual efforts, not because of government handouts. Yes, many of them received help along the way. But in the vast majority of those instances, that help came in the form of a fair exchange, because one helped the other. Business success in the freeenterprise system is always built on the free, peaceful, mutually beneficial exchange between two parties. Two parties acting in their own, rational, self interest. Take that alleged “great teacher.” If you had one, you were not given that teacher. You paid for her or him — through taxes or tuition. You may have learned great lessons from that teacher, but that teacher was not responsible for what you learned or the actions you took to succeed. Those were your actions, your effort. If you’re an entrepreneur who obtains startup capital for a business, you are not given that capital. It is a free, peaceful, fair trade — the investor’s capital in exchange for what he believes will be a fair return on his capital. And that return is contingent on the entrepreneur’s ingenuity and ability to make his business a success, his own effort. “Somebody invested in roads and bridges,” Obama said. Those roads and

ANTI-CAPITALIST, ANTI-INDIVIDUAL, ANTI-AMERICAN “If you’ve been successful, you didn’t get there on your own … “If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. “If you’ve got a business, you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen. (italics added) “The Internet didn’t get invented on its own. Government research created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off the Internet.” — Barack Obama

bridges came out of the sweat and toil and labor of every taxpayer. They didn’t come from “the government.” To hear the anti-free-enterprise, the anti-individual, the anti-American words come out of this president is beyond belief, especially so for those of us who believe the tenets of the Declaration of Independence — that we, as individuals, are endowed by our Creator with the inalienable rights of Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. That is, the right to live free and the right to our property, by our own effort. It is un-American for the president of the United States to say what Obama says. Indeed, the president of the United States should be, must be this nation’s biggest champion for the American Dream, that you can go as far and as high as your efforts will take you. Believers in free enterprise and the American Dream, this is a call to arms.

+ Beach parking: Bond it now

There simply is no solution to Siesta Key beach’s parking shortage. There are only choices. Nary a day or week or month goes by on Siesta Key when the subject of beach parking or Village parking doesn’t enter a Siesta Key conversation. It’s like the

weather; it doesn’t go away. That’s not for lack of trying, though. There is, of course, the big $21 million, 12year plan to redevelop Siesta Key beach’s parking lot, landscaping and amenities. But 12 more years? How many more Siesta Key Village Association and Sarasota County Commission meetings are going to occur with someone complaining about parking code violations? It’s seemingly futile. The latest came 10 days ago when Sarasota County Commissioner Nora Patterson received email complaints about a few residents on Avenida Del Mare engaging in pay-for-parking on their properties, a code violation. “The whole street looks like a parking lot,” Patterson said at a commission meeting. “It’s just wall-to-wall cars.” What’s a commission to do? We had to chuckle over the fact that enforcing the ban on pay-for-residentialparking was difficult to achieve — primarily because the code-enforcement staff doesn’t work weekends, when, of course, the violations are most prevalent. You’re kidding, right? But instead of county officials taking responsibility and making the obvious choice (i.e. reschedule staff time to match violation time), there was talk about not having the money to hire more people, yada, yada, yada. Talk about an easy choice: Re-do the code-enforcement staff’s work hours. The bigger issue is much more complex. Capsulate it this way: You have a free product in high demand (the beach) and a shortage of space (parking), in a residential community that doesn’t like traffic and crowds and in a high-value, real-estate destination. To complicate matters more, the beach also serves as a high-value export for the greater area’s economy. In other words, it attracts visitors who spend money in the community, fueling local businesses, real-estate values and the coffers of city and county governments. In sum, the beachgoers are good for the economy and community; you don’t want them to go away. But if you don’t make it attractive and convenient, they won’t come. As we said, there is no solution, only choices. The trick is finding the most effective choice. The $21 million beach parking redevelopment choice appears to be an effective one. Funding it, however, presents more choices. At this point, the 12-year timeline is the working plan, largely because of the availability of funding. We were lukewarm earlier when Commissioner Joe Barbetta urged his colleagues to go for a bond issue to expedite the project. There was gnashing about how the whole project at once would dampen tourism and might adversely affect the county’s borrowing limits. But this reminds us of another choice: You can live with your toothache for 12 more years and be miserable, or you can get it yanked, borrow to pay the price and live pain free for the next 12 years. We’ll yank the tooth. Choose the parking project now. It’s worth the cost.

So, why then do I write to Siesta Key residents about this fear of flying: Siesta Key fitness. First lady Michelle Obama has made it her project to get Americans exercising more, eating less and losing weight. A worthy objective, and here’s where Siesta Keyers excel. Have you seen the abundance of runners, joggers, walkers, bikers on Midnight Pass? Every day, year-round, especially in the early morning, people of all ages, shapes and sizes move to their own drummer. The clothes and techniques and equipment vary. Some wear stylish athletic gear, others old T-shirts and tank tops. Some move with grace and speed, others just move. Some have earplugs to enjoy their music or news. Others walk and run and listen to the birds. Some people move while talking with their friends. Others run alone. And some move while talking on a cell phone. (Well, they’re at least moving.) No matter the personal approach, we see Siesta Keyers attempting to stay in shape. Bravo, all of you. And may one of you sit next to me on my next flight out of Sarasota or Tampa. LETTER TO THEEDITOR + Shame on Sarasota Dear Editor: What a shame that the people who purchased condos at the Dolphin Towers cannot live in their homes. One has to wonder how this building passed the city of Sarasota inspections, and why aren’t the condo owners going after the builder/developer as well as the city of Sarasota? Granted, Sarasota invested more than $1 million in the defunct parking-meter program and has made a big issue out of maintaining the “Surrender” statue, so it is doubtful that they can assist these people with financial help. By the way, did you know that this is the third time that Sarasota has spent taxpayer money for parking meters? It is surprising to many residents that Sarasota thinks of the city as full of “arts and culture,” but the Planning Committee seems to continue making “bad choices.” I agree with Sarasota City Commissioner Shannon Snyder in that we ought to have the meters taken to the skeet club and let everyone who hated them shoot ’em up with slugs. And, that Duncan Solutions of Milwaukee charged $10,000 apiece for the meters and will only reimburse $1,000: Shame on them. And shame on Sarasota for making such a big mistake, not once, but three times. Kareen Miller Siesta Key

Working as a bartender on Siesta Key for the past eight years, Kurt Becker has made a lasting impression on vacationers and locals, alike. A Chicagoborn sports fanatic who’s not afraid to tell it like it is, Becker’s quick wit and outgoing personality have made him a fixture in Siesta Key’s nightlife, so much so, that even customers who’ve met him years ago still ask for him by name. “He can talk to anybody,” said Rick Davies, general manager at the Old Salty Dog, where Becker currently works. “He loves to give people a hard time with some sarcasm, in good way. He’s the perfect bartender.” Tuesday, July 10, on one of his days off, Becker was trimming a tree near his house, when he fell off a ladder and broke two vertebrae in his back. “It was a devastating injury,” said his brother, Matt Becker. “He had surgery the day after the fall, and right now he’s paralyzed from the waist down. There’s still a possibility of him walking again, but it’s minimal.” Almost immediately after word of Becker’s accident hit the Key, there was an outpouring of support for the man who’s had an impact on so many others. Eight-and-a-half years and a slew of regulars later, Fassler has maintained an impressive rapport with his clientele, to the point his book is nearly full. Although Fassler is a long way from his home state of Michigan, he feels lucky to have such strong connections with the SKOB owners, as well as the people who visit the bar. “I’ve spent Thanksgiving and Christmas with (the owners) and we’ve even vacationed together,” he says. Fassler also visits seasonal regulars when he vacations on their turf. “There isn’t a state where I don’t know someone,” he says. “I get in trouble if I don’t stop by.” But, ultimately, Fassler says he doesn’t like taking vacations because he doesn’t like missing his friends sitting across the bar. It’s clear he is now in it for the people — not free doughnuts. “This is their bar, I just work here,” he says. “If it wasn’t for them, I wouldn’t be here.” — Rachel S. O’Hara

“I walked in and asked if they needed helped and I started the next day,” he says. Fassler shared the owner’s vision of a live-music venue with good food and, most importantly, good people. And, although he was hired as a server, less than a year later he found himself as the friendly face behind the bar. He began making lifelong friends through his interactions with his customers — and he still got to listen to the live music that he loves. During his first month as a bartender, Fassler came up with a way to keep all of his memories fresh, thanks to a seasonal couple from upstate New York — his first regulars. Not wanting to forget them, he jotted down the date, their names’ and their favorite drinks in a small book in which he still writes. “It was kind of my Facebook before Facebook came along,” says Fassler, who, ironically enough, doesn’t have a Facebook account. Fassler’s first regulars still call to wish him a happy birthday each year.

Gabriel Fassler knew he was destined to be in the restaurant and bar industry when he took his first job working at a mom-and-pop diner in Detroit at just 12 years old. “I used to wash dishes for 20 bucks and got free doughnuts on Saturday afternoons,” he says. By age 16, he had aspirations of opening his own restaurant, but life has taken him in a different direction. Fassler got his first taste of the laid-back beach and Village lifestyle in 2003, when he took a break from opening restaurants and live music venues in Kentucky and Tennessee to vacation on Siesta Key. “I liked it so much I went up and packed up all my stuff and came here,” says Fassler, a Siesta Key resident who bikes to work and loves to fish. He took his first job at Sharkey’s on the Pier in Venice, alongside good friend Geno Pedigo. He later learned of the Pedigo family’s plan to open a bar in the Village called Siesta Key Oyster Bar, otherwise known as SKOB.

How long have you been cycling? I’ve been cycling for 38 years, or so. What kind of bike do you use? My No. 1 is my Felt F1 Team Issue with Fulcrum Racing Zeros, but my commuter bike is a 1985 Miyata that belonged to my brother when we were young. Do you compete? I do compete. I’ve raced for a few years, maybe 50 races. But, the medal of honor comes from winning the weekend world champions. What is one of your best cycling memories? Racing with my friends/ teammates at a five-day stage

Do you like to watch the Tour de France and other famous cycling races? I watch every day, and almost every minute of the tour. I began watching the tour in the 1980s when Greg Lemond was competing. I also love the spring classics, Paris Roubaix, Liège-BastogneLiège, Tour of Flanders.

87317

How and why did you get into cycling? I got into cycling as a boy, with my brother, Kevin. I started riding before it was a choice. I just remember always riding bikes.

Rock on by Rachel S. O’Hara | Staff Photographer

Friday Fest is a little bit country This month, Adrian Ray and his country band rocked the stage at Friday Fest, held July 13, at the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall. The Van Wezel moved the monthly summer fest inside this month due to the rainy weather; however, there were still plenty of smiles spotted up and down the aisles. People who attended enjoyed food from Boar’s Head and Mattison’s, drinks from Budweiser and entertaining commentary by emcee Cliff Roles. Adrian Ray’s “heavy country music packed the auditorium and got people dancing by the stage and in their seats.

“A lot of people don’t listen well,” says Tim Beasley. “They are thinking of their next line or where they are going next in the scene, instead of letting a line fall naturally into place.”

Under the Mic By day, FST Improv founding member Tim Beasley is the witty one-line comedian prescribing giggles to his audience. By night, he’s providing much needed laughter to patients as an ER nurse.

M

artin Martinson is an odd 40-ish-year-old guy who lives with his mother and has an Internet-based business making Civil War figurines out of meat. Martinson is just one of Tim Beasley’s characters he portrays onstage as a member of FST Improv.

“He’s a strange dude,” Beasley laughs. Beasley is also an odd 40-ish-year-old guy, but he doesn’t live with his mother and, considering he’s a “sometimes vegetarian,” it’s safe to say he isn’t making miniature Ulysses S. Grants out of ground beef. He is, however, an emergency-room nurse with a clever sense of humor.

XXX COVER STORY

THURSDAY, JULY 19, 2012

(continued from page 1)

In 2001, Beasley found an ad seeking students for an improv class taught by Rebecca Langford (now Rebecca Hopkins, director of FST Improv). One thing led to another, and he and 15-or-so fellow students were performing free shows for their friends and family, then for the public. It slowly evolved into the improv troupe that it is today. Beasley, along with Hopkins and Christine Alexander, is one of three remaining comedians left from the original FST Improv group. Beasley isn’t known as the type of cast member who hogs the spotlight. He’s the quiet guy — or as quiet as a comedian can be — who once in a while delivers that perfect one-line zinger with a faint drawl that only a man from Montgomery, Ala., could. The one-liner art form takes a wellhoned balance of cerebral, visceral and impeccable timing. It’s the type of humor developed by a guy who in high school was almost voted funniest but walked away superlative-free, instead. “I’m the smart-ass,” he says proudly. And he has been that way since junior high, when he discovered he was funny. “(I was) devious. Everybody thought I was the good child, but I got away with more than they knew,” he says. When Beasley was 10 years old, he would make long-distance calls to “The Gong Show” trying to get on the NBC latenight talent show hosted by Chuck Barris. “It would show up on the phone bill, and (my mom) never knew I did it,” Beasley said. “She would call the phone company and cuss them out, and I didn’t tell her until many years later.” Beasley thinks his mother, Brenda, inspired his humor. “She was really good at one-liners and sarcasm that would come from nowhere and shock you,” he says. Beasley doesn’t typically like standup comedy but does enjoy Jerry Lewis, Bob

Newhart and Ellen DeGeneres. “Physical comedy, if it’s done really well (makes me laugh),” he says. “Because I’m not physical, it kind of amazes me when it’s done right.” And Beasley would rather be sitting than “standing up,” anyhow. “I’m known as the non-physical member of the group; everyone deemed me that,” he said about the running joke among the ensemble members. “They say, ‘Get Tim a chair, he wants to sit down.’” Though he lacks the high energy he considers to be a characteristic of a good im-

prov actor, he’s still rolling in the laughs. “This is my therapy,” Beasley explains. Beasley spends two 12-hour shifts a week as an ER triage nurse at Doctors Hospital of Sarasota. He’s been working in the emergency room for eight years; he was in intensive care for 10 years before that. Beasley says intensive care is depressing — he prefers the pace of the ER. “People are in and out; that’s a bonus, I think — there’s no real attachment,” he says. One of the questions people often ask is if he gets good material working there.

“(We get) strange complaints like, ‘I have termites crawling all over me,’ or people calling an ambulance for a toothache. It’s stuff normal people probably wouldn’t go to the ER for.” But, for Beasley, ER jokes are as off-limits as jokes about Sept. 11. “Either people wouldn’t believe it, or they think you are being mean,” he says. Beasley is far from mean. But his cast members can’t expect “Nurse Beasley” to come to the rescue when someone gets hurt. The last time a cast member slipped and fell down, he just laughed like everyone else. On the other hand, he has had to use his FST skills in the ER. “There’s a lot of improv that goes on in the ER,” he says. “You never know what’s coming next.” And, sometimes, comedy has a curing effect on him. “Sometimes I’m driving (to a show) and I’m like, ‘Oh God, I don’t want to do it tonight,’” he says. “Then there’s something about the audience that just turns it on, and I remember, ‘Oh yeah! This is fun!’”

+ RCAD grad animates monstrous project As buzz over “Hotel Transylvania” starts to swirl this summer, remember to keep this fun little nugget in mind: The movie’s lead animator was a Ringling College of Art and Design graduate. Joshua Beveridge, who won a Student Academy Award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in 2005, is one of those RCAD alums whose career path makes for good college recruitment fodder. An animator at Sony Pictures Imageworks, the 30-year-old Asheville, N.C., native already has several major films on his résumé, including Will Smith’s post-apocalyptic blockbuster, “I Am Legend,” and Tim Burton’s 2010 reboot of “Alice in Wonderland.” Slated to hit movie theaters at the end of September, “Hotel Transylvania” is a 3D comedy about a five-star resort for famous monsters. Voiced by Adam Sandler, Andy Samberg, Selena Gomez and Kevin James, the movie is bound to be a Halloween homerun. Though its release is still months away, Beveridge has created a Transylvanian following on his Facebook page by posting pictures of the movie’s animation crew and linking to its trailer. He says it’s the most fun he’s had animating a movie.

The Sarasota Silver Stars are looking for the best playwright since sliced bread. The Sarasota Silver Stars will host a play reading festival Nov. 16 and Nov. 17 and are seeking one- to 10-minute-long plays that will be presented in a reader’s-theater style. Plays will be accepted until Aug. 15 and can be submitted to The Players, 838 N. Tamiami Trail, Sarasota. For more information, visit theplayers.org.

+ Sarasota Opera seeks volunteers Altos can’t change light bulbs because they can’t get up that high. But changing light bulbs isn’t the only thing for which The Sarasota Opera needs volunteers. One perk of volunteering: tickets to the dress rehearsals. If you’ve ever wanted to get involved in opera but can’t carry a tune, this might be a better option than climbing up on stage. Visit the “Volunteer Page” of Sarasotaopera.org for more information.

+ Still talking about it …

+ You say, ‘goodbye,’ and I say, ‘hello’

Last week, I talked with Nik Wallenda on the phone, or should I say “on the wire.” It has been more than a month since hundreds of Sarasotans crowded the streets near Mattison’s City Grille to watch a live stream of the Sarasotan daredevil’s 26-minute, 1,450-foot wire-walk across Niagara Falls. As Wallenda fist-pumped, stepping off the cable, the crowd cheered for its hometown hero. Since then, he’s done “a million interCourtesy photo views” with Nik Wallenda outlets all over the world. “The most gratifying part was the thousands of emails I received, and continue to receive, about how inspired people are to pursue their dreams,” he says. “That’s something I push with people: Pursue your dreams and never give up.” Niagara Falls Canada Mayor Jim Diodati mentioned commemorating Wallenda’s stunt with a bronze sculpture to be located where he stepped off the cable — and into history. Wallenda says: “It’s exciting, and it may be excessive, but it’d be quite an honor.” He won’t be back in Sarasota until September. Until then, he’s got crossing the Grand Canyon in his sights and has been having meetings about the strunt. He’s also hinted about crossing from one continent to another at the Bosphorus Strait in Turkey.

When Observer Media Group Executive Editor/ Publisher Lisa Walsh told me Sarasota was the cultural capital of Florida, I immediately packed my bags and took the next flight out of St. Louis — I was sold. Growing up in the type of family that sings eightpart vocal harmonies around the piano and as the girl who’s happiest on stage, in the seats of a theater or navigating art museums, it didn’t take me much time to understand that Lisa was spot-on. Ballet, opera, theater, orchestra, choruses, museums and galleries galore — holy Sarasota! I’m so fortunate to call this place home. As the new arts and entertainment editor for The Observer, I’m looking forward to sitting next to you at performances, chatting with you during intermission and sharing my thoughts with you after the show. I can’t wait to introduce you to those I meet at gallery openings, on stage, backstage and at the forefront of the arts-and-entertainment scene. I can’t tell you how thrilled I am to meet new faces and make new friends. Forget easing in with a big toe — I’m ready to cannonball into this scene. So, please introduce yourself. Follow me on Twitter and Facebook. Ask me questions, share your thoughts or just say, “Hello,” because I’m anxious to know as many readers and fellow A&Elovers as possible and for you to know me the way you’ve gotten to know former A&E Editor Heidi Kurpiela. Cultural coalescence Ringling’s intriguing Deco Japan new exhibit reflects a surprising cultural idea.

Japanese culture and art deco seem like contradictory elements. When discussing ’20s and ’30s Japan, words such as conservative, traditional and militaristic might spring to mind. But the “Deco Japan: Shaping Art and Culture, 1920-1945” exhibit, currently at The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art, speaks to a merging of modern Western ideas of that time with ancient Japanese tradition and plays on the tensions of those two concepts. It is more than pleasing to the eyes; it’s a fascinating look into culture and society. The same bold, clean lines, vibrant colors and dynamic designs found in American art deco are present in this exhibit. Traditional Japanese imagery, lore and

society are reflected with a deco feel in everything from clothing, postcards, dishes and furniture to combs, songbooks and smoking sets. The jazz culture of short hemlines, rouge lips and bobbed hair that was hip in America translated to Japan. One of the most striking recurring themes of the exhibit was the depiction of Japanese women transformed into independent, drinking-and-smoking flapper types. The murmur at the members-only opening Thursday, July 12 was that the exhibit is surprising and different. The opening attracted more than 400 people to see the 200-plus works provided on loan by the Levenson Collection to The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art.

RECIPE

Part one:

The beauty and bounty of basil I

f there’s an herb more strongly associated with summer than basil, I don’t know what it is. That is likely because the plant is grown as an annual in the temperate climates of the world. In reality, most basils are perennials, albeit extremely tender ones. I learned this first-hand when I began to grow herbs on Longboat Key shortly after I moved here. My little garden was inside the pool cage and not far from the edge of a canal in a microclimate that well suited the herb. And, though the plants had become woody, to my great amazement they were still happily producing on Christmas Day. You can be sure that I let my frozen friends up North know about that. (What … me gloat?) Grown in a location it likes and carefully nourished, hydrated and pruned, a basil plant can live for many years. I first grew this herb in the 1970s in Michigan. If you wanted basil in those days, you had to grow it. This was before plasticpackaged herbs became ubiquitous in the supermarket. It was even before seedlings were readily available via mail or in garden centers. I started seed on a warming

PASTA WITH PESTO Start to finish: less than 30 minutes Yield: 4 to 6 entrée servings

INGREDIENTS: Pesto 4 cups basil leaves, loosely packed 1/2 cup parsley 2 to 3 cloves garlic, peeled 1/2 cup Parmesan, freshly grated

3/4 cup olive oil 1/4 cup pignoli (pine nuts) (optional) PASTA: 1 pound linguini 1 tablespoon olive oil 4 tablespoons butter

DIRECTIONS: • Bring a large kettle of salted water to a rolling boil. • Prep the pesto ingredients while it is heating: Remove basil leaves from stems and do the same with parsley. Peel the garlic and grate the cheese. • Add a tablespoon of olive oil to the water. Add the pasta and cook until it is al dente (slightly resistant to the bite). Start to test after 10 minutes. (If you are using fresh pasta, it will cook more quickly.) pad and grew the seedlings under lights in the basement. Gardeners have beginners’ luck. I put the seedlings out too small and too early and they not only survived but thrived in a somewhat damp, east-facing spot with light shade in the morning and full sun the rest of the day. “This is easy,” I thought, leading me to try every kind of basil I could find. Even in those days, there were many and today … wow! The Burpee seed catalog has 21 listings for basil; Stokes has 18; and Johnny’s has 31. If you are inclined to start from seed, you could spend a lifetime experimenting with different varieties in red and purple as well

as green, with leaf sizes ranging from a child’s palm (lettuce leaf basil) to a baby’s fingernail (spicy globe and other “microphylla” cultivars). Most casual gardeners, however, grow from small plants available at the Sarasota Farmers Market and local garden centers. Sweet basil and spicy globe seem to be the most readily obtainable, though you will occasionally find lettuce leaf, opal and other more unusual types. I have bought lovely, organically grown plants from My Mother’s Garden, a vendor at the Saturday market downtown. This year’s seedlings came from good ol’ Home Depot, and they

are growing beautifully (though at the moment recovering from the Debby deluge). It is no longer necessary to grow basil to enjoy it but doing so has some special rewards. A basil plant is a thing of beauty with a finish that would put satin to shame and an enticing scent variously described as pungent, sweet, clove-like, anise-like and

Add cheese and process briefly to combine. Stir in pine nuts, if using. • Drain pasta, reserving about 1/4 cup of the cooking water. • Return pasta to cooking pot; add butter in small bits. • Add pesto and toss to combine. If it seems too stiff, add reserved cooking water a tablespoon at a time to achieve desired consistency. • Serve immediately with a green salad and crusty bread. * Pesto can be made ahead without cheese and refrigerated or frozen in individual portions or even an ice cube tray, if desired.

having a hint of mint. Six plants will provide more than enough for most households. Plant them (in twos) in a sunny location and start looking up ways to use your harvest. At the top of the list will be pesto, the classic summer topping for your favorite pasta. It is a preparation with many recipes and many debates. Here is a good place to start.

music >> Celebrating Sarasota with the Artist Series Concerts There’s a lot to celebrate these days, and The Artist Series Concerts of Sarasota, with an innovative new summer series that featured 143 performers (in two weeks), is leading the way. The ASCS has been chock-full of talent the past 16 seasons, but the inspiration to broaden its base to summer, using both local and imported talent, was sheer genius. Bringing 10 performances to a variety of venues — from rehearsal studios to Sainer Pavillion — brought even the savviest Sarasota arts mavens to some new sites. As the song goes, “You Gotta Have a Gimmick,” and the gimmicks, or lynchpins, of this musical feast were, in the “Pops” week, the charming Broadway and cabaret stars, Liz Callaway and Alex Rybeck, followed by the celebrated Albers String Trio for the “Classical” week. Having full programs featuring these talented musicians would have been gift enough. But, hearing them as the bread with some of Sarasota’s finest as the filling made for two weeks of delicious musical sandwiches. A review of 143 performers would take us somewhere into next September, so we’ll give you some of the highlights. Sarasota Orchestra principal bassist John Miller brought out the rarely encountered flamenco bass, and the orchestra’s first tuba, Jay Hunsberger, wove his magic with a rendition of the “Queen of the Night” aria from Mozart’s “Magic Flute.” Irish harpist Olivia Swaan showed a dynamic range of col-

ors instrumentally and vocally. Gloria Musicae presented a diversity of styles from early American to Gershwin, and the treble voices of Belle Canto sang a medley of evocative pop and folk songs. On the “Classical” calendar, a bevy of big-voiced singers, including Michelle Giglio, Carol Sparrow, Rebecca Price and baritone Joseph Ryan, proved opera is very much alive in our hometown. Organist Ann Stephenson-Moe showed off the wondrous instrument at Church of the Redeemer and, yes, still in the “Classical” week, juggler Rafael DeCarlo, from Circus Sarasota, wowed us with a multitude of spinning balls atop his fingers, nose and head. If this sounds like the amateur hour, think again. Somehow, Lee Dougherty Ross, artistic director of the Artist Series Concerts, and John Fischer, executive director, have found a way to blend circus acts with tubas then add singers, pinches of pianists and heaping spoonsful of string players to created a recipe for success. Yes, some ingredients were tastier than others. Fourteen-year-old Maria Wirries pretty much stole the shows she appeared in, and soprano Lynne Meskey — usually seen in the top row of various Sarasota choruses —waltzed away with the best “Summertime” heard in years. The point is, Sarasota’s got live-in but internationally capable talent, and this new summer series was the perfect showcase for it. This is my last music column until the fall, but check out my blog at www.YourObserver.com over the summer for musical travels to Santa Fe, N.M., and points west, as well as reprints at www.junelebell.com. And have a wonderful summer! — June LeBell

theater >> ‘All Shook Up’ Sorry folks, Elvis is not alive, but you can see his facsimile in the rock ’n’ roll musical, “All Shook Up,” now playing at PLATO @ The Golden Apple. Written by Joe DiPietro (author of “Nice Work if You Can Get It,” “Memphis,” and “I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change”), the story borrows loosely from the plot of Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night.” Kyle Ennis Turoff has energetically directed this mix-and-match tale of romantic mishaps set 1955 in a small town that is rocked on its heels by the arrival of guitar-toting, singing, motorcycling, heartbreaking hero, Chad, handsomely played by Logan O’Neill. Nikki White is adorable as Natalie, the garage mechanic who falls for him and transforms herself into a guy named Ed in order to be close to him. White makes this transformation funny — and almost believable — as the audience roots for her to win her man. Notable thespian contributions to the B-story romances abound, including Jason Kimble as humble but hopeful Dennis; Jaszy McAllister as sweet Lorraine; Craig Weiskerger in a Romeo turn as Dean; Jared Weldon as Jim; and Ariel Blue as Sylvia. Rounding out the comedic end are Helen Holliday as Matilda; Alana Opie as Miss Sandra; and Ben Turoff as the strong and silent sheriff. Featuring many of Presley’s most famous songs, the highly enjoyable music selections include, “Blue Suede Shoes,” “Heartbreak Hotel,” “A Little Less Conversation,” “Love Me Tender,” “Jailhouse Rock” and more than 25 songs by the time this lightweight, sentimental entertainment has reached a happy con-
