Junius Paul - Ism

September 25th 2020 is the retail street date for three brand new releases – Carlos Nino & Miguel Atwood-Ferguson’s Chicago Waves, Anteloper’s Tour Beats Vol. 1, and Makaya McCraven’s Universal Beings E&F Sides. You can find info sheets on all three of those releases elsewhere in this book. But more pertinent to this page is: as a celebration of our first triple album release date (aka the MONDO STREET DATE), we are setting some of our earlier titles on sale, temporarily, for a very nice price, to make maximum International Anthem catalog click bait for your pre-autumnal ordering sprees. From NOW until the MONDO STREET DATE on September 25th, the LPs listed below are 10% off, and the CDs listed below are 15% off. Please enjoy, and accept our THANKS – as always – for helping us MAKE THINGS TIGHT FOREVER.

SING YOUR DREAMS “Pioneering all-female rock band Ace of Cups is finally having its moment.” —Los Angeles Times “Just by existing, the Ace of Cups are moving things forward for gender and age equality—a nice signal to the world that there’s no age limit on following your dreams.” —Billboard “Ace of Cups is course-correcting rock history.” —The Guardian Sing Your Dreams is the new album from the Ace of Cups, the pioneering all-female rock group from the 1960s San Francisco psychedelic scene. The album features collaborations with Jackson Browne, Sheila E and the Escovedo Family, Bakithi Kumalo (whose iconic bass-playing was integral to Paul Simon’s Graceland), counter cultural icon Wavy Gravy, Jack Casady (Jefferson Airplane, Hot Tuna), Bob Weir (Grateful Dead), jam-band luminary Steve Kimock (Zero,The Dead), and David Freiberg (Quicksilver Messenger Service, Jefferson Starship). The record’s 12 tracks showcase an evolution in songwriting and an eclectic command of styles – all rooted in their unique blend of American roots, savvy pop sensibilities, and a fierce garage band rush imbued with an intoxicating psychedelic sheen. The band reaches back to its Haight-Ashbury heyday for the psych-tinged ‘Gemini’ and a deliciously sarcastic ‘Waller Street Blues.’ There’s a Randy Newman vibe in the soft-shoe shuffle of ‘I’m On Your Side,’ and a tender plea for human goodness in ‘Sister Ruth.’ Their punchy take on Keb Mo’s ‘Put A Woman In Charge’ reflects the Ace of Cups’ long-standing and unapologetic commitment to gender equity, and the maxim of love and togetherness that is core to the band remains equally strong on this new record, with powerful statements like ‘Basic Human Needs’ and ‘Slowest River / Made for Love’. Originating from within the psychedelic milieu of 60s San Francisco, the original Ace of Cups quintet was a beloved fixture of the scene, delivering memorable performances, sterling songcraft, and a reputation for enchanting harmonies. Their warmly-received eponymous debut Ace Of Cups was released in 2018.

GLOBAL COMMUNICATION Transmissions

Global Communication are the legendary duo of Tom Middelton and Mark Pritchard. They began recording in 1991 and in a short space of time released a huge amount of music collectively and individually, in a broad range of styles, including records under names such as Link, E621, Reload, The Chameleon and Jedi Knights. It’s the work they made together as Global Communication however that has proved to be the most enduring. This is in no small part down to the formidable reputation of their sole studio album, 76:14, widely considered to be an ambient techno classic, hailed by The Guardian as "an unfathomably beautiful out-of-time masterpiece" and no.11 in Mixmag’s best dance albums of all time.

[REMASTERED EDITION] “An ambient masterpiece” - FACT Magazine Reissue of a widely acknowledged classic of electronic music, originally released in 1994 and now available on the group’s own Evolution label, fully remastered from the original DAT tapes, with care taken to retain the full dynamics of the original recordings. Accompanied by in-depth sleevenotes by Ben Cardew and a beautifully updated gatefold sleeve design by Mark Gowing. This is the definitive edition of one of the best records released in the entire decade. Hailed by The Guardian as "an unfathomably beautiful out-of-time masterpiece" and no.11 in Mixmag’s best dance albums of all time. Whilst the faintly recognisable DNA of Detroit techno is apparent in the music, it also exists comfortably alongside the finest film soundtrack work of Vangelis and Tangerine Dream, the groundbreaking run of late-70s instrumental albums of Brian Eno, contemporary albums such as Aphex Twin’s Selected Ambient Works series and The KLF’s Chill Out, and in the use of texture and harmony to convey incredibly moving abstract soundscapes, there’s also a connection to the exploratory guitar music of My Bloody Valentine or the groups defined as post-rock. Global Communication are the legendary duo of Tom Middelton and Mark Pritchard. They began recording in 1991 and in a short space of time released a huge amount of music collectively and individually, in a broad range of styles, including records under names such as Link, E621, Reload, The Chameleon and Jedi Knights, but it’s the work they made together as Global Communication that has proved to be the most enduring.

GLOBAL COMMUNICATION Chapterhouse Retranslated by Global Communication Blood Music: Pentamerous Metamorphosis [REMASTERED EDITION]

Reissue of the revolutionary 1993 full album overhaul of the Blood Music album by labelmates Chapterhouse. Whilst retaining some elements of the shoegaze guitar music of the original recording to use as building blocks, Global Communication essentially crafted their own album out of the results, and the result is a lesser known but equally fine-crafted companion to much-loved ambient techno classic 76:14. It’s also worth bearing in mind that outside of dub reggae, it was pretty much unheard of for an entire album to be remixed. Issued on the group’s own Evolution label and available for the first time in 22 years, it’s been fully remastered from the original DAT tapes, with great care taken to retain the full dynamics of the original recordings. It is also accompanied by in-depth sleevenotes by Ben Cardew and a beautifully updated gatefold sleeve design by Mark Gowing. DESCRIPTION A first-generation Mexican-American based in Oxnard, CA (home also to Stones Throw affiliates Madlib and Anderson .Paak), Los Retros, AKA Mauri Tapia, began playing music as a child, borrowing his older brother's guitar when he was just eight years old. When he was around 16, he started putting tracks online that he'd recorded with an old second-hand mixer, on which he played all the instruments himself. Thanks purely to word of mouth, he built a loyal fan base online, racking up hundreds of thousands of streams, and began performing to sold-out audiences of young people who related to his heartfelt songs. Everlasting is a vulnerable, yet stylistically-rich collection of songs built around his impeccable curatorial ear and a natural instinct for updating vintage hooks and song structures. Across the EP, he reflects on a newfound sense of spirituality, love and positivity through five intimate, nostalgia- inducing songs that channel a variety of influences from soul and funk, to psychedelic rock.

"Really great always, he makes brilliant music and that new track 'With You' is really strong." – GILLES PETERSON “Great one” – LEFTO “Sometimes when I am pottering about in the kitchen something will take my ear [on BBC 6Music] and I’ll go “ooh that’s nice”, and I will go out and buy it, and that’s exactly what I did with this.” – MARTIN FREEMAN “Sly always comes correct with his own take on covers but also pushed new boundaries on his original work. Don’t sleep on Sly!” – ANTHONY VALADEZ (KCRW) Out 18th September, ‘What It Is’ is the second LP from Brooklyn-based multi-instrumentalist, composer, arranger and producer Sly5thAve; his first new music since the critically acclaimed project ‘The Invisible Man: An Orchestral Tribute to Dr. Dre’. The recording had been first devised as a benefit concert in LA which was attended by Dr. Dre who took to the stage to express thanks for Sly5thAve’s arrangements. Having spent the past three years performing the project with orchestras around the world, ‘What It Is’ sees Sly5thAve retain the high-quality that fans and critics alike have come to expect from him while stepping out with something considerably different, delving deeper into the worlds of hip hop, jazz and soul. Celebrating not only his own versatile musicianship but that of his collaborators and friends, ‘What It Is’ is a collection of tracks showcasing the best of the multi-faceted musician. A sought-after collaborator himself, Sly5thAve has attained much respect from his work with a host of highly fêted musicians including; Prince (as a member of the New Power Generation Band), Stevie Wonder, Gladys Knight, The Dave Brubeck Quartet, Taylor Swift, Janelle Monáe, Freddie Gibbs and Quantic. “It’s a little jazzy. There is some hip hop in there. A little bit of orchestral chamber vibes… It’s It me”, Sly5thAve admits. From the NYC-Texas inspired sounds of “More Or Less” featuring prolific New York rapper Marlon Craft to the politically charged Brazilian-Portuguese “Expatria” recorded with Grammy-nominated Thalma de Freitas, the album spans a myriad of genres and offerings from fellow talented musicians.

TRACKLISTING Wrath & Apathy Ghosts & Stone Green & Blue Fight & Flight

The lead-off and title track of Brock Van Wey's 38th bvdub album Wrath and Apathy establishes itself with a noir hued Rhodes piano and idly lurching beats that provide an intoxicating beginning, which is, fittingly obstructed by a resonant synth-line that paces the song to new heights. Van Wey's fans have come to covet the ebb and flow between such sprawlingly emotive passages, and Wrath and Apathy has these in mass. It takes its time, like most of Van Wey's works, to get where it's going, and his musical style to the already initiated is that of intently watching the ocean waves, with each wave bringing its own unique shape, texture, and in this case, aural reward. Wrath and Apathy is loosely based on the events of Haruki Murakami's novel Kafka on the Shore. Like most of Van Wey's recent n5MD works, comes in the form of four spaciously captivating and deeply immersive long-form journeys.

Sarah Davachi Cantus, Descant

CAT NO: LMILPX (Clear Vinyl) LMILP (Black Vinyl) LMICD (CD) UPC: 5060384619187 (Ltd. Clear Vinyl) 5060384619088 (Black Vinyl) 5060384619095 (CD) RELEASE DATE: 18th September 2020 OVERVIEW: The new Sarah Davachi record is an 80 minute, 17 track double album meditation on impermanence and endings, framed by minimalistic organ études and careful harmonic layering. On two tracks the artist’s own vocals are also heard for the first time. This is the first release on the artist’s own label, Late Music. The title of the record – Cantus, Descant – has both literal and metaphorical meaning and is something of a concept album that addresses the relationship between the two. In medieval music, the Latin ‘cantus’ was used as a general term for unadorned singing or chant and by the end of the Middle Ages it came to represent the highest voice of a polyphonic choral texture, often improvised. ‘Descant’, at that time, was used in part to denote the structures of polyphony and counterpoint, the harmonious play of two or more voices against one another. The instrumentation is predominantly organ-based, a combination of electric organ, reed organ and a pipe organ based on a 15th-century design. These arrangements are embellished with tape-based technologies like the Mellotron and echo devices. Davachi comments: “The pervading affect on the album is one that gives reverence to the suspension, the epoché, a space where we welcome and attempt to reconcile impermanence. It is an opportunity to go inside – oneself, one’s sound – in order to simultaneously commune with our comforts and that which we mourn, perhaps not unlike the function of a hymn.” Sarah is based in Los Angeles and has previously released records with Superior Viaduct, Ba Da Bing!, Recital and Boomkat Editions. 2LP Description: Black or Ltd Clear Redeye / US indie exclusive double vinyl housed in a gatefold sleeve w/ download card A2 album narrative poster will be matched with orders of clear vinyl whilst stocks last Boxlot: 15 Ⓟ & © 2020 Late Music

DANIEL ROMANO “HOW ILL THY WORLD IS ORDERED” LABEL: YOU’VE CHANGED RECORDS CATALOG: YC-045 FORMAT: LP/CD/Digital RELEASE DATE: September 18, 2020

Let’s list the facts and see which ones hold: How Ill Thy World Is Ordered is the 9th full-length Daniel Romano album to be released in 2020, but the first to manifest in the physical mediums (LP/CD) since the career spanning, era-defining live album "Okay Wow" was released way back on March 27 . This one too, features the mighty skills of The Outfit, the tightest of tight-knit rock and roll bands: Julianna Riolino (vocals), David Nardi (guitar, vocals), Roddy Rossetti (bass), Ian Romano (drums), supplemented here by Mark Lalama (organ, piano), Briana Salmena (vocals), Victor Belcastro (sax) and Aaron Hutchinson (trumpet). The band assembled in studio in a perfectly tuned geometry to record these new songs following simple guidelines and simple rules: play the whole thing, in sequence, 3 takes or bust, with no overdubs; play “the sound of the feel of a snake bite”; play “a heist on horseback for fool’s gold”. th

Tracklist, all formats: A Rat Without A Tale (4:42) How Ill Thy World Is Ordered (4:45) Green Eye-Shade (2:18) First Yoke (4:21) Joys Too Often Hollowed (3:39) Joys Too Often Hollowed Pt 2 (1:23) Drugged Vinegar (3:50) Never Yet In Love (4:01) A Secret Still To Be Betrayed (4:24) No More Disheartened By The Dawn (5:30) Amaretto And Coke (6:50)

What unexpected anthems emerge! ‘A Rat Without A Tale’, ‘Green Eye-Shade’, ‘First Yoke’, ‘A Secret Still To Be Betrayed’, ‘No More Disheartened By The Dawn’ shock with the full impact of their melodies, the harmonious combination of distinct human voices, the chromed accents of a perfectly arranged horn section, and more guitar playing, real, honest-to-the-core lead guitar playing than Daniel has previously committed to tape. The two-part ‘Joys Too Often Hollow’ and the beautiful closer ‘Amaretto and Coke’ show the band as adept at the swing and sway of softer sentiments, and as quickly tender as brave.

Invitation * Yesterday's Ormatone * Ooze * Forbidden Warning * Headweight * Odyx * Coma Throb * Yomus The experimental brainchild of self-taught composer/drummer/guitarist Ben Coniguliaro, Wyxz is a project that plays demanding, through-composed math rock combined with avant-garde progressive rock, sound collage, and free improvisation. A resident of upstate New York, Ben is still relatively unknown to most of the outside world and is already responsible for several cutting edge underground bands at the ripe age of twenty. Featuring his brother Quinn and the virtuosic guitarist Matt Hollenberg (Cleric, Simulacrum, Shardik), Wyxz is a bizzare microprog assault of powerfully complex music that will leave your head spinning!

Once again a ground breaking album, this first Afro Peruvian music heard outside of Brazil and the album that introduced Susana Baca to the world. This is secret music—a collection of beautiful songs and infectious grooves that’s been hidden for years in the coastal towns and barrios of Peru. It’s not the guys with flutes and drums in wooly hats—it’s music of the black Peruvian communities. Black Peruvians? Yes, Peru was involved in the slave trade too—and this wonderful, funky music is part of that legacy.

Crake are an alt-folk four piece from the city of Leeds in northern England who write melodic and (sometimes) hopeful songs about flora, fauna, anxiety and the tough stuff. Formed on the cusp of 2016/17 after a New Year’s Eve pact, Crake spent their first couple of years playing locally with loose-line-up changes, self-releasing two EPs - 2017’s By the Slimemould and 2018’s The Politics of Lonely. Led by singer/guitarist Rowan Sandle, Crake blend shimmering alt-folk and indie-rock, featuring an increasing density of guitars, tape-loops and synth blankets. Their songs provide a more sonically reassuring but equally intimate bed for Sandle’s poetic lyrics. In late 2018 the band supported Big Thief ’s Buck Meek on the Leeds date of his solo tour, impressing the guitarist so much that he invited them along for Big Thief ’s forthcoming tour across the UK and Europe. Those three weeks spent travelling and playing with their musical heroes saw Crake go from a small, beloved act who’d barely left their hometown, to finding themselves with a legitimate fanbase of their own. Their third 3-track EP Dear Natalie was subsequently released in 2019, also marked by the addition of lead guitarist Russell Searle, joining Rob Slater on drums and Sarah Statham on bass. The EP was the sound of Crake finding their feet on a larger stage, both literally and figuratively, with opening track ‘Glycerin’ shining a spotlight on Sandle’s ever-confessional words.

Since the Big Thief tour and the Dear Natalie EP the band have focused solely on writing and demoing new music, assembling in garages, practice rooms and the beloved Greenmount Studios in Leeds (The Cribs, Pulled Apart By Horses) where drummer Rob Slater works. The first results of this focused time away can be heard on Enough Salt (For All Dogs) b/w Gef, a brand new, two-track single which will be released on 7” vinyl via Saddle Creek’s ongoing Document Series.* Their first self-produced effort, the new single is Crake at their most confident. Exploring the depths of their sound while staying rooted in Rowan Sandle’s brilliant songwriting and captivating lyrics. * Taking inspiration from the original concept behind the founding of Saddle Creek, as an attempt to highlight our home city through music and art, we began the Document Series in 2017. CAT NO: FADELP005 (Vinyl) UPC: 5060384618661 (Vinyl) September2020 2020 RELEASE DATE: 418th th September OVERVIEW: Los Angeles based artist and producer Kingdom presents his second studio album NEUROFIRE, an electrifying follow-up to his breakthrough debut album Tears in the Club and a musical genesis that elevates the mood of pervasive anxiety into a moment of transformation, redemption and ultimately, freedom. NEUROFIRE represents a new chapter for Kingdom. While the music still finds the production prodigy incorporating contorted rhythmic structures under irresistible emotional vocals and synth stabs, the influences and intentions have changed. Refocusing his energy to use his unique point of view to continue to move with an avant-garde sense of expression all while making faster, more turbulent and experimental club and pop music "The album fuses deep and aggressive club bass with syncopated sci-fi Pop/R&B of Timbaland and DanjaHandz while still showcasing the emotional synths and vocals that resonate with me”, says Kingdom. "I dove headfirst into making faster, more turbulent and experimental club and pop music than I had ever made before.” A taste of which Kingdom gave us in EXTERRA Vol 1, a six-track EP, he released last year. NEUROFIRE features guest vocals from GHOST, Kayla Blackmon, Tiara Thomas, Pheona, UNIQU3, Semma, LUVK and Tre Oh Fie- a notable list of new voices from the producer known for making career-defining music with some of today's most respected voices. The new album is the second studio length release following Kingdom’s debut album Tears in the Club, which extracted personal experiences from within the club as a physical and emotional space and featured vocals from R&B heavy hitters SZA and Syd. TITC received recognition from The New York Times, NPR, Billboard, The Fader, Spin, Pitchfork and more as one of the most exhilarating releases of 2017. Kingdom, born Ezra Rubin, got his start in New York City through a series of mixtapes and club nights. After doing runway mixes for cult fashion distributor Hood by Air, Rubin moved to Los Angeles and co-founded the record label Fade To Mind. The label and creative collective created a platform to combine deconstructed underground club music with diverse soundscapes and genres, operating today as one of the most seminal and influential indie labels in music. CLINIC

WHEELTAPPERS AND SHUNTERS OVERVIEW

Hear ye, hear ye! Roll up, roll up! Welcome to Wheeltappers and Shunters! After an unprecedented seven year break, Clinic, Liverpool’s cherished post-punk pop experimentalists return with album number eight. The unusual name is taken from the long-forgotten 1970s ITV variety show The Wheeltappers and Shunters Social Club, compered by Bernard Manning, which recreated the smoky, boozy atmosphere of Northern working men's clubs for a sofa-bound audience. This album is neither a celebration nor a denigration of the culture of the era in which Blackburn and his collaborator-in-chief, Hartley, grew up. “It’s a satirical take on British culture - high and low,” explains Blackburn. “It fascinates me that people look back on the 1970s as the glory days. It’s emerged that there was a darker, more perverse side to that time. When you look back on it now it was quite clearly there in mainstream culture.” The album was recorded last year in founding band member Hartley's Liverpool studio, before they brought in Dilip Harris (King Krule, Sons Of Kemet, Mount Kimbie) to mix it. “We thought it felt right to make a fun, dancefloor album in these dark and conservative times,” Blackburn continues. Fun, sure, but this is Clinic – their brand of fun oozes with menace.

The Great Britain that Clinic are evoking is not that ancient, bucolic past of village green cricket, half a mild and hanky-waving Morris Dancers that many seem so determined that the country should return to, but a rather more sleazy past. Clinic’s reverie is for a time when Blackpool was the pleasure capital of the kingdom and the public was kept entertained by travelling circuses and the dirty glamour of the funfair; tacky end of the pier merriment and enforced fun at Butlins; when bell-ringing town criers bellowed their nonsensical broadsides into the ether. For most bands about to enter their third decade as an entity the well would be running dry, but eight albums in and Clinic still retain the ability to surprise. Clocking in at just over 28 minutes, Wheeltappers and Shunters is an absolute blast, rich in detail and sonic intrigue, those precious minutes stuffed with ideas.

Punk Slime Recordings are proud to present the debut album from Stockholm quartet Initiates. Initiates is the new project from Swedish post-punk act Holograms’ Andreas Lagerström, taking inspiration from shoegaze and ‘90s alternative rock with loud distorted guitar textures and dreamy melodies. Joining Lagerström is Oliver Brink on guitars, Joakim Andersson on bass and Adam Hansson on drums, with Lagerström handling vocals and guitars. For their debut LP the band teamed up with producer Martin “Konie” Ehrencrona (ex Viagra Boys, ex Les Big Byrd) for a 26 minute long collection of nineties infused alt-rock, complete with Lagerström’s signature vocals. After seven years and three records with Holograms - the first two of them released on Brooklyn’s Captured Tracks - Lagerström was ready to try something new. He already had the kernels of new song ideas percolating, although they would never have fit within the punk confines of Holograms - instead, they harked back to shoegaze and nineties alternative. “My biggest influence has always been Swirlies,” he says, referring to the cult Boston indie rockers. “I wanted to something that was outside of the Holograms box, that would be a little bit more laid-back, and that didn’t feel quite so serious.” What began as Lagerström’s own vision has evolved into something else entirely, with all four members bringing their own skillsets to the table; Andersson’s an ex-member of the death metal outfits Maim and Morbus Chron, while Brink’s interests lie chiefly with post-punk outfits like The Sound. Hansson, meanwhile, has already served apprenticeships in underground outfits Kerosene Kream and Caligulas Mamma, and the resulting amalgam on Esoteric Pop is a raw, 26-minute maelstrom of distorted guitar, woozy sonic textures, and reverb-drenched melodies.

MARK EITZEL / The Ugly American

Tongue Master 180g LP

TMASTLP002

5055143211122

Very limited 180g LP pressing of 500. On vinyl for the first time, mastered for vinyl at Abbey Road. A lull after the electronically ambient album ‘The Invisible Man ‘ (2001) Eitzel’s recording output was followed by two releases: a covers album ‘Music For Courage And Confidence’ (2002) and an album of solo and AMC song re-interpretations ‘The Ugly American’ (2003) performed by a band with traditional Greek musicians. ‘The Ugly American ‘ was recorded and released in 2003 on CD only. Seventeen years later, with rejigged artwork, it is unveiled for the first time on vinyl. All songs were recorded with the addition of traditional Greek instruments (bouzouki, tzouras, Cretan lyra & zournas) under the guidance of Manolis Famellos and his band. Re-interpretations of AMC songs ‘Western Sky’, ‘Last Harbour’ and ‘Jenny’ were treated with effervescence and stunning new arrangements. ‘Anything‘ (originally on ‘The Invisible Man‘) as a stark and bleak electronica track, is now heightened to a majestic instrumentation opus. The album retains the heartfelt tales of sadness that you would expect from self-deprecating Eitzel in a folk and pastoral context. Today this beautiful recording is revered for its haunting arrangements and Eitzel’s deep warm and rich vocal delivery. “…grace and beauty that few can match” HOT PRESS "This is not the most obvious coupling…but it’s a beautiful affair nonetheless" TIME OUT (Side 1) Western Sky | Here They Roll Down | Jenny | Nightwatchman | Take Courage (Side 2) Anything | What Good Is Love | Will You Find Me | Last Harbor | Love's Humming

Highlights: "... his cosmos is located somewhere between Bohren & der Club of Gore and Sunn O))), ambient is as familiar to him as brachial sounds, and he is as much acquainted with guitars as with synths and modern technology" (GROOVE) "... sounds like a requiem for this broken world." (SPEX) "... Like Ben Frost, (Prairie) exudes a certain harshness while tempering his work with moments of sublime beauty. This isn’t club material; it’s music for the hammer in one’s hand, the confrontation of the demon, the soul-shattering revelation." (A Closer Listen) Prairie is the project of multi-instrumentalist Marc Jacobs, hailing from Brussels with roots in The Netherlands. “And the Bird Said: Cut Me Open and Sing Me” is the second full length album on Denovali Records. By using various recording techniques, analog gear, guitar pedals, synths, amps and human voices, the album creates a fountain of sound layers which coalesce to synthetic and noise infused manipulations, dramatic crescendos and subtle field recordings. Jacobs focuses on melodies, sometimes hidden melodies, or straight out melodies that took him back to various musical influences, current ones but also from his past, lurking into pop and loving imperfection. The lyrics are the spine of the record, the scenario where various species of birds lead the way, and where each track is a short chapter of the flight.

Steven Adams And The French Drops Keep It Light Fika Recordings LP FIKA082LP 5057805565932 CD FIKA082CD 5057805565949

“Making this record was a joy,” says Steven Adams of his latest album with his band the French Drops. “This time I kept saying to myself ‘keep it light’ whenever I was making decisions.” The buoyant and relaxed mood can be heard across the album in its gloriously skipping tones, as it traverses across indie, pop, alt-rock and more tender acoustic and folk-leaning moments. It’s a craft that Adams has been honing for years as the lead figure in outfits such as The Broken Family Band and Singing Adams. The feelings of serenity and solace he experienced whilst writing the songs themselves carried over into the final product. “I wanted to make a super personal, light-hearted and upbeat record,” he says. “I wanted to do the whole write about what you know thing and keep it as light as possible.” The lightness of the album was a guiding principle but it wasn’t a rule set in stone, as Adams soon found out the deeper he plunged into himself. “We had a running joke about how we were making an album called Keep it Light that is full of songs about racists and panic attacks and existential angst,” he says. “But it does you good to get that stuff out. Writing songs and making records keeps me sane.” “I’m usually sick of a record by the time it’s mixed and I don’t get much of a kick out of hearing my own stuff, but this one’s different,” he says. “I know I sound like a wanker saying this but this is the best record I’ve ever made.” A1) Soft Landings A2) Bring on the Naps A3) Canary A4) Gracechurch St A5) Oh Dear B1) Going to Everglades B2) Note to Self B3) My Brother, The Racist B4) Jonny B5) Mr Sunshine

Lucy and the Rats - Got Lucky Dirty Water Records CD

DWC1122CD 5056321619501

RIYL - Blondie, Nikki and the Corvettes, The Ronettes, The Go Go's, Suzi Quatro. Lucy And The Rats return with their second album and produce another fine record of summer-infused power-pop garage full of hooks and harmonies. Power pop foursome Lucy and the Rats formed after Lucy Ellis moved to London from Melbourne, Australia (where she was part of the Spazzys, a pop-punk three-piece that actually saw their first three singles hit the ARIA Single Chart and their debut album enter the AIR independent chart at No. 1). After several singles and their 2018 debut album, which received lots of praise around the world, Lucy and the Rats are back with their sophomore album- the band are back with their signature, pure, pop sound and a dozen bittersweet, melodic gems. You’ll hear how Lucy has refined her song writing talents as she’s grown into a true master of the pop craft. This album contains her finest work to date including heartfelt, and absolutely beautiful, pop songs that would have been all over the radio in the early ’80s. This is an album that keeps on giving, and you’d have to have a heart of stone to not be moved by the sounds and words coming out of Lucy’s mouth. And then, of course, there’s the punk Rat’s brilliant support: Joe the Dog (Los Perros, Johnny Throttle, and every good band), Manu (Thee Tumbitas, Johnny Throttle, Raw Fun, Michael Jackson), and Liam (The Gaggers, Johnny Throttle, Scraps). That’s the brilliance of Lucy and the Rats: Lucy’s beautiful voice and pop sensibility supported by a barely-tamed bunch of punks. A Frankenstein’s monster of sounds we all know and love fused together to make something special and unique. With these punk rock rodents, once you’re hooked, there’s no turning back. 1 September 2 Real Thing 3 Not One Tear 4 Time To Time 5 On Fire 6 Pinch Myself 7 Dark Clouds 8 Lucky 9 Sorry 10 Get Down 11 TV 12 Jelly Baby Baby

Jeremy Tuplin ~ Violet Waves

Trapped Animal LP

TAR025V

5055869547246

Jeremy Tuplin's TV-inspired third album comes with stunning 60's themed photography and typography with lyrics have been included on the record insert. Previous record ‘The Pink Mirror’, a satirical look at our failure to remove the rose-tinted spectacles when observing the world around us, might have been an entirely solo affair, yet ‘Violet Waves’ finds Tuplin entwining his band, the Ultimate Power Assembly, in his cosmic spiral. Exclusively recorded with the band who joined Tuplin on sojourns through Germany, Italy and two UK headline tours last year, their unfailing presence results in a more brash, bombastic output, espousing the electrifying drama of Scott Walker. Tuplin has always existed within touching distance of a wink of the eye, a tongue in the cheek, and even with the cataclysmic nature of the subjects on display here, Tuplin still manages to not take life too seriously. ‘Killer Killer’ is a feel-good depiction of a love story featuring a porcupine and a chinchilla, the porcupine being the femme fatale and the chinchilla, the ladykiller. Whilst, ‘The Idiot’ finds Tuplin remarking, “The rebels have continued to try to make sense of it / A treason denounced as some kind of astro-physics bullshit” in a nonchalant tone perfectly suited to those who choose to eschew science when contemplating the planet’s future. Fittingly, Tuplin closes with a death wish. “I’ve been thinking and when I die, I would like my heart cut out and projected into outer space / And maybe it’ll catch on and others will do the same / The entirety of the human race / With their hearts cut out and floating in outer space”. Jeremy, we have lift off. Back From The Dead, Break Your Heart Again, Space Magic, Killer Killer, The Inuit, Swimming, Cool Design, The Idiot, Sally’s In A Coma, She Speaks To Me, Violets Are Blue, When I Die etc.

ABOUT RICHARD “I sincerely hope you enjoy this, my record. I made this in my basement bicycle shop during lockdown. It’s a very special record for me. The songs all felt right as they were written and recorded. There’s a vibe and a sound. If you’ve ever recorded songs you’ll know achieving those two things is rarely easy or successful. Anyway, I loved making this record. I hope you like it.”  Joe Pernice, July 2020

IDLES ULTRA MONO “

OVERVIEW

If ‘Joy As An Act of Resistance.’ was meant to detail the band’s manifesto, then their highly anticipated third album ‘Ultra Mono’ - is the sound of IDLES heading into battle, battering ram in hand, for those tenets. Sonically constructed to capture the feeling of a hip-hop record (Kenny Beats even helped with programming on several tracks), the songs double down on the vitriolic sneer and blunt social commentary of their past work. Not far beneath the surface of their self-admitted sloganeering lies a deeply complex and brutally relevant album that chews up cliches and spits them out as high art for the masses. Active presence and self-acceptance also stand at the core of ‘Ultra Mono,’ with much of the songwriting done on-the-spot in the recording booth, and the phrase ‘I am I’ serving as a lyrical and spiritual mantra throughout. Ultimately ‘Ultra Mono’ is a celebration of community.

MARIE DAVIDSON RENEGADE BREAKDOWN Release Date: October 2, 2020 MARIE DAVIDSON & L’OEIL NU ANNOUNCE RENEGADE BREAKDOWN, SHOWCASING A BOLD NEW SOUND, TO BE RELEASED 2ND OCTOBER ON NINJA TUNE. AVAILABLE ON 2LP + CD. Marie Davidson is back with a new album, a new band, and a bold new sound. Arriving under the banner of Marie Davidson & L’Oeil nu, a trio formed of three old-time friends and long-term collaborators with shared roots in Montreal’s DIY scene: Marie, Pierre Guerineau and Asaël R. Robitaille (the former two are also husband and wife, and partners in the group Essaie pas). Renegade Breakdown is a reaction to years in which she spent most of her life on the road, navigating the club and festival lifestyle -- while also a forward-facing, innovative pop record that builds on the classic tenets of Marie’s music to create something that strikes out towards a broader audience. With dark humour and interpolated musical influences—from Fleetwood Mac to Kraftwerk, and jazz classics such as Billie Holiday and Chet Baker—they spin each of its entries in wildly imaginative directions. It follows her breakout 2018 album Working Class Woman, which was lauded by Pitchfork, The Guardian, The New York Times, Resident Advisor, as well as being ranked highly in end-of-year (and decade) lists by Mixmag, The Quietus, Bandcamp and many more. Meanwhile, the track ‘Work It’ garnered worldwide dance-floor anthem status, helped by a Soulwax remix, the iconic duo’s re-work garnering a GRAMMY nomination.

“A synth-pop earworm for your isolated summer...this one’s a glittery affair, with a retro-pop feel that compliments her velvety vocals.” - Rolling Stone “With the album inspired by everything from ’80s pop to PC Music-style shattered electronics, “Ghost (Of A Good Time)” seems like an apt introduction to Haunted Painting. It’s bright, a bit corroded, chirpy, but a little eerie.” - Stereogum “The first taste sounds like a fizzy indie-pop gem upon initial listen; dig in deeper, however, and revel in the whirring production tidbits that coalesce around the maximalist hook.” - Billboard

OVERVIEW For nearly a decade, Sadie Dupuis has been celebrated for her literary lyrics, accomplished guitar playing, and embodied ethos of empowerment, whether with rock band Speedy Ortiz or the pop-oriented solo project Sad13, which debuted in 2016 with Lizzo co-feature “Basement Queens.” It was followed by the self-produced Slugger, featuring “Get a Yes,” a glitter-bomb of an ode to consent, and other bedroom Top 40 tributes centering feminism and inclusivity. But in the ensuing years, reconciling with a delayed processing of grief, Dupuis felt unable to create new music. At the Frye Gallery in Seattle, a ghost spoke to her—or an approximation of one. It was an early 20th century painting of the dancer Saharet by German expressionist Franz von Stuck, one of many haunted-seeming gold-framed oil paintings in the gallery: washed-out faces, under-eye circles, expressions that told stories. Looking at these portraits, she related. And she started to write. Haunted Painting, Sad13’s second album & first for Dupuis’ label Wax Nine (Melkbelly, Johanna Warren), marks her return to artmaking. “Some of these songs feel like emotions that came from a cloud, and I was trying to translate them,” she says.

Recorded but a few months after the shows that formed Live Dead, and featuring a spellbinding version of the “Dark Star”/”St. Stephen”/”The Eleven” medley that was that album’s centerpiece, this Dick’s Picks stands as a worthy counterpoint to what is one of the greatest live albums in rock ‘n’ roll history. Add in the fact it also captures the band working on material for the forthcoming album Aoxomoxoa— including an incredible version of Mountains of the Moon—and serves up a real live Dead rarity with Pigpen’s rendition of Jimmy Reed’s “I Know It’s a Sin,” and it’s little wonder that this volume is almost universally regarded as a prime Pick. Disc one presents excerpts from the Chicago show, leading off with four straight songs from Aoxomoxoa before diving deep into an epic “Cryptical Envelopment”/”The Other One” and concluding with the first three songs from the Minneapolis show, which appears here in its entirety. Disc two features the aforementioned “Dark Star”/”St. Stephen”/”The Eleven” medley and winds up with the always stirring “Morning Dew.”

DICK’S PICKS VOL. 26—4/26/69 ELECTRIC THEATER, CHICAGO, IL 4/27/69 LABOR TEMPLE MINNEAPOLIS, MN (Limited & Hand-Numbered 4-LP 180-Gram Vinyl Edition) STREET DATE: SEPTEMBER 25, 2020 Having surveyed the ‘Seventies with our first two vinyl ventures (Dick’s Picks Vols. 24 & 34) into the Grateful Dead catalog, we really wanted to travel back to the band’s ‘Sixties beginnings for our next multi-LP magnum opus…and boy, did we “pick” the right shows! Recorded but a few months after the shows that formed Live Dead, and featuring a spellbinding version of the “Dark Star”/”St. Stephen”/”The Eleven” medley that was that album’s centerpiece, Dick’s Picks Vol. 26 stands as a worthy counterpoint to what is one of the greatest “official” live albums in rock ‘n’ roll history. Add in the fact it also captures the band working on material for the forthcoming album Aoxomoxoa—including an incredible version of “Mountains of the Moon”—and serves up a real live Dead rarity with a rendition of Jimmy Reed’s “I Know It’s a Sin,” and this is a Pick that’s clearly worthy, one, of coming out on vinyl, and, two, of some special treatment when it does! Which is a challenge we at Real Gone Music relished; so, in addition to re-printing Bear’s notes from the original CD release on the LP insert, we enlisted Bear’s son Starfinder Stanley to provide some added context on behalf of the Owsley Stanley Foundation, from whence the tapes for these shows come. And speaking of those tapes, this 4-LP set is mastered for vinyl by Jeffrey Norman at Mockingbird Mastering, with lacquers cut by Jeff Powell, who got his start at Memphis’ legendary Ardent Studios and has worked with everybody from Bob Dylan to Gregg Allman to Irma Thomas. Pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Furnace Record Pressing, the whisper-quiet test pressings were approved by engineer Jeffrey Norman, Dead archivist David Lemieux, and Real Gone’s own Gordon Anderson, so the audio experience that awaits is truly a cut above. As for the packaging, each of the four LPs is housed inside a polyvinyl sleeve carefully nestled (with extra padding!) inside a two-piece hardshell box with insert. We are only pressing 1500 handnumbered copies of Dick’s Picks Vol. 26; if prior experience is any guide, they will not last long!

In the late ‘60s and early ‘70s, the art form we call jazz exploded into endless permutations, including free jazz, spiritual jazz, soul jazz, fusion, and funk. At that time, a number of black-run collectives organically sprang up across America. In Chicago, there was the AACM (Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians), which spawned among many other artists the Art Ensemble of Chicago. In Watts, Horace Tapscott founded UGMAA (Union of God’s Musicians and Artists Ascension). In Brooklyn, the CBA (Collective Black Artists) included Reggie Workman, Donald Byrd, and Stanley Cowell (co-founder of the Strata East Record label) among its members. In Detroit, Wendell Harrison, Phil Ranelin, and others formed a collective called The Tribe. And from Oakland came Black Jazz Records, founded by pianist Gene Russell and percussionist Dick Schory. Reputed to be the first jazz record label started by an African-American since 1921, its mission statement was “to promote the talents of young African American jazz musicians and singers.” Under Russell’s artistic direction, the label only put out about 20 albums during its short, 4-year (19711975) tenure; and then, due to ownership issues and general neglect, the label went underground. Way underground, in fact…but not so far down that a new generation of crate diggers and DJ’s weren’t able to discover the label’s incredible array of modal, soul, funk, and free jazz, much of it imbued with the political and spiritual concerns of the day (and selling for a pretty penny online). Finally, in the ‘90s and early ‘oughts, the Black Jazz catalog emerged on CD in Japan; but for the most part, the entire label’s output was never reissued on vinyl anywhere. We at Real Gone Music first began tracking down the rights to the Black Jazz label back in 2017. Finally, after a couple of leads went cold, we were able to connect with the rights-holders in early 2020… right before quarantine and the subsequent events that triggered worldwide protests for racial equality. Obviously, the release of this politically aware material, originally recorded in an era of similar social and cultural ferment, couldn’t be more timely. But this music succeeds on a deeper level than just a reminder that the struggle against prejudice continues unabated 50 years later. It offers manifold moments of beauty that remind all of us of our common humanity and the love that, if we let it, binds us all. Produced by Real Gone Music’s own Gordon Anderson and decorated jazz archivist Zev Feldman. With each Black Jazz album release, Real Gone Music will donate $500 to the Equal Justice Initiative.

KELLEE PATTERSON: Maiden Voyage (Remastered CD & Vinyl Edition)

STREET DATE: SEPTEMBER 25, 2020 As purportedly the first Black-owned jazz imprint since the ‘20s, the Black Jazz label had its roots in the Black Power movement of the late ‘60s and early ‘70s. But not every album on the label had a social message. Kellee Patterson’s Maiden Voyage was simply an extremely tasteful, mellow jazz vocal album, recorded with the top-notch sidemen that characterized Black Jazz sessions. Patterson first gained fame as the first Black woman (entered under her real name Pat Patterson) to win the Miss Indiana contest, culminating in a performance of “My Funny Valentine” at the Miss America pageant. Her success led to some acting gigs (the TV shows The Streets of San Francisco and The Dukes of Hazzard, and the movie Demolition Man), a brief brush with Hollywood fame (she was briefly linked romantically to talk show host Johnny Carson), and her signing with Gene Russell for her recording debut on Black Jazz (Russell went on to produce subsequent LPs for Patterson on the Shadybrook label). 1973’s Maiden Voyage is highlighted by a beautiful vocal performance by Patterson of Herbie Hancock’s title tune, backed with such premium players as long-time George Duke sideman John Heard on acoustic bass and Ray Charles touring band member George Harper on flute. Our Real Gone reissue is remastered for CD and vinyl by Mike Milchner at Sonic Vision, with LP lacquer cutting by Clint Holley and Dave Polster at Well Made Music, and features new liner notes by Pat Thomas, author of Listen, Whitey! The Sights and Sounds of Black Power 1965-1975. An essential, though uncharacteristic, entry in the Black Jazz catalog!

HEMI DEMI SEMI QUAVER—BURIED TREASURES OF THE RAYMOND SCOTT BIG BAND STREET DATE: SEPTEMBER 25, 2020 Raymond Scott is best known as the composer of famous tunes that pop up throughout Warner Bros cartoons. In the late ‘Thirties, his celebrated Raymond Scott Quintette was a huge commercial success, a singular ensemble playing a unique and unmistakable style of jazz, full of whimsy and bravura. By the late ‘Forties, he had become an electronic music pioneer, both as an instrument inventor and composer. His music is everywhere these days, not just cartoons. For example, Lizzo’s recent hit “Tempo” samples (sips from?) his “Nescafe,” and he is heard in the recent Netflix hit show Hollywood. The lost chapter between the Quintette and his electronic music was every bit as compelling, starting with the first multiracial radio big band—whose ranks included legends Ben Webster, Cozy Cole, and Charlie Shavers. Not only did this unit swing hard, they could also execute the intricate passages for which he was so famous. Hemidemisemiquaver: Buried Treasures of the Raymond Scott Big Band collects 26 exciting cuts, mostly unreleased radio broadcasts recorded by Scott himself and restored by Gavin Ross at Steady Studio in Burbank, CA. The package features photos from the Scott family archive and extensive liner notes penned by Scott scholar Skip Heller, who co-produced this volume with Scott’s son, Stan Warnow. Indispensable for Raymond Scott fans or any big band fan for that matter!

ALICE BABS & DUKE ELLINGTON: SERENADE TO SWEDEN STREET DATE: SEPTEMBER 25, 2020 Real Gone Music is proud to present what is probably the rarest album in the voluminous Duke Ellington discography, his 1963 date with Swedish singer Alice Babs, Serenade to Sweden. That year, Ellington was hired by the Reprise label as an A&R man, free to sign any artist he wanted and to record them. His first choice was Babs, who, in Ellington’s words, was “the most unique artist I know…She sings opera, she sings lieder, she sings what we call jazz and blues, she sings like an instrument, she even yodels, and she can read any and all of it!” For her part, Babs (born Hildur Alice Nilson) had a hit in Sweden when was only 15 (“Swing It Teacher”), and was an iconic figure in her homeland, appearing in 14 Swedish films from 1938 to 1959. The result of this meeting of legendary musical minds was a sublime cool jazz masterpiece that, sadly, never received a proper release in the U.S. and appears to be the last Ellington album to be reissued on CD. Needless to say, original copies go for big Swedish krona online, and not just because it’s rare; Babs’ wordless vocals and scat singing on “The Boy in My Dreams,” “Strange Visitor,” and “Babsie” are positively Ella-worthy, and Ellington’s masterful arrangements—at times filigreed with a French horn section—provide the perfect accompaniment. We’ve added liner notes by Scott Yanow, while the album boasts remastering by Aaron Kannowski. Fascinating for any jazz fan—essential for Ellington enthusiasts!

DUSTY DUSTY SPRINGFIELD: SPRINGFIELD: The Complete Philadelphia Sessions – A A Brand Brand New Me Me New (Expanded Edition) We have made chronicling the hallowed early ‘70s period of Dusty Springfield’s career something of a mission here at Real Gone Music. This collection brings together, for the first time ever, all of the historic recordings made by Dusty at Sigma Sound Studios in Philadelphia with Gamble-Huff Productions for Atlantic Records. The 17 selections cover the ten 1969 recordings issued on Springfield’s 1970 album A Brand New Me— including the hit title song—plus 7 additional tracks from 1970 including the single “I Wanna Be a Free Girl,” outtakes not issued until the 1990s on various compilations, and a track previously unreleased prior to this release, “Sweet Charlie.” Additionally, because former iterations of this material have not been sonically quite up to snuff, each track is newly-remixed from the original multi-track masters by noted Sigma Sound veteran Tom Moulton under the supervision of legendary Gamble-Huff producer-writer Thom Bell, who worked on the original Brand New Me album and follow-up sessions with Dusty! Liner notes by Joe Marchese and rare images from Dusty’s own collection complete this invaluable look at the seductive Ms. Springfield’s foray into the Philly Soul sound. Put this together with our other Real Gone Dusty retrospectives and you have the full picture of Dusty’s recordings from 1969-1971 that immediately followed her Dusty In Memphis pinnacle!

DUSTY SPRINGFIELD: Come for a Dream—The U.K. Sessions 1970-1971 During her 1968-1971 period with Atlantic Records in the United States, Dusty Springfield also continued to record material in England, where her Atlantic repertoire was released on Philips Records. In turn, Atlantic received rights to issue Dusty’s British recordings from the era, but chose to focus entirely on American sessions. In fact, it wasn’t until the ‘90s that these masters (many of which originally came out on the See All Her Faces album that came out only in the U.K.) were available Stateside, but they were scattered across several compilations and were never comprehensively assembled. Now, with the release of Come for a Dream—The U.K. Sessions 1970-1971, all of Dusty’s “orphaned” British recordings from her 1970-1971 Atlantic period have been gathered together for the first time. These 16 sides document what was intended to be a complete album plus some extra single sides, and represent a major addition and clarification to the legendary singer’s discography. Notes by Joe Marchese shed further light on this tumultuous period in Dusty Springfield’s career, with rare photos to boot. A perfect companion piece to Real Gone Music’s other Dusty Springfield Atlantic-period retrospectives!

BARBARA LYNN SELLING POINTS

THE COMPLETE ATLANTIC RECORDINGS

• Barbara Lynn Is One of the Greatest “Southern Soul” Singer-Songwriters of All Time

STREET DATE: SEPTEMBER 25, 2020

• Also a Mean Left-Handed Guitar Player

Texas-born Barbara Lynn has long been considered one of the finest performers of the style known as “Southern Soul.’” Her career began in her late teens, when Barbara turned a poem she’d written in school into #1 R&B hit, “You’ll Lose A Good Thing,” in the Summer of 1962, launching a career that has now spanned over five decades. Produced by Huey P. Meaux, the now-classic recording was cut for Philadelphia-based Jamie Records, for whom Barbara (a left-handed guitarist and writer of much of her own material) went on to record two albums and a number of singles, including 1964’s “Oh! Baby (We Got A Good Thing Goin’),” recorded by The Rolling Stones a year later. After a brief spell with producer Meaux’s Tribe label, Barbara was signed to Atlantic Records in 1967, recording an entire album, Here Is Barbara Lynn, which yielded the Top 40 R&B and Top 100 pop charted single, “This Is The Thanks I Get.” A popular touring artist, Barbara continued recording for the label, scoring her last Top 40 R&B hit in 1971 with “(Until Then) I’ll Suffer,” from her original 1967 Atlantic sessions. A one-off session with producer/songwriter and keyboardist Spooner Oldham in 1968 spawned six tracks, including an upbeat version of the 1967 Box Tops’ hit “Soul Deep” that finally makes its appearance here as part of The Complete Atlantic Recordings, reissued by Real Gone Music in association with SoulMusic Records. Barbara returned to working with Huey Meaux for her final Atlantic sessions in 1972, which resulted in two singles before the then-mother of three began a hiatus from recording and performing that ended with a 1984 Japanese tour. The Complete Atlantic Recordings features all 25 tracks Barbara Lynn cut for the label between 1967-72. Notes by SoulMusic.com founder David Nathan include quotes from Barbara, who remains an active live performer. Remastered by Mike Milchner at SonicVision… essential Southern soul!

RITUALS OF MINE HYPE NOSTALGIA

CARPARK RECORDS www.carparkrecords.com If you could recreate a time before you experienced the most extreme grief of your life, would you do it? For Rituals of Mine’s Terra Lopez, she did just that. With her latest album HYPE NOSTALGIA – her first as a solo artist – Lopez wanted to create a soundscape from a pre-loss perspective, revealing how the darkness she experienced was just microcosms of her being. HYPE NOSTALGIA reckons with the emotional rollercoaster Lopez has been riding the past few years, and reimagines it. In 2015, Lopez lost her father to suicide and six months later her best friend passed away in a water accident. “Those two events within that six month-period, forever changed me, and I’m only now starting to feel like I’ve processed it after all these years,” Lopez says. The same week her father died, she went on tour, and the same week that her friend died, Lopez signed to a major label, immediately working on new music. She never slowed down and neither did her emotions. Lopez went from being a high-functioning depressed person to encountering the most crippling mental health experience of her life.

TRACKLISTING 1. Tether 2. Come Around Me 3. Exceptions 4. Heights 5. Trauma 6. Post Trauma 7. Free Throw (feat. KRIS)

Art had always been her outlet, but it was no longer a coping mechanism that worked. Trauma had taken away her voice, leaving Lopez unable to sing for a year. It wasn’t until 2018 when she decided to go to therapy and began taking medication for the first time that she could process the trauma she had experienced, not only in the recent years, but intergenerational trauma she discovered in eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR).

Sure, there are heavy elements to the record: dark synths, future R&B undertones, propulsive bass and moody lyrics, but the softness of Lopez’s vocals elicits a quiet confidence. On the self-assured lead single “Come Around Me,” the most straightforward song Lopez has ever written, she confronts being taken advantage of as a gay woman of color in the music industry. “None of this fake shit when you come around me,” she sings breathlessly. Lopez enlists musician Kristina Esfandiari (King Woman, Nghtcrwlr), to tackle the same subject on the anthemic “Free Throw,” meditating on the fake support that comes from their male counterparts in the music industry. The bedroom pop-tinged “Exceptions,” which is the album’s wildcard, finds Lopez confronting her former bandmate leaving the project and the idea that people outgrow each other. As HYPE NOSTALGIA reflects on Lopez’s own journey in reconciling with the darkest parts of herself and her life, she wants it to be something that can help listeners with their own mental health. “I just want to help other people,” Lopez says. “That’s what really helped me stay focused throughout all of this.” HYPE NOSTALGIA • North American publicity by Pitch Perfect • College/Non-Commercial radio by Terrorbird • Digital playlisting & positioning by Terrorbird • Sync licensing by Terrorbird • Facebook boosted posts and targeted Instagram dark posts throughout campaign • “Come Around Me,” “Exceptions,” “Free Throw,” and “Trauma” music videos in the works • Mixed by Neal Pogue (Tyler the Creator, Outkast, Kaytranada) and Wes Jones • Pressed on Bone Vinyl, includes free digital download

KALEIDOSCOPE New Spirits Known and Unknown

st 21 2020 2020 25thAugust September ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !

Soul Jazz Records’ new album ‘Kaleidoscope – New Spirits Known and Unknown’ brings together many of the ground-breaking artists involved in the new jazz scene that has developed in the UK over the last few years. Featured artists include Matthew Halsall, Yazmin Lacey, Ill Considered, Tenderlonious, Theon Cross, Emma-Jean Thackray and many, many more in this ground-breaking release. As well as sharing a pioneering spirit in these new artists’ approach to frontier-crossing musical boundaries, a further theme of this album is that many also share a determination to independent practices – and most of these artists’ recordings featured here are either self-published or released on independent labels. While the attention of this new wave of jazz artists up until now has been Londonbased, this album shows how this movement is spread across the whole of Britain (and indeed beyond). ‘Kaleidoscope – New Spirits Known and Unknown’ shows that while there is commonality in these artists’ approach to music, there is a wide variety of styles – from deep spiritual jazz, electronic experimentalisation, punk-edged funk, uplifting modal righteousness, deep soulful vocals and much more. Soul Jazz Records’ new release comes as a superb one-off pressing special deluxe triple album edition with a bonus limited-edition single, a standard triple album, and a deluxe double CD pack. This album also comes with extensive sleevenotes, artist interviews and exclusive photography. Soul Jazz records are also releasing an exclusive one-off pressing double-headed 12” single featuring Theon Cross and Pokus to coincide with the ‘Kaleidoscope’ album release.

Bogdan Raczynski Samurai Math Beats

CAT NO: REDISC1 UPC: 5060384619019 RELEASE DATE: 25th September 2020 OVERVIEW:

Mathematics strikes back! The second of three albums released in 1999 for the Rephlex label, Samurai Math Beats exists somewhere between the outsider jungle mined by labelmates Aphex Twin and Squarepusher (dubbed “drill’n’bass”) and the sun-bleached public information music of Warp artists such as Plone and Boards Of Canada. Whilst many listeners at the time were left scratching their heads at the full on collision of hyperkinetic rhythms and arcade game melodies, in many ways the record pointed the way towards future musical mutations, from the frenetic BPMs of footwork to the deconstructed pop music of Mica Levi. Re-cut by Beau Thomas and available on vinyl for the first time since original release. Contains download card and 24” x 12” poster.

“Classic braindance” - Hardwax “Low-budget keyboards, Japanese robots, brown cardboard, child-like melodies, hyperactive machinery, kung-fu, drums, drums, and more drums.” - All Music "Bogdan was a massive inspiration for some of my tracks on the Drukqs album, the fact he was doing it all on a shit PC tracker… totally amazing. This was before 99.9 percent of people used the computer for everything. His records are so underrated." - Aphex Twin This reissue follows on from the 2019 Disciples release Rave 'Till You Cry, a collection of unreleased tracks and versions from the Bogdan Raczynski vaults. It also marks the launch of a new sub-imprint, R.A.T.S. Whereas the main Disciples LP series documents unreleased tracks and creates new bespoke collections of an artists work, and the ‘half-disciples’ cassette series takes deeper dives into the catalogue of the focus artist; the R.A.T.S. series is a little but more traditional and will release select represses of out-of-print albums, with original art and masters faithfully reproduced.

“Save Myself” follows the global hit success of her previous single “Moral of the Story”, which, following a high-profile placement on the Netflix film, To All The Boys: P.S. I Still Love You, has achieved over 280 Million streams globally, has become RIAA certified Gold in the USA, and is climbing radio charts around the world. The newly released, re-imagined version featuring pop superstar Niall Horan came out on 17th June, and has already accumulated more than 18 million streams and was featured on 29 New Music Friday playlists. Ashe describes “Save Myself” as the precursor to "Moral of the Story" instead of the follow up. People say there are five stages of grief; I wrote "Moral of the Story" in the fifth stage of grieving my relationship: acceptance. "Save Myself" (although, written post Moral) is about my second stage: anger. It means the world to have a chance to express the anger I felt in a healthy way, cause whether we like it or not, our anger demands to be felt and let out. “Save Myself” was produced by Jason Evigan, (credits include Maroon 5, Madonna, David Guetta, Demi Lovato) Big Taste, (Justin Bieber, Adam Lambert, Madison Beer) and was mixed by Manny Marroquin (Pink, John Mayer, Shakira, Rihanna).

HIGHLIGHTS – “Moral of the Story” (produced by FINNEAS with lyrical contribution from Billie Eilish) is RIAA certified gold in the US and is currently charting at Pop, Hot AC and Alternative radio formats in the US. The song has accumulated 280 million total global streams – Previous tours alongside Lewis Capaldi, The Chainsmokers, Shaun Frank, Whethan, LAUV, Louis The Child, Hobo Johnson, Quinn XCII and more. – Previous collaborations include a co-wrote for Demi Lovato on “You Don’t Do It For Me Anymore”, and tracks with Niall Horan, Louis The Child, Big Gigantic, Shaun Frank, Quinn XCII, filous, craves, Bearson, Whethan, and Party Pupils. – High profile syncs with Netflix, Taco Bell, MTV, Chaumet, Nascar, and Fox. QUOTES “Paired with her elastic, weightless pixie voice, Ashe's meditation on divorce and healing strikes the perfect balance. It doesn't simply float in and out of your ears… it takes root and blossoms, becoming rich and meaningful and adaptable in the way that so many hitmakers strive for.” - Insider

Anteloper Tour Beats Vol. 1 Anteloper is a duo of psychedelic sonic compatriots starring a pair of raggedy celestial sound warriors: trumpeter jaimie branch and drummer Jason Nazary. These longtime friends and collaborators met as young explorers and consider their electronic duo a continuous experiment into the unknown sonic abyss. Recent results have come back as mind-bendingly abstract head boppers, improvised organisms guided by a unique desire to hear what hasn’t been heard before. This is music made of and for the moment, tipping towards the future, moving feet to the new-new beat. Of Anteloper, in his liner notes for their 4/20/2018 debut Kudu, audiovisual avant-garde sage Rob Mazurek says: “Multiple dimensions collide and caress like a wooly tiger, kissing suns and embracing the nothingness, cracking this nothingness into sheets of corrugated dreams…” Despite only being released on cassette, Kudu was dubbed one of the “Best Albums of 2018” by Bandcamp, Pop Matters, and Rolling Stone, who said “the duo convincingly bridges woozy psychedelic abstraction and furiously propulsive free funk... fractured beats and pealing, effects-heavy brass suggests a punkminded update of Miles Davis’ most thrillingly weird Seventies explorations…” IARC0034 Anteloper Tour Beats Vol. 1 F o r ma t / Re l e a s e Da t e : Vinyl LP – September 25th, 2020 Digital – July 1st, 2020 RI YL: The Comet Is Coming, Jeff Parker, Chicago Underground Duo, Moses Boyd, Oneida, EmmaJean Thackray, Deantoni Parks, Helado Negro

In May 2018, Branch took up a month-long residency at Pioneer Works, an art center down the street from her home in Red Hook, Brooklyn, with a recording studio attached. She called up Nazary, and he rolled by the studio loaded with acoustic drums, electronic triggers, modular FX unit, synths, sequencers, and a myriad of processors. Branch engineered the recordings, and brought her rig to the table: trumpet, synths, delay/looper pedal, auxiliary percussion, and a Roland TR08 drum machine. Then they did what they always do — rolled tape and started from nothing. In the Fall of 2019, they set out for the “Ante-Myths Sonic Projections Tour” that took them across the US alongside DC duo Blacks’ Myths. For the journey, they self-produced a limited-edition tour tape, Tour Beats Vol. 1, with recordings from the Pioneer Works sessions. For Summer 2020, International Anthem is proud to re-present Anteloper’s Tour Beats Vol. 1 on 45RPM 12” vinyl in a package featuring artwork by Branch, photos by Richard R Ross, and liner notes as poem, again, by Rob Mazurek: “citing against the pricks, within sullen elastics, ecstatic pulse weft; new informal districts of time and energy…” International Anthem Recording Co. 3231 S Halsted St #222 Chicago, IL, 60608 www.intlanthem.com

Carlos Niño & Miguel Atwood-Ferguson Chicago Waves In late November of 2018, long-time collaborators (& life-long Los Angelenos) Carlos Niño & Miguel Atwood-Ferguson flew to Chicago to participate in the album release performance of Makaya McCraven’s Universal Beings. Just 11 months prior, Carlos & Miguel were part of recording the ‘Los Angeles Side’ of Universal Beings at Jeff Parker’s house in Altadena, California, and this performance in Chicago would be the first time that all of the musicians reunited to re-learn and perform the music they’d collectively composed during those sessions. The Universal Beings performance and preceding days of rehearsal took place at the iconic South Shore Cultural Center – a historic gilded-era urban club-turned-public facility deep on Chicago’s Southside and right along the reedy shore of Lake Michigan, giving the building’s backdrop an infinitely blue Northern expanse.

The night after the performance at South Shore Cultural Center, friend of International Anthem Jeremy Cunningham was scheduled to debut new music (The Weather Up There, which has since been released on Northern Spy Records) at our HQ, Co-Prosperity Sphere. Since Carlos & Miguel were still in Chicago (before they’d head to NYC for a second Universal Beings performance at Le Poisson Rouge), we invited them to do a Special Guest duo set to open the show. At the conclusion of their 44-minute improvised set that night, Carlos spontaneously dubbed the piece “Chicago Waves.” His proclamation gave us the distinct impression that the previous days spent in South Shore (and the many commutes to-and-from, along Lake Shore Drive) had imprinted the deep blue vastness of early-Winter Lake Michigan into Carlos & Miguel’s respective & collective consciousness, and thus, into the spirit of the luminous music they created that night at Co-Prosperity Sphere. We at IARC are happy to share Chicago Waves with the world in a time when peace-bringing sound and a sweet memory of live music, sparkling inside the collective breath of community in community space, has potential to provide the utmost nourishment.

OVERVIEW

Free Humans is the new album from Hen Ogledd; the cosmic quartet comprised of Richard Dawson, Rhodri Davies, Sally Pilkington and Dawn Bothwell.

Free Humans picks up where the luminous Mogic left off, taking a deliberately organic and natural approach to follow Mogic’s digital overtones and themes of artificial intelligence. Bouncing off the walls with sonic ideas, sociological and environmental barbs, and hilarious but sentimental wordplay, Free Humans perfectly encapsulates Hen Ogledd's democratic whole. In their own words, Hen Ogledd perfectly set up the delightfully kaleidoscopic landscape of what you're about to hear in Free Humans:

FREE HUMANS is a sprawling musical map of mysterious lands – beaches, holy cities, discotheques, graveyards, bogs, lochs, and forests on distant planets. FREE HUMANS is an exploration of the true nature of time. FREE HUMANS is the song of human folly as heard by the worms wriggling underfoot and the leaves flapping overhead. FREE HUMANS combines pop, dance, ABBA, abracadabra and the avant-garde to create an exciting and propulsive new sound for the onrushing 20's. FREE HUMANS is an expression of friendship and fellowship. FREE HUMANS is an egg within an egg within an egg within an egg...

SELLING POINTS • Free Humans is the second album from Hen Ogledd for Weird World, following their 2018 label debut, Mogic . • Double LP comes with download card. • Radio campaign to impact upon release.

Not A Gang Duet For Guitars #1

LP-JBR-0061X

• Limited edition INDIE RETAIL pressing on coke-bottle clear vinyl Originally released in 1999, M. Ward's debut is a sparse, mostly live affair recorded with pal and engineer Adam Selzer of Norfolk & Western at Type Foundry Studio in Portland, OR. Listeners who are already accustomed to Ward's breathy, conversational vocal delivery and soft-picked, West Coast Americana melodies will find much to love here. Duet for Guitars #2 is peppered with instrumentals in the John Fahey and Bad Timing-era Jim O'Rourke vein, and Ward's lackadaisical picking sounds just as lazily precise here as it does on future recordings. There's a real warmth to the sessions that transcends the often bare-bones production. For the most part, it sound like most takes were done live with two microphones, with the occasional overdub, and that style suits Ward's dreamy tales of molasses-slow teenage summers ("Beautiful Car") and oddball parables like "Fishing Boat Song." It's also interesting to hear him shedding the inflections of some of his more obvious heroes like Neil Young ("Who May Be Lazy") and Bob Dylan ("It Won't Happen Twice").

Sophia Loizou Untold

Release date: 09/25/20 Composer and multidisciplinary artist Sophia Loizou's new album for Houndstooth, Untold, depicts a series of speculative sonic landscapes. Animals, ocean waves and weather systems are abstracted into ecocentric cyber-dreams in powerful ambient electronic compositions, inviting us to try to see the Earth through the eyes of others. Untold is not about the natural or the technological but the relationships between the two, where sonic textures, breaks and melodies are shaped by the dynamics of a lion’s roar or the rhythm of a dolphin’s echolocation emissions. "I didn't want to make it human-centric," explains Sophia. "I wanted to remove my compositional and structural domination, to find ways to make it about the symbiosis of systems I see in the world." “In essence Untold is soundsystem music inspired by my formative experiences at outdoor raves where the sound of music mixed in with the natural soundscape. It was the catalyst to the other aspects of my research and is a development on my previous releases.” Highlights: • Loizou is currently working on a PhD at Goldsmiths, University of London, and is a lecturer in music production. • Loizou operates at the intersection of contemporary electronic music, speculative fiction and the ecological. • 100 of 300 limited edition blue vinyl exclusive to Redeye.

Future Child is a departure and extension of their previous work, expanding on propulsive angularities, complex and experimental instrumentations, loops and feedback, the hum and whirr of the Moog, frenetic percussion, and intertwined guitar lines, from articulated to visceral. Recorded and mixed by Jesse Gander in spring of 2019 at Rain City Recorders in Vancouver, Canada, and mastered by Stu McKillop, Future Child is heavier and tighter than past works, awash with technical soundscapes, percussive momentum, and an underlying warmth within the sonic assault. Jesse has recorded Brutus (Sargent House), White Lung (Domino), Japandroids (Polyvinyl) and is known for representing a band's live energy while getting a thick, full sound. Kim produced the record, aiming to make the sound trippier and fuller than past outings, adding dense textures, buzz, blare and sonic experimentations. Hooks and explorations are at play within compositional frameworks, the dialogue between guitar, Moog, vocals and drums always pushing the boundaries. “Virtuosic and chaotic soundscapes.” Femme Wave Festival Recap: Beat Route "Reminiscent of Hella or Don Cab." "Complex conversational playing." "Trippy as fuck." Discorder Magazine WWW.KILLROCKSTARS.COM

TRACKLIST: SIDE ONE: OPEN THE GATES (16:59)

SIDE TWO: OSIRIS LIVE (16:24)

London seven-piece Maisha return with new single ‘Open The Gates’, a 16-minute epic that draws deep rhythmic and musical tangents out of a simple melody and bassline. It comes backed with a beautiful live recording of ‘Osiris’ (taken from 2018 album “There Is A Place”), where the band amp up the original’s energy even higher, the track’s lyrical refrain pushed to maximum effect. Released on Brownswood Recordings, the record is manufactured in partnership with The Vinyl Factory, who will be pressing it on 100% recycled vinyl. The recording of ‘Osiris’ is taken from the band’s final show of 2019, in Lille, and sees bandleader Jake Long joined by the original line-up from the album sessions – Amané Suganami, Twm Dylan, Tim Doyle,Yahael Camara-Onono, Shirley Tetteh and Nubya Garcia (plus the bonus addition of regular band member Al MacSween on organ). It followed a heavy period of touring where they played sell out shows and festivals across the world. This included a series of shows with legendary saxophonist Gary Bartz, where they played a headline slot at Gilles Peterson’s debut We Out Here Festival and a show at Royal Festival Hall for the 2019 London Jazz Festival. The band announced their arrival with 2018 debut album “There Is A Place”, praised in The Observer, The Wire, Uncut, MOJO and Clash, drawing them support from Mary Anne Hobbs and Gilles Peterson on BBC 6 Music, and live sessions on BBC Radio 3’s J to Z and for Red Bull Music. They recorded a 2020 album “Night Dreamer” in collaboration with Gary Bartz. These two new recordings pay tribute to the group’s evolving make-up and style. On ‘Open The Gates’, regular touring band members Binker Golding and Tamar Osborn were in the studio, bringing their unique styles to the recording. While the live version of ‘Osiris’ is a document of how the way they play the song has grown and changed as they’ve toured and switched up the line-up. CHRIS SMITH SECOND HAND SMOKE STREET DATE SEPTEMBER 25 Second Hand Smoke is the long-awaited new record from Melbourne guitarist Chris Smith. It’s gorgeous. Chris has, for roughly a decade, been out of the public eye, out of the scene and literally out of town. Living a quiet, small-town life raising his daughter, but working all the while. Making music from anything and everything, including the electric guitar he is famous for wielding. Recording bits and bobs on phones, tape machines, sometimes in the studio. Eventually, bundling it all up (50 hours or so worth) and taking it to Phaedra Studios where he holed up with producer John Lee and put together this truly beautiful album. Second Hand Smoke is an experience to be inhaled in one breath. Calming and expansive, full of sweeping cinematic vistas and melancholy melody, awash with sometimes ragged and noisy guitar. It was largely built from 8-track home recordings and layered with found sounds, field recordings, spoken word as well as multiple instruments and vocals. Chris says he had no real concept for the album from the outset; it emerged at Phaedra with John. But like all Chris’s work, it blends experimental and ambient noise-making with more traditional songwriting. The results are extraordinary - introspective ballads, torn up blues and hallucinatory instrumentals. I’ll throw you a few references, but the truth is I hear something new every time I listen to Second Hand Smoke. Even more, I am reminded of the influence his singular guitar playing has had on music made in Melbourne over the last two decades. I told Chris I might bring up Ry Cooder, Mazzy Star, Rowland S. Howard, J Mascis and Neil Young as points of reference in this press material. He was ok about those but returned with Alex Chilton, John Lee Hooker, Thalia Zedek, Jon Brion and Dusty Springfield. And you’ll hear a bit of all that on Second Hand Smoke but really, Chris has a sound all his own.

alcohol abuse, and the dissolution of relationships. Bendrix wrote most of the album on a vintage Harmony H162 acoustic guitar that he found at a flea market in Kentucky and restrung with higher pitched strings (a “Nashville tuning”). After running the tracks through a Tascam four track cassette recorder, which sped the songs up ever so slightly, Bendrix added layers of lap steel, dobro, and pedal steel. “I tried to pair instruments that typically aren’t used together--one’s that I’ve shied away from after playing them with uninspired country music.” ‘Deep Dark South’ conjures the feeling of wonder one gets from looking up at the vast Southern night sky.
