And with it, the risk to the nation’s collective health improves. Or does it? I suspect we just trade ‘flu and pneumonia for calamities suffered during our brief attempts to become proficient at some wholly unsuitable, and usually unsafe, outdoor pursuit, or at least a nasty case of sunburn. Glossing quickly over just how I came to be in need of medical assistance, and squeamishness notwithstanding, TL has decided to investigate advances in medical lighting technology, which in some instances, are truly remarkable, so prepare to be amazed on page 69. However, be warned - according to The Design Council, the lighting in Britain’s A&E departments is contributing, not to making us ill, but to making us violent, it seems. Apparently, the findings of a recent study into the behaviour of patients and their families while in the UK’s A&E departments, suggested that the harsh lighting to be found there was contributing to incidents of violence and aggression - putting aside the more obvious beer-soaked end-of-evening aggression, four-hour minimum waiting/bleeding time, and the discomfort of the injury that forced you to suffer such harsh lighting in the first place, one assumes? On a lighter note (sorry!), we’ve dared to lift the lid on the Pandora’s box that is domestic lighting technology this month (p32), and wow, you just won’t believe what we’ve discovered. From futuristic control systems using a biro, wristwatch or hair slide (OK then, a smartphone) that make Star Trek seem plausible, to 3D printed luminaires – I kid you not. I for one, cannot wait to go shopping for one – just as soon as my head stops spinning, and I work out where to get the ink ... Enjoy! Gill Anderson | editor

This is a wonderful opportunity to contribute to its success, get closer to our existing customers and develop new relationships.’ As part of its continuing commitment to its overseas markets, GlassGuard has appointed Eva Ordon to its customer liaison team. Ordon, who will be providing support to customers and the sales team, will be based in Thetford, Norfolk.

Delightful deadline Delight in Light, the LIA’s design competition is set to return for 2014, with the deadline for this year’s entries announced as 1 August 2014. Delight in Light was created by The Lighting Industry Association to encourage excellence in lighting design, which it believes is a mutually beneficial situation for all. Firstly for the lighting industry, which strives for excellence and the high quality design can provide; secondly for designers, through a closer liaison with the industry and exposure at high profile events, and thirdly, for the end users who will enjoy a better quality of lighting in their environment. With more than 70 designs submitted in 2013 and nearly 10,000 votes cast online, the ten finalists exhibited their designs at 100% design; where 600 visitors voted for their favourite design. The Winner of Delight in Light 2013 was Ash Allen, with an elegant and beautifully simple ceramic pendant design, called Dollop. The LIA team is strongly recommending that designers submit their creations for this year’s competition as early as possible, in order to give them more exposure to the voting public.

START UP UPSTART

This month we chat to a bright young star on the lighting scene, Greg Drzymalski

A

new company set up by Greg Drzymalski, and supported by the Prince’s Trust, is transforming disused motorcycle parts into high quality, individual table lamps. The business aims to take advantage of the current trend in home furnishing towards a retro look, by re-using or ‘upcycling’ precision-engineered motorcycle parts, which might otherwise have found their way onto the scrap heap. Drzymalski launched his lighting design company earlier this year after an accident put pay to his original plan to build custom motorcycles. As he explained: ‘Inspiration came while I was recovering from a series of operations, trying to save the sight in one of my eyes after an accident. ‘Originally, I had planned to build custom motorcycles, but the doctors put an end to that idea. I thought I would put my time off to good use and revisit an old idea for making furniture from used (motorcycle) parts. ‘While going through all the operations, I was in the market for a new table lamp, but couldn’t find anything that really stood out. The idea of making a lamp from what I had hanging around in the workshop came to me. And so the idea of making custom up-cycled lamps started.’ Drzymalski’s original business idea was already supported by the Prince’s Trust, so after his accident, he went back and pitched the lamp idea to them and, as he says: ‘they loved it.’ All of the designs are handmade in England, using local firms to help with the manufacture, and comply with relevant British safety standards.

Can you tell us a little about where and what you studied before going into business? GD: I never went out to design products; I just always seemed to end up designing for people - whether it was events or custom motorcycles! I studied Motorsport Management at Swansea Met and achieved a Bsc (Hons).

So, how did the idea of making light fittings from used motorcycle parts come about? GD: My original business plan was to make custom motorcycles, but within a week of getting a business loan from the Prince’s Trust, I lost the sight in one of my eyes. During the next two years, I went through nine operations. Doctors told me that I shouldn’t really be working on motorcycles. Having spare parts lying around the workshop led me to think I could do something a little different with them, and at the same time keep the custom side of the business. It was a lot easier to get people to help me make light fittings while I was recovering, than it would have been to get someone to build a motorcycle for me. It seems a strange way of getting into designing table lamps, but it’s worked out quite well!

How did you go about making sure you had the relevant safety knowledge to work on something electrical to sell? GD: I get help from a local company here in Worcestershire - Abbey Lighting.

They helped me a lot during the early stages, with finalising certain aspects of the design. They are still involved now, as all my designs are ‘PAT tested’ by them.

How do you go about making the table lamps; where do you work and what is involved in the manufacturing process? GD: I rent a workshop in the Worcestershire countryside where a lot of the concepts happen. My day job involves working for an aerospace company, which gives me access to a lot of machines that help me with the manufacturing process. When I get new parts, I will usually lay them out on the floor or on a table; I won’t necessarily come up with an idea straight away so I just keep waking past them until an idea comes into my head. Then the process to make the parts work together as a table lamp starts. If I am making a commissioned piece, then I will sketch a few ideas for the customer, or try and combine elements from a number of designs.

What parts of the bikes can – and can’t be used? Is there a limit to what you can produce, apart from your imagination? GD: You can use a lot of the engine internals. Some of the bigger parts on the motorcycle, such as the swing arm and frame, don’t make for good lamps. Classic motorcycles, especially British ones, are good to use, as aesthetically, they really are nicer than modern motorcycles.

It was a lot easier to get people to help me make lamps while I was recovering, than it would have been to get someone to build a motorcycle for me’

Where do you source the parts? GD: I mainly buy parts from the Internet and from a few selected scrap yards. Having a good relationship with local bike shops also helps, as they often donate parts they would otherwise scrap.

How did you first find out about The Prince’s Trust, and what has it done to help you? GD: I wasn’t working at the time, and a friend suggested I try the Prince’s Trust to see if they could help me get the business started. They gave me a loan to start everything off.

You have to write a business plan and then present it to a panel very similar to Dragon’s Den! Walking into the room was quite daunting’

They also assigned me a mentor, who is experienced in running a business. Having someone with lots of business experience – and someone to bounce ideas off has been very helpful. The Trust has been really patient with me while I was going through all the eye operations. It allowed me to keep loan repayments to a minimum; something I don’t think a bank would have done.

job is that it is a labour of love that I want to grow into a business. So I’m not sure it could be classed as a job….

How difficult was the process of getting the Trust on board with your re-invented business idea?

Can you envisage a time when you might branch out and start to design and make lighting from more traditional materials?

GD: It wasn’t too difficult. They seem to like ideas that are a little bit different from the norm. You have to write a business plan and then present it to a panel - very similar to Dragon’s Den! Walking into the room was quite daunting. The Trust does prepare you well for the presentation in front of the panel though.

GD: I have a few designs already using more traditional materials. At the moment I’m concentrating on the Up Cycled range. If I were approached to help design a lamp using traditional materials, then I would jump at the opportunity.

Is every lamp your produce a one-off, or have you created a series of designs using standard motorcycle parts?

GD: Currently I’m selling through the Internet (Etsy and Folksy) and a local gallery – Astwood Galleries, in Astwood Bank. Most of my lamps have been sold via work of mouth though.

GD: Not every lamp is a one off piece, no. Some lamps are very similar, as they use the same or similar parts, but the individuality comes from the fact that each piece can be tailored to the customer’s exact specification.

Do you take commissions for one-off bespoke pieces? GD: I do take commissions for one offs. Say a customer, who is a motorcycle enthusiast, has some parts laying around that they don’t need, they can be turned into a lamp. However, if someone else asked me to make a similar design, then I would, but I would always try and change it in some way to keep the individuality.

Where do you hope to see the business in five years’ time? And in ten? GD: Ideally, I would like to see my designs on the high street within five years, and have my own design studio and design team within ten.

So how do you advertise and sell your work at the moment?

Do you plan to expand your sales outlets – perhaps with a high street presence in time? GD: The plan is to get the designs onto the high street. It would be great to work with some high-end retailers.

If you could have one wish granted for your business, what would it be? GD: To have my designs sold on every continent.

What’s the most unusual design you’ve been asked to create so far? GD: I’ve just been commissioned to make two lamps for a customer’s two sons. One son is a tailor and the other is a chef - and he wanted a lamp to represent both jobs! I’m currently working on those; it should be interesting to see how they work. I never know exactly how well they will turn out until they are finished….

What light sources do you use – is there one standard that you find works, or does it depend on the finish of the lamp, the materials and/or the customer’s preference? GD: I’ve designed the fittings so they use the same light source. It makes it a lot easier when designing to have certain parts standard, and know they work. I am currently experimenting with LED strips just to give me a few more options with how I can use the parts.

Do you plan to grow the business, employing staff, or is this strictly a labour of love? GD: I would love to grow the business and employ staff. The great thing about this

HIGHLIGHT Channel hopping Megaman has announced a partnership with SED Lighting, in a move, which will see SED become the official distributor of Megaman products throughout France. As the official distribution partner, SED Lighting will play a key role in growing Megaman’s range of energy saving LED lamp technology in France and the wider EU market. Well recognised for its association with Venture HID lamps, SED Lighting is perfectly placed to market the company’s LED products to an existing audience of technical wholesalers, project installers, specifiers, retailers, designers and architects. Stéphane Dubois of SED Lighting commented: ‘There is a tremendous opportunity for growth as the official distributor for Megaman in France: 80 per cent of lighting sales this year are expected to come from LEDs and 70 per cent of growth is set to come from volume sales.’

Moving on up Thomas Research Products has announced a move to a larger headquarters and distribution facility. The company says the key benefit for customers will be the expanded warehouse and shipping areas, which allow for increased volume and efficiency. TRP already maintains a large product inventory of one of the most comprehensive LED driver product lines available in North America. The new 48,000sq ft facility in Elgin, Illinois allows for even greater stocking levels. The building will also function as a showcase: the production and warehouse

areas feature advanced LED lighting powered by TRP’s drivers, which customers are invited to visit to see the systems in action for themselves. The company’s engineering, quality testing labs, and manufacturing capabilities have also been increased in the move. Glenn Garbowicz, TRP general manager, said: ‘We’re excited that this move helps us to better serve our dynamic and diverse customer base, as we continue growing faster than the market, especially with our recent introductions in the AC, as well as standard DC, LED light engine arenas.’

Anniversary celebrations 25 years after it was founded, Zeta Specialist Lighting is celebrating its anniversary with a £3.5m investment to support plans to achieve a five-fold increase in size within three years.

A significant chunk of the money will be spent upgrading the Bicester head office. Zeta is increasing its light guide panel production capability and creating a dedicated R&D centre. This will ensure that much of the production currently carried out in the Far East is brought back to the UK; a move that the company believes will deliver a tangible competitive edge. The investment will also speed up production across the board, ensuring Zeta fulfils customer orders faster. Managing director, Phil Shadbolt said: ‘25 years in business is a tremendous milestone, and is testament to the commitment of both our staff and our customers. I attribute that success to our heritage of innovation, which still guides us in everything we do. ‘The business has continued to move forward. We have established a strong presence within commercial, retail and industrial settings, and with this investment, the business will be in a position to focus on developing the products of the future, expand into new sectors and new markets.’ To facilitate future product development and expansion into new markets, the company has increased its headcount; recruiting an additional nine staff across its customer service, marketing, sales and production departments, as well as appointing a new management accountant and technical lighting designer. ‘With our continued focus on innovation, we have an exciting future ahead. We are looking forward to the next 25 years and beyond,’ concluded Shadbolt.

Green fingers Having just wrapped up an $8.2m funding round to attract new investment to the company, Texas-based LED lighting manufacturer, Illumitex has partnered with Canadian greenhouse manufacturer, GGS Structures. The strategic alliance between the two companies combines innovative

horticultural lighting with a greenhouse industry giant. The new team will provide complete growing solutions to all horticulture markets including vegetable, flower and medicinal cannabis in both greenhouse and controlled environment agriculture applications. ‘Illumitex could not be more

excited to partner with a company that has the integrity, reputation and proven track record that GGS has,’ noted Eric Anderson, VP of business development at Illumitex. ‘GGS has been an industry leader in the greenhouse and plant growth market for many years.’ The company has created

LED lighting that emits highly uniform and precise illumination directly from the source to the plant canopy. With die-level optical integration, inefficient secondary optics to control the light are unnecessary, opening the world of horticulture lighting to more versatile and energy efficient options.

‘We know that LED is the future of horticultural lighting, whether it is sole-sourced or supplemental, and we have seen everything on the market. Nothing we have seen can compare to the performance and plant growth expertise that Illumitex is offering to the plant growth industry,’ said Gerry Harrison of GGS.

lobally it seems, we are suffering from price hikes in energy costs, and that goes for you, for me, and for everyone else – business users and individuals alike. So it comes as no surprise to hear that many of our religious institutions are looking for ways to cut the cost of lighting their ecclesiastical portfolio, while at the same time, trying to do their bit for the environment. However, it’s not always a simple task; often the buildings are extremely old, sometimes decrepit, lighting is sited high in inaccessible vaulted ceiling voids – and that’s before you consider the multiple uses many religious buildings are now put to and their varying needs. Trying to please everyone can, as we all know, be a bit of a minefield.

DRAPED IN COLOUR

Technical Stage Services has been helping to transform a plain, hall-like church in Derby so that it can be hired out during the week for conferences, as an additional source of

revenue. By installing drapes around the walls, which are washed with 20 Chauvet DJ SlimPAR Tri 12 IRC, managing director, Dan Dawson and his team have created a beautiful and versatile space, complete with vibrant colour changing facilities, no matter what the event. For additional drama, eight Chauvet Professional Legend 412 moving heads were also installed. A more traditional church building, St Mary the Virgin in Cottingham, Yorkshire, which dates from 1320, has also undergone a recent lighting upgrade as part of a wider restoration project. The previous lighting scheme was felt to be inflexible, unsympathetic to its surroundings, expensive to run and almost impossible to access and maintain. Time then, for change. Churchwarden, Ruth Marsden explained: ‘We wanted a lighting design that made the most of our beautiful medieval setting, lighting the whole building, so all pews and aisles could be used, www.tlmagazine.co.uk • J U N E 2 0 1 4 • 21

blended into the stonework and could be supported on our existing wiring. Various units were suggested by the architect, but once we had found Concord, we were immediately impressed by the sympathetic understanding of our situation. Money was very tight here, so we needed real value, reliability and on-going support during commissioning after installation.’ The successful solution has been built around the company’s Beacon LED High Output on Lytespan track. The Beacon is a high efficiency LED spotlight with a cuttingedge cooling fin design to maximise thermal management and reduction of LED junction temperature. An important consideration when lighting historic buildings is the potentially damaging IR and UV levels. The Beacon is an IR/UV-free light source without heat radiation, so ideal for the church environment. ‘The lights did all that we hoped,’ continued Marsden. ‘They were easy to install, and wholly transformed the high spaces of our church, revealing details, vistas and features that had been unseen and unappreciated for decades. The light was soft but clear, creating the ambience that ideally suits the church. ‘We used the new system for some weeks and then wanted to make small alterations to the direction of light and the clustering of a few luminaires, and this proved very easy. ‘The lights have transformed our use of the church. The sacred spaces have been highlighted and the roof is illuminated, revealing the flying gold angels that we barely saw before. We can invite visiting choirs and performers with confidence, book weddings without qualms, and arrange special services in the winter months, certain that all will be well. St Mary’s has moved into the 21st Century!’

Craig Lewis, managing director at Novah, the manufacturer of AVA lighting products, has been busy working with the team at a large synagogue in Manchester to supply and install LED lighting in the study area, known as the Bet Hamikdash. Lighting in the space is in use for an average of 15 hours a day, so when the charity, which owns and runs the synagogue, needed to find a way to reduce costs, it looked to the lighting. By changing from fluorescent tubes to LED replacements, the associated energy costs have fallen by 70 per cent. As soon as the replacement lamps were installed, there was a noticeable difference in the light quality, and the 22 • J U N E 2 0 1 4 • www.tlmagazine.co.uk

No maintenance required at the point of output, so light heads can be mounted at very high positions’ general feeling was of a great improvement: more light, evenly distributed and a good colour rendition compared to the previous lighting. One regular user of the Bet Hamikdash commented: ‘This makes the text on the pages stand out more clearly, and is easier to read!’ Since the initial upgrade, the management committee has been working to upgrade the remainder of the synagogue as quickly as possible in an effort to continue the feel-good factor; in terms of both the light quality and the understanding that the synagogue is reducing its energy consumption – both in terms of the environment and running costs. In total, upgrade will replace 150 fittings with LED alternatives, including a mixture of LED T8, MR16s, LED panels and external floods for increased security.

Of course, LED isn’t the only cost effective light source that should be considered for ecclesiastical surroundings, where lighting needs to be safe as well as user-friendly, and issues of maintenance and energy consumption are increasingly important. ‘Glass fibre optic lighting uniquely satisfies so many of these considerations,’ suggests Emma Dawson-Tarr of Absolute Action. ‘With a lamp at source positioned remotely, the lighting itself is completely passive, free from any electrical current, heat or UV emissions; no maintenance is required at the point of output, so that light heads can be mounted at very high positions - or even integrated into the fabric of the structure. Beautiful quality lighting can be delivered from multiple heads across a substantial area from a single source; and the component elements of glass and metal will endure as long as the building itself. ‘Fibre optic lighting thus provides the perfect long term solution for the needs

of both the conservation and spiritually minded, and its cost-effectiveness means that more of each institutions’ precious funds can be directed towards preserving the beauty of their fragile features. At St David’s Cathedral in Pembrokeshire, Absolute Action designed and installed fibre optic lighting to highlight the beauty of the ancient and ornate artwork behind the choir stalls. Its safety, effectiveness and longevity as a light source is perfectly illustrated at Lincoln Cathedral, where the company’s original installation, which included a 0-10v dimmer system in St Hugh’s choir, the rear stalls and the music stands, along with two emergency fibre optic lighting systems, took place in 1998. ‘The main consideration was keeping heat sources away from the delicate dry woodwork of the carving on the canon stalls,’ explained Dawson-Tarr. ‘This was achieved by installing two fibre optic cables into each of the 70 stalls, and the seven light generators mounted away from the flammable woodwork. ‘Plaques dedicated to the various deaneries, in gold leaf on the back of each choir stall, are highlighted by one of the fibre optic cables; the other provides light directly onto the canon’s hymn book.’ Finally, slender fibre optics were integrated into the bespoke candle sconces to provide cool and practical illumination to the choir’s music books. In all applications, minimal intrusion into the fabric of the building, combined with the facility to customise and miniaturise light fixtures, makes the lighting discreet and unobtrusive. Dawson-Tarr makes the point that ‘since the 1998 installation, all that has needed replacing are consumable elements, such as lamps, fans and dust filters every few years’. The main installation of fibre and lenses is as perfect now as it was 16 years ago.’

F

lightcase and loudspeaker component manufacturer and steel fabricator, Penn Elcom has converted all the lighting fixtures at its Sussex factory and offices to energy efficient, low carbon LED light sources, which have been supplied by local firm, CLD Distribution. The switch from metal halide to LED technology at the plant is already saving Penn Elcom 70 per cent on its ongoing electricity running costs based on a 253-day working year, with the production lines running 24-hours a day. Penn, which distributes its products worldwide, was using 272,025 Kilowatt Hours (KWH) of electricity before the new installation, a figure that’s now dramatically reduced to 68,006 KWH, representing a saving of £18,000 a year, and nearly 100 tonnes of carbon. Lamp specialist, CLD Distribution offers a comprehensive and innovative range of high quality architectural, commercial and industrial LED light sources aimed at installations in multiple sectors, including factories like Penn’s. The company has collaborated closely with Osram for several years to produce superior light sources, and has a specialist team of LED consultants on hand to assess and assist with organisations wanting to increase the energy efficiency

of their operations and reduce their carbon footprint. Penn Elcom approached CLD to advise on the solution, which has brought many other benefits, including a better quality of working light, and a massive decrease in long-term running costs. The new LED installation is the extension of a wider energy reduction scheme at Penn Elcom being implemented by chairman, Roger Willems. ‘I am absolutely delighted with the results of the new lighting scheme,’ he enthused. ‘It is important for businesses to improve their sustainability. Apart from the great value this also brings, my staff can all benefit from increased light levels - in some areas by 250 per cent due to the output of the LEDs – and a far greater quality of light in their working environments.’ With a colour temperature of 6000-6500K, the new LED sources provide a natural daylight hue that is proving far more comfortable than the metal halide sources. Rob Platt, MD of CLD Distribution commented: ‘Penn Elcom wanted to reduce its energy consumption and continue providing good working light levels, and it was extremely satisfying to be able to help them achieve both these goals.’ The majority of the new light sources installed at Penn Elcom are from CLD’s 100W High Bay LED range. They offer an easy-maintenance, leadand mercury-free option, are retro-fittable for quick and easy installation, and are a direct replacement for metal halide and sodium high bays in the same style. They have an instant start/stop and are manufactured using Osram LEDs and a custom heat sink. The High Bays are shock- and vibrationresistant with a CRI of 75Ra. HIGHLIGHT On the Edge Cree has announced European availability of its Edge High Output (HO) LED series. Featuring TrueWhite technology, the Edge HO delivers up to 90 CRI color quality, with 5.000K illumination. Available for the first time in Europe, it is designed to illuminate large outdoor areas with brilliant and focused light of up to 75,000 lumens – ideal for commercial and industrial applications, sports facilities, harbours and airports. The new luminaire is covered by Cree’s 10-year limited warranty. According to the company, the Edge HO Series represents the ideal replacement for outdated high intensity discharge (HID) luminaires of up to 2,000 watts. Compared to the lighting it replaces, Cree Edge HO LED luminaires maintain consistent, high-quality light output while reducing energy usage up to

70 percent. The new series features multiple optics, to support optimal illumination across applications. ‘Cree engineered the revolutionary Edge HO luminaire as a no-compromise, high-output LED solution – significantly reducing energy and maintenance costs while improving illumination performance for outdoor applications,’ explained Massimo Targetti, managing director, Cree Europe. Featuring the company’s NanoOptic technology, the Edge HO luminaire is designed to precisely distribute light where it is wanted. In addition, exceptional thermal management enhances reliability and contributes to a system that can provide more than a decade of near maintenance-free service – eliminating expensive re-lamping cycles.

An app for that Osram’s LLFY Selector app has been designed to aid customers’ finding products. If customers have questions about products for their specific LED lighting solutions, they can either go to the LLFY website or now they can use the free app to find products on the move. With just a few clicks they can select the most important criteria to find the partner product that is right for them, access image material and enquire about the necessary components directly through an appropriate sales channel. So far, the LLFY Selector app contains lenses, reflectors, LED modules, power supplies and heat sinks; Osram says it will be expanded step by step in the near future, with the addition of more product categories. The app can be used on smartphones and tablets with iOS or Android operating systems.

Variety is the spice... LCC has launched Vario by Zenaro, a new series of industrial and outdoor LED luminaires based on a modular light engine design. Up to seven Vario light engines in 14 wattages can be assembled to packages with outputs from 20W to 250W. The basic module is available in six different optics. According to the customer’s specifications in terms of performance and light distribution, the desired combination of modules is then installed in one of four selectable light heads. The luminaire body only acts as a mount because the Vario light engine modules are autonomous, IP65compliant lighting components with built-in/integrated cooling. Appropriately configured, Vario luminaires can be used as street lights, parking lamps, downlights (for service stations), highbays, and floodlights. According to the manufacturer, the modular construction significantly reduces design and manufacturing costs, which has a positive impact on the market price. Due to its modular scalability, a Vario luminaire can simply be up-scaled to meet changing requirements by interchanging the modules. The four models currently available are: Vario-CL, -FL, -PL and -SL. They have rated currents of 2,200 to 23,750 lumens and are offered in three colour temperatures, from cool to warm white. Optionally, they are dimmable to 1-10V. The luminaires are designed for operating temperatures between -20°C and +40°C. Vario-CL is a canopy light, particularly suitable for industrial halls, canopies, high-bay warehouses and parking garages, while FL aims at façade, car park and industrial illumination. Vario-PL and -SL excellently cover streets, pavements and cycle paths, as well as public spaces, in addition to car parks and industrial sites.

Jumbo Finnish line Scandinavia’s biggest implementation of LED tubes has been completed in Vantaa, Finland as outdated tubes were replaced with an energy efficient alternative at the Jumbo Shopping Centre’s vast car park. There are now around 6,000 LED tubes lighting the parking area, as well as the store’s maintenance and technical facilities. This quantity makes Jumbo the biggest individual installation of LED tubes in

Scandinavia, as well as one of the biggest sites in Finland to switch to LED lighting to date. The total electric power of the supermarket’s LED tubes is around 140 kW, but compared to the 400 kW used by the earlier fluorescent tubes, the savings are huge. One of the old tubes and its ballasts used 72 watts according to measurements taken prior to the refit, whereas the updated tubes use 24 watts, with no loss in light quality.

‘Our basic premise was energy efficient, long life, and easily maintained lighting, and we did compare the LED tubes of various suppliers before choosing the products of the Finnish Valtavalo,’ said Hannu Hirvonen, facilities manager at Jumbo Shopping Centre in Vantaa. The previous ballasts were always breaking which, according to Hirvonen, caused substantial maintenance costs as well as a fire risk.

‘With the LED tubes, the lights are easy and cheap to maintain and the long life of the tubes increases significantly the time between maintenance actions. As there are no separate ballasts or inductors, a simple changing of the tube at the end of its life cycle is all there is to do in practice,’ he explained. Jyty-Sähkö Oy carried out the LED installation. ‘At Jumbo, we decided to use the old lighting bodies as they were

still in pretty good condition,’ explained Jari Tykkyläinen, MD of Jyty-Sähkö. According to Valtavalo CEO, Markku Laatikainen, the car park is a good work reference for the company, nationally and internationally. ‘There are not many lighting locations on this scale in Finland and Jumbo is one of the first that has realised the maintenance benefits of LED tubes when compared to actual LED lights,’ he said.

Domestic bliss I

Trends for the home lighting market have never been so exciting

t isn’t just business users who’ve caught on to the whole energy saving way of lighting. Domestic consumers too want to make savings, and if they can get the fittings they want with the light quality and output they are used to, they’ll be much more open to making changes to their current situation. ‘Ideally,’ suggests Michael Linsky of Sensio, ‘lighting should be considered during the initial stages of the design process, as it has the ability to really impact on the space in terms of both aesthetics and functionality. ‘A mixture of task and mood lighting solutions should be incorporated into every area of the home, whether it’s the kitchen, bedroom, bathroom or living areas. By including a combination of the two, homeowners can ensure that the room functions to the best of its abilities and in addition, they can also create whichever mood they desire.’ Phillip Pini at Creston says: ‘LED lighting is an important advancement in lighting for the home, and is rapidly becoming the standard for new builds and renovations. ‘You can now achieve a much better quality of light and varying colour temperatures with LED over traditional light sources. By using lighting control, you can also reduce the amount of energy that is wasted lighting unoccupied spaces, as well as being able to create decorative, interesting scenes that change throughout the day.’

THE POWER TO SAVE

And with the increase in accessible, trendy home control systems accessed via apps, there’s nothing to stop us all re-thinking our domestic lighting strategy. Smart controls are big news: Philips came first with hue – amazing us with the power to control lighting using our smartphones. Now the company has created hue lux, a bright white-only version, which is fully compatible with the range of hue apps and hardware, and provides quality, functional white light for everyday living with perfect digital dimming control. Hue lux uses the same ‘backbone’ as the rest of the hue eco-system, so users can dim, or even synch their lighting to music. It’s also compatible with hue control devices, such as the jawbone bracelet, which detects when users wake in the morning. ‘Hue lux is another entry point for people who are ready for the connected home,’ commented Filip Jan Depauw, senior director at Philips Lighting. ‘It offers personal wireless functional lighting, giving users perfect control over their homes by re-inventing the dimmer switch and giving you control via an array of apps. Once you have the kit, your connected lighting experience is completely scalable: you can add any hue-compatible product to any room in your home.’

Osram too has launched a smartphonefriendly lighting control system. Using an app, Lightify integrates into existing WLAN networks, allowing users to set a wide diversity of light atmospheres. ‘Connected light is yet another important step for us towards the digital light era,’ explained Peter Laier, Osram’s CTO. ‘With Lightify we have transformed an idea into an innovation that contains almost everything that light is able to do today.’ Lightify enables living spaces, as well as balconies and gardens to be bathed in a wide variety of light atmospheres, controlled via smartphone or tablet. Scenes can be freely configured and controlled on the move, and the app provides pre-programmed scenes, such as a realistic sunrise. Osram believes that while Lightify can design rooms in light differently each day, the light itself can also be useful for our wellbeing; the right scene helps people to get out of bed better in the morning and to sleep more easily at the end of the day. So, is the average homeowner going to be able to make it all work? Well, the home version is designed with no installation knowhow required, using plug´n play as a guiding principle. All that’s needed is the Lightify Gateway, lamps and luminaires, plus the downloadable app.

A mixture of task and mood lighting solutions should be incorporated into every area of the home’

SENSORY OVERLOAD

And of course, we need to consider sensory controls. Creston’s Pini explains: ‘When LED controls are integrated with sensory controls, you can create a daylight harvesting solution that automatically optimises light levels throughout the day with no adverse impact on the comfort of users within the room. Ideally, dimming with LEDs provides an incandescent-like performance such smoothly dimming down to the lowest possible spec without any flickering. Dimmers should also allow for shifts in colour temperature enhance ambiance and user comfort.’ For retrofits, particularly where re-wiring isn’t an option, technology such as EnOcean’s energy harvesting wireless switch module is ideally suited for the control of LED lighting systems. The wireless, self-powered switch module converts the motion of a finger press into energy for a wireless signal that controls the lighting. Users can simply adjust the lighting to their individual preference by a finger tap. The wireless switch can be placed anywhere; on the

wall beside the bed, by the dining table, or it can be used as a mobile remote control for flexible use anywhere in the house.

PROJECTED PLEASURE

A multi-million pound penthouse in central London has been transformed following a total redesign and refurbishment project that includes a freestanding bath tub in the guest room with three fibre optic chandeliers suspended above. The effect of floating orbs of light above the tub is stunning - and they change colour too. ‘With the guest room, it was essential to create a wow factor; I needed to incorporate some lighting in the centre of the room that had a relationship with the bath,’ explained Stephen Dick of Residence Interior Design. ‘This is just not possible with conventional lighting because of the building regulations and associated dangers, and in this case, 4.5-metre high ceilings. This is when I realised a fibre-optic lighting design would be the solution.’ To bring his vision to life, Crescent Lighting specified and supplied custom designed La Luna fibre optic chandeliers, www.tlmagazine.co.uk • J U N E 2 0 1 4 • 33

LIGHT FOR ART

TM Lighting, is the brainchild of exciting design duo, Andrew Molyneux and Harry Triggs designs and manufactured LED lighting products for the art world. Rooted in its passion for the arts and coupled with a desire to innovate, the company carefully balances consideration for history and aesthetics with the present day lighting requirements of its international client base. ‘As homeowners are increasingly aware of the advantages of light quality, they are more willing to invest in higher quality lights, which are more economically efficient over a period of time,’ explained Molyneux. The company has noticed the trend for lighting art within a space is integral to a whole rooms lighting design and atmosphere. As a result, we have noticed

an increase in demand from clients whose focus is on lighting the artwork, and then creating the rest of the scheme to suit. ‘The global art market is on the increase, and worth in excess of $66billion,’ said Triggs. ‘Art buyers are becoming more discerning about the way they collect art, and the way in which they light their collections. We are increasingly experiencing clients requesting museumgrade lighting to display their works of art. A blob of light, which lights the frame and the wall above the painting will no longer cut the mustard - as with traditional picture lights, which use a linear tungsten bulb. ‘The best in lighting technology, once only available to the top galleries, is now available to the discerning art collector.’ It seems that there is a trend towards lighting art in its true light and respecting the environment of a beautiful piece of art too. If the art is lit well, then it creates great dramatic effect and atmosphere. ‘For example,’ said Triggs, ‘we recently lit our largest canvas (three-metres high) in a privately owned castle. The lighting scheme there brought out the true quality of the work whilst bringing warmth to the living spaces. ‘When lighting a room, if you

Sensio’s Michael Linsky says: ‘Bedrooms are multi-functional spaces in which to relax and unwind, but are also rooms where daily rituals occur, such as getting dressed. In order to ensure the space can function to the best of its abilities, it’s important to think through the lighting that features in the design scheme. The space needs to not only be aesthetically pleasing, but practical too. ‘A bedroom should contain a mix of mood and task lighting in order to function effectively. An LED strip light positioned underneath the bed will add depth to the room and create atmosphere, whereas convenience lighting placed within wardrobes and cabinets will illuminate clothes and accessories. ‘LEDs are most certainly the future when it comes to lighting the home, replacing out-dated halogen alternatives as solutions, which are energy efficient, cost effective and of course, last longer.’ So, what to watch for next? Philips has again moved the goalposts – and created a danger of my head actually exploding - with the launch of 3D printed smart luminaires. Fusing the worlds of light, art and technology, the luminaires, designed by WertelOberfell and Strand+Hvass, will allow truly limitless lighting effects for domestic users - Wow!

Home help

For a potential homeowner, a due-diligence survey of the new build’s AV infrastructure threw up a surprise

W

hile most potential homeowners would be concerned with furnishings for a new home, the soon-to-be owners of a luxury new build property in Kent were more interested in the AV system. And with good cause, it seems. Following the results of the survey, it became apparent that the developer had created a multi-million pound luxury home - that needed an AV upgrade from day one! Hesitant to chase cabling into a new property, Imagine This decided to use Lutron’s wireless HomeWorks QS light control solution, with stunning results. Guy Singleton, managing director at Imagine This explained further: ‘When we were asked to provide due diligence for an existing client on a property they were considering purchasing, we didn’t think that the house would need a lot of extra work, as it was a new build. ‘However, following the survey, we realised that the electronic systems and infrastructure cabling were nowhere near sufficient to support the needs of this luxury family home,’ he said. ‘The lighting system that the developer had installed was from a branded manufacturer, but it was a low-end hybrid of conventional and wireless controls, and offered a restricted control solution. We recommended that the best system to meet the lighting control requirements of a home of this stature, was Lutron’s whole-home solution, HomeWorks QS.’

COLLATERAL DAMAGE

The limitations of the existing installation meant that the wireless capabilities of the QS system were essential to the project’s success. Thanks to its robust, wireless Clear Connect RF technology, the interior light sources, keypads and blinds controls that did not have

existing, or sufficient cabling, were incorporated into the new system, with no disturbance to the fabric of the building. A Lutron HomeWorks QS processor was installed on the ground floor of the property, and wired to one repeater with three others connected wirelessly throughout the house. By linking the processor to wireless access points, there was no damage to the walls or need for Cat5 cabling runs. In fact, thanks to the wireless connectivity of the whole home solution, the owners of the property were able to stay in the house while the installation was being carried out. Six wireless Lutron GRAFIK Eye QS and integrated keypads were then connected throughout the house, creating fourteen different control points, from which to wirelessly manage the 96 circuits. In addition, 33 Pico wireless keypad controllers were fitted, to enable a wide range of pre-programmed scenes to be accessed. By using multiple wireless repeaters and keypads where necessary, new wiring was kept to a minimum. Singleton commented: ‘We built bespoke lighting panels housing Lutron din-rail mounted dimming modules, with all the relevant protection, such as RCCBO’s and

MCB’s. These were created remotely in our workshop and shipped to site, ready to hang on the wall where the original dimming PAK’s had been mounted. Thanks to the inclusion of wireless access points and Lutron’s Pico wireless keypads we knew we could address the existing keypad limitation issues with minimum difficulties.’

LIGHTENING THE LOAD Alongside the original system’s restricted control options, the due diligence survey showed that the light sources used by the developer created a very high load output. So as well as bringing in a more intuitive light control solution, Imagine This decided to address the high load levels by replacing the existing light sources with LED lamp technology. Singleton explained: ‘LED, as a source is fine for home lighting, as long as a warm colour temperature is selected (about 2700k) with a colourrendering index of about 81. ‘Dimming LEDs is often troublesome, but the Lutron system performed excellently, and with a wide range of 0-10v and other dimming modules available, allowed us to smoothly dim our circuits, without flicker or a sudden drop to zero. ‘We also used a method to extract the energy usage from the lighting system via additional current transformers built into our bespoke lighting panel. These allowed us to ascertain the exact energy usage from the system and relay that information on to a touch panel or PC, where the client could use the data to help control energy use. We also took into consideration

imposed electrical load - how the lighting system affects energy usage throughout the house. A case in point is the forced cooling (AC), which has to work harder to dissipate the heat generated by higher lighting loads. So the energy savings created by selecting LED sources go far beyond that of the most obvious instant lamp power requirements.’ Although cost savings might not have been the primary motivator on this luxury installation, by switching to LED light sources and dimming control, pre- and post-load monitoring has shown that the home owners look set to achieve cost savings of around 60 per cent on the existing installation’s energy usage. As well as upgrading the home’s control solution, Imagine This was also able to integrate the existing blind controls into the new system. Lutron’s QS 4 Motor Zone control modules were used, to enable the existing motorised blinds to be incorporated into the upgraded solution. As a result, ground and upper floor natural daylight control has been integrated into the wholehome control system. Singleton concluded: ‘This project was unusual in that it was both a new build, and retrofit installation, incorporating both wired and wireless solutions. ‘The result is a lighting control system that allows the client all of the features associated with Lutron, such as, astronomical time clocks, security features, vacation modes and energy efficiency, yet has not required any disturbance to the fabric of the house. ‘This was facilitated mainly by the flexibility of the Lutron system, that allowed us to think outside the box.’

ED lighting is now mainstream – the revolution is over. Predictions are that LED will be the dominant lighting technology by 2020. But with so much new technology on the market, how do you separate the good from the bad? The LED lighting industry is still relatively immature, and there are horror stories aplenty regarding poor light quality and the reliability of fittings. If selecting LED technology, care needs to be taken to ensure high quality and high reliability products are installed. In many cases, customers don’t fully understand the technology they’re buying, and end up not getting the lighting solution that they actually wanted. Whether the discussions were based on price or the promises of the salesman, the end result is disappointment. I’m afraid with LED lighting, you often get what you pay for, and people should be more concerned about payback periods as opposed to the initial up front cost of the lighting scheme. Lighting buyers want to be educated - but only to a point. They want to have a basic understanding of the technology without having to become a lighting expert. And why should they? You don’t have to be an expert in automotive technology to buy a decent car!

INDUSTRY REGULATION

New technologies require new standards and testing benchmarks. Buyers want to be able to confidently purchase a solution that works well for them and does ‘what it says on the tin’.

What is desperately needed is industry regulation, a standard or kite mark that proves that a product has been independently tested and qualified. But until there is a formal industry standard, then buyers must ask the supplier for all relevant documentation. The benefits of LED technology are completely dependent upon longevity in the fitting. And longevity in a LED light engine is completely dependent upon three crucial factors: · The LED itself · Thermal management of the junction temperature · The driver Responsible LED lighting suppliers will have independent test data for each of those factors - as well as photometric data, CE marking and IP-rating certification, TM 21 reports and

Customers don’t fully understand the technology they’re buying, and end up not getting the lighting solution that they actually wanted’ LM 80 reliability data. They will also be happy to share case studies with you and should provide reference sites for you to visit. If they can’t supply the necessary independent test data - then don’t buy from them!

WHY REGULATE?

The above said, there is still a lot of inconsistency in the way different customers present their data, which makes it extremely difficult for even the lighting experts to compare products accurately. From an industry

perspective, standards and regulations will provide a platform for consistent language in regard to definitions, test methods, laboratory accreditation and for product design, manufacturing and testing. This can only help the buyer compare products accurately and make informed choices.

DON’T BE PUT OFF – LED IS THE FUTURE

The problem for reputable LED lighting manufacturers is that often, lighting buyers have already had a bad experience buying LED lighting, and are naturally reluctant to consider it again. What they don’t realise is there is a huge gulf in the quality of different LED lighting solutions out there - and a good LED solution in almost all instances will outperform others. What I can say for certain is that there are now an ever-growing number of very professional LED lighting manufacturers and suppliers, who are working hard to create industry standards. They have also been working hard to publicise how far the industry has come, and put distance between themselves and the ‘pile it high, sell it cheap’ manufacturers, who seem to care little for the quality or longevity of their fittings. Seeds of change

Chris Horridge, managing director of Lancashire-based Downlights Direct discusses Earth Hour and the impact of lighting on our collective carbon footprint

E

arth Hour is more than just a global statement – it is about altering our energy habits. On March 29 2014, at 8.30pm, the world was plunged into darkness for the WWF’s global Earth Hour movement. Hundreds of millions of people around the world across 7,000 cities and 154 countries and territories took part, according to the WWF, to highlight climate change. This year a crowd-sourced initiative has been designed to help with humanitarian efforts around the world, called Earth Hour Blue. The movement has become much more than just turning off the world’s lights for an hour. It offers a dramatic, united and symbolic gesture towards our collective effort to help save the environment. Global campaigns like Earth Hour open discussions on our own energy efficiency, and throw light on the small steps we can all take to become more eco-friendly. Many consumers are still fumbling in the dark when it comes to taking simple steps to improving their carbon footprints, particularly around the home. As a supporter and salesperson of LEDs I am often faced with customers unaware of the benefits open to them by simply switching to an alternative light source like LEDs. For many, changing to LEDs seems like too much of an expense, and trying to explain the benefits to the environment often comes

Earth Hour highlights our dependency on lighting to such an extent that seeing Times Square, the Forth Bridge, or Piccadilly Circus in complete darkness still strikes people as a strange and eerie sight’

second place in people’s minds to the initial cost. But it is true that LEDs are statistically proven to save the consumer more money in the long term, when compared to other ‘energy saving’ bulbs, which have recently saturated the market. According to the Energy Savings Trust, replacing a halogen spotlight with the equivalent LED saves around £4 a year - or £140 over the bulb’s lifetime. Based on an average use of six hours a day, an LED can last for 34 years, which more than makes up for the initial cost. The reason LEDs are so expensive is directly related to this fact. Because of their longer life span, high quality LEDs are not mass produced, and are therefore more exclusive. LEDs from unbranded, distrusted sources are now clouding the marketplace and fooling the consumer, but I would always recommend opting for a known and proven brand – for example Philips, Aurora, Halers – at least then you will have a guarantee of its quality. LEDs are also better for the environment as they contain no mercury, unlike other compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs). Nowadays, the mercury in CFLs and fluorescent strip lights is significantly less than it used to be, but it still makes disposing of them an arduous task. It’s true that, as a society, we can’t function without lights. Earth Hour highlights our dependency on lighting to such an extent that seeing Times Square, the Forth Bridge or Piccadilly Circus in complete darkness still strikes people as a strange and eerie sight. People taking part in this year’s Earth Hour should see it as a way of re-thinking their own energy usage, and take steps to improve their own efficiency. Cutting down our carbon footprint involves altering our daily habits, but it is a small price to pay to help the environment. Switching to LED lighting is an easy and effective way to start this journey. C O N T A C T Downlights Direct www.downlightsdirect.co.uk

HIGHLIGHT Reloaded

Reloaded - an installation by Martino Berghinz, at the Università degli Studi di Milano,Via Festa del Perdono, 7 Milan. By the main entrance to the University of Milan, Oluce and Martino Berghinz presented an installation that used lamps from the collection to create original new creations inspired by nature’s archetypal conformations. The display consisted of two standing works in white, and two copper-coloured suspended ones. In the first case, Vico Magistretti’s Atollo lamps were brought together to form the atoms of a molecular structure, while the geometric shapes of Magistretti’s Pascal lamps created a plane of light where functionality and symbolism merged together. ‘The project was completed with two suspension installations that contained an LED source: Kin by Francesco Rota called to mind the traditional shape of a chandelier and created three concentric circles on different levels, while Lys by AngelettiRuzza used the elegant design of the bluebell-shaped head to develop a descending spiral. ‘Energy domesticated by design inspiration, contained within sophisticated items of furniture capable of illuminating unexpected creative journeys,’ said Berghinz.

Dramatic changes

Stage Electrics has delivered lighting and AV to Milton Court, Guildhall School of Music and Drama’s state-of-the-art facility in Silk Street. The school wanted to update and future-proof it’s site. The result is a venue which houses three rehearsal rooms, TV studio, 227-seat theatre and a 608-seat, concert hall. Stage Electrics supplied, installed and commissioned the lighting, audio and video

infrastructure venue-wide, which includes dimmer racks, data distribution, paging and show relay, plus custom-manufactured stage management desks, facility panels, lighting bars, ‘raceways’ and loose equipment. The company equipped both studio and theatre with a GDS blues system backstage, a house- and working-light system (controlled by an ETC Unison Paradigm), and ETC Sensor3 dimmers

Chill in the forest Universal Event Productions (UEP) has invested in LED technology from Danish-owned manufacturer, SGM to service its on-going work schedule and for the upcoming 2014 Chilfest event – UEP’s very own highly successful summer music festival. The latest purchase involves SGM XC5 RGB LED strobes, SP-6 SixPack pixel blinders and P-5 outdoor LED wash lights, all of which were delivered by SGM UK. It underlines UEP’s on-going commitment to investing in greener technology and using this where possible on shows and events. UEP was an early adopter of LED and digital lighting, and around 80 per cent of its lighting rental stock is now LED based. Steve Butcher explained: ‘With events becoming increasingly carbon conscious, for us it makes sense. The core of UEP’s work is in the high end corporate sector, an area where many brands are taking their green credentials very seriously in all aspects.’ For the Chilfest event, the SGM P-5s will be used specifically to illuminate the foliage and trees at the back of the stage in Pendley Meadow, Tring when the event is staged in July. ‘We are blessed with having an area of outstanding natural beauty as a backdrop to Chilfest,’ explained Butcher, ‘ And this year we intend to accentuate this with scenic lighting so everyone can enjoy the unique setting at dusk and in darkness.’ The IP65-rated P-5 fixture takes SGM’s popular Palco 5 as a design base for the low-profile, rectangular, full-colour wash unit utilising 44 x RGBW 10W LEDs. Combined with its small footprint, the power consumption is reduced to just 410W. Also with Chilfest in mind, UEP has purchased 12 Robe ColorSpot 1200E AT moving lights from DPL. ‘These are in mint condition and I have hired them many times... so I thought I might as well buy them,’ added Butcher.

incorporating 3kW and 5kW dim and non-dim modules and ETC’s new ThruPower modules for production lighting. The latter can be switched remotely between dimmable and non-dim functions and were installed in anticipation of a greater use of LED fixtures. Rehearsal, performance and house lighting can all be controlled directly from each venue’s lighting console or from Stage Electrics’ customised

panel with ETC touch screen interface, which can be configured and programmed for all levels of technical ability. The company also fabricated IWBs and custom-built lighting ladders for the theatre, in addition to manufacturing portable dimming and power distribution solutions. The top quality lighting inventory includes fixtures from leading manufacturers, including ETC, Robert Juliat,

Martin Professional, ADB, Philips Selecon and James Thomas Engineering. Stage Electrics’ bespoke concert manager and stage manager desks, designed in consultation with stage management tutors, have been tailored specifically for each venue, with features that include dimmable white and blue lights, tactile, user-friendly buttons and AMX control of lighting and cameras.

RETAIL

HIGHLIGHT Innovation nation Toshiba has announced another development in its commitment to LED innovation with the release of new fixtures for retail use that cater for the enhanced lighting requirements of shop environments. The LED Neoaccent series comprises three models that provide elegant, precise and focused accent lighting, each with a designated set up for different architectural needs. Combined in one space, this comprehensive matching product line up is designed to show shop displays in their best light, with ultimate clarity and brilliance. The range highlights products where it matters, with accuracy and flexibility. Bundling light to one point has always been a challenge for LED technology, but Toshiba believes its line up overcomes this with designated lenses that achieve precise beam angles and strong CBCP. This ensures minimum light overspill, for direct and consistent accenting at different degrees angles. This light quality also means that the retailer can be sure the product is lit to its best advantage, and with two colour temperatures (3000K and 4000K), different lumen classes and three housing colours, users are able to achieve the exact specifications needed for any situation. The range comprises three models: Tracklight, with three-circuit universal adapter and independent dimming lever at the gear box; Recessed Extractable, which features a DALI-controllable gear and lighting head adjustability; and Recessed Battery, which offers great flexibility with single, double and triple installation frames and individual lamping. The consistency of the dynamic design language of all the components in the range allows for an easy combination within one installation. Eva Bierbaumer, product manager at Toshiba Europe commented: ‘The new Toshiba Neoaccent range is further evidence of Toshiba’s aim to continue to innovate in the sector, with adaptable and easy-to-use LED solutions for all retail occasions and locations. ‘We are committed to our goal of cost-effective and efficient lighting.’

Glam therapy Sutton FM is working on the second phase of a spectacular £2.5m lighting project in Central London. The contractor, part of the BAM group, began installation on the Sloane Street façade of the Knightsbridge estate – the buildings between Harrods and Harvey Nichols - at the end of January. Sutton completed the first phase of the challenging scheme last year for client, Chelsfield. Lighting designer, GIA conceived a complex system relying on products from four manufacturers - Traxon, ACDC, Philips and IGuzzini - to create an effect complementing the prestigious area. More than 1,500 light fittings were used for the first phase of the scheme, with each one individually addressed and independently controlled. Of course, for such a prestigious location, it was necessary to hide all of the cabling. The eight-week second phase will see the successful project replicated on the reverse side of the building. Discussing the project, Sutton FM director, Paul Rowledge said: ‘This is a highly complicated project in a high profile location. ‘We are very proud with the effect we have been able to create with the first phase, and look forward to achieving the same for the other side of the building this year. ‘It is a prime real estate location – and the lighting we are installing on the Knightsbridge estate is a fitting enhancement to these buildings and the local environment.’ Chelsfield asset manager, Will Montague added: ‘The Knightsbridge estate is a world-class retail destination, and we are delighted with the lighting installation carried out by Sutton FM.’

Blue sky thinking Imagine an in-store environment with natural daylight flooding the displays, even in mall environments. Sounds too good to be true? Well, now shoppers can experience sunny skies indoors – even underground - with the advent of CoeLux, a scientific breakthrough, allowing the physical effects and optical phenomena of natural light, specifically the diffusion and transmission of sunlight through the atmosphere to be reproduced in interior spaces. CoeLux combines three key elements: the latest LED

technology which reproduces the sunlight’s spectrum; a sophisticated optical system that creates the sensation of the distance between the sky and the sun; and nano-structured materials, only a few millimeters thick, which recreate the entire Rayleigh scattering process which occurs in the atmosphere. These elements are incorporated into a ‘high-tech window’ capable of artificially reproducing the appearance and the illumination of the sky and the sun.

Born from the desire to communicate natural light, CoeLux is the result of a 10-year scientific research project by Professor Paolo Di Trapani, a physicist of the Department of Science and High Technology at the University of Insubria in Como. The technology is ideal for all types of architecture, and has a particularly high impact in underground spaces. Subways, airports, shopping malls, offices, fitness centres, hotels, museums, housing, even small spaces such as

elevators or ship’s cabins, can be transformed by the technology to change the way they are experienced. CoeLux is a research project funded by the European Union under the 7th Framework Program for research and development. The validity of the results were confirmed by the European Commission, which selected CoeLux as one of the 12 most technologically innovative projects in Europe, and hosted it at the “Innovation Convention” 2014 in Brussels.

ACSP, led by project manager, Lance Bromhead, was tasked with creating an energy-friendly, flexible, architectural lighting solution to help bring the exterior of the attraction to life at night, making it the focal point of its location. Bromhead commented: ‘Up until now, Madame Tussauds London had minimal exterior lighting. The attraction was looking for a versatile solution where lighting could be set to suit different events in its calendar – for instance washing the building in red, blue and white to mark the birth of the Royal baby.’ Bromhead had already met the Madame Tussauds London team at a trade event, which led to a demonstration on site. ‘We used a selection of Pulsar exterior LED products,’ he explained. ‘The attraction was impressed with the demo and, following the scheduled refurbishment of the building’s exterior, ACSP was employed to supply, install and commission the lighting solution.’ To achieve the desired results, ACSP specified nine Pulsar ChromaFlood 200 IP66 tri-colour floodlights. These are used to dramatically up-light the column features of the building’s façade. In addition, eight ChromaBatten 200 IP66 tri-colour battens are used to up-light the flat rendered panels in between. The result is a scheme that can bring dynamic colour changing or fixed colour looks to the facia of the building as required. ‘Each fixture is individually controllable via a Pharos system, with a built-in astronomical clock,’

Bromhead added. ‘The fixtures and cabling are installed on a hard canopy, which runs the length of the now illuminated building façade. ‘The Pulsar fixtures were specifically chosen for their outdoor IP66 rating, high output levels and spread - they have to evenly light the façade to a height of 10-12m - as well as their colour-mixing capabilities and energyefficient, low power consumption.’ Using its specialist knowledge and inhouse cable manufacturing facility, ACSP worked to develop a bespoke cabling solution employing Pulsar’s QuickLink system. Power and DMX is supplied to groups of fixtures via single cables, which link back to a central 240v power and data distribution box. This eliminates the need to install separate 240v power sockets along the roof canopy to bring power to the fixtures. At set up, the Pharos system was preprogrammed with a series of popular colour pre-sets to service the venue’s special events. For example, green for St Patrick’s Day, red for Chinese New Year, as well as the day-to-day plain white and a bespoke scheme for one-off special events. The Pharos system pre-sets can be selected via an intuitive, eight-button panel inside the building, allowing it to be operated by Madame Tussauds’ staff. The colour pre-sets automatically default to the standard program the next day, so staff don’t need to switch it back themselves. ACSP also supplied ChromaStrip X3 LED strips to deliver lighting from inside the refurbished sphere on top of the building’s famous domed roof, and a cool white ChromaFlood 200 to illuminate the signage on the side of the building façade. Dave Joy, project manager, Madame Tussauds London, commented: ‘ACSP’s approach from the design stage to completion was excellent. We had a dedicated project manager who spent many evenings on site trialling various fittings and their location, to achieve the best results. ‘They also liaised with our approved contractor to ensure the installation was carried out to ACSP’s specification, and saw the project through to the programming stage, to ensure the brief was met. The after sales support has also been excellent, and Madame Tussauds London would not hesitate to use ACSP on any future projects.’

The result is a scheme that can bring dynamic colour changing or fixed colour looks to the facia of the building as required’

A PASSION FOR PRECISION Leading lighting designers, curators and conservators traded ideas on lighting recently at a full-day conference organised by the Museums Association and jointly sponsored by Precision Lighting and sister company Remote Controlled Lighting. ‘Bright ideas New developments in museum lighting’ took place at the Royal College of Surgeons in London on April 30th, focusing on the latest thinking on managing exposure to light, LEDs, daylighting and colour. Tate Britain – www.duncanlawson.co.uk

Speakers included: Stephen Cannon-Brookes, a member of the International Committee for Architecture and Museum Techniques; Arfon Davies, associate director at Arup Lighting; lighting designers Kevan Shaw of KSLD and Jonathan Howard, director of DHA Designs; lighting and museum design consultant George Sexton; and David Saunders, keeper of the British Museum’s department of conservation and scientific research. Both companies’ luminaires are widely specified for museum

and gallery lighting. Recent installations in the UK include The Science Museum, The Museum of Manchester, The Museum of Liverpool, Tate Britain and the recently renovated Imperial War Museum, due to reopen later this year. In 2013, Precision Lighting also hosted a breakfast briefing for leading lighting designers and architects on Lighting Guide 8: Lighting for Museums and Art Galleries which is expected to be published in mid-2014, and the MA’s Museums 2020 initiative on the future of institutions. With a reputation for producing high-quality luminaires featuring

exceptional build and finish, it’s easy to see why Precision Lighting’s products are specified on many museum and gallery projects. From bespoke lighting solutions, which include a giant bicycle chandelier created for the Science Museum’s ‘Bicycle Tour’, to inconspicuous display case lighting, most recently seen at the Museum of London’s Cheapside Hoard exhibition, Precision Lighting’s spotlight range offers both choice and versatility. The Pico series has proved particularly popular within this sector. Discreet, unobtrusive and without compromise, the Pico spotlight offers flexibility and performance in a product that is incredibly small but still perfectly formed. ‘Pico has advanced technical features that are traditionally only seen on larger architectural luminaires,’ says Peter McClelland, who leads Precision Lighting’s design team. ‘Features such as low-friction, bearing-aided

rotation and a constant torque tilt mechanism provide smooth and accurate focusing. And as with all our luminaires, they can be locked in pan and tilt to ensure that they remain perfectly aimed on display items.’ At just 60g, the Pico Surface is Precision Lighting’s smallest luminaire. However, the range also includes the Pico 1 and the larger Pico 3, both of which include the company’s innovative Jack Plug connector, allowing them to be mounted across Precision Lighting’s wide range of track and monopoint systems. A long-stem version called the Pico S1 has also been developed, which weighs just 100g and features a 360mm stem for applications such as retail, museum and gallery display lighting, where both accurate focusing and fast set-up are essential. In 2014, Precision Lighting introduced the Pico Plus, capable of holding a variety of accessories, and the Pico Zoom, the latest innovation from the UKbased manufacturers. A finalist at this year’s Lighting Design Awards, the Pico Zoom brings variable beam technology to the Pico range. The Zoom optic can be adjusted between 12° and 30°

90_91.remote.advertorial.indd 83

using a linear slide mechanism, engineered for precise control. The combination of adjustable optics and exceptionally smooth movement makes it possible to position and focus these versatile spotlights with pinpoint accuracy. At the opposite end of the scale is the Evo X series, a classically-proportioned luminaire which has been designed to the golden ratio and combines power and grace with engineering excellence. The result of years of hard work and innovation, the Evo X established the design language now shared by all Precision Lighting products. The spotlight offers tool-less interchangeable optics, and is compatible with a variety of snoots and accessories, resulting in an extremely versatile product. In total, Precision Lighting currently offer four LED luminaire ranges – which also include the Discus and Oculus – each with its own distinct set of features and benefits. One trait consistent throughout the company’s LED collection, however, is the method of manufacture. This is considered to be key to the company’s success, sales director Spence Baxter explains, and sets them apart from their

competitors. ‘Our luminaires are defined by our choice of materials and our process of manufacture,’ says an impassioned Baxter, ‘Only by using aerospacegrade aluminium, selected for its high thermal performance, and by machining, not casting, can we accomplish the level of fit and finish that we desire whilst maintaining the luminous efficiency that we demand.’ And it would seem that this ‘passion for precision’ has led to popularity amongst designers and architects alike, with the company developing a growing base of loyal customers. One client recently remarked, ‘We only work with the best in the industry, and companies that reflect our brand’s values of quality and design; these are values that Precision Lighting hold’. For the company, which believes that the creation of its products is as much an art as it is a science, it would appear that obsessive attention to detail, and a refusal to compromise, is a winning combination. As the company approaches its fifteenth year of business and with several exciting new products on the horizon, Precision Lighting looks set to continue to define high-end lighting both in the UK and abroad.

RETAIL

Beating the bills

A US-based retail giant is making use of lighting management systems to reduce energy usage and associated costs in its warehouse-style outlets

I

nitiated by the rising cost of energy, a major North American retailer began retrofitting the general lighting systems in its warehouse outlets, which are sited across eastern Canada, towards the end of 2013. The main objective of the retrofits is to significantly reduce energy consumption and maintenance costs, while improving the overall lighting performance of each site. In order to meet these objectives, which will enable the retailer to provide a superior shopping experience, with continued savings through innovative operational efficiencies, the company turned to Nedap’s smart lighting solution.

REDUCTION OF ENERGY AND MAINTENANCE COSTS

The efficiency of the Nedap solution provides immediate energy savings, by comparison to the existing lighting systems. However, the majority of the energy savings are captured by the light management system, which is being installed alongside the lighting. The system features dimmable lighting fixtures with integrated wireless controls and intuitive light management software. This enables the end user to realise significant energy savings and maintenance cost reductions, via intelligent scheduling, daylight harvesting, load shedding and occupancy sensing. Nedap’s bespoke distributed light management system, Luxon Live is designed from a user perspective, and can be utilised either for a single location, or for consolidating multiple facilities anywhere in the world. The system provides constant communication to and from the lighting fixtures. Continual diagnostic and monitoring functions provide key metrics and data in real time, while reporting features are used to aggregate critical data into meaningful reports. The project rollout started in December 2013 and is scheduled to continue throughout 2014. CON TACT Nedap www.nedap-luxon.com

HIGHLIGHT Better safe…

Martech UK has improved its electrical safety testing procedure by installing the advanced HAL 104 from Clare. Martech has been using ten HAL 104s on its stock, assembly and sub-assembly production lines. The 104s perform a range of Class I, II and III tests to ensure compliance with EN 60598 and guarantee product quality and reliability. Function testing is also undertaken as part of a production line programme, and that any ancillary equipment works in accordance with stringent performance criteria. The digital HAL 104s, which replaced three different types of test equipment, record test results and ensure accurate testing is carried out in line with relevant product standards at all times. This ensures that products leaving the factory gate are

safe to use, and that damage to delicate electronic and electrical components is avoided in line with the company’s quality assurance programme. Edmund Reed, Martech’s quality manager, explained that the ability to set up the HAL 104 via barcode input is advantageous, enabling tests to be fully controlled, and operators to undertake testing in line within specific parameters. ‘The HAL 104 is an excellent instrument, which works extremely well providing fast, accurate and reliable testing in a demanding production environment,’ he said. ‘Using the all-in-one features has led to greater automated testing, and ultimately improvements in production line manufacturing and quality. Features like the barcode scanner, which improves data logging and traceability, are particularly beneficial.’ The instrument meets the end of line electrical safety compliance tests required by the majority of national and international product safety standards, including EN 60335, EN 60745 and EN 60598 and others.

All things to all men Acknowledging the changing demands of the marketplace, LSC has introduced an intelligent dimming and power distribution unit. GenVI is the sixth generation dimmer to be manufactured by LSC. GenVI is considered by LSC to be a one-product-solution for complex lighting and power control. Equally at home in the lighting, sound and video markets, for portable or permanent installation, the system allows its outputs to be configured as an 8- or 16-bit dimmer, or as a direct power relay channel. This TruPower technology enables the user to set some channels to dim traditional lamps, and others to power moving lights, LED fixtures, strobes, fans, video screens - and even audio power amplifiers. GenVI has all the specifications expected of a professional grade dimmer, including Softpatch, colour touch screen operation, RDM (for remote control and monitoring), Riggers control, local scene and chase replay and emergency backup scene. The TruPower circuits are true relay connection providing a direct power path to the load so they are safe for any type of connected load.

Not just for lighting Technical Stage Services (TSS) has cultivated a strong customer relationship with Chauvet during the past four years, and recently turned to the manufacturer for the supply of a 5m x 2.5m video wall for client, UCAS The Undergraduate Careers Advisory Service (UCAS). UCAS holds student conferences and events around the UK and needed a way to quickly provide information to the large numbers that attend the various venues. The solution was Chauvet Professional’s PVP S5 video wall panels, which feature a tight 5.2mm pixel pitch and black face tri-colour SMD LEDs for the perfect presentation of live video, and highly defined graphics for presentation either at close range or from distance. Lightweight and modular, with a solid construction, the PVP S5 is well suited to rental and touring applications, as well as long term, permanent, indoor installation. Utilising Neutrik, PowerCON and etherCON connectors, installation and connectivity is simple, quick and easy. TSS’ managing director, Dan Dawson explained: ‘It’s a good product at a good price. We’ve built up a very good working relationship with Chauvet — and more so in the last year or so. They’ve got a really good range of products. The reliability is a lot higher than their competitors and they’re nice people to deal with. One of the key things is the range of the products they have.’

Home from home Cooper Lighting and Safety has delivered a £500,000 lighting and fire alarm fit out on Doncaster Council’s civic office. The five-storey building is part of a major regeneration that covers 25 per cent of the Waterdale area. The first phase of the new Civic and Cultural Quarter includes the performance venue, Cast and Sir Nigel Gresley Square, as well as housing and roads. The civic office building provides flexible office space

for 1,600 council staff, and has achieved a BREEAM Excellent rating, which is expected to save the council £650,000 a year in operational costs. The mains functionality for lighting used Cooper’s Acoustic system, including Moduspec T5 in all office spaces; fitted with dimming controls allowing for lighting levels to be altered for an ambient workplace atmosphere. To facilitate safe exit from the building in the event of mains

power outage, a high spec emergency lighting system was also fitted, incorporating two Loadstar AC/DC battery systems. Loadstar has been awarded both EN50171 and the BSI Kitemark for its performance and safety features. The system also includes EC1002nc panels, which can each have up to 255 emergency luminaries connected. The status of each luminaire can be read as either a numerical fault value or as

a digital value per fault-code. Each panel can be reset individually, making the system user friendly, while still offering absolute peace of mind. To create a bespoke solution that addressed the client’s lighting requirements and complemented the contemporary feel of the building, LSN fittings were selected for the stairwells, incorporating T5 luminaires. Additional luminaires fitted within the system include New Safe 8 self-contained

8W T5 luminaires, which are suitable for interior and exterior use, as well as New Safe Ex emergency exit signs, designed with pictograms for safe egress guidance. Scott Cardwell of Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council commented on the project: “Eaton’s Cooper Lighting and Safety worked extensively with the contractor and us to result in a high quality mains and emergency lighting and fire system, fit for our new offices.’

Healing hands

New developments in lighting for medical applications could turn out to be life-savers

Because LED units don’t need to be accessed - their housing can be comprehensively sealed, and thus protected against bacteria’

Y

ou know an industry is on a roll when Government departments and MPs of all persuasions start sitting up and taking notice. And that’s exactly what’s happening in the lighting sector at the moment. Lighting is fast becoming über-glamorous as a topic for switched-on Governmental discussion, what with the energy savings potential of LED adoption, and the new advances that are helping medical science fight back against disease. Shadow Health Minister, Andy Burnham has been showing his support for an idea, developed by MHA Lighting, that helps NHS Trusts prevent hospital superbugs. The Labour MP for Leigh met with employees to find out how the lighting is helping in the fight against hospital-acquired infections. By designing a fully sealed LED unit for hospital ward and theatre use, the ingress of dirt and dead insects is halted, making cleaning simpler and helping to stop the spread of infection associated with the warm, often dirty surroundings of standard fittings. Commenting on the MHA TiLite product range, Burnham said: ‘Energy efficient lighting helps save the NHS money, and reduces a Trust’s carbon footprint. Most importantly, the money saved can be directly ploughed back into frontline patient services. ‘Trusts are always seeking ways to free up money for clinical care, and the battle against superbugs is continuous. MHA Lighting seems to be in possession of a product that can help the NHS on both these fronts, and make a real contribution to the wellness of patients.’ ‘Installing LED into a healthcare environment will have a drastic effect on energy consumption and your carbon footprint,’ suggests Glen Harper at Lyco, ‘but it can also be useful in preventing the spread of bacteria and germs. ‘Because lighting maintenance is virtually eliminated, there’ll be no regular changing of bulbs to unsettle dead bugs, bacteria, and dust. For the same reason - because LED units don’t need to be accessed - their housing can be comprehensively sealed, and thus protected against bacteria.’ Special consideration has to be given to corridors in a healthcare environment. ‘The elimination of glare is an important factor, especially since patients and residents are www.tlmagazine.co.uk • J U N E 2 0 1 4 • 69

sometimes likely to be seated in a wheelchair or supine, so lighting needs to be sufficiently diffused,’ explained Harper. To comply with European 12464-1 Standards, users of any building should not have to pass from a bright light area, such as outdoors, or a projection-room, into a darkened corridor. For healthcare premises the recommended corridor illuminance is 200 lux at floor level, though it can drop to 50 lux at night. One of the more significant ways a hospital or other healthcare building can save money is to use occupancy detection technology in little-used corridors, stairwells, or utility rooms. Essentially this allows you to keep lights almost permanently extinguished in areas where they were previously kept on. At North Devon District Hospital, part of the North Devon Healthcare Trust (NDHT), MHA replaced traditional 72-watt fluorescent fittings with 4000 Kelvin TiLite 20- and 30-watt units in wards, corridors and the reception areas. The high colour rendering is precisely the colour the NHS requires to provide perfect light quality for examining patients: in rooms used for giving medical attention, a colour of at least 4000k (neutral) is specified as it depicts skin pallor at its true colour. Every year, the Trust was consuming large amounts of electricity on lighting, using up 127,910 KW/H per annum and emitting 70 Tonnes of Co2 in the specified areas. The installation of the new TiLite fittings has saved a massive, 94,866 KW/H, and with the integration of dimmers, energy savings have exceeded 75 per cent. MHA developed a bespoke dimming solution for NDHT, to allow lights to be dimmed down to five per cent; this was fundamental for the Trust to create a more pleasant and healing environment, where patients and staff are in control of ward lighting levels - during sleeping hours for example. The LED TiLite design shines light sideways into encapsulation – avoiding direct contact with the eye and providing a safe and efficient light output. Acrylic rods and waveguide technology focus and control the light output, reducing the

number of LEDs required. Using ‘Rod with Holes’ technology means they can use high power LEDs, draw less current and have no need to diffuse the output. It also enables light to be emitted uniformly out of an optic with directional control to a specific task area. This technology allows the light quality and uniformity of traditional light sources to be replicated, achieving the photometric performance of traditional lamps, while offering the benefits of LED to the NHS, which is currently tasked with evaluating how the fabric of its existing properties contributes to the spread of infection. Discussing the installation at North Devon, Moses Warburton, from NDHT, said: ‘NDHT already has an enviable standard on carbon reduction, and this is part of our continuing commitment to reduce our carbon footprint. ‘With the new lighting system, we have made significant savings to our energy bills, and of course, those savings will be ploughed back into clinical care. ‘This system has really made a difference to patients too. It has created a much better atmosphere for our patients and staff. Even light and less flicker is a huge improvement for those patients with sight problems. ‘It is vital, lighting units are designed to minimise hospital infection, and the maintenance-free aspect assists us in delivering better maintenance services with faster reaction times to the whole hospital.’

KEEP CALM

The Design Council has also got involved, having released guidance about the lighting in A&E departments. It suggested that better lighting could reduce incidents of violence and aggression, as well as help to improve the experience for patients and their families. The Council commissioned observational research, which found that the lighting in the waiting areas of A&E departments was often bright and harsh, even at night. The findings suggest that this ambience was contributing to patients’ feelings of stress and discomfort that could boil over into aggression. Adjusting the light levels within a space can help produce a suitable ambience, and the best way to do this is through lighting controls. ‘Early generation controls, such as DALI and 1-10V are difficult to commission and install, and often require downtime in a facility, which is not possible in a busy A&E department,’ explained Andy Davies, business development manager for indoor controls at Harvard Engineering. ‘EyeNut allows hospital facilities managers to completely configure, control and monitor their lighting to create the level of ambience needed. It can be simply retrofitted to existing lighting, as the system is wireless, enabling a variety of control strategies to be implemented at the touch of a button. These include, daylight harvesting, occupancy sensing, time scheduling, and scene setting.’

With the new lighting system, we have made significant savings to our energy bills, and of course, those savings will be ploughed back into clinical care’ Our hospitals are often based across a number of sites with many different buildings; these can be controlled and monitored over one system, using an intuitive user interface, but each department could control its own lighting, enabling levels to be tailored to the exact needs of each, so wards would be dimmed while A&E remained ‘live’ overnight. Davies continued: ‘The system can be linked to PIR presence and absence detection sensors, to provide further control and energy savings. It also allows corridor linking, as well as day and night scheduling to make patients’ stays more comfortable.’

LIGHT THE BLUE TOUCH

Those clever boffins over at Philips Lighting have come up with a new medical gadget called BlueTouch, which uses lighting specifically to help sufferers of chronic back pain. In my book, that deserves a celebratory sparkler or two. The BlueTouch Pain Relief Patch - to give it its full title - is designed to offer non-invasive, on-demand pain relief in a discrete, wearable device. Now for the science - it uses a special blue LED light to induce the production of nitric oxide in the skin, which is proven to trigger a number of protective and preventive processes in the body. It relaxes muscles through a mechanism centered on improved blood circulation, which results in pain relief. Simples! According to Philips’ research, BlueTouch offers drug- and chemical-free pain relief with just two sessions of 15-30 minutes. The venture to develop the product was stimulated by some new key technology and a known market need. ‘As well as being aware of the prevalence of the problem, we also had the research showing that blue light could stimulate blood flow and relieve muscle pain,’ explained David Aubert, venture manager at Philips Lighting. ‘Philips Research had the capability to combine electronics and textiles, and this has been the perfect application of that technology.’

hanks to energy efficient initiatives, including an LED lighting solution and Lutron’s latest light control technology, The Business Academy in Bexley is saving £25,000 a year. Sam Elms, chief executive commented: ‘Installing LED lighting was the logical next step in our efforts to develop a greener and healthier learning environment for our students.’ The Academy, housed in a predominantly glass structure, has undertaken improvements that are having a significant impact on reducing overheads and maintenance costs. Amongst these is the introduction of a bespoke LED lighting solution, designed by 8point3 LED, and incorporating Lutron controls. Ashley Bateup, managing director of 8point3 LED explained: ‘As part of an ongoing relationship with The Business Academy, we were asked to advise on the replacement of the existing T5 and T8 fluorescent scheme. The management team wanted a more energy efficient solution that could be put in with minimal interference to the school’s working day, promoting sustainability, that would dramatically reduce the academy’s lighting bill - and have no up-front costs.’ To achieve the requirements, 8point3 LED worked with Lutron and electrical installer, Mears to provide a creative LED retrofit that looks set to enable the required savings. Terry John at 8point 3 LED said: ‘As with any refurbishment, it would have been much easier for us to rip out the old luminaires and replace them with a total new LED fitting and controls solution. However, the Academy had been very specific on putting sustainability high on the retrofit agenda. As there was a lot of trunking infrastructure already in place, it made sense to design something bespoke to utilise that. With this in mind, we decided to keep the existing surfacemounted and recessed luminaire

Making a refurbishment programme pay

chassis and, working with Lutron and Mears, we designed custom gear trays, lighting engines and diffusers for the range of 35W T5 and T8 fluorescents, 18W CFL downlighters and the recessed modular light fittings. ‘We put bespoke LEDs on the gear trays and integrated all of the fittings with Lutron’s wireless Energi TriPak to achieve maximum savings.’ With energy efficiency and user comfort high on the wish list, Lutron’s wireless retrofit solution was brought in to give light when it was wanted. Richard Whitbread, sales manager at Lutron explained further: ‘The Business Academy is built around three immense glazed atriums. The original scheme did not include lighting control. Due to the high levels of natural light pouring into these spaces at certain times of the day, the potential for energy savings with lighting control was immense.’ As well as the entrance, library and science atriums, Lutron’s Energi TriPak was installed throughout the school’s corridors, classrooms, toilets and changing rooms. Being wireless technology, Energi TriPak was quick and easy to install and re-programme for the needs of individual spaces. In the glazed atriums and perimeter classrooms, the company’s Radio Powr Savr wireless daylight sensors were installed as well as occupancy sensors, so that light levels could be adjusted based on the natural light levels. During the process, teachers’ asked for a ‘teaching mode’ programmed into the system. The controls were reprogrammed on site quickly and simply to accommodate the added scene. Ashley Bateup explained why 8point3 LED chose Energi TriPak: ‘We wanted the Academy to have a control solution that not only suited their needs on day one, but could be reconfigured simply and quickly as required. ‘Being wireless, with no output wires, Energi TriPak was straightforward to install, and as we had to install the whole lighting scheme during the school holidays, speed of installation was key to the success of this project. ‘As well as bringing scene control to the classrooms, the daylight and occupancy sensors have helped us bring big energy savings to the completed lighting installation.’ The end result is a highly sustainable lighting solution that brings out the best in LED and light control technology. As well as providing a stimulating learning space that adapts throughout the day to external levels, The Academy now has one of the most energy efficient lighting schemes in academia. PEOPLE

Ten minutes with...

Perhaps Councils should use their postinstallation rights to challenge poor installations?’ What is your favourite light source, and why? Low angld sunlight – like sunrise or sunset. It is rich and warm and creates amazing skin tones and long shadows - it just makes everything look better.

JONATHAN RUSH Jonathan Rush, Associate at Hoare Lea Lighting shares his personal thoughts and ideas on the industry and lighting the future Jonathan Rush began his design career studying furniture design at UCE, Birmingham. He graduated in 1999 and worked as a lighting designer for a number of consultancies before joining Hoare Lea Lighting in 2005. In 2009, he successfully completed his MSc in Light & Lighting at the Bartlett School of Architecture, before becoming associate lighting designer with responsibility for the design work of Hoare Lea Lighting’s London team. Rush has worked on a wide range of heritage, retail, commercial, and residential lighting design projects. His portfolio includes projects such as Heathrow Terminal 3, Gordon Ramsay’s Bread Street Kitchen, and South Place Hotel, London. He is passionate about the importance of architectural lighting as the interface between people and space. He regularly contributes to industry magazines and is a popular speaker on range of lighting design topics.

Should more be done to control light pollution, or is it not really a big issue? Of course, more should be done, but the issue is big and complex. For a start, you have population densities and fear of crime, which lead people to demand light. You also have old lighting products that won’t be replaced overnight. I believe current guidance provides the informed designer with tools to mitigate pollution, but many installations do not follow this. Perhaps Councils should use their post-installation rights to challenge poor installations? We also really need some means to control colour pollution.

Who is your favourite designer of anything that’s not lighting? Charles and Ray Eames, for their work in all sectors of design - from furniture and architecture, to art and film. Watch their movie, Powers of 10 – it was made in 1977 and still looks incredible.

Which lighting project would you like to have worked on? The opening ceremony of the 2012 Olympic Games. I don’t think I could have done better – I just would have enjoyed being involved.

After the huge changes LED has brought to the industry, what do you think will be the next big advance? IP addresses in lamps (and pretty much anything we own!). Essentially, every gadget and electrical device will be controllable

through a smartphone. The days of control systems will be gone and people will be able to create their own control networks via apps. This is not that far away and will be a game changer in terms of personal preference and energy control.

Do you see a time when all lighting is sustainable? If so, how can we achieve it? I think lighting will always draw energy in production, distribution, installation, use and disposal – so this is really a question of sustainable energy sources. According to Part L targets, by 2016 residential projects have to be zero carbon (and 2019 for commercial projects).

What trends do you forecast in domestic lighting? In the domestic market, control technologies, like Hue by Philips, offer the ability to set moods and colour scenes easily, thereby giving people greater personal interaction with their lighting.

Why do you think lighting is bucking the general trend and showing such strong growth? It is due to the new technologies hitting the market, combined with new energy targets and an increased awareness in the value and importance of good lighting.

Chandelier or candle? Candle.

Is there one declining light source that you’ll miss above all others? If so, which is it, and why? Sodium street lighting - I realise it is bad on many levels, but it is embedded in my experience. I have memories of being in the car at night as a child, and watching the amber hues phase past – it’s an emotional connection that I will miss.
