FULL OF INFORMATION (Re: Issue 222 — When Every Second Counts) Thank you for a very informative read in your past issue. The article about how Good Sam hospital was founded was excellent. Also, as someone who has benefitted from Rabbi Kahan’s help, I’d like to extend a thank you to him. May you never need his help, but if you do, he’s there for you! F.M.

(Re: Being the Bridge, Issue 222) After looking through your list of hospital liaisons, I was surprised to note that a local hospital and its liaison were missing from the list. Therefore, I’d like to share the very relevant information that the liaison for Nyack Hospital is Rabbi Reuven Shimon Austerlitz, and that he can be reached at 845-825-7000. people were shaking their heads while reading the article and thinking, “Isn’t this common knowledge? Do people actually have to be told to move away when an emergency medical vehicle arrives?” But sadly, we actually can’t take it for granted that everyone naturally has these inclinations. Being a sibling of a family member with medical issues, I know too well the pain of having the whole neighborhood around my parents’ home as my sibling is whisked away by Hatzoloh. I know what it feels like when nosy neighbors ask what happened. Do I ask you what happened when I see you running after a missed bus? What makes it acceptable after a Hatzoloh visit? A Hurt Sibling

A CHANGE TO BE AWARE OF (Re: Just What the Doctor Ordered, Issue 222) I loved your article about the history of Good Sam Hospital. I’d like to make local residents aware that there is a new hospital policy under which patients admitted may not be overseen by their primary care doctor. Instead, the hospital employs hospitalists who oversee their care. That being the case, patients should make sure to have somebody advocating strongly on their behalf about the care that they might need, since a hospitalist doesn’t necessarily know a patient or their medical history that well. Anyone who is admitted following a procedure should make sure that the admitting doctor will be overseeing their care. Anonymous

WHAT SIMMERS ON MY STOVE (Re: Super Soups, Issue 120) After putting up a pot of the same soup for the sixth or seventh time, I decided it’s time to drop you a line. You had delicious recipes for velvety red lentil soup and for cream of lima soup a while back, and those are my favorite soups. I keep making them again and again and stock up my freezer with them. I really appreciate your recipes every week and will be glad to try the new soups you featured this month. Still, I think those two soups should be reprinted, since they are winners, and it would be a pity for anyone to lose out. Hearty Cook

Parshas

Vayeira By: Malka Schneps

“I’ve been invited to join the Rosh Yeshivah’s Circle,” confided Mendy to his friends Yehudah, Avi and Yossi. The Rosh Yeshivah’s Circle was a small, exclusive group of bachurim who learned together every day and enjoyed a private shiur with their rosh yeshivah once a week. “It’s a tremendous honor, but it comes with a price. On the one hand, it would be an amazing opportunity to deepen my learning and to develop a closer relationship with the rosh yeshivah. On the other hand, I would really miss my friends.” Avi and Yossi immediately spoke out against the idea, secretly fearing the changes in their relationship that would inevitably follow. They did not want to lose their friend, and they knew that no matter how good their intentions might be for maintaining their closeness, it was only a matter of time until their friendship would start fading into memory. They were also saddened to think that they would not have the same opportunity of developing a closer relationship with their rosh yeshivah. “Why would you want to join the Rosh Yeshivah’s

Circle?” questioned Avi. “I’ve heard that those bachurim have more rules than the regular talmidim. I don’t know if that’s for you.” “I agree,” chimed in Yossi. “Besides, weren’t you the one who always said a person should make learning a priority no matter what his circumstances? You don’t need to join that group to learn. Look at how well you’re learning now! How do you know you’ll learn just as well there? I say that if you’re doing so

Mendy to join the Rosh Yeshivah’s Circle, Yehudah was invited to join as well. Yehudah’s maggid shiur told him that they had narrowed the next selection down to a few bachurim, but when they heard how Yehudah had encouraged Mendy to join and why, they realized that Yehudah truly treasured learning for the right reasons and had the fine middos to put his friend’s needs ahead of his own. And this proved, more than anything, that he was the right candidate. This week’s parsha begins, “Vayeira eilav Hashem b’eilonei Mamrei… — Hashem appeared to him in the plains of Mamrei.” Rashi explains that Hashem appeared to Avraham Avinu in the plains of Mamrei because Mamrei was the one who advised Avraham to proceed with having a bris, whereas Aner and Eshkol had advised him against it. The Sfas Emes explains that Aner, Eshkol and Mamrei all realized that once Avraham would make a bris, he would be connected to Hashem in a special relationship that would, by default, exclude them — but only Mamrei rose above his feel-

well, you shouldn’t make any changes.” “I disagree,” asserted Yehudah. “Mendy, don’t let this opportunity slip away. I’ll miss you most, since we’re not only friends the longest, but also chavrusos… but I still think you should grab this amazing opportunity. The bachurim in the Rosh Yeshivah’s Circle really do shteig, and many of them go on to be big talmidei chachamim. I say go for it!” Not long after advising

ings to speak up for what was right. Similarly, many friends feel a twinge of pain when their friends get engaged, knowing that the special, exclusive relationship that their friend will soon develop with their spouse will exclude them. Their friend’s heart will now be bound to another in a very deep fashion that can allow no others entry. These left-behind friends sometimes even lament that their former best friend now seems to have little time for them. The exclusion is circumstantial, not personal, but it hurts. Even so, these friends do encourage one another to marry when the time comes, knowing it is right and wanting the best for their friends even at their own expense. This is what Mamrei did. Mamrei knew that Avraham would be leaving him behind once he joined into a special bris with Hashem, but he still encouraged Avraham to go forward. And it is for that very reason that Hashem revealed Himself to Avraham in Mamrei’s land. Mamrei was thus rewarded with not only the zechus of having Hashem’s revelation take place in his land, but also by having his name immortalized in the Torah. The Sfas Emes notes that Mamrei put Hashem’s honor before his own, and this brought Mamrei closer to Hashem — in accordance with the teaching of Chazal that a person who seeks to increase Hashem’s honor even at the expense of his own honor will see his own honor increased. Mamrei did not allow fear of loss or exclusion, nor jealousy, to cloud his advice to Avraham regarding the bris. The result was that Mamrei himself came closer to Hashem. We never lose out by doing what is right.

Walsh, Specht Win Big on Election Day

Good News in Ramapo as Audit Shows Financial Improvements

After another election season that had phones ringing off the hook with robocalls, the final results are in, with Rockland County looking at a new district attorney while the Town of Ramapo will be welcoming its incumbent supervisor back for another term. Judge Tom Walsh bested attorney Michael Diederich and Assemblyman Ken Zebrowski by a significant margin, winning just over 71 percent of the 68,276 votes cast in the race to elect Rockland’s next district attorney. Calling the level of secular education offered in chassidic schools a criminal act that he intended to prosecute, and denouncing the Town of Ramapo for alleged public corruption and favoritism, Diederich’s inflammatory rhetoric had the Monsey area’s Jewish community turning out in droves to support Walsh. In a statement released following the election, Walsh said that his message of treating everyone fairly had clearly resonated with county residents. “Everyone in Rockland County will be treated with fairness by the office of the district attorney, no matter their background,” said Walsh. “That is my pledge to the people of Rockland County who I now hope will come together and leave the politics of division behind.” A total of 24,923 votes were cast in the race for Ramapo supervisor, with incumbent Michael Specht easily fending off a challenge from Deborah Munitz, an activist who had long fought against overdevelopment and who announced her candidacy in mid-September. Reflecting on the elections, Specht, who won nearly 72 percent of the vote, expressed his gratitude to those who had voted for him. “I am honored and humbled that you have placed your trust in me,” said Specht. “With your support, we’ll continue to address the challenges facing our great town and to improve the quality of life in Ramapo.” Also emerging victorious in local races was a long list of incumbents including legislators Aron Wieder in District 13 and Itamar Yeger in District 4, Ramapo council members Michael Rossman and Brendel Logan-Charles, highway superintendent Fred Brinn and Spring Valley trustee Zach Clerina, with Yisroel Eisenbach winning his first term as a trustee for the Village of Spring Valley.

Once facing an almost $14 million deficit, things are looking up for the Town of Ramapo, according to financial audits for the years 2017 and 2018 whose findings were just recently made public. The Journal News reported that BST and Co., an independent auditor, released its findings just prior to Election Day, showing that the town applied a $3.1 million operating surplus toward lowering its staggering deficit in 2017, with another $3.3 million used in 2018 to reduce the total deficit to $7.4 million. The town recognized savings by eliminating thirteen jobs through retirements, leasing Spook Rock golf course to a private operator, purchasing local streetlights from Orange and Rockland and replacing them with LED fixtures, raising fees for non-resident users of town pools, and cutting expenses throughout various departments. Ramapo hopes to further chip away at the shortfall by selling the Tilcon quarry in Suffern in 2020. The property is appraised at $3 million, and the town’s 2020 budget allocates $2 million toward further reducing the deficit. Ramapo Supervisor Michael Specht held a press conference to release the findings of the audit, noting that he had not been aware of the enormity of the deficit when he took office and has worked hard to steer the town back toward fiscal health. “We’re proud that Ramapo’s financial turnaround is well underway and we have a clear road map for a full fiscal recovery,” said Specht.

Recap: In 2014, Joe Ludmir arrives in Bratislava for a visit. Binyamin gets used to his new job as shomer. One night, while he’s staying with a niftar, the deceased’s daughter approaches Binyamin. She asks him to hold on to a certain precious envelope for her until after the levayah. When Binyamin opened his eyes, his roommates had already left. He leaped out of bed groggily, washed his hands, and hurried to get ready. Somehow, he got through the morning in a hazy fog of exhaustion, though he did notice that Shabsi was nowhere to be seen. “What’s up with you, Potolsky?” his chavrusa, Zilberman, probed after a while. “You don’t look very with it today.” “Exhaustion,” Binyamin said, passing a hand over his forehead. This hadn’t happened the other times. He was an energetic person by nature, not someone who needed lots of sleep, and if he missed a night or half a night of sleep, he usually managed until he was able to catch up. “Looks like more than just exhaustion to me…” Zilberman studied him closely. “Your face is very red.” “Could be,” Binyamin said. He stood up. “I’m going to get a cup of water. I’ll be right back.” “What’s been going on at night that’s making you so tired?” “At night?” Binyamin echoed. “Nothing special.” Zilberman looked at him skeptically. Binyamin knew he’d have to tell him at one point; otherwise, Zilberman was likely to imagine all kinds of dreadful things his

chavrusa was up to at night. “Nothing special? And the night before?” “Really, nothing much.” Binyamin had already taken a step backward. “I went to learn someplace.” Let someone say that wasn’t true! He strode out of the beis midrash. Why did he have the feeling that this was happening to him now only because Yaakov had told him that he would yet see the damage these nights were causing him? Who had asked Yaakov to get involved? He would try to skip lunch and catch up on some sleep. Over the last month, he must have accumulated enough of a sleep deficit to make his body rebel. Energetic or not, Binyamin realized, he hadn’t slept for four nights over the past three and a half weeks, and it was probably taking its toll. Did that make Yaakov right? Wrong? Maybe he just needed to set some boundaries for himself. Just as he hadn’t been embarrassed to tell Shabsi that he could only do this job when the niftar was an elderly person, he could also tell him, with the same firmness, that he could only do it once in two weeks, at most once in a week and a half. Maybe that would help him in the future.

For now, though, he really needed to sleep. But when lunch break came, he couldn’t fall asleep. There was noise in the hallway, and after twenty minutes of tossing and turning, Binyamin decided that it was a waste of time. With glassy eyes, he tied his shoes and left the room. There was no point in trying to sleep, and there was probably no point in trying to get some food for himself in the lunchroom, because the tables were probably empty. Maybe he would just dash home to drop off his laundry and grab something to eat at the same time. ***** “Binyamin?” Elisheva looked worried. “Is everything all right? It’s good to see you, but I’m not used to seeing you home at this hour.” “Uh, yes.” He took off his jacket. “Baruch Hashem, everything is fine. But I didn’t manage to eat lunch in yeshivah, so I decided to come home now instead of after night seder.” “So come and eat,” his mother said. “Miri and Tzippy both happen to be here; I made fleishigs today, so I invited them to help themselves to some food.” The atmosphere in the small kitchen was not as cheerful as he’d expected it to be. There was a distinct silence between Miri and Tzippy. He hung his jacket on the hat rack and said, “Good to see you, Tzippy! I don’t think I’ve seen you since your Shabbos sheva brachos. And hello, Miri!” “Okay, here are your containers, Miri, and these are yours, Tzippy. Are you sure you don’t want to eat something now?” Elisheva packed the containers into bags and quickly filled a plate for her oldest son. A triangle of chicken, vegetable letcho and a mound of rice. “What a delicious meal, Mommy! Thanks!” Tzippy looked at her containers. “I’m going to head home now; Peretz will be back from kollel soon.” “Bye, dear!” Their mother walked Tzippy to the door, where her younger siblings were jumping all around her trying to say goodbye. “Have a good lunch, and tell Peretz I said to have a good lunch, too!” little Shloimy yelled. “Tell him I said that also!” Bentzy chimed in. “Because there’s yummy chicken today! You know how long it’s been since Mommy made chicken on a regular Monday? We gotta eat it all up!” Elisheva smiled and waved her daughter off, ignoring Bentzy’s inadvertent barb. It hurt her to hear it. Baruch Hashem, there was always chicken for Shabbos, but in the middle of the week, she usually used ground chicken and prepared patties, or made a big soup from turkey bones. The children rarely enjoyed a delicacy of roast chicken on a regular weekday. It had been Eliyahu’s decision, after he had asked and the rav said that he should certainly take the change from Korman. “It’s not tzedakah; don’t worry,” the rav had said. “And it’s not ribbis either. deal that you made, and you met all of your commitments. This is just part of it.” Elisheva had thought of using the money to cover a tiny drop of their debts that had mounted since Miri’s wedding. She knew how they weighed on Eliyahu’s mind. But he had rejected the idea. “No,” he said. “Just like we’ve managed to make the payments until now, baruch Hashem, we’ll manage going forward. This money should not be going toward debt.” She thought perhaps he wanted to give it to the young couple, as the lawyer had suggested, and she mused aloud that while Tzippy didn’t have a job yet MAKES Adid, DIFFERENCE and Miri it seemed to her that Miri was having a hard time with all of the abundance being poured onto Tzippy lately, and maybe they should give her some of this extra money. p1'Jm N. lJN.l'.l 7'1N. 7:vpwhat DY:llN. 7:V"N. days, this joke rings so true, it’s almost not funny…” Eliyahu had said, but he’d smiled in spite of himself. So Elisheva had ordered two cases of chickens on the previous day, and in the evening she’d gone out and ordered a new washing machine. It wasn’t a very expensive model, but it was supposed to be good — relative, of course, to the quality of today’s appliances. This morning she’d gotten up early and made a delicious lunch. Did it make her a materialistic person if she was overjoyed at the thought of her new washing machine that would arrive later in the week, or by thinking about the delicious food she’d prepared and the big shopping trip waiting for her later today? She convinced herself that it did not. She didn’t need the hot meal or the new clothes for herself; she was simply a good Yiddishe mama who was happy that Hashem had sent her family some reprieve. And taking this reprieve into account, Bentzy’s remark had touched a raw nerve. It was similar to the way she’d felt, again and again, when preparing for the wedding and watching Tzippy’s eyes sparkle. Eventually she’d gotten used to the constant twinge that told her that she wasn’t the one giving to her children; someone else was doing it. The money was not hers. Perhaps it wasn’t tzedakah, but it was from someone else, a stranger. It was all right; perhaps this feeling was here to remind her that nothing that she gave her children was ever really her own. Not the money, not the shopping, not the smile and not the strength. It was all from Hashem, of course. And yet… and yet… it still hurt. To be continued...

Bloomberg Ponders Presidential Run THE PULSE: Former New York City Mayor Mi-

chael Bloomberg is seriously considering entering the crowded Democratic presidential primary race. Bloomberg advisor Howard Wolfson said that Bloomberg is concerned that the current field of Democratic candidates is not well-positioned to defeat President Trump. Bloomberg is the founder of Bloomberg L.P., a financial, software, data and media company headquartered in New York City. He is 77 years old, and his wealth is estimated at $57.1 billion, making him the ninth wealthiest person in the United States. Bloom-

berg served as mayor of New York City from January 2002 through December 2013. He is considered to be a pragmatic centrist on economic issues. Bloomberg successfully turned New York City’s $6 billion deficit into a $3 billion surplus. As mayor, he raised property taxes. However, he later proposed cutting the city’s property and sales tax. Bloomberg favors strict gun control and has taken strong positions on public health, including introducing a citywide ban on trans fats and large sugary drinks. His sugary drink ban was later struck down by the New York State Supreme Court. Many accused Bloomberg of trying to create a nanny state. Bloomberg supports the policing policy of stop and frisk, which is opposed by many minority and progressive groups. He also introduced PlaNYC, which helped cut greenhouse gas emissions in NYC by

as much as 19 percent. Bloomberg ran afoul of many in the frum community when he tried to regulate the practice of metzitzah b’peh by requiring that parents sign a Health Department consent form before performing metzitzah b’peh at the bris of a child.

witnesses from coordinating their testimony. Last week the House committees began publicly releasing transcripts of the interviews. This week the House will start to hold public hearings and will call witnesses to testify regarding Trump’s interactions with Ukraine.

THE IMPACT: Bloomberg’s entry into the race may potentially have a significant impact on the Democratic field. Bloomberg will try to position himself as a centrist alternative to a weakened Joe Biden. Seemingly, he will siphon support from Biden, and this can strengthen progressives like Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders. However, due to his wealth, Bloomberg will have significant resources available at his disposable. He will self-fund his campaign, and much of his messaging will be critical of progressive policies such as Medicare for All and a proposed wealth tax. The increased messaging attacking the positions of Warren and Sanders will likely benefit candidates like Joe Biden and Amy Klobuchar. They also argue that Warren and Sanders are too extreme but lack the funds to hammer home the message to Democratic voters. Bloomberg has his work cut out for him, as he currently polls at low levels of support among Democratic primary voters, though he polls well in headto-head matchups with President Trump. His biggest impact may be the infusion of cash that he brings to more centrist Democratic messaging.

THE IMPACT: This will be the first time that the public will hear from witnesses firsthand. This poses a real challenge for the White House. The transcripts released to date appear to corroborate the version of events that were of concern to the whistleblower. Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman, Ambassador Gordon Sondland, Ambassador Bill Taylor, State Department Official George Kent and National Security Aid Tim Morrison have all essentially confirmed that members of the Trump administration demanded that Ukraine investigate the Bidens and the 2016 election. They also testified that members of the administration used military aid and a potential White House meeting with President Zelensky as leverage to get the Ukrainians to comply with their demands. Republicans have struggled with how to respond. Their response has run the gamut: President Trump and Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) claim that there never was any quid pro quo, and Trump claims that the call with the Ukrainian president was perfect. Senator Mitt Romney (R-UT) said that the president’s actions were wrong, but they do not necessarily warrant impeachment. Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) is on record stating that while a quid pro quo may well have transpired, the president is within his rights to demand a quid pro quo to investigate corruption, and there is therefore nothing wrong with his actions. Congressman Will Hurd (R-TX) said that a president engaging in a quid pro quo is illegal, but it has yet to be established that such pressure was ever applied. Congressman Mark Meadows (R-NC) argued that even if a quid pro quo existed, the records will show that it was not directed or orchestrated by the president. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnel (R-KY) has advised senators to limit their responses on the impeachment matter while the hearings play out in the House. In a sign of concern about the public hearings and the disparate Republican response, the White House has hired former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi and former assistant secretary of the Treasury Department Tom Sayegh to help coordinate the White House response to the impeachment crisis. The public hearings will be pivotal in the court of public opinion and may determine the fate of the impeachment saga.

Impeachment Hearings Go Public THE PULSE: To date, the House of Representatives has held closed-door hearings on the impeachment investigation. The hearings have been conducted by three House committees: Intelligence, Foreign Affairs and Oversight. These committees include Republican members who are free to question witnesses. However, the hearings are closed to other House members and to the general public. Many Republicans have complained about the private nature of the closeddoor hearings. They believe that such hearings do not allow them to defend the president adequately. They feel that the secrecy can be used by the Democrats to manipulate messaging by selectively leaking parts of the testimony to the public. Democrats have countered that private hearings are necessary to prevent

Smoked Beef Fry Stew

108 / THE MONSEY VIEW / November 13, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

LET’S GET THE FACTS STRAIGHT:

Smoked Beef Fry Stew I used boneless flanken, as its more tender than stew meat, yet less pricey than bone-in flanken for a weeknight supper.

Whom? Caused by

A. Those more fortunate than yourself B. Those less fortunate then yourself C. All of the above D. None of the above

INGREDIENTS 8 oz. smoked beef fry

1 lb. mini potatoes

2 lb. boneless flanken, cubed

1 lb. peeled baby carrots

1 onion

2 cups water

3 cloves garlic

1 tsp. salt

2 cups chicken stock

DIRECTIONS 1. In a dry pan with no oil, saute beef fry until crisp on both sides. The beef fry will release its own fat, which will be used to brown the meat and veggies. Set aside. 2. Season flanken with salt and pepper, and saute in the same pan until nicely browned on both sides. 3. Slice onion and add to pan. Saute for five minutes. Add garlic. Stir. Add stock and bring to a simmer. 4. Transfer contents of pot to slow cooker. Wash potatoes well and add to the slow cooker, along with carrots, water and salt. 5. Crumble beef fry into pieces and add most of it to slow cooker, reserving the rest to use as garnish once stew is done. Cook stew on high for four hours or on low for eight.

Have you answered “All of the above”? Correct. Have you answered “None of the above”? Also correct.

Do you find that confusing? An Ayin Horah, by definition, is a buildup of negative energy caused by jealousy or hate which eventually gets released through the eyes. Not necessarily will it be those less fortunate then yourself who will cause it.

Those who most suffer from the middos of kinnah and sinnah, will most likely be the ones to cause an Ayin Horah. When such an individual meets others who he envies, whether it’s for their money, children, or anything else, his eyes will release a negative energy called an Ayin Horah.

Einy Yeshuah is constantly on guard, checking our members for an Ayin Horah regularly.

Shepherd’s Pie

Chicken Stew Healthy and hearty in the best possible way.

A protein, starch and vegetables in one pie dish. It’s a win!

INGREDIENTS

INGREDIENTS 1 lb. chicken cutlets

5 large potatoes

2 T. flour

Salt and pepper, for seasoning

Half stick margarine

2 T. tomato paste

1 onion, cut into rings

2 tsp. salt, divided

2 cups chicken stock

8 oz. sliced mushrooms

Dash of garlic powder

2 T. fish-free Worcestershire sauce

3 cloves garlic, crushed

Dash of white pepper

1 cup frozen peas

1 lb. ground meat

1 bay leaf

1 onion, finely diced

Salt and pepper to taste

4 cloves garlic, minced

2 medium zucchini, cut into chunks 1 green pepper, cut into chunks 2 T. flour 2 cups chicken stock

1 carrot, cut into small cubes

DIRECTIONS

1 tsp. soy sauce 1 tsp. salt

1. Prepare a batch of mashed potatoes: Cube potatoes and place into a pot. Fill pot with water to cover the potatoes plus one inch. Add 1 teaspoon salt and bring to a boil over high heat. Cook until fork-tender. Drain potatoes and return to the pot. Add margarine, 1 teaspoon salt, a dash of garlic powder and a dash of white pepper. Mash until smooth. Set aside until ready to use.

1. Season cutlets with salt and pepper. Saute in a pan over medium-high heat until brown on both sides. Once cooled, cut into bite size pieces. Set aside.

2. To prepare the meat base: In a large pot set over medium-high heat, saute onion and garlic for one minute. Add carrots and saute for three additional minutes. Add the meat and saute until meat is browned, breaking up clumps as it cooks. Add flour and stir to combine. Add tomato paste, chicken stock, Worcestershire sauce, peas, bay leaf and salt and pepper to taste. Bring to a boil and allow to simmer gently for five minutes. Remove bay leaf.

2. Add onion and mushrooms to the same pan and saute until water is absorbed and vegetables start to brown, about 10 to 15 minutes. Add garlic and saute an additional minute. Add zucchini, peppers and flour. Stir. Add stock, soy sauce and salt.

3. Transfer meat to a 10” round pan. Top with prepared mashed potatoes, starting around the edges to create a seal to prevent the mixture from bubbling up. Bake uncovered at 400° for half an hour. Cool 15 minutes before cutting up and serving.

3. Bring mixture to a boil, and then add chicken and lower the heat. Cover and allow to simmer gently for 20 to 30 minutes.

For those of us blessed to never have to worry about where our next meal will come from, the concept of true hunger is quite foreign. Yet, on some level, we can relate to the comfort that food provides. On a sated stomach, our days look brighter, we feel stronger, and most anything seems possible. On Bedford Avenue in South Williamsburg, there is a nondescript little dining hall that provides that comfort and hope to hundreds of visitors a day. Founded on the belief that every Yid is a brother and no one in our family should ever worry about where his next bite will come from, all who walk through these doors are immediately taken in by the warmth — and the endless supply of food. The name of the place says it all, and looking around, one wouldn’t be wrong to insist they feel Reb Shayala’s presence. The term ahavas chinam comes to mind. Here, every Yid is welcome.

BACK HOME One hundred fifty years ago, back when Europe was the cradle of chassidus, there were many rabbinic courts estab-

lished all over Hungary, Poland, Ukraine — all the way into the cold Russian tundra — each with its own approach to serving Hashem. In Bodrogkeresztúr, Hungary, lived a tzaddik whose gadlus in Torah and chassidus was eclipsed only by his love for every Yid he encountered. In Kerestir, the emphasis was on ahavas Yisroel. Reb Shayala Kerestirer, Reb Yeshaya ben Reb Moshe Shteiner (1851–1925), was world-renowned for his kedusha and Torah, but it was his ahavas Yisroel and the yeshuos he invoked that earned him a spot in the hearts of Yidden around the world — and for generations to come. Reb Shayala loved his fellow Yidden, not for what they had accomplished in life, but for their very essence — that of being his brothers, children of Hashem. He also recognized that our souls, as much as our bodies, are nourished by

kind words, the love we experience and the food we eat. It is that message of love that tugged at heartstrings and touches hearts still. The need of the downtrodden to be welcomed, accepted, embraced. And from those capable of it, the desire to emulate the tzaddik in some way — to reach out to and assist our less-privileged brethren.

THE WANDERING JEW Since time immemorial, Yidden have traversed countries, seas and continents in search of economic security. Beyond the attempts at business, there were also meshulachim who would travel to richer communities as representatives of their hometowns. In days gone by, the term “meshulach” carried with it a tremendous level of respect. In 1755, the Chida, Rebbe Chaim Yosef Dovid Azulai, zt”l, was so respected for his tremendous intellect and ehrlichkeit, that he was chosen as meshulach for the land of Eretz Yisroel. At that time, this honor was bestowed upon men who were considered worthy of the title and who garnered respect on the shores where they arrived. Times and landscapes may have changed, and over the past 70 years we have been blessed with much stability on American shores, but ardent poverty still exists in many homes across the world (and right here in our backyards). Beyond individual privation, most yeshivos and organizations are functioning at a financial deficit. And so, the influx of meshulachim is something we are all familiar with. The level of respect they receive, though, has tragically and drastically changed. Nowadays, most meshulachim find themselves on unfamiliar soil, feeling unpopular — and too often, unwelcome. Sadly, they’ve taken to hiding in plain sight. They don’t desire to be noticed beyond the few moments they stretch out their hands. For the rest of the time, they attempt to stay below the radar, hiding in the crowds. But being the rachmanim bnei rachmanim that we are, there were some special souls among us who bothered to take note of a growing need.

A TASTE OF HOME It was over ten years ago that Reb Yankel Silberstein looked around his local shul and realized that the meshulachim began their workday without having eaten a

single morsel of food. At first using his own funds, every morning, he would set up a table with some mezonos and drinks. It quickly evolved to a fuller breakfast, and as word spread, the olam showing up for a morning meal grew. Reb Yankel soon realized two important factors. For one, the crowd had outgrown the minimal space, but even more importantly — people can’t subsist on breakfast alone. The first solution presented itself in the form of an amazing donation by the generous Brach family. The spacious facilities they offered, free of charge, is valued at somewhere in the range of $10K monthly.

The name of the place says it all, and looking around, one wouldn’t be wrong to insist they feel Reb Shayala’s presence. 118 / THE MONSEY VIEW / November 13, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

The second issue required the efforts of many volunteers and sponsors, and it was with much siyata d’Shmaya that in September of 2011, the little kitchen started to serve breakfast, lunch as well as dinner to countless meshulachim, widowers and others who wouldn’t find a warm meal at home. The place might have been founded with the meshulachim in mind, but the true intention was to feed the hungry — whoever they may be.

A PLACE TO CALL HOME Among the diners are many chashuve Yidden. Some come because there sadly isn’t someone at home who can fix a meal; others come to bolster the spirits of those around and infuse the air with a Torah’dig vibe. Then there are guests who may be coming in for company and camaraderie as much as for the nutritious and filling meals. Though it is absolutely true that hunger can be quieted with cheaper fare, the generous founders, chefs and volunteers don’t believe in giving less than they would for their own family. There is an old adage about how “we are what we eat.” And so, to ensure that the food is always healthful and wholesome, every meal includes some protein options, and each dish is cooked with fresh ingredients, without any artificial fillers or preservatives. The kitchen even serves fermented beet juice (borscht) to aid in easy digestion! The kitchen is open seven days a week. On weekdays, the kitchen opens for breakfast at 7 a.m. and doesn’t close until the final diner leaves at 11 p.m. And finally, after working hard all week, Shabbos for the meshulachim is truly a day of rest. In days gone by, they used to need to find a place for their meals, where they often felt put upon to entertain their hosts. Now they get to spend time in the company of their peers, sharing to’amehu, the seudos and melaveh malkah in a comfortable and familiar environment. Best yet, the entire day is their own. They can choose to nap, learn or shmooze — without any external pressures to perform.

THE COMFORTS OF HOME The menu is extensive, and the options are readily displayed — not printed on some laminated sheets. More importantly, there are no prices attached to each dish. If one is so inclined, and many a guest are, they can easily pay whatever amount they desire. Those who can afford to pay do so at the pushka, concealed out of sight. The very knowledge that some pay accords the rest of the diners a sense of respect, because to the onlooker, they, too, might be a paying customer. And because the diners’ comfort is always the priority, the entrance area is not visible from the street, so that passersby can’t look in.

ing his rounds for donations, an avreich made a proposition. That day was the yahrtzeit of the heilige Reb Shayala Kerestirer, he told Reb Silberstein, and if the kitchen would henceforth carry the name of the tzaddik, this yungerman promised substantial annual donations. And thus, a name was born.

“REB SHAYALA’S KITCHEN”

FUNDRAISING As one would expect in a venue of this nature, the majority of “employees” are yungerleit who volunteer their time and energy (and money) for this timeless and precious chesed. Much of the food and supplies, too, come from amazing sponsors, as well as some of our popular supermarkets, wholesalers and bakeries. In our conversation, the volunteers emphasized their appreciation for bakeries and groceries that donated their products that were ap-

The name Reb Shayala immediately brings to mind the kindness and concern he extended to all who came to him for help. The word kitchen evokes an image of home and hearth. To a great degree, the kitchen defines the tzaddik’s essence. Because when it came to his guests, Reb Shayala did more than graciously welcome; his concern for them was legendary, as he personally served and ensured that all were sated. Reb Shayala knew that when one is hungry, it is difficult — nay, impossible — to focus on much else. He believed that the lack of food doesn’t make one less of a person, but it certainly hinders their ability to care adequately about the rest of their responsibilities. It is only when one has eaten that they become the best version of themselves. A person who isn’t thinking about where his next meal will come from can focus on the important things, like Torah, tefillah and growing in Yiddishkeit. He is also a better father, a calmer spouse. Some have related that they’ve taken to calling the kitchen “the shalom bayis stop.” Prior to heading home, many a hungry husband knows to step in and grab a bite. Whether or not there is ready dinner waiting for him at home, he can come home calmly and greet his family in a pleasant manner.

Among the very basics that every human requires, food takes priority. It is, quite literally, our sustenance. proaching their “sell-by” date. If more shops would do that, they pointed out, they would be able to serve the crowds with more much-needed food, while preventing a whole lot of bal tashchis. The cost of serving over a thousand meals a day isn’t easily covered, even with the wonderful shops donating their fare. Besides supplies, there is a full-time chef that spends his entire day in the kitchen, as well as a small cleaning crew. And so, in an act that is truly the beauty of Klal Yisroel coming full circle, the indefatigable Reb Yankel Teitelbaum devotes his time and money to collect for the collectors.

A KITCHEN BY ANY OTHER NAME In one of those moments of obvious siyata d’Shmaya, on 3 Iyar, way back when the kitchen had only recently opened its doors, the little soup kitchen got its name. When the original founder Reb Silberstein was mak-

COMING HOME Though many feel inclined to support this worthwhile cause, the kitchen makes it quite clear that they don’t claim to offer brachos from the tzaddik. Still, the name, Reb Shayala’s Kitchen, resonates with all who hear about it, and the concept hits home. We remember the Rebbe’s love for his fellow Yid, and we recognize the truth in his life’s mission. Among the very basics that every human requires, food takes priority. It is, quite literally, our sustenance. And while it might be true that we all need more than just food to survive, few things restore pride and energy, while providing healing and comfort, the way a hot meal does.

Lawyers, doctors, accountants, businessman, Rebbeim, and Kollel Yungerleit all over the world spend countless hours delving into Gemorah, Rishonim, and Achronim.

handful of men created a new program, one that would quench this great thirst. A program designed for understanding B’Iyun, for chazarah – designed to bring you to the next level! That program is of course, Daf Hashovua.

As the cycle is nearing completion of Seder Moed, the movement has never been stronger. Shuls all across the world have Daf Hashovua chaburos. Change Your pH and Improve Your Teeth and Gums! Did you know that the pH (measure of the acidity or alkalinity of a solution) level in your mouth can affect the health of your teeth and gums? It’s true — a balanced pH protects dental health. The way to control the pH is through the foods we eat. By focusing on the general health benefits of an alkaline diet, we create a ripple effect that improves our dental health. A healthy mouth is a non-acidic, neutral or alkaline mouth, with a pH 7.0 or above. Tooth roots begin to dissolve as this pH gets a tiny bit below neutral (at pH 6.5), and when acidity levels dip to pH 5.5 or lower, teeth will erode, become discolored, and be at risk for cavities. All acidity weakens teeth, but it is the amount of time that acids are in contact with the teeth that determines the severity of the damage. The pH of the mouth can change dramatically with the types of foods we eat. Certain foods, such as sugary beverages (which contain acids plus lots of sugar and/or high-fructose corn syrup), citrus fruits, juices, kombucha, apple cider vinegar, lemon water, sparkling water, wines, snacks and some grains, increase the acidity in the mouth. Foods that are highly acidic, like black coffee, vinegar, wines, cherries, green cabbage, American cheese and lemons, lowers the pH, while foods like melons, chicken soup and salty nuts increases the pH. There are a few foods, however, that alkalize the body yet are acidic in the mouth. One example is lemons — they are one of the best products to alkalize your body, but they have such a low pH in the mouth that drinking lemonade can destroy teeth. Another example is spinach, which is good to alkalize the body, but the oxalic acid in spinach can destroy the healthy pellicle on teeth and make them sensitive. If you eat lemons or spinach, be sure to incorporate them into meals and end the meal with some xylitol gum that will offset the acidity. Fortunately, many alkalizing foods, like cantaloupe, watermelon, asparagus, mushrooms, carrots, mango, apples and garlic, are not damaging to teeth. The rule of thumb is: After dinner, instead of eating a sweet dessert, which will only contribute to the low pH levels in your mouth, follow up dinner with an alkalizing fruit or veggie. People with acidic saliva often experience dental problems because their saliva damages their teeth. These people wonder why they have uncontrollable cavities, broken fillings, gum recession or sensitivity, despite their efforts to brush and floss. The solution is to protect teeth with xylitol and find ways to alkalize the mouth as often as possible. Xylitol mints and

124 / THE MONSEY VIEW / November 13, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

gums are immediate solutions for mouth acidity and quickly regulate the pH in the mouth. Rinsing food away inhibits its fermentation by bacteria, which keeps the plaque “immature.” ”Mature” plaque is full of bacteria and much more toxic to your oral health. After you have a meal or drink, rinse your mouth with water and then proceed with these suggestions: BAKING SODA AND/OR XYLITOL RINSES • Mix ½ teaspoon of baking soda in 4 ounces of water. Stir it with your toothbrush and take a sip, keeping it in your mouth until the salty flavor is gone. Continue taking sips until you are done with the solution. Do not rinse with water afterward. • Mix ½ teaspoon xylitol in 4 ounces of water. Stir it with your toothbrush and take a sip, keeping it in your mouth for 30 seconds and spit it out. Do not rinse with water afterward. Other tips for boosting alkalinity of your mouth and your body is to add veggies to your diet. While some vegetables are acidic, many vegetables are alkaline, so they will help neutralize the pH in the mouth and the body. Experts say the more vibrant the color, the more beneficial the veggie. Good choices include red bell peppers, kale, asparagus, spinach, broccoli and green beans. Bad choices include pickled vegetables, olives, lentils, corn and winter squash. Another tip is to limit the breads and choose healthier options like almond flour breads that are considered slightly alkaline. If a sugary soft drink cannot be avoided, do not sip it over an extended period of time. Rather drink it fast. Follow up with some water to not only wash away the sugar, but to restore pH balance. After a meal or an acidic drink, chew sugarless gum that contains xylitol. The action of chewing gum encourages the mouth to make saliva, which over time will restore pH balance. Xylitol is believed to not only induce saliva production, but also to prevent bacteria from clinging to tooth enamel. Do not brush teeth immediately after drinking a soft drink, wine, cider, beer or fruit juices. Because the enamel is already softened by the acidity, toothbrush bristles will literally brush off enamel, thinning the protective layer surrounding the dentin. Finishing a meal with particular cheeses can also rebalance pH levels. Best suggestion is Camembert. Last but not least, drink lots of water.

New York of the early twentieth century lay at the crossroads of the American dream. Hundreds of Yidden were settling in New York at the time, but the Torah infrastructure of the city had not yet been firmly established. Decisions were to be made and challenges to be met, or failed. One by one, each family confronted the dichotomy — the wealth and opportunity of the goldene medinah, and the sacrifices that a Torah-true life entailed.

N

Blessed with an unusually successful business, the Ehrenthal family was one such example. Determined to keep the flame of Torah alive, Ida and Aaron Ehrenthal worked tirelessly to establish and support yeshivos and institutions throughout the city. Uniquely positioned as members

126 / THE MONSEY VIEW

of the privileged upper class, the Ehrenthals used their wealth to champion Jewish causes with passion and fervor. Whereas other couples of their class engaged in luxury and leisure, the Ehrenthals consistently involved themselves in activities of a higher calling.

AND YET, In the late 1930s, a unique opportunity arose. Rav Elchanan Wasserman, hy”d, arrived in New York on a fundraising mission, and the Ehrenthals were called upon to arrange an elegant charity dinner on his behalf. As per Rav Elchanan’s instruction, the dinner was to be arranged with separate seating for men and women, an unheard-of idea at the time. While others scorned this directive as outdated and outlandish, the Ehrenthals were determined to make it a reality. Placing their faith in Rav Elchanan’s vision, Aaron and Ida recruited donors and attendees, caterers and honorees. At times they were mocked, at times they were respected. Irrespective of the reaction they received, the Ehrenthals forged ahead, realizing that this dinner was more than a fundraiser; it was about standards and beliefs, the ability to remain true to halacha’s ideals despite the changing times. The Ehrenthals served as a bulwark, safeguarding future generations with their stalwart emunas chachamim, and yet, their own family future remained unknown. Blessed with a daughter, the Ehrenthals had been told that she would likely be the only child they would ever have. But despite the doctors’ predictions, Ida refused to part with her dreams. Clinging to an insupressible hope, Ida refused to accept that she would never raise a son. Both Ida and Aaron dreamed of a son to pamper and love, an heir to their business and mission. A doer by nature, and not one to dwell in sadness, Ida immersed herself in the dinner preparations with as much vigor as she could muster. And yet, in the deepest recesses of her mind, a wild idea was slowly taking root. As Ida’s friends shopped and sewed their very best for the upcoming affair, Ida, a woman of high society, made no such arrangements. She had her own secret planned for the big night, a secret that would carry the weight of generations. The night of the event arrived. That blustery winter evening, Ida arrived at the hall wearing an outfit the likes of which she’d never worn before. With a waitress apron tied neatly around a simple dress, Ida stepped into the reception armed with an unshakeable resolve. Quickly, Ida scanned the room until she found whom she was looking for. With remarkable determination, she weaved her way through the tables that dotted the hall — ignoring the shocked stares of those who recognized her bizarre getup — and walked all the way up to the head table, until finally, she made it. Placing a plate before Rav Elchanan, Ida looked down and shared her request: “Would the Rav please bentch me with a son?” What happened next remains unclear. Was Rav Elchanan shocked by her brazenness? Was he impressed with her determination, taken by her demeanor? Did he express gratitude for her giving, or was he chagrined by her daring feat? One thing we know for sure — the bracha came to be. It was a bracha that led to doros, generations of Torah Yidden living lives that would make Ida proud. That night, my dear great-grandmother traded her usual stately appearance for humble kitchen-assistant getup. And as I hold my children close, I know her trade paid off deeply — because my children are the grandchildren of the son she was promised.

IN THE DEEPEST CORNERS OF IDA’S MIND, A WILD IDEA WAS SLOWLY TAKING ROOT.

Millions of homemakers around the globe owe a debt of gratitude to a Chinese-born Canadian engineer — though they likely never heard his name. If necessity is the mother of invention, then perhaps boredom — or, in this case, unemployment — might be its father. When Robert Wang, a telecommunications engineer, found himself without a job, he decided to finally tackle a problem that had been bothering him for some time. As busy parents, Wang and his wife often struggled with the daily responsibility that many homemakers can relate to — that of putting a healthy and filling dinner on their table every night. 132 / THE MONSEY VIEW / November 13, 2019 www.themonseyview.com / 845.600.8484

Preparing a decent meal is often time-consuming and messy. A luxury, many will insist, hectic daily schedules don’t lend themselves to. What’s a harried homemaker to do? Using his advanced engineering skills, Wang decided to tinker with an idea that had been percolating for a while. He was keen on creating an automated cooking machine that would revolutionize kitchens around the world. Amazingly, the brainchild he conceived did just that.

A COOKING REVOLUTION? Given the extent of the Instant Pot’s popularity, it would be safe to wager that even if you don’t own an Instant Pot yourself, you likely know someone who does — and has been raving about how awesome it is. What is so innovative about the Instant Pot that has its users gushing about its benefits? For starters, this 7-in-1 appliance allows for a one-pot deal, without the one-pot taste. You can start by sauteing, and then proceed with fast (or slow) cooking — all in

the same pot. The all-in-one concept, much like the “Jack of all trades,” often falls short in many departments. But when Wang utilized his computer science background, he managed to merge the standard pressure-cooker and slow-cooking concepts with advanced technology that monitored and regulated the cooking process based on weight, pressure and temperature.

This technology ensures that the food will retain its flavor and moisture, and most impressively — will not burn. If the food gets done earlier than serving time, the timed setting will conveniently switch it over to warming mode, keeping the food at ready-to-serve temperature until it’s time for it to be plated. (This setting comes in especially handy for those who have some later shifts at dinner. Your bachurim will appreci-

Incidentally, the Crock-Pot was the brilliant invention of a man who went by Naxon. His real name was Nachumsohn, and as you might have guessed, he was Jewish. He conceived the Crock-Pot for the purpose it still serves in thousands of frum homes today: the Shabbos cholent.

ate that their food was kept moist and warm as it waited for their arrival after a long day of learning.)

EVERYTHING OLD IS NEW AGAIN Believe it or not, the pressurecooking option is hundreds of years old — first invented by French physicist Denis Papin in 1679. The concept may have existed earlier, but the pressure cooker only gained popularity during World War II, when homemakers recognized an additional benefit: Much fuel could be saved with this ingenious cooking method. The pressure-cooking option struck a chord with busy homemakers of later generations, too — from those who walked in late after a full day at work and found themselves

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

8 TIPS YOU MIGHT WANT TO KNOW 1.

When choosing the “saute” option, always keep the lid open, and press the “adjust” button to choose the right setting. The “saute” function is also ideal for heating up the pan fast (I even use it when I want to quickly heat up some tomato sauce for meatballs), but it is especially useful for browning meat or sauteing vegetables prior to cooking.

2.

Don’t use more than one cup of liquid to cook meat, and by that I’m referring to broth, soy sauce, wine, water, etc. The pressure cooker doesn’t need much liquid, and too much will dilute the flavor of the meat. (This rule doesn’t apply if you’re also cooking a starch, like rice, that will need adequate liquid to fluff properly.)

3.

As soon as the temperature exceeds 284° Fahrenheit on the Instant Pot, heating is immediately suspended. This nifty feature, among others, was designed to prevent the food from burning and the pressure cooker from “exploding” (like pressure cookers of yore sometimes did…)

4.

The recipe might tell you that mashed potatoes only needs 12 minutes, but it takes time for the pressure to build once the lid is sealed. Therefore, expect cooking time to take 10 to 15 minutes longer than the time set. And, of course, it will take some time for the pot to release the pressure as well.

5.

Once the dish has finished cooking, the Instant Pot will automatically switch to warming mode, which automatically reduces the pressure in the pot. Quickly releasing pressure will speed up serving time, but is not the ideal solution with most meats. For softest meats and chicken, allow for natural release — which will help the meat retain its juices. (Rice, potatoes, soups, etc. do perfectly fine with the “quick release” option.)

6.

Never, ever force the Instant Pot open. As soon as the pressure has lowered to safe levels, the lid will slide open rather easily.

7.

Here’s something even Instant Pot aficionados likely don’t know: The hot, condensation-laden lid doesn’t need to rest on your counter! Those two small “tabs” on either side of the lid are cleverly designed to fit into the Instant Pot handles, so that it can stand upright on its side! (See image.)

8.

The Instant Pot is rather large and, as some will insist, clumsy. Don’t purchase one if you know you won’t have where to store it, or if the cabinet you’re planning to store it in won’t give you easy access to it. While many adore this product, others caution that the hassle of accessing it and replacing it in its proper space keeps them from using it as frequently as they’d like.

hard-pressed to put dinner on the table in under 30 minutes, to the stay-at-home mothers, who after a hectic day with household chores, glanced at the kitchen clock to discover that her hungry brood was about to come through the front door, and dinner had not even been started! I, too, grew up with many a delicious dinner cooked in the original, hissing, pressure cooker. It was a much utilized tool, but lest one was vigilant, this mode of cooking made one prone to burnt food — and burnt fingers. On the other side of cooking styles were the slow cookers. These had been successfully marketed for busy working women, and though they were relatively popular, they were also notoriously slow and required ample advance planning. Though it hadn’t quite gone the way of the dodo, many harried moms concluded that mornings are too hectic for the dinner planning that slow-cooking requires. With the Instant Pot, Wang sought to combine the benefits of both. The “set it and forget it” option allows the chef to focus on the rest of dinner, and at the same time, the Instant Pot cooks the food very quickly. And besides for the obvious advantage of having the food on the table sooner, the faster

cooking has the food retaining more nutrients and flavor!

WHAT’S COOKING? The Instant Pot’s popularity has inspired thousands (some will insist millions) of recipes from passionate fans who have become enraptured with the product. The enchantment with the product isn’t only due to the ease of cooking an untold variety of soups, stews and a host of side dishes; there’s something even more exciting about the endless options of complete main dishes that can be set up in mere minutes. Some much-loved favorites include meatballs and spaghetti, chicken bottoms and rice, potato beef stew, and the endless variety of Chinese chicken or beef dishes, which have taken to being called “dump dinners,” an unfortunate name choice for a minimal-effort meal that can be tossed together in minutes. It might be worthwhile to note that although the Instant Pot will present you with some of the most tender and moist dishes you’ve ever encountered, you won’t be able to obtain a crispy exterior, or really a crunch of any kind. The pressure-

A POT BY ANY OTHER NAME Some might argue that the Crock-Pot was the Instant Pot of the 1950s. Eager to reclaim their popularity, Crock-Pot has rolled out their own multicooker in their Crock-Pot Express Crock. Tapping into the Instant Pot craze, many other companies have also put forth their own multicookers, some even adding an air fryer or sous vide option (both super popular with health foodies). Some popular alternatives to the Instant Pot brand are Insignia, Gourmia, Cosori, Ninja Foodi, Cuisine 3-in-1 Central, Presto Kitchen Kettle and Walmart’s budget-friendly Farberware Programmable MultiCooker. There are also T-fal’s Programmable Pressure Cooker, KitchenAid’s Stainless Steel MultiCooker, and Magic Chef’s 9-in-1 Multi-Function Pressure Cooker. Considering their competition, these companies might want to work on catchier names!

cooking method has many great benefits, but the sealed, wet environment will always soften the food. A small price to pay, most will insist, as this is also what makes the Instant Pot such an ideal cooking solution for chuck roast, brisket or a complete turkey. Besides the speedy, tasty and juicy results, all that happens without cluttering up the stove or heating up the oven! That’s another benefit of the Instant Pot — the

stovetop stays clean and the kitchen stays cool. The Instant Pot comes with many features that I’ve never tried (yogurt or porridge, anyone?). The slowcooking option, though, is wonderful in that it grants a level of versatility to the busy cook. I like to plan my dinners in advance, and whether I need to step out of the home or am present as dinner simmers, there is something delightful about being able to set the timing and know that the meal will be ready and perfect precisely when I need it. Irrespective of whether you have dinner planned beforehand or find yourself deciding at the last minute on a no-fuss dump dinner, the Instant Pot is a fantastic solution. As one who has been using the Instant Pot frequently, I’ll confess to being mildly infatuated with the product, so much so that I often urge others to try it too. But my obsession is tied into my ardent belief that homemaking should never be a burden — and with the right tools, it can be downright enjoyable!

BEER TURKEY Place 2 lb. turkey (cutlets, steak, goulash — really, any kind) into your Instant Pot. Add 1 T. Dijon mustard, 1 tsp. dried rosemary and 1 bottle of beer. Add salt and pepper to taste. (For a wonderful “dump dinner,” peel and cube 6 large potatoes and add to Instant Pot with an additional ½ cup water.) Set Instant Pot on PRESSURE COOK for 1 hour, and allow for natural pressure release. To serve, mash potatoes and serve with turkey and sauce.

MEATBALLS AND SPAGHETTI Add 2 cans tomato sauce and an equal amount of water to the Instant Pot. Add ¼ cup sugar, 1 tsp. garlic powder, ½ tsp. dried basil leaves, 2 T. vinegar, 3 dashes cayenne pepper, and salt and pepper to taste. Press SAUTE to quickly bring sauce to a boil. For the meatballs, combine 1 lb. ground turkey neck (or ground beef), 1 egg, ¼ cup white rice, 1/3 cup sugar, 1 small ground onion, 1 T. ketchup, salt, pepper and garlic powder to taste. Mix well and refrigerate. Meatball mix can be made the night before cooking so that the mixture is cold enough to be formed into balls. (Balls can be formed and frozen in advance so they can be dropped into the sauce even before it comes to a boil.) Press SLOW COOK, MEDIUM, for 5 hours, or PRESSURE COOK for 1 hour (longer if frozen). Break ½ pack of spaghetti in half (1 lb.) and add to pot. Cook for 15 minutes, stirring to ensure that they are separated. (Best to cook separately in boiling water [drain and add to meatballs], but if careful to separate, it can be cooked in the sauce.)

BOURBON CHICKEN Cut 2 lb. chicken cutlet into small pieces. Heat 3 T. oil in Instant Pot on SAUTE. Add 1 crushed garlic clove, ¼ tsp. ginger, ½ tsp. crushed red pepper flakes, 2 T. ketchup, 1 T. apple cider vinegar, ¼ cup apple juice, 1/3 cup light brown sugar, 1 /3 cup soy sauce and 1/3 cup water and bring to a boil. Add chicken to mixture and stir to coat well. In a cup, combine 2 T. water with 1½ T. cornstarch. Stir to dissolve entirely. Add cornstarch slurry to heated sauce and pressure cook for 10 minutes. Allow for natural pressure release. Serve over hot white rice and garnish with thinly sliced scallions.

GOULASH AND POTATOES Chop 1 large onion. Set Instant Pot on SAUTE, add 2 T. oil, and saute onions for 6 minutes. Meanwhile, rinse and drain 2 lb. beef stew. Add beef to Instant Pot. Stir one minute to brown. Peel and cube 6 large potatoes into bite-sized chunks and add to Instant Pot. Add one cup water, and salt, pepper and paprika to taste. Set PRESSURE COOK for 40 minutes, and allow pressure to release naturally.

KUNG PAO SPAGHETTI CHICKEN Fill a saucepan with water and bring to a boil. Break ½ pack of spaghetti in half (1 lb.) and add to pot. Cook for 15 minutes, and stir well to ensure they are separated. Drain thoroughly. Cube 4 chicken cutlets and season with ¼ tsp. salt and ⅛ tsp. pepper. In an Instant Pot, saute 2 T. oil. Add 4 crushed garlic cloves. Stir until fragrant, add chicken, and sauté for 2 minutes until cutlets lose their pink coloring. Add 1/3 cup soy sauce, ½ cup chicken broth, ¼ cup ketchup, ½ tsp. sriracha and 1½ T. white vinegar to Instant Pot. Mix 2 T. hot water with 2 T. cornstarch, and stir to dissolve entirely. Add to sauce. Add 1 T. peanut butter and whisk it all together until well combined. On SAUTE, cook for an additional 8 minutes. Stir in pasta and thinly sliced scallions (optional). Seal lid and set to WARM for delicious serving temperature at your convenience.

BEEF STEW Chop 1 large onion and 2 parsnips into small pieces, and slice 6 carrots into large small circles. Set Instant Pot on SAUTE, add 2 T. oil and saute veggies for 6 minutes. Meanwhile, rinse and drain 2 lb. beef, place in a medium-sized bowl, and add 2 T. flour. Toss to coat. Add beef to sautéing veggies. Stir one minute to brown. Add 1 cup tomato juice, 1 T. sugar, and salt and pepper to taste. In a cup, create a slurry with 1 T. cornstarch and 2 T. water. Add to mixture. Set PRESSURE COOK for 40 minutes and allow pressure to release naturally. For a delicious aroma in your home, transfer from Instant Pot to an oven-safe pot (uncovered), and bake in an oven preheated at 400° for an additional 10 minutes. It will thicken the gravy and give the meat a delightful texture. (Lower temperature to 200° to keep warm, if you’re serving a later shift.) Serve with warmed baguettes (to dip into the awesome gravy!) for a homey, winter meal.

OVERVIEW Rav Avraham Yeshaya Karelitz, zt”l, better known by the name of his sefarim, Chazon Ish, was born in 1878 in Kossova, Belarus. In 1933, he moved to Eretz Yisroel, where he dedicated the rest of his life to setting the foundations for renewed Torah life in the days when Eretz Yisroel faced difficult spiritual battles. He was niftar on 15 Cheshvan 1953, without leaving behind any children.

Every corner of the Chazon Ish’s tiny home on Ben Pesachya Street shouted simplicity and poverty. Still, it served as a focal attraction in Bnei Brak. Yidden of all types streamed to his address, hoping for an audience with this unofficial, yet universally accepted, gadol hador. Small in stature, and with sharp, penetrating eyes, the Chazon Ish was a legend in his day. He was a gaon and masmid, authoring the sefer Chazon Ish still in his youth. The greatest

and most complicated halachic shailos arrived at his door for conclusive ruling, and he spearheaded the battles of those early years after World War II in Eretz Yisroel. At the same time, his fine middos and trademark small but warm smile embodied his excellence bein adam l’chaveiro. The Chazon Ish shied away from publicity, despite the public’s constant running after him. He refused to take on a position of rabbanus and even declined official titles from Torah institutions that he was involved with. When in Europe, the Chazon Ish lived by the belief that one can accomplish more for the public by advancing his personal learning than by being involved in askanus. Upon moving to Eretz Yisroel, however, the Chazon Ish realized that the needs were different. Post–Churban Europe, he accepted the responsibility to rebuild Torah and Yiddishkeit. Perhaps his primary battle was the campaign for Torah chinuch. At a time when frum institutions were rare and in some places nonexistent, he was constantly promoting the opening of yet another cheder, yeshivah, school, or even another class, so that more Yiddishe children could be granted a pure education. He personally vouched that anyone who helps to this end, enabling as many children as possible to learn, would be rewarded with all the Torah learning that the children accomplished. The Chazon Ish was involved in establishing many yeshivos. He was the first one to advise the Ponevezher Rav, zt”l, to buy the plot upon which Ponevezh Yeshivah was built. He convinced Reb Isaac Sher, zt”l, to open the Slabodka Yeshivah, and also pushed and assisted the Viznitzer Rebbe, Reb Chaim Meir Hager, zy”a, in founding “Shikun Viznitz” in Bnei Brak. Of course, the Kollel Chazon Ish, which carries his name until today, is also attributed to him. When the Satmar Rav, zy”a, visited the Chazon Ish, the two held a lengthy discussion regarding the chal-

The ads were publicized in all local papers in Eretz Yisroel. “The Even Hapinah for the new buildings in the old city of Bnei Brak will take place on 11 Tammuz 5684 (1924), at 3:00 p.m.” Polish olim to Eretz Yisroel, with Reb Yitzchak Gershtenkorn at the helm, were toiling to establish the new settlement of Bnei Brak, on the ruins of old.

lenges of the generation’s children. “The only and best solution is yeshivos, chedarim and Bais Yaakov schools,” the Chazon Ish said repeatedly. He posited that it was important to bring more Yidden close to Torah, so that all of the individual sparks of Torah could join together to form a large flame. And this light would surely push away much darkness. His excitement and delight were visible when he saw that his early dreams of the re-birth of Torah and Yiddishkeit in Eretz Yisroel were being fulfilled. The Chazon Ish was also famous for leading the battle against the draft of girls into the army. He fought until the end, not allowing any compromises to be settled. In this way, he helped preserve the kedushah of Yiddishe homes. After the war, when many Hungarian and Romanian Yidden arrived in Eretz Yisroel, the Chazon Ish commented, “Great kochos of yiras Shamayim arrived to the Land.” His own personal yiras Shamayim was extraordinary. With true holiness and piety, he reached great levels of bitachon. Often, when people would come to discuss personal or public tzaros, he would reply, “Nu, the Eibishter wants us to daven.” The Chazon Ish invested tremendous yegiah in his learning, of-

Early origins of the city are traced back to the days of the Gemara, when Rabbi Akiva taught in his yeshivah there, and to the time of Chizkiyahu Melech Yehudah, as is recorded that Sancheirev of Ashur captured Bnei Brak, among many cities of Yehudah. One of the first efforts of the new pioneers involved splitting the steep mountain that stood at the entrance to Bnei Brak. This allowed them to establish the main road, known today as Rechov Rabbi Akiva. The work was carried out by the first settlers themselves and took more than two years. The first settlers endured much hardship until they saw the city develop. With much effort, they pushed through, overcoming each obstacle one at a time, until finally, they witnessed the transformation of their beautiful new neighborhood. When the Chazon Ish first arrived in Eretz Yisroel, he settled in Tel Aviv. It did not take long before he realized that Bnei Brak was a better choice for him. Soon enough, he moved to Bnei Brak, despite the settlement’s small and delicate state.

ten reviewing the same daf in Gemara for forty days until he felt he had accessed proper clarity! In this way, he toiled until he had command of the entire Torah and was able to rule halacha l’maaseh. The name “Chazon Ish” is spoken with reverence. Rav Avraham Yeshaya Karelitz, zy”a, bequeathed Klal Yisroel with much relevant, current halachic responsa. Perhaps more significant is the groundwork for which he toiled, setting cornerstone after cornerstone and raising the flag of true Torah Yiddishkeit in Eretz Yisroel forever.

1

Want to get the most juice out of your lemon? Microwave it for five seconds, and then roll the lemon back and forth on the counter, applying slight pressure with your hand. Then cut and squeeze!

2

Serving ice water with lemon wedges? Place slices of lemon into a muffin tin, and fill each compartment with water and then freeze. Fancy-shmancy pitcher-ready lemon cubes!

3

Put a damp towel underneath your mixing bowl, and it won’t dance around as you work.

5

Add baking soda or vinegar to the water when boiling eggs. They’ll be much easier to peel!

6 150 / THE MONSEY VIEW

Looking forward to fresh mozzarella on your pizza? Freeze the block of cheese for a half hour for easier shredding.

4

Cherries don’t seem worth the effort? Now they will! Quickly de-pit cherries by placing them, one at a time, on top of a small-necked soda bottle, and use a chopstick or straw to push the pit down into the bottle.

By: Ruchy Reese

7 9

Save time by slicing multiple cherry or grape tomatoes in half at once. Just place the whole batch between two lids, and press down on the top lid with one hand. Use your other hand to slice through them all in one shot.

Ran out of cupcake liners? Cut parchment paper into 5-inch squares and place into muffin tins, folding where needed to create flat walls.

11

8

Spray oil into a measuring cup before using it for sticky substances like honey. The oil prevents the stickiness from… well, sticking.

10

Place a cup of water into the microwave with baked goods to prevent them from drying out while reheating.

Pasta reheated in the microwave is notorious for having both cold and hot spots. To prevent these, arrange pasta on a plate in the shape of a donut before microwaving.

14 13

Doodle your breakfast into being by using a turkey baster to squeeze pancake batter into the pan.

Green bananas and in the mood for a snack? Place an unpeeled banana into the oven for a few minutes at 350° to get it to ripen quickly.

15

Place your bucket of ice cream into a large freezer bag to keep it soft and scoopable.

12

If you’ve been cracking the stem of a banana to peel it all these years, there’s an easier way! Pinch the opposite end and then easily peel it — no tug-of-war involved. (This is how monkeys peel their bananas!)

16 For uber-clear ice cubes, boil the water before freezing.
