A rich history of architecture

Firth Court

Completed in 1905, Firth Court was the first purpose-built university building in Sheffield. Local steelworkers, coalminers and factory workers donated an equivalent of £15million to help found the University of Sheffield. This Edwardian red brick is still in constant use today. Firth Hall is one of the University’s performance spaces, often used for classical concerts and performances by the University orchestra. Beside the Firth building is a neo-gothic style rotunda, opened for William Edgar Allen in 1909 and acted as the first University library. Ivy has now formed an iconic part of the building and it often the background for photos of smiling graduates.

Sheffield Cathedral

Originally a church built in 1200, the building was elevated to cathedral status in 1914. It is currently the oldest building in Sheffield still in use. The cathedral is the site of intrigue and mystery, as 15 bodies, all buried in the Shrewsbury Chapel, were stolen from the crypt in 1809, nearly 200 years after their burials. More recently, in 2020, a fire was believed to be started by an arson attack that destroyed a section of the cathedral that was used by a homeless charity.

Beauchief Abbey

On the outskirts of Sheffield, Beauchief Abbey lies surrounded by ancient woodland. Its history dates back to the Medieval period and it was initially built as a monastery in the 12th century. The building maintains its striking Medieval church tower and two Gothic archways. Henry VIII dissolved Beauchief Abbey in 1537 and the monastic estates were sold to Sir Nicholas Strelley for £223. Subsequently, the refectory was used as a dwelling and the chapter house as a wine cellar and lumber store. It became a family home named, ‘Beauchief Hall’ in 1671 and later returned to a parish church. Today, the modernised building is home to a thriving Church of England congregation.

The Sheffield Botanical GardensPaxton Pavilions

In 1834, a competition was held to find an architect who could design a glasshouse for the Sheffield Botanical Gardens. Runner up Benjamen Broomhead was eventually tasked with the job and awarded £5 for his design entry. His Victorian style building was made up of three pavilions constructed with curvilinear wrought iron and glass domes supported by the fine ashlar columns which formed the outside walls. Little of the original building survives today, yet the overall shape remains true to Broomhead’s design. Today, visitors can enjoy the glasshouse free of charge, which holds many species of cacti, succulents and exoctic trees. Recently, excitement surrounded the Paxton Pavilions as the park closed due to the filming of an upcoming Kate Winslet film.

The Crucible and Lyceum Theatres

Situated side by side in Tudor Square, The Crucible and Lyceum buildings put on world renowned plays and provide rehearsal spaces. With its floor to ceiling windowed rehearsal room, members of the public can peer in to the creative process of the actors. The Crucible has an arena stage, allowing audiences a 360° experience.

The Lyceum Theatre is designed in the Edwardian auditorium style and was granted a grade II listed status in 1972 to save the building from demolition. These buildings bring awardwinning musicals, Shakespeare productions and modern theatrical creations to the people of Sheffield.

Park Hill Estate

Built between 1975 and 1961, Park Hill Estates are a recognisable architectural feature of the Sheffield city skyline. The building is an example of brutalist architecture with its straight lines and concrete facade. Originally intended to be social, affordable housing, the buildings have been updated and architects have tried to brighten up the neutral tones with brightly coloured panels. Sheffield City Council sold the estate to developers Urban Splash for £1 with the hopes of a successful refurbishment. However, they are now creating a private mixed-tenure estate made up of homes for rent, private sale, shared ownership, and student housing, while around a quarter of the units in the development will be social housing. The gentrification of this estate is a polarising venture. Some view the renovations as a practical and beneficial use of an abandoned building complex while to others it represents a failure of the welfare state and social housing.

Cavendish Avenue was built in 1928 and has an attractive front elevation with Tudor-inspired boarding. The current owners have lived in the property for 35 years and have made many changes in that time, adding extensions to include a conservatory and a loft conversion. To the front of the property, there’s a large block paved driveway with a raised stone planter, a mature bay tree, an external power point, exterior lighting and a water tap. The driveway provides parking

for several vehicles and access can be gained to the detached double garage.

Stone steps lead down to a stone flagged path, which wraps around to the left of the property where there is a water tap and access can be gained to the dining kitchen. Beyond the seating terrace there’s a substantial, manicured garden, which is mainly laid to lawn with well-stocked borders, incorporating mature trees and shrubs. A gravelled path leads down the left side of the garden with a mature planted border containing a variety of plants, trees and shrubs. The path continues to the bottom of the garden.

To the bottom of the garden, the gravelled path meanders through different landscaped areas with a range of mature trees, rockery borders, exterior lighting, a lawned area and a central pond. There is a fruit garden, which

The Home Front

GIVING YOUR HOME AND GARDEN A SUMMER MAKEOVER? CHECK OUT THESE LOCAL BUSINESSES FOR INSPIRATION.

Bamfords

The British people have over the last year and a half spent more time in their own homes and surrounding countryside than at any other time in our recent history. What is for many a newly found love of the home and the English landscape has been reflected in the boom in the traditional art market. Bamfords’ last four major sales have each broken records for auction totals and number of lots sold.

Thomas Sidney Cooper, RA (1803-1902) has long been recognised for his depictions of cattle and sheep resting and grazing amongst the meadows of England. A great example of his work dated 1864, previously at the Cavendish Hotel, Baslow, found a new home in the countryside of Oxfordshire. Sidney Cooper’s works often have two, three of four sheep or cows. This massive example left us counting sheep with an incredible 98 resulting in a sale price of £27,000.

The portrait that generated the most interest encouraging bidders from Europe, Asia and the Americas and had been in the family home at Casterne Hall for several generations was in the circle of Francis Hayman and depicted Peg Waffington as the character of Rosalind from ‘As You Like It’. Undoubtedly the Shakespeare association helped it to achieve just over £5,000.

If you would like to contact James Lewis or any of the team at Bamfords for valuation or auction advice do not hesitate to contact us on 01629 730920.

Why are diamonds ‘rare’?

f diamonds are available in every jewellery shop, how can they be rare? We are often asked this question and it is not the most straightforward to answer. In part this is because whether something is rare or not depends on how you define that concept.

There are many gemstones that are far rarer than diamond; an oft-cited example is Tanzanite, regularly marketed as ’1,000 times rarer than diamond’. It is found in only one location on earth whereas diamond is mined in many countries around the world. Diamond is not absolutely rare in the way that Tanzanite is. Its rarity is more complex…

Diamond is formed of carbon, a common element. However, the conditions required for carbon atoms to form as diamond only exist naturally at the incredible pressures and temperatures found deep within the earth’s mantle. At the surface carbon exists as graphite – familiar as the ‘lead’ in pencils.

Research suggests there may be vast quantities of diamond in the mantle and some argue that this makes diamond ‘common’, but I would disagree since these stones aren’t accessible: we can only mine diamonds that have been brought to the earth’s surface by volcanic activity and survived the brutal journey. The areas of the mantle where diamonds are most likely to form are also areas that see little volcanic activity, so many never reach the surface and remain out of reach.

Diamonds are mined are in some of earth’s most challenging terrains, as varied as the perma-frost of northern Canada and the desert beaches of Namibia. Mining in these environments is expensive, requiring intensive investment in infrastructure and equipment. A huge amount of rock must

be excavated, crushed and processed to recover a handful of diamonds.

Around two-thirds of diamonds mined are only of industrial quality, unsuitable for jewellery (diamond has a range of industrial applications due to its extreme hardness). The remainder will still vary greatly in size and quality; large stones with good colour and clarity make up only a tiny fraction. This is where a more nuanced idea of rarity comes in; the balance between small supply and high demand for fine diamonds means that they are rare. Essentially, the larger the stone, the more difficult it becomes to achieve a fine colour and clarity and present a scintillating white sparkle.

For such pure and beautiful diamonds to form, survive the journey from the earth’s mantle, be recovered and fashioned to make it into your piece of jewellery is really one of nature’s most brilliant wonders!

Our showroom is staffed with qualified gemmologists and diamond graders. We are happy to answer any questions you may have about diamonds and talk you through the factors that affect diamond pricing. Just call in to our showroom for a chat.

Talented Sheffield College lecturer wins a catering industry ‘Oscar’

A talented Sheffield College lecturer has won a prestigious national award in the catering and hospitality sector’s equivalent of the Oscars.

The Craft Guild of Chefs Awards celebrate culinary excellence across the UK and beyond and comprise 18 categories. The awards recognise industry talent from apprentice and trainee chefs to seasoned experts established in their careers working in hospitality, pubs and restaurants.

Len Unwin, Curriculum Team Leader, Catering and Hospitality, won the chef lecturer award category.

Len said: “It is an absolute honour to have won this award and given the calibre of the leading lights in the industry who were also recognised in other categories.”

He added: “We are very proud of our links with top employers and being able to involve them in our curriculum and train our students for high level competitions.

“Industry experience is vitally important to equipping the next generation with the skills that catering and hospitality employers need.”

Charity challenge

Rising British motor racing star and Sheffield Children’s Hospital Charity Ambassador, Rowan Campbell-Pilling, has completed a 24-hour fitness challenge, raising crucial awareness for the charity. The event supported by over 200 people and hosted at Firehouse Fitness in Millhouses, Sheffield, ran for 24 hours from 8am Saturday through to 8am Sunday to raise awareness for The Children’s Hospital Charity. Rowan, 16, who is keen to give back and continue his work with the charity, sported his race suit and helmet as he completed high intensity interval training, weight challenges, running and step activities. Bored with your board games?

Weary of guessing whodunnit in Cluedo? Fed up of winning and losing millions in Monopoly? Tired of landing on the cheese in Mousetrap? You need to dust off your unloved board games and head to the Roundabout Game Swap. Held in partnership with The Treehouse Board Game Café and Patriot Games - where the event will be held on Sunday 30 July from 11am to 3pm - The Game Swap is a games-themed bring and buy sale.

The Treehouse is Sheffield’s first board game café, a space for gamers to explore a library of more than 800 board games, with expert staff on hand to make game recommendations and help with the rules.

People who donate games either on the day or in advance get free entry to the swap at tabletop gaming centre Patriot Games 97 Mary Street in Sheffield city centre.

Anybody who hasn’t donated games will be asked to pay an entry fee of £3, which does include re-entry for those who wish to browse more than once.

There are no set prices and people can donate what they want, based on the amount they feel each game is worth.

And all money raised will go to South Yorkshire youth homelessness charity Roundabout. To find out more about the Game Swap, visit roundabouthomeless.org

Get ready for The Peak District Highland Games!

Some of the nation’s strongest men and women are coming to our area this month to battle it out in the bid to become the Peak District Highland Games Champion 2023.

The flagship show takes place at Matlock Farm Park located between Matlock and Chesterfield, on Sunday 27 August. It features athletes participating in six demanding strength events including the Tossing of the Caber, Eight Tonne Tractor Pull and Peak District Dinnie Stone Challenge.

Beginning with a parade of the athletes accompanied by a Scottish Piper Band, the day sees the Manbeast MC provide exciting commentary to enthuse the crowd, with the opportunity for spectators to even take part in a Tug of War.

Lotty Hawkins, communications manager at Matlock Farm Park said: “We’re delighted to have this fantastic event once again. It’s such a favourite for so many people, whatever the age. It’s a real spectacle and with so much else going on in the park, there’s something for everyone”.

The day also features a range of food and craft stalls with a beer tent and gin garden for Summer refreshments, plus all the usual interactive animal and playtime fun of the farm park.

Popular pub gets new defibrillator

Devastated family and friends of a Sheffield man who died unexpectedly have joined forces to raise money to buy a defibrillator to be placed at a popular local pub.

Stefan Elliott died peacefully in his sleep in December and his loved ones, along with The Banner Cross pub on Ecclesall Road where Stefan used to work, immediately sprung into action organising a fundraising drive so his memory would live on.

More than £4,200 was donated and Stefan’s family decided to use the money to fund a new defibrillator which has now been put up outside the pub, alongside a plaque for Stefan, with any money left being donated to local mental health charities.

Stefan, a former pupil of Silverdale School and big Sheffield Wednesday fan, lived on Ecclesall Road and worked at Sheffield City Council before he died.

The Greatest Show on Earth

He was hailed as the world’s greatest showman…and now his show stopping story is coming to Sheffield’s Lyceum Theatre in a glittering new production from STOS Theatre Company.

Broadway and West End classic Barnum is the story of 19th century circus superstar and showbiz pioneer Phineas Taylor Barnum, the man who took the hard sell and turned it into a spectacular display of showmanship that took audiences by storm.

The STOS revival runs at the Lyceum from 14-18 November and will be a starring role for popular South Yorkshire actor and singer Matthew Walker. The production is directed by Jill Beckett, assisted by Mark Harris, with musical direction by Anna Wright and choreography by Claire Harriott.

Jill and Mark have worked together previously on the STOS sell-out production of Christmas family favourite Elf and on last year’s critically acclaimed Sunshine on Leith.

STOS draws on the very best local talent, employs hugely experienced professional creative teams, and invests upwards of £100,000 on each show to ensure the production values are without equal, performing exclusively at the Lyceum.

Barnum is at the Lyceum from 14-18 November. For tickets call 0114 249 6000 or visit sheffieldtheatres.co.uk

Jonny runs like a Wolf

You can go the extra mile… or you can go the extra mile with added mud, water and quite a lot of discomfort!

When Jonny Edwards, the Homeless Prevention Manager with South Yorkshire youth homelessness charity Roundabout, decided to add some fundraising to his usual daily duties, he didn’t do it the easy way.

Instead, he headed for the Stanford Hall estate in Leicestershire and the challenging Wolf Run, a physically demanding obstacle course that combines tough trails, lakes and streams with some imposing man-made structures, culminating in the infamous Mud Sucker, and all designed to push competitors to the limit of physical endurance.

By the time he emerged from the challenge, muddy but unbeaten, he had raised almost £700 for Roundabout - with money still coming in.

“As Roundabout’s Fundraising Manager I’m used to encouraging people to do everything from half marathons to abseils so I think it’s time to lead by example,” Emily said.

“I do hope people will sponsor me to get covered in mud, fall over, run - which has never been something I’m good atand do general silly things that will make me look like a fool!”

There’s still time to support Jonny by visiting justgiving.com/page/jonnyedwardswolfrun?fbclid=IwAR2qsL BQv3zSctOnBh51A19EO0QkbV4_yUWlJZn1IBBpqgSbpfn Q1vih-eE

IS IT TIME FOR A SAVINGS REVIEW?

With the Bank of England raising the bank base rate to 5%, savers are not getting the returns on their money that they should from their bank. Just recently a new client told us they were only getting 0.5% pa on their bank high interest savings account!

With deposit rates of between 5 to 7% pa available, now is a good time to review where your money is held.

Inflation is high and this can be the biggest threat to your wealth over time. We offer a free savings and investment review service to look at how to make your money work harder for you.

The last budget offered pension savers more opportunities to save for their retirement with the annual allowance increasing from £40,000 pa to £60,000. Higher earners and business owners can therefore structure their remuneration to take advantage of these enhanced limits.

As independent financial advisors, we can review the performance of your current holdings and check the charges that are being taken. Many older arrangements charge excessive fees for minimal service. We regularly save approximately 1% pa when clients come to Hamnett Wealth Management. Over the years this can make a massive difference to the pot of money you have available at retirement.

With tax allowances frozen again in the budget, we are seeing more and more clients, having larger and larger inheritance tax liabilities. We specialise in estate planning to ensure that more of our clients money passes down the generations in the most tax efficient way possible.

Dutch Flower Paintings: Exploring Art in Bloom

Until 17 September / Millennium Gallery www.sheffieldmuseums.org.uk

Teeming with beauty, colour and life, Dutch flower painting enraptured an age. These popular studies blossomed throughout the 17th and 18th centuries, combining meticulous technique and rich detail with abundant, often fantastical compositions. This exhibition brings ten of the finest examples of Dutch flower painting from the National Gallery to Sheffield for the first time. Works by Ambrosius Bosschaert the Elder, Rachel Ruysch and Jan van Huysum go on display alongside examples from Sheffield’s own collection. Showcasing the developments in the style, these paintings span flat botanical observations through to dazzling, vibrant compositions.

Peter Kay

As I’m sure any parent will tell you, you can always rely on your children to be disappointed. You try your best to broaden their horizons, take them to places they’ve never been before but can almost always predict that they’ll be underwhelmed by wherever or whatever you’ve taken them to see.

Take our recent maiden trip to Oxford for example. We’d headed down as a family for a couple of days to explore the many colleges and museums, only to find out that my two, aged ten and 12, were more interested in the shops, when we were going for something to eat or whether there was any wifi. Sound familiar?

With over nine million visitors each year, there are plenty of reasons why Oxford is such a popular tourist destination. Principal among these is the university colleges which dominate this

old and most celebrated of cities.

Oxford University is the oldest higher education institution in the Englishspeaking world and to date one of the best and most prestigious in the world. It is made up of 39 independent colleges, the most famous being Christ Church, Trinity and Balliol, which intermingle with shops, museums, restaurants and gardens throughout the centre.

Highlights for tourers include the Radcliffe Camera, an iconic landmark and a working library which is part of the Bodleian complex, and the Hertford Bridge. Often called the Bridge of Sighs, this distinctive skyway nestled amongst Oxford’s quaint honey-coloured streets joins two parts of Hertford College.

It was at this latter attraction that my children showed their true colours.

“Is that it?” they said in harmony.

“I thought it would be bigger.”

“Doesn’t it go over a river?”

Ignoring their negative comments, we joined a throng of tourists and a walking tour posing for pictures and thoroughly enjoyed exploring the many narrow streets and quads. It was anything but underwhelming.

Whilst you’re working your way around the many colleges, don’t forget to stop off at the Ashmolean, the University of Oxford’s museum of art and technology and Britain’s first public museum. This free-to-visit space houses

the world’s greatest collection of Raphael drawings, Egyptian pre-dynastic sculpture and ceramics, the only great Minoan collection in Britain, outstanding Anglo-Saxon treasures, and the foremost collection of modern Chinese paintings.

The History of Science Museum, opposite Trinity College, is also worth a stop-off (entry is free) and is home to an unrivalled collection of scientific inventions, devices, and instruments from different cultures, places, and times in human history.

Cornmarket Street is just a short walk from here and marks the start of Oxford’s main shopping area. Head down and to the left and you’ll find the Covered Market, which dates back to the 18th century and is a hub of independent retailers selling everything from books to clothing.

Head in the opposite direction and you’ll happen upon Westgate, a brand new retail quarter featuring the best of British high street names as well as prestigious global brands. A stunning roof terrace offers panoramic views over the city and is also home to a good number of restaurants as well as a cinema.

If you’re planning more than a day trip to the ‘City of Dreaming Spires’, as we did, the Holiday Inn Oxford offers the perfect base from which to explore the city as well as the surrounding area. Located just off the A34 at the Peartree Roundabout it is sited next to a park and ride which offers easy access to the city – parking is free and a family ticket cost us just £5 return for the ten-minute bus ride into the centre.

The Holiday Inn has just undergone a £1million refurbishment to transform its public spaces and showcase a brand new ‘open lobby’ concept on the ground floor. This has seen the traditionally separate zones of a reception, lobby, bar, lounge, restaurant and business centre merged into one cohesive space where guests can eat, meet, relax and socialise as they choose.

Key features of the open lobby include

free high-speed wifi, a ‘To Go’ café where food and drinks are available around the clock, a versatile dining space with a range of seating from booths to high and low tables, a living room-style media lounge with comfy seating, games, magazines and TV, and an E-bar where guests can plug in with lots of power points, a wireless printer and more.

“There are so many options and areas to plug in or switch off, that our business and travel guests will love what we’ve done,” said general manager Gavin Webster. “Customer satisfaction is a top priority for me and my team and this refurbishment allows us to deliver our best-ever service with no barriers between us and the guests.”

This high-level of customer service was evident throughout our stay at the

hotel; staff were eager to please and engage you in conversation making you feel very welcome. The vibrant décor really added to the ‘open lobby’ concept and created a bright and bubbly atmosphere in areas that can often be soulless. It made for a refreshing change.

The restaurant operates an extensive all-day menu and we tucked into dishes of king prawn skewers (£8.25), sirloin steak (£25.95) and chicken makhana curry (£17.25). Children are well catered for too with a ‘build your own menu’ and eat for free with paying adults.

Breakfast is served buffet style and featured a range of cereals and pastries, fruit and cold cuts as well as your traditional hot favourites, including eggs cooked to order.

The refurbishments at the Holiday Inn Oxford haven’t been limited to the lobby but have been extended to the bedrooms too. Our King Room with pull-out sofa bed was both spacious and comfortable.

The location of the hotel is not just convenient for the centre of Oxford but also offers easy access to the Cotswolds, nearby Blenheim Palace and the Bicester Village designer shopping outlet is just a ten-minute drive away.

Our children (and ourselves) were seriously impressed with the hotel, for once being overwhelmed. We’ll enjoy it while it lasts.

Come together

THE GNOME IS BACK... AND TURNING UP AT A MIDSUMMER’S EVE BALL.

Midsummer’s Eve Ball, held at the DoubleTree by Hilton Sheffield Park, has raised over £41,000 for Sheffield Children’s Hospital.

Organised by Kelsey Barrie, Nicola Fletcher, Rachel Ludlam, Natalie Drury, Helen Wragg, Deborah Newton, Alex Hill and Alex Baldwin, the event was also kindly supported by Joy HerseyTodd of Unique Weddings and Events.

The ball was attended by 250 guests who came together to raise money to support the hospital and thanks to ticket sales, raffles and a grand auction, over

£41,000 was raised in total.

The money raised will go towards specialist support workers for the Emergency Department at Sheffield Children’s Hospital, ensuring every child receives the mental health support they need. These support workers are Charity-funded and aim to bridge the gap so that more children at risk of suicide can be supported to cope with their mental health.

The ball was a success thanks to the generosity of local businesses and friends of the organisers who donated raffle prizes, vouchers and auction prizes.

The group of friends came together in support of Sheffield Children’s Hospital, after signing up to trek to Petra in Jordan this November. The team have all self-funded the trek, meaning every penny raised will support the Charity.

Together, they will trek a total of 77km to the ancient red city of Petra, one of the new Seven Wonders of the World.

Wanted: future stars

alling all head chefs and restaurateurs... do you have a bright spark working in your kitchen who is shaping up to be an outstanding chef of the future? If you do, now’s the time to shout about it, because Westside is staging a fantastic competition to find the Young Chef of the Year 2023.

The competition is open to all restaurants in the Sheffield and North Derbyshire region and all entries must be under the age of 25 on 1 August 2023.

Competitors will be invited to join us for a MasterChef-style cooking competition on Monday 4 September at Sheffield College’s renowned MSK Academy Kitchen. We’ve come up with something a little different this year but you’ll have to wait and see what’s in store. All we’re saying is that all chefs will be encouraged to embrace their creative side.

Last year we were wowed by some first rate, inventive virtuoso cooking. Our winner was Chris Parker from The George, Hathersage… so who’ll be named as our next rising star?

“It was nerve-wracking at first but I was confident I could produce a good dish,” said Chris. “I’m quite surprised to be fair. I thought Reece’s dish was really good and the other two guys were really good too. All the chefs showed great composure, were organised, had good

technical skills and cooked some excellent dishes.”

The Westside Young Chef of the Year competition is a great opportunity to shine a light on the next generation of kitchen superstars. We’re looking forward to seeing what the best young talent out there has to offer, and giving all a boost by placing them in the spotlight.

The results will be announced at the 2023 Westside Restaurant and Bar Awards at The OEC – Owlerton Events & Conferencing – on Monday 30 October.

Rewinding back to last year, over 250 people packed out the Hillsborough venue, which opened in late 2019 and hosts a range of impressive multipurpose suites with catering for up to 500 guests, a perfect setting for weddings, dinners, balls, conferences, live events and more. It was the perfect fit for our event; extremely well organised, the service was faultless throughout the evening ensuring that the awards ran smoothly and without a hitch.

Each of our 18 winners received an engraved plaque, presented on the night by publishing managers Sam Warsop, Mandy Ogle and Sally-Anne Sharp. As well as his winner’s plaque, our young chef, Chri,s was presented with a Kiritsuke knife from the Global Knife range by Ben Grunwerg, managing director of our sponsors I Grunwerg Ltd.

We’ll be contacting restaurants across the region, reminding head chefs and restaurateurs to get involved. But don’t wait to be invited. If you employ a bright young chef with the talent and drive to reach the top, let us know. The closing date for entries is Friday 11 August.

To make sure your establishment is under consideration for the 2023 Westside Restaurant & Bar Awards, contact publishing manager Sam Warsop at sam.warsop@rmcmedia.co.uk

Westside Readers’ Choice Award 2023

You can get involved now by casting your vote for the Westside Readers’ Choice. Whether you select your favourite local café, a much-loved Indian or Italian restaurant or any other type of food venue, all votes are equal. 2022’s winner was The Wortley Arms, a stunning pub and restaurant in the north of Sheffield.

To vote go online to www.rmcmedia/events and let us know where you enjoy eating out most. All entries must include a home address and contact details, only one entry per email address is allowed.

Make new memories

There will be many Westside readers who have fond memories of The Dore Grill and will have been sad to see it close its doors after 36 years. Along with venues like Baldwins Omega and Tuckwoods, it holds a special place in Sheffield restaurant folklore – who can forget the sweet trolley which did the rounds at the end of your meal?

Now it’s down to the new generation to make new memories and the new tenants at 36 Church Lane will be hoping for similar success in the coming years.

The Dore, as it is now called, opened at the end of May and is operated by the same team behind Bank House in Hathersage. A £350,000 refurbishment has seen the venue completely transformed and is now home to a restaurant and bar as well as adjoining coffee shop and bakery, making it an allday venue. Indeed you can drop by for breakfast, lunch and dinner or just a drink if you prefer.

The recent weather has certainly helped The Dore quickly establish itself in the area thanks to a generous outdoor terrace, which was buzzing on the evening of our visit. Inside you’ll find contemporary décor with lots of greens, wood and florals as well as a gorgeous

orangery dominated by an artificial cherry blossom tree. It definitely feels like they’ve brought the outside inside.

Suitably seated we ordered drinks inkeeping with the warm weather – a large glass of Initmista Vinho Branco (£7.50) for me and an Aperol spritz (£9.50) for my wife – before perusing the menu. There’s an Italian/Mediterranean feel to it, with pizza, pasta and grills, and dishes including arancini, bruschetta and Tuscan chicken.

We started with buratta (£7), a soft, milky buffalo mozzarella cheese, which was service with confit heritage tomatoes, balsamic and rocket. If you could put summer on a plate, this wasn’t far off. My wife opted for the shell-on king prawns (£11), which were served with ‘nduja butter and crispy lilliput capers and served atop a slice of toasted Dore Bakery sourdough from next door.

The ‘grills’ section provided inspiration for main course and the porchetta (£19), rolled with garlic, sage and rosemary was well complemented by the truffle and parmesan mash and tenderstem broccoli. It was a hearty dish yet still retained those familiar, fresh summery flavours.

I can only describe my dish as The Dore’s version of ‘surf ‘n’ turf’ – an 8oz fillet steak with garlic king prawns (£39). The Dore use 28-day aged

grass-fed steaks and this was the perfect example, cooked medium-rare as requested and incredibly tender and flavoursome. I have to give special mention to the accompanying Dauphinoise chips too which were just fantastic, perfectly layered and crisp. Roasted vine tomatoes and an onion fritter completed the picture.

Dessert was a stretch too far for me so I settled for a Dark Peak blend coffee (£3.40), locally roasted from Castleton Coffee, whilst my wife indulged with a vanilla crème brûlée (£6) which was paired with a salted caramel ice cream and biscuit crumb.

Everything at The Dore was well cooked and beautifully presented and the staff were never too far away should you need anything. It has big boots to fill but looks already to be a big hit in the area and beyond.

Cult classic

BY LOCALS AND CELEBRITIES ALIKE, PRITHI RAJ HAS DEVELOPED A UNIQUE FOLLOWING, WRITES RICHARD ABBEY.

egular followers of social media will know that Ecclesall Road’s Prithi Raj restaurant has something of a cult following. Led by Sheffield resident and Channel 5 news presenter Dan Walker, it attracts a loyal customer base as well as a smattering of celebrities who flock for their authentic dishes that remain true to the regional dishes of Bangladesh and India.

Recent visitors have included Dan, who also brought his Strictly Come Dancing tour mates, Olympic gold medallist Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill, comedian Jon Richardson and The Chase star Mark Labbett, aka The Beast.

Unfortunately there were no famous faces in attendance on the evening of our visit (just a busy restaurant) but the effect on the restaurant, particularly from the continued support from Dan Walker, is clearly evident. So much so, that he even has a couple of dishes named after him – the Dan Walker Special and the Dan & Nadiya Glitter Balti.

Suitably intrigued, it seemed only fair that I gave one of them a try, but first the obligatory poppadums (£1.40) and pickle tray (£3.50), which always seems the perfect way to start an evening. Prithi Raj have a good selection with onion/

cucumber, mango chutney, lime pickle, mint raita and a tangy Raj red sauce.

We followed this with a Mix Raj Platter (£12.80), which serves two and includes onion bhaji, lamb tikka, chicken tikka and sheekh kebab. It was a fantastic combination of flavours and textures and got us really in the mood for what was to follow.

I plumped for the Dan Walker Special (£15.90) and was greeted with a dish of minced lamb with peppers, onions and tomatoes, which had been cooked in chef Sobuj’s special sauce and topped with a boiled egg and fresh coriander. The dish can is offered with either chicken, lamb or king prawns; I opted for the former which contrasted nicely with the rich, meaty sauce. It was a stand-out dish and worthy of inclusion on the menu.

My wife chose another house speciality, Shashlick Bhuna (£14.50), which consisted of marinated lamb prepared in the clay oven and served in a traditional bhuna sauce with onions, peppers and tomatoes. It had a real depth of flavour, not too spicy, and was gratefully mopped up with pieces of nan (£3.40).

Not quite the curry connoisseurs just

yet, my children shared a chicken korma (£13.50) and cheese nan (£4) as well as some spicy chips (£3). We also shared a pilau rice (£3.90).

Drinks-wise, my wife and I shared a large bottle of Kingfisher beer (£6, 660ml) whilst my children both chose a J20 (£2.80).

The links to well-known local names may grab the headlines but at the heart of Prithi Raj is consistently good customers service and food to match. They’re hugely philanthropic too, raising money for many local charities, including Sheffield’s Children’s Hospital, and have been regular winners at our annual Restaurant of the Year Awards. In fact, they’re our current ‘Best Indian’, an accolade that’s well deserved.

A taste of Italy

ocated on Ecclesall Road, Nonnas sits amongst a plethora of independent stores, bars and restaurants. Opened in 1996, the venue has grown from humble beginnings to a multi-award winning Italian restaurant. We visited mid-week to sample the newly launched menu; a mixture of classic Italian dishes with a subtle twist. Already bustling upon our arrival, owner Maurizio Mori promptly escorted my dining companion and I to our table. With tiled flooring and a lowered ceiling, the venue feels extremely homely and welcoming. The menu includes a variety of nibbles and appetisers, mains and dessert selections. Vegetarian and diners with food allergies are catered for with dishes adapted accordingly. A ‘bambini’ menu is also served for children under 12. Additionally, an expansive inventory of wines, spirits and cocktails can be procured.

Owing to driving duties, I selected a Diet Coke (£2.75) to drink, while my companion opted for a half pint of Italian Moretti beer (£3). My starter dish of Bruschetta Salsiccia (£7.50) was brimming with a generous topping of Italian sausage, egg, parmesan cheese and a pinch of parsley. Each bite was a delightful rich taste with a spicy kick combined with the garlic-infused bread.

My dining companion’s choice of Bresaola & Pecorino Sardo (£9.95) combining delicate pieces of air-dried salt beef, shaved pecorino sardo (hard cheese from sheep’s milk), sundried tomatoes, rocket and drizzled with balsamic syrup creating a tasty entrée.

Having both decided to refrain from pasta dishes (although our fellow diners’ dishes looked particularly tempting), our choice of mains promptly arrived piping hot, direct from the kitchen. My companion’s choice of Merluzzo alla Veneziana (£25) was an ample piece of pan-fried cod fillet, served alongside roasted fennel, spinach, spiced tomato sauce and topped with crispy rocket. The flaky cod broke away easily with each forkful and the accompanying vegetables certainly livened up the taste. My choice of Pollo Arrosto (£22) was a satisfying dish with succulent, moist chicken breast. Paired with sweet potato fondant and wholegrain mustard cream, the flavours were a delightful mix. Even the accompanying tenderstem broccoli had been blanched just right.

With both mains devoured, our taste adventure continued with dessert. As recommended by our server, I opted for Mousse al Choccolato (£8.50); generous servings of dark chocolate mousse on a bed of chocolate crumb, alongside fresh

raspberries and sprinkled with hazelnut praline pieces. My companion chose Semifreddo (£8.50), a delicious passion fruit parfait with coconut ice-cream served with a zesty mango and lime compote and crunchy, toasted coconut pieces. To finish, we both elected for hot beverages; an Americano (£3.20) and Cappuccino (£3.40) which nicely rounded off our meal.

Maurizio and his team certainly provide an exceptional service, reflected by the numerous local and national awards amassed over the years. With innovative menu options and live events, Nonnas certainly is a destination to visit and experience Italian hospitality. No wonder Hollywood actor Sylvester Stallone once dropped by!

Cars for living

A highly connected and innovative SUV for the modern, electrified world, the allnew Renault Austral E-Tech full hybrid forms part of the company’s ‘cars for living’ trajectory, enhancing its already strong focus on electrified cars.

The car features the latest, more powerful, and more efficient version of the E-Tech full hybrid powertrain. It marries its new, efficient drivetrain with an innovative, user-focused cockpit and a range of advanced technologies – from cutting-edge Google connectivity to an array of driver, safety and parking systems as standard – all packaged in a new, sporty SUV design that follows Gilles Vidal’s (Renault Director of Design) new vision.

All models are powered by a new 200hp petrol hybrid powertrain with a 400V 1.7kWh lithium-ion battery.

THE LATEST ADDITION FROM RENAULT IS HIGHLY CONNECTED, WRITES RICHARD ABBEY.

New look and added technology

The Audi A6 and Audi A7 model lines have been brought into the updated Audi UK portfolio for the 2024 model year. In addition to newly designed trim lines with new-look front and rear designs, the luxury-class models now feature bold interior and exterior colours, new wheel designs, and upgraded standard equipment.

The A6 and A7 model lines now comprise three trim levels - Sport, S line, and Black Edition – and improved standard specification. Matrix LED headlights with dynamic front and rear indicators, electric seats with memory driver function, Audi phone box light, Audi App store and camera-based traffic sign recognition is now standard across every model.

The updated Audi A6 models are available to order now, starting at £43,965 for the Saloon and £46,115 for the Avant. The Audi A7 starts at £56,385 (OTR).

The SUV that shines

Volkswagen is upgrading the third generation of the Touareg with extensive improvements: the suspension as well as the display and operating concept of the full-size SUV have been revised, and the front and rear design have been sharpened.

Particularly striking features are the newly developed HD LED matrix headlights at the front and the LED taillights, which are realised as a light strip.

The new Touareg will be launched in five powertrain versions. In addition to a turbocharged petrol engine4, there is a choice of two turbodiesel engines and two plug-in hybrids. All highly efficient engines are paired as standard with an eight-speed automatic gearbox and the 4MOTION permanent all-wheel drive.

The Touareg R eHybrid is the top-of-the-range model of the product line with the most powerful drive system: a V6 petrol engine plus electric motor with a system output of 340 kW (462 PS).
