THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE

FROM THE PUBLISHER As I’m writing this we still have over a foot of snow here at TRO HQ in lovely Burton, Ohio – but the forecasters promise that it’s only a matter of time before it all melts away and Spring will actually arrive. With any luck, this will have happened by the time you receive this magazine and we might just have pulled our bikes out for some early, kick-off the season rides. But of course, it’s Ohio – so I’m assuming we still have at least one or two more surprise snow storms in store for us. Regardless, I’m confident that riding season will eventually arrive and we can officially transition from our planning phase to our riding portion of the year. For 2018, we have a number of really cool initiatives that we are focused on. Some new, and some that have been in the works for months – even years. For Thunder Roads Ohio, our biggest news this season is our website. We finally pulled the trigger and rolled out our new website and expanded digital aspect – and all indications are that were firing on all cylinders. ThunderRoadsOhio.com is without a doubt the most complete motorcycle digital resource for riders in the Buckeye State – with the most comprehensive listing of motorcycle events anywhere. As we finalize things for this April Edition of the magazine, we already have hundreds of Ohio motorcycle events listed throughout the year – and its only March! The website allows event organizers and clubs to directly enter their events into the website – and they can add graphics, flyers, and links to their own websites or social media. The event listings allow riders to automatically map to the location and can even see an aerial view of the location and surrounding area. It’s pretty cool. Beyond the event listings, the website offers classifieds, unique and expanded blog content, and even a forum section for open discussion of topics of interest to riders. If you haven’t checked it out – stop on by, and then let us know what you think. In terms of getting out and about, we are continuing to shift our focus to more and more local events throughout the state. We’ve added several more event trailers – including a pair of motorcycle trailers that allow us to bring a whole set-up (tents, sound system, and of course magazines) to an event while still riding! Our friends over at Trailer Time (pg 71) built us a custom trailer to tow behind my bike that even allows us to comfortably sleep inside while out on the road! It’s pretty cool and will allow us to hit more bike nights and rides throughout the state. Along those lines, we have continued to build on our TRO CHAMPIONSHIP BIKE SHOW SERIES. In my Road Tales section, I’ll talk more about the Bike Shows and how they have evolved over the last few years. We’re just coming off the PISTON POWER AUTO-RAMA and our Championship Bike Show (See Page 46) – featuring over 50 Best in Class and Show Bikes, invited from dozens of Bike Shows held throughout 2017. It was really a great weekend and solid confirmation of what motivated us to focus more on regional and community bike shows. We saw familiar faces that we had met throughout the year – many of which had never shown their bikes before. But there they were, at the big Piston Power Show competing for the Championship Ring! It was pretty cool, and we felt a satisfaction in knowing that we had helped fuel their passion and had given them all a chance to become more active in the greater riding community. By the end of the weekend, our riding family – both TRO and just in terms of brothers and sisters out on the road – had grown exponentially. That’s what fuels our passion and drives us to continue developing more events and more resources for riders. We will always be trying new things – like a TRO Coloring Book – and exploring new roads in the hope that we can inspire more and more folks to join us out on the road. As always though, we couldn’t do it without your support. And for that, I’m eternally grateful! Thank you – and I’ll see you out on the road! Derek Armstrong Publisher / Editor in Chief

OHIO BIKE WEEK BIKE SHOW BIGGER AND BETTER THAN EVER BEFORE With the new, concentrated high octane approach taken by Ohio Bike Week this year – the OBW Bike Show presented by Thunder Roads Ohio has been given a make-over in the interests of creating the state’s premier outdoor show for custom and classic motorcycles. Show promoters have teamed with sponsors to offer new trophies, placards, CASH AWARDS, and a custom 24kt gold and silver BEST OF SHOW RING crafted by Vivid Jewelers in Bay Village. (www. VividJewelers.com) This year’s show will be held downtown Sandusky on the water, Sunday May 27th. Exact times are still being finalized as other aspects of the schedule are being considered, but at this time it’s expected that Registration will begin at 12 Noon and run until 2pm. Voting and judging will follow with Awards being announced in the evening. With the show being held in the center of everything downtown, participants and those coming to appreciate the rolling works of art will have plenty to do while in the area. And of course, you couldn’t ask for a better backdrop than Sandusky Bay and Lake Erie for the show. This year’s show will use a combined system of People’s Choice Votes and weighted Judges Scoring to determine the winner amongst more than a dozen classes – including North American Custom, Stock, and Radical classes; Metric and Vintage Classes, Three Wheelers, Competitive Performance, and Custom Paint. Specific BAGGER and AUDIO Classes are offered for the first time this year. Special Pro-Builder and Garage Builder Awards will also be given out.

photographing bikes to be featured in the magazine and possibly nationally through the Thunder Roads Network. All makes and models are welcome, and the hope is that a wide range of bikes are shown – representing the wide range of riders that participate in the rally. More information and advance registration is available through

ThunderRoadsOhio.com. Everyone registering in advance will receive a FREE show t-shirt specific to the Ohio Bike Week Bike Show. A limited number of exhibit spaces are available for Bike Builders and Shops interested in participating in the show. Email BikeShowInfo@gmail.com for more information.

It’s a RIDE-IN show, though, in the midst of the Midwest’s Largest Motorcycle Rally – and everyone is encouraged to participate. Even if you’ve never shown your bike, you’re welcome to come on out and show off what you’ve done to make it yours. Thunder Roads Ohio will be onsite, not just hosting the show – but also 8

TRO REGIONAL VETERAN SERVICE GUIDES Since our launch, Thunder Roads Ohio has worked hard to actively support veterans, those actively serving, and their families within the community. This isn’t just something we say as a sales pitch, but one of our core missions which we back up by actively supporting dozens of rides, events, and service oriented charitable organizations within our magazines, online, and on-site whenever possible. It’s a passion driven by experiences and losses within our own family and the recognition that our freedom and existence as a nation is due to the commitment and sacrifices of those that have and are actively serving – and their families. In line with this commitment, TRO and Iron Cowboy Productions is working to develop REGIONAL VETERAN SERVICE GUIDES that will allow us to provide real, valuable information to veterans about events, services, and opportunities that exist within their own community. These guides will include a calendar of rides and motorcycle related service-oriented events – but also a directory of service organizations within the community that can provide assistance to veterans in need. The events included will not just be motorcycle related, and it’s our goal to provide a resource useful to all veterans in need – not just those that ride. It is also our intention to include information on resources that are available to veterans and their families covering a wide range of needs and issues – such as counseling, housing, medical services, utilities, and even burial benefits. There are a lot of folks and organizations out there that are willing to help, but unfortunately it can often be a challenge connecting those offering and those needing. There is also a misconception amongst many that these are simply charities and a gift that shouldn’t be accepted. Nothing could be further from the truth in our eyes. Many veterans and

THUNDER ROADS® OHIO MAGAZINE

their families sacrificed much and are possibly continuing to suffer as a result of their service. The services and assistance we are hoping to help connect with those in need – are simply an effort to do what we can to address the debt that is owed by us all. It is our hope that these Guides and the information contained can be delivered in a manner that allows us to reach some that might not otherwise consider the options they have. This project is being undertaken as a charitable service to the community, with us hoping to underwrite the hard costs through the support of sponsors and organizations within the local community. We have already begun working with

some veterans organizations, but we would welcome the assistance of anyone willing to help. We need help compiling information, contacting organizations, and putting it all together. We are also looking for local businesses and organizations that are willing to help sponsor this project. This is a non-profit project – and all proceeds will be returned to the local community in order to assist those in need. It’s envisioned that this will primarily be done through the same organizations and services profiled in the directory. If you would like to get involved or possibly help sponsor the project, please email us at RegionalVeteransGuide@gmail.com

TRO SCAVENGER HUNT The TRO SCAVENGER HUNT is a special, indoor THUNDER RUN through the pages of our very own magazine. Hidden someplace within the depth of these pages is a special TRO PRIZE LOGO – see the sample here. It’s a version of our “wheel logo” with a treasure chest on it. It was inspired by Cole’s favorite TV show – Jake and the Neverland Pirates! When you find it, shoot us an email at BuckeyeThunderRun@gmail.com with SCAVENGER HUNT in the subject line. Let us know what page and exactly where the logo is in this month’s magazine and we will put you in the drawing for some great TRO prizes – including some great gear and subscriptions to the magazine! How cool is that?!

REPORT 33 Secrets For Smart Touring There’s nothing like the feeling of loading up and heading out on a big motorcycle trip. And there’s nothing like the security of knowing you’re prepared for life on the road. It can take years to develop that knowledge through trial and error. So we’ve devised a shortcut. We’ve asked AMA staff members to share with you the experience they’ve accumulated over decades on the road. What you’ll find here isn’t a comprehensive collection of touring knowledge. Instead, here are 33 insider tips—useful suggestions that have made our tours more organized and more fun. We guarantee you’ll learn something. 1. Eat at weird times. Everyone and their dog eats around 8 a.m., noon and 6 p.m. To get in and out of restaurants in a hurry, don’t be hungry then. 2. A short metal cable with loops on both ends (like those made to keep people from stealing bicycle seats) is perfect for securing a jacket and helmet to your bike’s helmet lock. 3. Carry a spare key. Hide it somewhere on your bike with a zip-tie or duct tape, or better yet, trade spare keys with a traveling companion. 4. Portable weather radios are now in the $20 range, and the first time one saves you from running right into a massive storm, you’ll wonder why you ever traveled without one. Find one at accessory companies like Aerostich. 5. On high-mileage days, you’ll feel a lot better if you carry eye drops and use them every time you stop for gas. 6. If you’re nearing the end of your riding day and want to set yourself up for a quick getaway in the morning, consider riding to the far side of the next city you reach before you stop for the night, eliminating urban traffic the next morning. 7. Take a tip from off-road riders: carry a backpack hydration system so you can drink while you ride. A must for arid weather. 8. Going on a long, complex trip? Keep yourself organized with the envelope system. Before you leave, prepare one envelope for each day on the road. Mark the dates and locations on the outside, then stuff things like hotel reservation info and lists of things to see inside. Instead of juggling your entire stack of literature to find the information you need, you can just open up that day’s envelope. 9. A simple map case attached to your bike’s tank (we’ve used a Rev-Pak version that has been available through www.whitehorsepress. com for years) can keep you on course without the bulk of a tank bag. 10. Keep your stuff dry in saddlebags by using trash compactor bags as waterproof barriers. They’re thicker and more durable than standard garbage bags. 11. Use earplugs to help reduce wind noise. You can get them from most mail-order shops or dealers, or in bulk from safety-equipment supply houses. 14 14

12. Don’t forget that pack-and-ship places are just about everywhere these days. They’re perfect when you spot that antique umbrella stand you’re dying to buy hundreds of miles from home. 13. Don’t forget a small towel or rag for wiping dew off seats, windshields and mirrors, and even for doing a quick whole-bike cleanup. Synthetic chamois cloths work particularly well. 14. Pack extra bungees and zip-ties. Or, instead of bungees, try using strips of Velcro 18” to 24” long. They are adjustable and strong, and the smooth side doesn’t scuff your bike’s finish. 15. Go ahead, buy that GPS you’ve always wanted. They’re perfect not only for finding yourself, but also for allowing you the freedom to get lost in the first place. 16. You’ve heard it a million times, but we’ll say it again: look over your bike carefully every morning on the road. Checking the simple stuff—air pressure, oil level, loose or missing fasteners—can save you from big trouble. 17. Sign up for AMA Roadside Assistance. To sign up, call the AMA at: (614) 856-1900. 18. Stash a little hidden cash somewhere on the bike or on you, so you can make something happen when all else fails. 19. Before you take off from the hotel or campground in the morning, double check every strap on tank bags or soft saddlebags, and every latch on hard luggage. 20. Wear a dog-tag with your name and contact info, especially if you’re riding alone. You can get them lots of places, including your local army surplus store. 21. Take a look back at where you were parked every time you leave someplace. You’d be amazed at what you find. 22. A cellphone can be a lifesaver in an emergency. You can dial 911 for help anywhere you find cell service, but you’ll need to tell a dispatcher where you are. Keep track of route numbers, interstate exits, towns you’ve passed,

THUNDER ROADS® ROADS® OHIO OHIO MAGAZINE MAGAZINE THUNDER

THUNDERROADSOHIO.COM THUNDERROADSOHIO.COM

mileposts—anything that can save emergency officials time in getting to you. 23. Good motorcycle gear really is worth it. Waterproof, breathable linings in boots and jackets will transform the way you think about bad weather. A number of companies offer materials that work well, but always test your gear on a rainy day at home before facing a storm on the road. 24. Do routine maintenance at home with your bike’s toolkit, so you’re sure you have what you need along the side of the road. 25. On a long tour, plan for at least one day every week of doing nothing. Time is the ultimate luxury, and can mean the difference between a vacation and an endurance run. 26. Be realistic with your daily mileage. In really scenic areas, 150 miles may make a very full day. Don’t assume you can achieve freeway mileage on good back roads. 27. Guidebooks can be invaluable, but these days, an internet search can add spice to your trip by revealing special-interest locations most books fail to include. One of the sites we’ve used is www.roadsideamerica.com. World’s largest concrete bison, anyone? 28. It is possible to use a kit to make emergency repairs on tubeless or tube-type tires alongside the road. But before you count on this as your safety net, practice using the kit on an old tire in your garage. 29. A packable motorcycle cover not only keeps your bike clean and dry overnight, it also discourages thieves. And don’t forget a stout lock of some kind for the bike itself. 30. If you can afford it and are short of time, you could always ship your bike somewhere cool and ride it back. Call Federal Motorcycle Transport at (800) 747-4100, ext. 217 or 218, for details. 31. If you call a hotel--even if you’re two blocks away--you can often get a better rate than if you just walk in. And if you have access to a computer, there are some spectacular Internetonly deals available these days. Either way, do yourself a favor and have a reservation by 4 p.m. You never know when a convention will take over your destination city. Remember that AMA members get a discount at several hotel chains including Choice Hotels (call 800-258-2847 or go to www.choicehotels.com, click on “Enter Special Rate ID” and use the AMA Member discount code) and Motel 6 (call 800-4-MOTEL6 or go to www.motel6.com and use the AMA Member discount code). Discount codes can be found at the AMA Discount Codes page. 32. A nap can do wonders on a long day. 33. If you’re traveling east or west, schedule your breakfast or dinner times near sunrise or sunset so you don’t have to stare into the sun when it’s low on the horizon. OHIO’S MOTORCYCLE MOTORCYCLE MAGAZINE MAGAZINE OHIO’S

REPORT Danny Eslick wins the 77th running of the Daytona 200 Eslick becomes third rider to win four Daytona 200 championships Danny Eslick grabbed a historic win in the action-packed 77th running of the Daytona 200 on Saturday, March 17. With several of his rivals dropping out of the race due to crashes or technical problems, the TOBC Racing rider crossed the finish line more than 26 seconds ahead of secondplace finisher Cory West to take his fourth Daytona 200 crown. Eslick now ranks third on the all-time Daytona 200 wins list. After the race, Eslick described the win as the most meaningful of his four titles. Three weeks ago, Eslick’s team was not planning on competing in the event. Using some last-minute sponsorship, an all-volunteer pit crew, a spare engine, and some last-minute engine tuning, the team came together to help Eslick cement his name in the motorcycle road racing history books. For West it was his second-consecutive second-place finish, while Robertino Pietri used a classic Daytona draft pass on fourthplace finisher Geoff May on the last lap to round out the podium.

Tis the season to get comfy.

ABATE OF OHIO, INC.

SAFETY REPORT Hi Friends, Here we are in April and riding season is upon us. We have had bad weather for the most part and the numbers show that. Here are the stats for this year - 62 crashes with 1 death and 38 injuries. The weather in 2017 was nice and the figures also show that - 143 crashes with 8 deaths and 105 injures. Remember, in 2016 we had 199 deaths and last year’s total was 145 deaths. That is a 28% drop. Lawmakers and insurance companies are watching us trying to get more laws and higher priced insurance so these better stats help us fight them. Let’s all of us ride smart, take an experienced rider’s course or just go back and take a basic course. It will help keep you safe.

Next month is Motorcycle Awareness Month. ABATE of Ohio will be hosting the Awareness Rally and After Rally Party on Saturday May 5, 2018. The gates open at 9am and we will leave for the State House at noon. I71 will be shut down and the Columbus Motor Patrol will be escorting us all the way to downtown. If you have never been on this ride, it is a great thrill taking over downtown Columbus. After the ceremony at the State House we go down State Street to Victory’s for some fun. For more information go to ABATE. com.

Mike Stock COB & Safety and Education Director mikestock419@gmail.com 419-654-5446

Every year ABATE promotes safe riding and motorcycle awareness. We do this as a volunteer group and one of our fund raisers is the ABATE Foundation Bike Raffle. Tickets are on sale now, so find an ABATE member or call the State Office to get yours. Tickets are $10.00 each. That buys you a chance on a new 2018 Street Glide and a trailer to pull it home. New this year you can get 6 tickets for $50.00. Help us keep Motorcycling Safe. Ride Within Your Limits Mike Stock

I went to the Motorcycle Ohio Awards Ceremony and Jim Elgin received an award for 11 years of service and all his dedication to Motorcycle Ohio. It was well deserved. At the same ceremony, ABATE of Ohio, Inc. received a Supporting Partner award for all our hard work in the effort to get riders trained and our other support for the Motorcycle Ohio program. Other awards were presented to Road Hawk magazine, Ride On Magazine and Thunder Roads Ohio Magazine for all their work promoting the Motorcycle Ohio program. As the finale, Motorcycle Riders Foundation presented Chuck and his crew at MO an award for all they have done to train and promote motorcycle safety. It was a great night. You may think winter is now over but remember it always snows on the daffodils. The roads have taken a beating. The pot holes on the roads I travel are bigger than ever, gravel is still on the roads and signs are missing from being run over. It will take time to get them repaired and cleaned up so start out slow and be aware. Don’t forget to go find a large parking lot to practice. Start out slow, do some figure eights, slow rides, dodging maneuvers and then the fun panic stops, remembering to use both brakes. 18 18

ABATE OF OHIO, INC.

Legislative Report Greetings, All:

Respectfully submitted Kolman Fuzy legislativedirector@abate.com 614-332-0198

Thanks to a few teaser warm days, got some riding chances in at the end of February, nothing like riding without being bundled up like the Michelin Man to put a smile on the old kisser. Please take some time to contact your legislators in Washington and ask them to support the two profiling resolutions-H. Res 318 and S.Res 154, you can do this on your own, or you can go to the MRF website, www.MRF.org and use the response form they have on the site. Add your name to the growing list asking for action on these two resolutions, and urge your legislators to support them as well. The EPA released Renewable Fuel Mandates spell bad news for motorcyclists. The amount of 19.24 billion gallons of renewable fuel (corn ethanol) is forcing more E-15 into the marketplace, which is a concern because of inadvertent mis-fueling, caused by blender pumps and confusing pump labels. It also can reduce the supply of E-0 and E-10 fuels, as fuel producers work to stay within the EPA guidelines. As you travel, pay close attention to the pump you are using and also to the labeling on the pump to insure you are not introducing E-15 into your MC. Writing this on March 1st., the Abate Legislative Seminar is one month away. It is open to the public, and final details are being nailed down. Hope to see a good turnout. See flyer in the Outspokin for more details. Also, the May Awareness Rally is two months in the future. This event begins May as Motorcycle Awareness Month in Ohio, and if you have been riding for more than five minutes, you understand the need for more attention from motorists toward motorcyclists. This is a rain or shine event, and a large turnout is needed to send a meaningful message to Ohio motorists to concentrate on their driving and their driving ONLY when they get behind the wheel. Join us to help deliver that message. THUNDER THUNDER ROADS® ROADS® OHIO OHIO MAGAZINE MAGAZINE

CMA Don’t stay in the Darkness “But as for me, I will watch expectantly for the Lord, I will wait for the God of my salvation. My God will hear me. Do not rejoice over me, O my enemy. Though I fall I will rise; Though I dwell in darkness, the Lord is a light for me.” Micah 7:7 & 8 NASB There’s a Hebrew word here being translated as darkness. It can mean literal absence of light or, it could mean misery, sorrow or destruction. I have experienced times of misery, anguish and sorrow which became so powerful they nearly destroyed my faith and hope for the future in Jesus Christ. I believe verses such as these can be speaking of a darkness that’s different from physical darkness we might see. It’s the darkness felt in your innermost being and brings with it sorrow, misery and deep, painful anguish in your heart. This darkness can consume your heart and life for years. There is only one way to find freedom from such oppressive darkness, and that is to cry out to God for His mercy. Then run to the glorious Light of our loving Savior who can set us free. Jesus consumes all darkness and the coldness which comes along with it. The warmth of God’s love and presence rebuilds our confidence, comforts, heals and delivers the broken-hearted. This is when our pain and anguish is transformed into overcoming trust and hope in the promises of God; even though the source of our darkness may linger.

Christian Motorcyclists Association COME RIDE WITH US! CMA is a servant minded interdenominational motorcycle ministry with a nondenominational message of hope and love through Jesus Christ. We need not be enslaved to the source of our misery, sorrow, anguish or pain from the darkness we are experiencing. If we slipped into any sin as a result of this darkness, we must live with the consequences of that sin; but, we do not have to live in the hopelessness of unbelief that God cannot and will not restore our salvation. Jesus said, “Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28 NASB I challenge you to not just come to Jesus, but to “Run to Jesus!” GR (Jerry) Niver CMA Ohio State Coordinator

KENNEDY STYLE

by: Denise Kennedy, TRO

Bike Week 2018 Decided to head South this year and try another bike week. Always good to get away from work and the cold and get some riding in. We rode to the usuals: Cabbage Patch, Main Street and The Iron Horse. We visited our favorite places to eat and drink and checked out the vendors at the speedway. The reason for the rally is racing, however. Although we have been to the Daytona 200 many times, we have always missed the flat track racing for one reason or another. The series now known as AFT American Flat Track was run on a new course inside the Daytona International Speedway. The track incorporated the famed Tri-Oval and a section of pit road. The course, wider and faster than ever before, included a 150-foot jump section and at 6 feet, the tallest jump AFT riders will experience all season long. Races begin from a dead start and turn one of this course quickly becomes a very tight traffic jam. There are two qualifying heats in each class taking the top nine riders to complete the starting field of eighteen riders in each of the two mains. Dan Bromley on a KTM 450 SX-F was the winner of the 15 lap singles main and defending series champ, Jared Mees, on an Indian FTR750 was the winner of the 25 lap twins main. If you have never seen a flat track race I would encourage you to do so. For that matter if you come to Daytona Bike Week any year take in the AMA Supercross, AFT or the Daytona 200. They represent the history of the Rally and something I believe you should experience at least once. www.americanflattrack.com www.amasupercross.com

OHIO BIKE WEEK NEW CONCENTRATED, HIGHER OCTANE FORMULA FOR 2018 For years, Ohio Bike Week has been the undisputed LARGEST MOTORCYCLE EVENT IN THE MIDWEST and the unofficial kick-off to the summer riding season. It has evolved into one of the largest rallies in the nation, with events and rides ranging from Toledo to Sandusky. For 2018, rally organizers however have decided to make a change and shorten the official length of the program from 10 days to 6 straight days of nonstop ridin’ and rockin!’ Of the major national Rallies, Ohio Bike Week is one of the few that has sought to provide two full weekends – 10 days – of programming. Many of the big rallies don’t even do a full week – instead focusing on just a single weekend. It takes a lot to put on a large-scale rally and the expenses go far beyond the big-name entertainment on stage. The operational and support staff, emergency services, and all of the logistical considerations and expenses add up for every day that the event is hosted. Many of these expenses add up regardless of the number of people attending or if an event is rained out.

36

For many, the Rally was just too long. Few people can afford to take a full 10 days off work or away from home, so most riders were forced to choose between one weekend or another. There were also always a few “down days” – usually Monday and Tuesday, where there really wasn’t much going on. By tightening the schedule to a concentrated 6 days – it eliminates the dead days and allows the organizers to focus their energy and resources to really blowing it out in one extended weekend. “The shortened format removes some of the weekdays that have been slow in past years. It is our hope that we have the same or even more people that have been previously split up over 10 days; now packed in to the new six-day format” says Brad Stofcheck of Ohio Bike Week. While the overall rally has shortened, the Downtown BLOCK PARTY has actually expanded with the addition of Sunday – running Thursday, May 24th through Sunday, May 27th. “The expanded WorldFamous Block Party is gonna be incredible. It’s as though we have two “Saturdays” to throw this huge party on - with Monday being a holiday” says Brad Stofcheck of Ohio Bike Week.

Kicking Things Up! OBW has really worked to create the best possible experience throughout the downtown Block Party and at the Mad River Campus as they kick things up for the single holiday weekend. With the change, the Organizers expect to attract larger vendors, including a motorcycle service center AND have brought back more Street Performers – to include walking magicians and other craziness; as well as more fireworks to add more excitement simply to the rally areas. For entertainment, Bike Week has gone with a series of headlining National Acts that they can offer FREE OF CHARGE as part of the Block Party – supported by the very best in regional and touring acts. Fuel, Jackyl, Jack Russell’s Great White, Phil Vassar, and the Kentucky Headhunters get top billing – while popular acts such as Mustang Sally, Jasmine Cain, Ekoostik Willy, and Billy Morris – formerly of Warrant, fill out the main stages. Some of the best performers from throughout the Midwest round the schedule – including the Earthquakers, Jessica Hannan, Red Ball Jets, Sunset Strip, Tight Wadd, Whiskey Kings, Michael Weber, Eric Sowers Band, and many more! As always things will rock throughout the rally – but this year, ALL SHOWS ARE FREE! (A limited number of VIP tickets and ALL ACCESS PASSES are available at OhioBikeWeek.com)

Over the years, the Jack Daniel’s Barrel House Saloon located right on the water has evolved into the Official Bar and undisputed PARTY CENTRAL of Bike Week. It’s always a great time with the friendliest staff and a great crowd – with the best views in town from the surrounding patios. “The Jack Daniel’s Barrel House Saloon is proud to be a title sponsor of Ohio Bike Week this year. Each year the Barrel House continues to get better and better with added permanent restrooms, a huge waterside patio and some of the best live entertainment found at the rally; this is one spot you’ll want to stop by and check out!” Says General Manager Carl Coyne One of the most popular traditions – especially with those that enjoy taking pictures of the bikes – is the Founders Day Parade from Roeders in Monroeville. A seemingly endless line of motorcycles comes rolling into town Saturday afternoon and is certainly a sight to see. “We try very hard to maintain tradition and loyalty to what has made our rally one of the best in the country. The Founder’s Day Parade will once again happen on Saturday afternoon and we hope to make it one of the biggest ever” says Brad Stofcheck of Ohio Bike Week

Schedule Changes The popular Kelleys Island Ride has moved to Thursday, but still features the Ferry over to the island and then a Dice Run to some popular stops there. “The Kelleys Island Dice Run goes over to one of the area’s best hidden secrets. Check out the character of the island, win great prizes and hear awesome live music at the final stop - The Casino”, says Steve Ernst of Ohio Bike Week The World Famous OBW Pool Party and Bikini Contest, which we host, has been moved to Friday afternoon, but will still be held at the Comfort Inn – which has proven to be an ideal location for the annual event. This year there will be even more prize money – including more fun for the guys with the Cannonball contest! We’ve also heard that there will be even more going on throughout the week at the Comfort Inn, so stay tuned. The OBW Bike Show has been moved to Sunday and will be held downtown on the water! Thunder Roads will again be hosting the contest, but Bike Week has committed even more space and resources to this year’s show. Look for more even more show bikes as considerable CASH PRIZES are added to the mix – as well as making the show a qualifier for the TRO CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW and the over $10k in prize money there. With the show now downtown along the water and in the midst of everything, there is even more for everyone to do while their bikes are being admired. You can register in advance for the show at ThunderRoadsOhio.com and all pre-registered bike exhibitors get a FREE T-shirt this year!

Accommodations

One of the most cost-effective means of attending the rally is to avoid the high hotel costs and camp instead. For many, this makes the experience as you’re able to relax with others and really “escape” for the rally. This year primitive and RV camping will again be offered at the Erie County Fairgrounds by Ohio Bike Week as the Official Campground. The fairgrounds will have its own bar with live entertainment and adult contests. Pricing will be competitive with anything else in the area – and it’s the only location with Bike Week events happening on site! You can find out more about the Fairgrounds and reserve your camping spot at OhioBikeWeek.com

Stay tuned for more updates on our Facebook page and online blog (ThunderRoadsOhio.com). We will be publishing the full schedule with all the major events in our May Edition which serves as THE OFFICIAL RALLY GUIDE for OHIO BIKE WEEK. One clear bonus for those attending the rally in regards to the change in dates is that there are a lot more options for accommodations. The last several years a number of other events have moved onto the second weekend in Sandusky and have competed for rooms with those attending the rally. This has resulted in a shortage of rooms over the Block Party Weekend. This year, with the change, there are a lot more rooms available over the holiday weekend.

Sport Touring Corner By Norm Kern, TRO Contributor

Group Riding, Sport-Touring Style Part Two: Finding the Right Riding Group for You Last month we talked about the concept of sport-touring group riding and how it differs from the more common large and social group riding style. We explained the advantage of having many small groups with a variety of riding styles to choose from. This month we’ll discuss some individual rider preferences that can help you find individuals and groups that fit your own style, plus we’ll explain what to expect at a typical Motorcycle Sport Touring Association (MSTA) event. The first step is to think about your own preferences and the range of what you are willing to accept in others. Then when you meet a potential riding partner, you can more easily predict whether the two (or more) of you are likely to enjoy riding together. Here’s a list that covers the important stuff: 1. Overall pace 2. Passing 3. “Chicken Strip” width 4. Dragging foot pegs in corners 5. Stops 6. Waiting at turns 7. Passing the leader 8. Miscellaneous stuff

Riders with similar answers to this list will probably enjoy riding together. Here’s a set of typical responses from a sport-touring rider: 1. Overall pace- 10mph over the limit or less on rural highways, sometimes a bit more on low speed limit country roads. 2. Passing- Will occasionally pass extremely slow traffic on yellow line if visibility, traffic and other conditions permit. That doesn’t include blind hills, curves and populated areas. 3. “Chicken Strip” width- Chicken strips are the area at the outer edges of the tread that remain unused on an otherwise worn tire. In general, the faster one rides in corners, the greater the lean and narrower the chicken strips. For example, if one rider’s chicken strips are 1/4” wide and the others are 1” wide, they will be less likely to enjoy riding together than if both were about the same.

4. Drag foot pegs in corners- Brief touch once or twice per day. 5. Stops- Usually one bathroom break in the morning. Leisurely one hour+ stop for a nice lunch and fuel. Take a bathroom break in the afternoon before returning to the finish. 6. Waiting at turns- Collect at stop signs, route turns and intersections. In places where there is no room to collect, the group reverts to individual riders waiting until the next rider catches up. Each rider is responsible for the one behind them. 7. Passing the leader- If you pass the leader, you are on your own for navigation and finding your way back to the group. 8. Miscellaneous stuff- On hot days, prefer to start earlier, stop less in order to reach the finish before the hottest part of the day. Will consider shortening or skipping the lunch break to get back early to avoid extreme heat or approaching storms.

OHIO’S MOTORCYCLE MOTORCYCLE MAGAZINE MAGAZINE OHIO’S

From the list and the above response, you can see that answering the questions for yourself clarifies your own preferences as well as making you more aware of what to look for in others. If you embrace the sport-touring style, the best place to find the kind of riders and fun roads you’re looking for is at Motorcycle Sport Touring Association (MSTA) events. MSTA is a strong supporter of motorcycle safety, which includes gear, riding skills and motorcycle maintenance, so if you’re planning to attend any MSTA rides or rallies, here are some important guidelines: Proper Gear: Showing up for a MSTA ride in anything less than full gear will probably make you feel out of place. Although there is no formal rule, proper gear for a MSTA ride includes a DOT approved full face helmet, textile or leather motorcycle jacket and pants, full-fingered protective gloves, and over the ankle boots, preferably designed specifically for motorcycle riding.

If you need to stop, be it for gas, an issue with the bike or gear or to rest, let someone know. Blue tooth communicators are even better than hand signals and are very popular with MSTA riders.

asking! A casual rider in a group of sport riders will not enjoy the ride.

Ride in a staggered formation. Riding beside someone takes away a possible “out” for both of you if a situation arises.

Excessive speed- Be particularly careful about speed when going through the small towns most of our rides take you through.

Riding consistently beyond your abilities is not fun and will eventually lead to an accident. The point is to enjoy the ride, so stay within your limits.

“Stunting” will not be tolerated! Riding a wheelie or other such conduct is reason to immediately exclude you from a ride.

The most important thing is to enjoy your ride. Regardless of how many people are in your group, it is still your ride. Ride Safe and Have Fun...

Riding Styles: Riding styles vary as well. Some are tourers, some are sport riders, some are casual riders. Try to get in a group that fits your preferred riding style. It’s as simple as

Motorcycle Maintenance: Check your tires BEFORE you leave home, so you don’t wind up with bald tread or cord showing. Your safety and the safety of those around you are at risk. Also, a bike in disrepair is more likely to break down. No one wants to spend their day towing someone home because of a poorly maintained bike. Straight pipes or much louder than normal exhausts are frowned on. Riding Skills: Riding skills and styles vary widely among MSTA members. Some are new to motorcycling, some have been on a bike 40+ years, others are former racers and current track day junkies. We even have some members who are MSF instructors. Whatever your skill level, you are welcome to participate, but we ask that you keep a few things in mind: Ride at your own pace that is comfortable for you. Faster riders will wait at the next stop or route turn for you. If a rider is noticeably faster than you, give them room to pass when it is safe. This will alleviate the feeling that you need to ride faster, possibly beyond your skills. Use hand signals to keep other riders informed. If there is an obstacle in the road, warn the riders behind you. If you decide to drop out of a ride early, make sure someone else in the group knows. MSTA Calendar for April: April 6-8, 2018 Norm & Doug’s Dual-Sport Just-For-Fun Event, Dillard, GA- A weekend of fairly easy Dual-Sport riding. Mostly two-track, lots of gravel, some rocks, some dirt. Soil in this area is sandy/loamy and drains quickly so there isn’t much slippery mud. That said, there are areas that do not favor the large over 1000cc bikes. Weather should be mild/cool. We have a group rate for the host hotel. Visit http://msta-se.com/Dillard%20DS%202018.pdf for additional info. April 12-15, 2018 Staunton Spring Romp Just-For-Fun Event, Staunton, VA- An excellent location for motorcycle riders to gather and launch rides through the beautiful Virginia and West Virginia mountains and valleys. Both street and dual sport riding are available for your enjoyment. Visit http://msta-se.com/2018%20Staunton.pdf for additional info. April 20-22, 2018 North Georgia Classic Just-For-Fun Event, Helen, GA- Offers many great roads to ride and places to visit in the area, including the Two Wheels Only motorcycle resort in nearby Suches, GA. If you want to ride Georgia route 60, Cherohala Skyway, the Dragon, etc, this is the best MSTA event of the year for access to those great roads. Visit http://msta-se.com/helen/ for more info. TRO CROWNS A NEW CHAMPION With over 1 million square feet of filled display space and over 1,000 custom and vintage vehicles on display, the 2018 I-X Piston Powered Auto-Rama easily is the largest show of its type in the country – if not the world. And once again, the “Piston Power Show” delivered – serving up an incredible show and the crowds came out to support it. With over 50,000 paid admissions, the show increased attendance by 9.1% over last year’s show and approximately 43% over the first year it was launched it in its new format, back in 2013 – combining the Piston Powered Show (previously held in the Fall) and the Auto-Rama. Since our launch, Thunder Roads Ohio has been involved in the Piston Power Show – and since last year, it has served as the culmination of our Championship Bike Show Series. We’ve helped coordinate and select the motorcycles for the Thunder Zone – motorcycle aspect of the show. This year we had more than 50 bikes enter the show as winners of 2017 TRO Championship Bike Shows – and more than another 60 were selected as the best of the best, from applications submitted. The final roster had bikes from all across the country and even Canada.

Lead Judge this year for Motorcycles was none other than Bill Steele, a Certified Judge and owner of Steele Kustoms. His bike – The Blue Baller – was the Easyrider Bike of the Year in 2014. process started with classifying each of the bikes in accordance with the ISCA Rule Book and the classes outlined there. In some cases, this was a new process for some of the builders; but the Judges were available to discuss the classifications and Rule Books were available for builders and exhibitors to review. Thunder Roads Ohio was not involved in any aspect of the Bike Judging beyond assisting with the review and acceptance of applicants for the show. Once the bikes arrived and were displayed on the show floor, TRO was removed from the process and the ISCA Team took over. The TRO Crew coordinated the voting and awarded the People’s Choice Award, which was sponsored by Find It Now – GPS Security Systems.

This is the second year that “Lenny” has crafted a unique ring that boldly captured the spirit of the show. “I wanted to make something really bold and edgy, but still classic in it’s appearance,” stated “Lenny” Strnad. And for the second year in a row, Vivid delivered exactly that. $50 Lifestyle Change So. I had just finalized my divorce and I was a little broken. I had a huge list of things in my head I wanted to do now that there was no one to tell me “no”. One of which was to buy a motorcycle. I have many friends that ride. I was always envious of their adventures and the attention they always seemed to draw. I didn’t know anything about riding, let alone what kind of bike I would be able to start on. One of my friends suggested Motorcycle Ohio Rider Education. I could learn to ride in one weekend and the bikes were provided. I could see if it was something I could handle without the huge risk of buying a bike. I went to the BMV and got my motorcycle temps then immediately went on the Motorcycle Ohio website and signed up for a class near me. I got to the classroom early Thursday evening with my riding gear and there was a full class. We introduced ourselves and there were riders of every age and skill level. I myself had never ridden one and I was surprised at how many others had not also. The instructors were welcoming, helpful and knowledgeable. We were asked to return on Saturday morning for day 1 of the motorcycle range exercises. I am not going to lie, I was nervous. I went home, watched videos on You Tube, and studied as much as I could. I arrived early on Saturday morning and the bikes were already out and idling. I chose a bike I thought felt comfy and next thing I knew we were halfway

through our day. It went by so fast. After a few different drills, you could not have smacked the big, dumb smile off my face. I was RIDING! By the end of the day I was so happy and I felt like I had a reasonable amount of confidence on that machine. Sunday morning came and I had butterflies. It was day 2 of range exercises and that meant it was evaluation day. After we got started, we ran through some more drills and practiced the basics we learned the day before. When the drills were finished the rider coaches lined us all up for our evaluations. I made a few mistakes but the coach told me to shake that off and continue. I did, and to my surprise when they handed out the cards, I had passed! I had my motorcycle endorsement and I learned so much about riding safely. I felt more than ready to begin shopping for my new bike. Best fifty bucks I ever spent. BUYING A USED OFF-ROAD BIKE Spring is a time to get out on the road and off – and often times we find ourselves looking for deals on something “new to us” to take off onto the trails with. So we thought we’d share this great piece from RockyMountainATVmc.com.

The Early Stages: Know Your Budget

Ever make a purchase that you thought was a steal only to find out once you brought it home that the quality wasn’t quite what you expected? It is no fun – especially if your apparent steal of a deal was a newly purchased used dirt bike.

Before you even start looking for a bike, figure out exactly how much you are willing to spend and set a budget. Make sure that you plan not only for the cost of the bike, but also leave a little wiggle room in your budget for any parts that will need to be replaced immediately in order to safely ride the bike. If you have your eye on any aftermarket products, set some cash aside for those as well. Do Your Homework! Research may very well be the most important stage on your quest for finding a good used dirt bike. Get a pretty solid idea of the makes and models you prefer and then figure out which of those is going to work best for your riding style, your skill, your size, and your price range. Once you’ve kind of narrowed down what you are interested in, study up and learn as much about that bike as you can. Look into forums to see what people like or dislike about that model, any known issues the bike might have, how they handle, how they ride, and any useful tweaks or fixes others have found to be effective. Becoming somewhat of an expert on the model will be an advantage when you actually get to the inspecting and test riding stage, because you will know what you need to look for when you go see the bike.

This bike needed a little more work than we thought. A fair amount of mechanical and logical knowledge is generally required if you want to come away with a worthwhile purchase – specifically in this case, a decent dirt bike that you’ll enjoy and that will work well for you. So what do you need to know or look for when it comes to finding a good used bike? We’ve got a couple of resources for you to take a look at. First, check out the video for some of the steps and details Jay Clark pays attention to when on the hunt for a dirt bike. Then after the video, check out the tips and suggestions we’ve outlined to help you through the buying process so you can ultimately secure yourself a great used bike. If You’ve Already Bought Your Bike… If you’ve come across this post and you’ve already picked up a used bike, watch the part 2 video below for some advice on what to do next. We cover more of the in-depth inspection and maintenance procedures that should get done before you start riding along with some general tips and tricks for getting used to a new bike and familiarizing yourself with it. Check it out and drop any questions you have in the comments below. 56 56

Websites like Craigslist, NADA, and Kelly Blue Book can give you a good idea of average and recommended selling prices; however, keeping an eye on actual prices in your area may give you the best idea of what you can expect to pay. It is a good idea to be watching the classifieds several weeks before you are ready to buy. Different areas might be selling the same bike for a higher price, so decide if you are willing to travel if you find a good deal. Finding a Bike: Don’t Be in a Hurry Be smart and wait for the right bike. You want to make sure that you’ll be happy with the bike that you get. You might end up resenting your purchase if you moved too quick or purchased the bike because you felt pressured to buy. There will always be another bike, so don’t jump the gun. Get a Feel for the Seller and Area There is no sense in putting yourself in a bad situation, so it is good to at least feel the seller out a little before you go. If you have only talked to the seller via text message, giving them a call isn’t a bad idea. It can help you get a feel for who you will be dealing with, and even give you the chance to ask some prequalifying questions before you decide to head over and check out the bike. Bringing a friend along with you is also recommended.

Knowing the area the seller wants to meet in beforehand is also a good idea. Sketchy areas should definitely be handled with caution, if not just avoided altogether. If you feel uneasy, ask them to meet you somewhere public. If they won’t, it’s probably a sign you should keep looking. Inspecting the Bike Put all your research to the test when you go and inspect the bike. You may have learned some potential problems with the model, so in part, you know some specifics to look for. Here are some other questions you might want to ask:  Why are you selling the bike?  Have you had any major problems with the machine?  What maintenance have you done to the machine and when? Do you have records?  How long have you owned it? (Caution if a flip situation.)  How many hours or races are on the machine?  Have you had any major crashes? If so, what damage was sustained?  Do you have the title for the bike, and is it in your name?

The following things are good to check as well:  Check to see if the suspension has been re-valved. Most the time if it has, the company’s decals will be present on the forks and shocks. You’ll just want to know what it was set up for, because it can be pretty pricey if you need to re-valve it again to work for you.  Check the bike for signs of usage. Some indicators include:  Condition of the frame, clutch cover, magneto cover, etc. The more the paint is rubbed off, the more use the bike has had.  Check the wear on the shifter knurling, foot peg teeth, and brake pedal teeth. Again, the more worn down they are, the more use the bike has had.  Condition of the sprockets and chain.  Ask the owner if you can take a look at the air filter. If you can, pull the filter and see if there is dirt/sand in the air boot. If it isn’t properly taken care of, it could be a sign of trouble. If dirt has gotten into the engine the bike could have some expensive repairs coming in the future.  Give it a test ride, if the owner allows. Make sure the bike shifts through all the gears, that the clutch isn’t slipping, and that there aren’t any strange rattles or noises.  Check the coolant to see if it is full and clean, and pull the dipstick or oil filler plug to check the condition of the oil, if the owner allows. Both can show you signs of good or poor maintenance.  Check the VIN number. Make sure it has one and looks legitimate because if it doesn’t, you are quite possibly looking at a stolen bike.

“Like New!!! This bike has very little hours on it, has only been trail ridden, and has been babied since the showroom floor. The bike has never been raced and I always used a skid plate. Need to sell because I don’t ride much…” “Bike has been regularly maintained…”

Inspect the bike thoroughly to see if the machine has any broken Bring a Friend or missing parts. If you would like, you can also ask the owner not We briefly mentioned this earlier, but it’s always a good idea to to start the bike before you come. A cold start can give you an bring a friend with you when you go check out a bike. There are idea of how the bike runs, as well as the condition of the battery. two main reasons for this. The first, mentioned above, is to help Be Courteous to the Seller keep you safe. The old adage that “there is safety in numbers” still rings true today. The second reason is that a friend will usually help Make it easy on the seller by being kind. Don’t be rude or act like you stay levelheaded by not rushing into a purchase, or making a know-it-all. People are more willing to work with someone who decisions you might later regret. is kind, courteous and respectful. Let them know what you are willing to spend on the bike, but be fair. Don’t try and lowball the Good Luck! seller on the price. You’re well prepared now to start the search for your new used If the seller sounds like they are under 18, ask to talk with their bike. Just remember, set a budget, do your homework and then get parents to make sure they have permission to sell and that the out there and start checking out bikes. Follow your instincts and parents will be there to sign the title if you purchase the bike. you’ll eventually come across the bike that will be perfect for you and your riding style. Good luck, and we’ll see you on the trails! Trust Your Gut If a situation or sale feels bad or wrong, it probably is. Trusting your gut on these situations can go a long way. WEED CONTROL Can you smell that spring air? This is typically the time of year I write about all the Dandelion Clubs. You know, the ones that pop up every spring like “rag” weeds. I think I might confidently be able to report that for the most part, that ship has finally sailed. And thank the heavens above! You may be wondering what I’m talking about if you haven’t been reading this column for the past several years. I’m talking about the two or three buddies who all bought motorcycles and decided to call all their friends, cousins, brothers, sisters, etc and buy the same patch online and call themselves a motorcycle club. Of course the one whos idea it was gets to be “President”. It’s his garage after all which makes him the most qualified of course and he’s even seen every MC episode of Gangland! It seems that finally with the conclusion of the made for TV bike shows like SOA & Laughing Devils, the novelty is hopefully in the rear view mirror and those garaged low miles never ridden scooters have flooded the used bike market. Husbands are back at home with their wives and kids on the weekends doing yard work. The weeds have been pulled.I know, I know, I’ve heard the argument. “I’m an American! It’s my right to do whatever I want”. Blah blah blah. I’ve heard every cry baby argument ever made that many Fake & Poser MC Not Real Clubs have hung their hat on nationwide. That attitude is a primary reason why they shouldn’t be wearing a patch in the first place. Everyone doesn’t get a trophy, and everyone shouldn’t wear an MC Patch. The truth is I know a lot of folks who have left clubs in the past 12 months. I know a lot of clubs that have totally dissolved in the past 24 months and those people are much happier. It’s not that some don’t still love to ride and will continue to do so, but see they were never in a Real MC to begin with no matter what they sewed on their back. They were in a volunteer social organization with too many rules. 62

When you take something you enjoy, and make it work it’s not always so much fun anymore. I can tell you from current first hand knowledge and experience; it’s very often the opposite of fun.

ever teach them, “If you’re going to do something, it’s worth doing it right”. These are the same people giving away participation trophies at their local schools. It’s pathetic.

But see the MC lifestyle was not born out of a desire to have “fun”. It was built often times on pure necessity and survival. You might think that’s not the case this day and age but I assure you it is still as viable today as it was 60+ years ago. Am I in a gang? No. People and most often law enforcement like to use that excuse to validate their profiling of every club wearing a matching t-shirt or rag. It’s simply not true. Do I need that type of negative labeling in my life? No I don’t. To the opposite, I probably jeopardize much by even participating and wearing a diamond, so why do I? It’s simple. I love it. Is every “MC Brother” real? No, they aren’t. You just never know because it’s a very large membership. But in enjoying it, I don’t get to make up my own rules, MC Protocols, and MC History. I respect the past; I don’t attempt to disrespect it by making up our own total BS rules to accommodate not following club protocols like many poser associations do. That’s the complete opposite of what it means to even live the lifestyle. I guess some people’s grandparents didn’t

The riding season is just beginning for many of you. Enjoy it this year. Shed away the dumb $hi% and just enjoy your motorcycle. Enjoy the rowdy events and rallies. That’s actually what it means to be a biker. Being a clubber is a totally different obligation that should be left to those that have earned the respect to carry on the tradition. Ohio Bike Week, Lima Bike Rally, Chillicothe Rodeo, Sturgis, Daytona, Myrtle Beach, leathers, sexy women, debauchery, loud pipes, kicking up dirt, blasting down the highway or leaning into the curves of a country road, awesome bands and great food. That’s what it’s all about folks… Enjoy it and don’t be a weed in the garden. Enjoy your summer, and thanks for reading. I appreciate ya! My Road name is “Tabasco” and I approve this message. BUCKEYE FIREARMS REPORT 4 Tips for Picking the Right Concealed-Carry Pistol by Sheriff Jim Wilson People interested in getting their first defensive handgun may be a bit overcome when they walk into a gun shop and look at the vast assortment of handguns that are available today. Further, they can easily become confused by the advice, wellmeaning though it may be, offered by the clerk behind the counter. These folks should understand that many of us who have carried defensive handguns for years have tried an assortment of different guns before settling on what works best for us. Here are some ideas that might help these new folks shorten their search for the defensive handgun that suits them best. 1. The pistol should fit your hand. You should be able to grip the handgun so that it is centered in the web between your thumb and index finger. The barrel and top edge of the handgun should be in a straight line with your wrist and forearm. When the pistol is in this position, your trigger finger should be able to easily rest on the face of the trigger. This not only allows for a sure grip on the pistol, but it also is an aid in accurate shooting.

2. The controls on the pistol should be easy to reach and in what, for you, is a logical position. This is important because, with practice, the defensive shooter must be able to operate those controls virtually without looking at them. Attention will be on the threat and the operation of the defensive handgun should be second nature. 3. Some guns have several external safety devices, some guns don’t have any. Some guns are effectively carried with the hammer cocked and the safety on, others have the hammer down. Some guns don’t have a visible hammer at all. If a particular 64 64

we find what really suits us. Just stay with quality and avoid the fads. What is currently popular is of no concern if it doesn’t fit you and meet your needs. Your search for a defensive handgun is definitely not going to be boring. Along the way, you’ll shoot some great guns, meet some of the greatest people in America and come away with a joy for the shooting sports. Good hunting and good luck.

style doesn’t seem safe to you, don’t buy it. With practice and experience, you may change your mind at a later date, but there is no reason to start out with a pistol that makes you nervous. I would quickly point out that all quality-made handguns can be carried and operated safely. The operator (that is you) must know how to do this with a particular type of handgun and must have confidence in that ability. 4. The final test is in the actual shooting of the prospective defensive purchase. If the gun really fits you, you should be able to learn to draw it quickly, get on target quickly and deliver accurate shots to the target. When fighting for your life, it is likely that you will have to fire multiple shots at the attacker. For this reason, the gun should be of a caliber and weight that allows you to manage the recoil and quickly get back on target.

I wish it were simple enough to be able to call up the local gun shop and say, “I’m 5-foot, 10-inches tall, weigh 170 pounds and am 35 years old. What kind of defensive handgun should I get?” Sadly, that is not the case. We often have to try a number of defensive systems before

The rides will be hosted by Thunder Roads Ohio Magazine in partnership with local ranges, ride stops, and sponsors throughout Ohio and is aimed at supporting the Buckeye Firearms Foundation and their FASTER Saves Lives Program to train teachers and others to better protect our children – as well as local NRA programs. The cost of the ride is $25 and includes a t-shirt for each full participant registering in advance. Non-shooting passengers are just $10 – and are still entered in the prize drawings. Those 16 and younger can ride free, but cannot shoot or participate in the prize drawings. All shooting ride participants will be required to show a valid CCW permit upon registration. Riders are not required to take part in the shooting aspect of the ride and are invited to still join in support of their constitutional rights and the work that Buckeye Firearms and the NRA do. Registration and additional information is available through www.ThunderRoadsOhio.com Rides and stops are still being determined. Work is underway to coordinate rides in a number of cities, throughout Ohio and we anticipate most of the rides being held in June and July. If you own a gun range, shop, or other potential Ride Stop, please reach out as soon as possible for additional information at ThunderRoadsOhio@gmail.com Ride Sponsorships are also available, email for more information. This is a dry run, without any alcohol, and any participants considered to be under the influence or not adhering to ride guidelines in any way will be excused without refund at the discretion of the ride organizers or those hosting stops. It is the responsibility of all participants to ensure that they are adhering to all proper laws and guidelines governing both the handling of firearms and operation of motor vehicles.

RECIPES

Hot Potato Corn Chowder

2 tsp. ground mustard

“Every so often at a poker run I’ll spot a simple, classic bike. Uncluttered by added chrome and accessories, it’s almost like sculpture. I also enjoy foods that have a straightforward, down-home taste. Nothing fancy, just food that makes me feel comfortable and secure. This soup always gives me that feeling. After a big steaming bowl, you will feel that all is right with the world.” Biker Billy

1 tsp. ground garlic

4 cups parboiled potatoes, peeled, or 2 (16-ounce) cans whole peeled potatoes, drained

3 tablespoons salted butter

2 fresh long slim red cayenne peppers, stemmed

1 medium onion, coarsely chopped

1 (12-ounce) can whole kernel corn, drained

1 cup water

2 cups whole milk or half-and-half

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon ground black pepper

Full Throttle Herb & Spice Mix 4 tsp. dried parsley 4 tsp. dried dill weed

1 tsp. cayenne Mix together and store in an airtight container or spice jar with lid. Shake before using. Use in any recipe. Tastes wonderful on meats, pastas, eggs, frittatas, breakfast hash, sweet potatoes and more. Organic ingredients provide better nutrition and flavor.

We called this “Full throttle” because the combination fires up your “engines.”

Submitted by Kristina N, Wayne Ohio. TRO T-shirt on it’s way!

Have a recipe that you’d like to share? Write it all down and send with a picture – to ThunderRoadsOhio@gmail.com Put RECIPE in the subject line. If we use it, we’ll send you copies of the magazines and a TRO T-Shirt – so include your address and t-shirt size as well! Thanks! - The Iron Cowboy

Cut the potatoes into 3/4 inch chunks and set aside. In a large soup pot, melt the butter over low heat. Add the whole peppers and saute for 1 to 2 minutes. Add the onion and the potatoes, stir well to coat with butter, increase the heat to medium, and saute until the onions turn golden brown, 5 to 8 minutes. Mash the potatoes into smaller, bite-sized chunks. Add the corn, water, milk, salt, and black pepper. Stir well and reduce the heat to low. Cover and simmer for 1 hour, stirring often to keep the corn from sticking to the bottom of the pot. Remove the

cayenne peppers before serving. Makes About 4 Servings

TRO Serving Suggestion – Kick the recipe up with bacon and cheese on top.

FUNNY STUFF BECAUSE EVERYONE NEEDS A GOOD LAUGH NOW AND THEN...

Panda Dinner Etiquette A Panda bear walks into a restaurant. He orders a meal and eats it. After politely paying for his meal, he pulls out a gun and shoots it in the air. He immediately walks out the door. “Why did you do that?” hollered the confused waitress. Looking back over his shoulder the panda says “I’m a panda”. “Look it up in the dictionary.” The waitress locates the dictionary on her bosses desk and searches for the definition of panda bear. Finding it she reads, “Panda Bear - A large black and white bear like mammal native to the far east. Eats shoots and leaves.” Drunk Guy

A Highway Patrolman waited outside a popular biker bar, hoping for a bust. At closing time everyone come out and he spotted his potential quarry. The man was so obviously drunk that he could barely walk. He stumbled around the parking lot for a few minutes, looking for his motorcycle. After trying his keys on five other bikes, he finally found his own bike. He sat on his motorcycle in a good ten minutes, as the other patrons left. He turned his lights on, then off, and again on and off. He started his engine and pull forward into the grass, then stopped. Finally, he pulled out onto the road and started to drive away. The patrolman, waiting for this, turned on his lights and pulled the man over. He administered the breathalyzer test, and to his great surprise, the man blew a 0.00. The patrolman was dumbfounded. “This equipment must be broken!” he exclaimed. “I doubt it,” said the man, “You see, tonight I am the designated decoy… I haven’t had a drink all day!”w

A guy walks into a bar with a giraffe and says, “A beer for me, and one for the giraffe, please.” So they proceed to drink. Then: “...a shot for me and one for the giraffe, too” And they keep drinking all evening. Finally the giraffe passes out on the floor of the bar. The guy pays the tab and gets up to leave. The bartender shouts out, “Hey! You’re not going to leave that lying on the floor, are you?” The guy replies “That’s not a lion... it’s a giraffe.
