Travel Through History

Take a step back in time with self-guided walking tours that highlight the area’s oldest and most interesting buildings, houses and landmarks. The Tuolumne County Historical Society offers an in-depth website highlighting significant events, historic landmarks and their list of the 21 Wonders of Tuolumne County. Visit their website at tchistory.org. History maps are available at the Tuolumne County Visitors Center in Sonora.

Me-Wuk Culture

In the language of the Me-Wuk Native American Indians, Tuolumne (pronounced too-all-ah-me) translates from the Me-Wuk language meaning “rushing river”. The Tuolumne Band of Me-Wuks holds special public events, celebrating tradition. The biggest event is the Annual Acorn Festival featuring the making of traditional Nupa (acorn soup), ceremonial dancing, native crafts and food. The Acorn Festival is held each September and celebrates the annual harvest of black oak acorns, a traditional staple of the Me-Wuk. The Tuolumne Band of Me-Wuk Indians has been a staunch supporter of education, athletics, and non-profit efforts in Tuolumne County. They own and operate Black Oak Casino Resort and Tuolumne Me-Wuk Health Clinic.

Gold Fever

Yes, there is still gold in those hills—and lots of it just waiting to be discovered! Word has it that during the Gold Rush only 30% of the Mother Lode’s gold riches were actually extracted. This could be the very reason gold prospecting has remained a popular year-round activity in Tuolumne County. Authentic gold panning adventures are available for enthusiasts of all ages. While gold prospecting requires no special skills or expensive equipment to get started, there are lessons available at Columbia State Historic Park and in Jamestown. Guided gold prospecting trips may also be arranged. Come try out this easy, fun and potentially very rewarding experience! 49’er Mining Supply: (209) 588-1635, page 32 Gold Prospecting Adventures & Store: (800) 596-0009, page 30 Hidden Treasure Gold Mine & Matelot Gulch Mine Supply Store: 532-9693, page 33 Photos: Jamestown Ore Cart: Lisa Mayo/TCVB; Curtin Mansion: Lisa Mayo/TCVB; MiWuk Tribal Dancers: Tuolumne MiWuk Tribal Council; Gold Prospecting Adventures: Lisa Mayo/TCVB

Lights, Camera, Action!

Tuolumne County is a magnet for film enthusiasts. Over 300 feature films, television shows and commercials have been made here. As early as 1919, filmmakers recognized the area as a valuable and convenient source of locations rich in diverse natural features and vintage architectural styles. They discovered that almost any type of scenery in the United States and beyond could be duplicated here. Movies and TV shows filmed here include: High Noon (Grace Kelly and Gary Cooper), Little House on the Prairie, Bonanza and Highway to Heaven (Michael Landon) The Red Pony (Henry Fonda and Maureen O’Hara), The Great Race (Jack Lemmon), The Big Valley (Barbara Stanwyck), Lassie (June Lockhart), Rawhide and Unforgiven (Clint Eastwood) and Back to the Future III (Michael J. Fox). Tuolumne County Film Commission: (209) 533-4420 • filmtuolumne.com

Two Film Festivals Tuolumne County is home to two film festivals: The ITSA Film Festival (November 13-15, 2015) is one of the hottest short film festivals in central California! Festival-goers can attend panels & workshops, watch films and meet industry professionals in Historic Downtown Sonora venues. Film Fest Twain Harte takes place on Labor Day Weekend and focuses on western-inspired productions.

Railtown 1897 State Historic Park, “The Movie Railroad” This State Park is home to one of the most photographed locomotives in the world, Sierra #3. Perhaps the most famous scene was pushing a DeLorean time machine down the tracks in Back to the Future III. Visit the movie memorabilia and photo room and see #3 on your visit to Railtown 1897.

Columbia State Historic Park Add a little dirt to the streets of Columbia and you’re back in the 1800’s. Meticulously preserved buildings have led to Columbia doubling as many cities of the 1800’s era including New York and Chicago. In the TV series, Little House on the Prairie, the town became Sleepy Eye, Minnesota and in the classic western, High Noon, it was known as Hadleyville. The Wilson-McConnell House in Columbia is where Marshall Will Kane (Gary Cooper) tries to recruit Sam Fuller (Henry Morgan, a.k.a. Colonel Sherman Potter in M*A*S*H*).

Donnell’s Vista: This rocky rest stop provides a breathtaking view of the Donnell Reservoir and the volcanic peaks known as the Dardanelles. This spot has been used for climactic scenes in many film and TV series including Lassie, Little House on the Prairie and Bonanza. Kennedy Meadows is another great filming location, just ten miles from Donnell’s Vista.

St. Joseph’s Catholic Church The St. Joseph’s Catholic Church is prominently displayed in High Noon and several others including Scudda Hoo! Scudda Hay! Other areas of Tuolumne City can be seen in several classic and “B” movie Westerns, including Silver City.

OR A TRUE Yosemite

adventure away from the crowds, head to Tuolumne Meadows for beginner to advanced level hikes. Lembert Dome is the choice for a big challenge with its 9,400 foot summit. An 8 miles RT hike with less cliffs and majestic scenery is the Cathedral Lakes. For a full day in the high country, my favorite place is the 14 mile RT hike to Vogelsang Lake where you’ll see some of the most spectacular vistas in Yosemite National Park. —John DeGrazio, YExplore Yosemite Adventures
