When pulling together the Conference agenda, it was a great window into just what everyone is focused on. The launch took place on 1 July 2022, with a number of key AGIG and Rinnai executives in attendance alongside Victorian Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change Lily D’Ambrosio and former Australian chief scientist Alan Finkel.

Stage one is targeted for completion by the end of the winter 2023 season, ahead of forecast shortages. Stage two is expected to be online by the beginning of 2024.

Qube Energy has been working alongside BAO Australia to deliver over 51 km of pipe to APA Group’s Western Outer Ring Main (WORM) project.

The WORM project is a proposed high pressure, buried gas transmission pipeline to provide a new connection between existing pipelines at Plumpton in Melbourne’s west and Wollert in the north.

The company specialises in providing quality products and services to owners and operators, refineries, plants and off-shore facilities, servicing clients in Australia, Papua New Guinea, New Zealand and South East Asia.

POG is one of those where it provides a platform to share. When you share new and good ideas you can influence the safety practice, you get this through cross-pollination of sharing to improve standards and the expectations of contractors and operators. That naturally ends up with improved safety outcomes. So APGA provides that platform and the committees put runs on the board which demonstrates real outcomes in safety. As a POG committee we have developed a national safety awareness package to help shires, town planners and landowners understand our role in their world and their role in our world. Our pipeline incident database is a strategic database to eventually help us manage improved engineering safety standards.

James has over 30 years of experience in the industry, starting out as part of the Dampier to Bunbury Natural Gas Pipeline (DBNGP) and now heading up field operations at AGIG to ensure reliability, good customer service and the future of Duringoperations.thattime, he has been a member and chair of the Pipeline Operations Group (POG), contributing to the committees’ achievements, such as organising Pipeline Controller Forums which brought together control room staff from operating companies to share information and set benchmarks in control room operations. Establishing a carbon efficiency sub-committee to share ideas on ways to save energy and establishing the Rotating Plant Subcommittee to share ideas on safety, cost-management and power output issues associated with rotating plant.

Safety. Safety is always first on the agenda. The safety committee, not just the safety committee of APGA, but all the other participating groups.

We are proud, across the industry, to have very high standards, which support our operations in Australia. It's only through that collaboration network that you're able to develop and support those standards.

Which committees have you been a member of?

Serving on committees gives you a platform and a vehicle to actually get to know people. You build friendships and you build those connection that no matter what problem you have, you can give somebody a call.

What has the committee done for your career?

Within the Pipeline Operations Group, we are a fairly small committee, but everybody that's there is there for the same reason, to share and learn.

What would you say to a person considering joining a committee?

I've always been a part of and committed to is the Pipeline Operations Group (POG). I joined that formally in the early 2000s, partly playing a role prior to that, but I have been an active member with that group for a long time, including chairman of the committee, which was a really satisfying role.

We have a vibrant group of people, a blend of newcomers and old timers, offering a voice for operators around the country. We were able to put problems on the table and a have robust discussions about them. Then at the end of the meeting, stand together have a meal and be social, which is a massive part of what the operators are about.Ialways bring it back to the single most important thing. When something goes wrong in your operation, and you need help, you can't get that expertise off the street. The ones you call on are those that you meet with at the committee meeting because they're the relationships you've built and that's the real value that I see in the committee.

Will you continue your work on the committee?

I became a part of the gas industry when it was still called the Australian Pipeline Industry Association (APIA). I was a member of the Western Australia (WA) chapter. Western Australia was granted its own chapter, which was slightly different than the east, I was a member of that chapter for about four years, back in the early 2000s.Theonethat

The contribution of APGA committees to the industry?

Absolutely. Whether I'm there in person or one of my people that eventually take it on. We will certainly continue to be a part of the Pipeline Operations Group committee.

For majority of the renewable energy campaign, the only broadly accepted solution to fossil fuel decarbonisation has been renewable electricity. This has meant that we have had to accept that we will have to sacrifice the amenity of today to achieve the emissions reduction of tomorrow. This paradigm however is starting to breakdown.Itisbecoming more widely accepted that renewable gases will be key to decarbonising fossil fuel use in industrial settings and hard to abate sectors, no longer requiring the sacrifice of entire sectors of energy intensive industry.

Prior to this study it was possible to combine the Australian Energy Regulators breakdown or retail electricity and gas costs with renewable gas production and infrastructure cost estimates to determine that net zero retail gas will be cheaper than net zero retail electricity.

Gas and energy policy

More important than what this study says in and of itself however, this study represents an important building block towards the holy grail of renewable gas advocacy – calculation of the levelized cost of heat for renewable gas use in the home. The release of this report provides the final piece of the puzzle to undertake macroeconomic analysis of the entire energy supply chain right the way to the thing that matters most to customers – the cost of zero carbon heat.

If lower cost net zero retail gas combines with lower cost renewable gas appliances, it may be possible to provide competitive renewable energy to the residential gas customers of today without having to sacrifice amenity, cost, or customer choice for gas appliances in the home.

Economics study indicates that electrification of residential gas demand may in fact have a net zero competitor in renewable gas thanks to the lower cost of gas appliances.TheGas Appliance Manufacturers Association of Australia (GAMAA) find themselves at the centre of the debate around electrification of gas use in the home. Approaches taken within a range of government and non-government analyses have all taken a strawman approach to considering the cost of net zero energy in the home, underestimating electrification appliance cost as a result.

Now, with an understanding of appliance cost and efficiencies, it will be possible to determine whether renewable gas competes with renewable electricity when it comes to gas use decarbonisation in the home.

Core to this strawman approach is a focus on energy bill savings coupled with a simplistic view of residential appliance cost. Taking this approach, several reports have heralded the bill saving opportunities of electrification despite the very real possibility that residential customers may spend more on the appliances required to electrify their gas demand than they would ever save on their energy bills.

Frontier Economics come to this conclusion by considering the full extent of costs involved in electrifying residential gas appliances. Where appliance cost analysis tends to stop at appliance purchase and installation costs, this study considered the cost of removing existing appliances, including any rectification work that might be required such as covering up existing ducts, plastering, and painting.

While energy bills are the most frequently experienced energy cost, the total cost of heat in the home includes the cost of appliances as well as the cost of energy used in appliances. It is possible for the cost of an appliance to well outweigh the energy savings which they deliver, resulting in a net cost to households despite energy bills being reduced. This is generally accepted as impacting renters and homeowners alike, with renters experiencing appliance costs through increased rental costs.

Importantly, the study considered that households can choose to either maintain or reduce their current heating amenity through the electrification process.

Concerned that residential gas customers were being led into higher overall energy costs, GAMAA engaged Frontier Economics to undertake wholistic analysis of electrification of gas demand. Taking a more robust approach than previous studies, Frontier Economics found that freestanding homes in Victoria would need to achieve annual bill savings of between $1,600 and $4,000 to break even while achieving the same level of heating amenity through the electrification of existing gas appliances.

The past year has seen considerable focus on the electrification of gas use in the home. But what if electrification of gas demand isn’t the panacea which advocates claim it to be?

Victorian Government bill saving estimates, Victorian households in freestanding homes risk losing $350 to $2,980 on a yearly basis through the electrification of gas appliances when choosing to maintain the same level of heating amenity which they enjoy today.

Further, to consider a possible cost premium for hydrogen ready gas appliances in the future, Frontier Economics conservatively added thirty per cent gas appliances costs. This represents conservatism on the part of Frontier Economics considering international evidence that one hundred per cent hydrogen appliances will cost no more than the natural gas appliances of today.Having considered a fuller analysis of electrification costs, the study found that electrification of gas appliances in freestanding Victorian homes would cost between $21,500 to This$42,000.isbetween $7,500 to $15,500 more than replacing existing gas appliances with hydrogen ready gas appliances. This casts a long shadow on analysis undertaken alongside the Victorian Gas Substitution Roadmap which anticipated total gas appliance replacement costs of $18,400.

latest report from Frontier Economics shows that enabling renewable gas in existing infrastructure can deliver a system wide cost benefit over the direct electrification pathway to reducing those emissions. Australia can create renewable gas networks that will provide reliable and secure energy that our economy and export partners can rely on.

Our research is already developing new knowledge for the industry to make these reliable, safe and secure networks a reality. We are progressing the testing of steel transmission assets, plastic distribution pipes and appliance end-use with hydrogen/natural gas blends. We are also progressing the economics, social license and network lifecycle research our industry will need to build business cases and reach investment decisions for the next generation of renewable gasToprojects.usehydrogen in new and existing high pressure transmission infrastructure in Australia it needs to be reliable, cost effective and safe. But as our gas markets come under pressure from global forces and disruption in the electricity market, let's not forget the size of the innovation challenge we now face. Our gas networks provide more energy in Australia than electricity and our industry will need to supply that energy need with safe, reliable and secure renewable gas while saving the 12 per cent of Australia’s carbon emissions that come from using natural gas.

The $95 million South West pipeline will connect two recently built reservoirs at the existing Beaudesert Water Treatment Plant to the SEQ water grid. The South West Pipeline is the second stage of the Beaudesert Water Supply Upgrade (BWSU), a long-term water supply solution for the region.TheBWSU incorporates three major elements that are key to the improvement of water supply to the region. The first of these is immediate improvements to the Beaudesert Water Treatment Plant including the construction of two new reservoirs, followed by the laying 27km of bulk water pipeline connecting Beaudesert to the SEQ Water Grid. The final step is the construction of a new water treatment plant which will draw water from the Wyaralong Dam.

Queensland has committed $40.4M for Mount Morgan pipeline

FFI chairman Dr Andrew Forrest said Gladstone will be the centre of Queensland’s “green energy“Thisrevolution".projectwill not only be a game-changer for green manufacturing in regional Queensland, it will also provide a major boost for the local economy and indelibly put Queensland as an epicentre of the coming green industry revolution,” Forrest said. The project is predicted to create hundreds of jobs across regional Queensland and according to chief executive officer Julie Shuttleworth, it will provide a significant “boost” to the Australian economy.

While Australia moves towards achieving net zero in the coming decades, Queensland is working hard to do its part. The state has responded to the increasing global interest in renewable energies by developing its Hydrogen Industry Workforce Development Roadmap 2022-2023. Furthermore, Fortescue Future Industries’ (FFI) first global green energy manufacturing centre has obtained planning approval from the Queensland Government.

To support the project STATS provided four BISEPs, slab valves, split tees and completion plugs, as well as hot tapping machines for 6-inch and 2-inch tapping. A team of four, including local technicians, supported the operation, carrying out hot tapping, isolation deployment and monitoring, and completion plug installation. Prior to deployment of equipment to site, function testing was conducted and witnessed by the client at STATS facility in Perth, Western Australia.

Hot tapping and plugging allows safe pipeline re-routing without interrupting production

he operator selected STATS hot tap installed BISEP technology to provide double block and bleed isolation to ensure safety of personnel, residents, and the environment during the pipeline relocation. The BISEP features an integrated bypass which allows production to be maintained even after the isolation is installed and avoiding disruption to the gas supply.

The workscope began by first excavating the pipeline at two locations, 357 m apart, this provided access points for the newly re-routed pipeline to be tied into the existing pipeline. At this stage, two split-tee fittings were welded onto the pipeline 20 m apart at each of the tiein locations, this provided access points to hot tap and deploy the BISEP isolation plugs.

With four fittings successfully welded onto the pipeline, slab valves were attached, and pressure tests were conducted to confirm their integrity. The hot tap machine was then attached to each fitting in turn to conduct the cutting and recovery of the pipe coupon. With

The purpose of the project was to safely re-route a 357 m section of pipeline to allow construction of a new highway, while production was maintained at 19 bar.

Once it was confirmed all the gas had been removed, the pipe was cut and a short section of pipeline was safely removed. ROSEN’s RoGeo PD and third-party IMU datasets as the baseline are possible if reliable, and high-resolution, logdistance-based pitch/azimuth values are available. Pipeline movement reports contain a detailed description of each movement area. These include graphs showing the vertical and horizontal pipeline trajectories and strain profiles and a joint number representation.

The premise of the technology has been demonstrated successfully in liquid and gas lines.

The new RoGeo PD platform is based on existing XYZ mapping inspection systems, but ROSEN has developed new hardware and software components to assess pipelines of 200 mm (8 in) in diameter and larger. Data on inclination and rotational motion is collected using battery-operated (microelectromechanicalMEMSsystems) and stored in internal memory. Bespoke algorithms have been implemented in a new dedicated software solution for rapid and reliable evaluation. The RoGeo PD probe can be installed on most

With this in mind, ROSEN has developed the RoGeo PD (PipeDrift) technology platform to provide pipeline operators with the option of running a simplified and more efficient inertial inspection tool to assess pipeline integrity. The RoGeo PD platform combines an IMU with a standard cleaning tool, which allows an operator to successfully mobilise and deploy the IMU with significantly less effort than an intelligent inspection tool, thus reducing costs and the resources required to complete the assessment. The solution has been successfully deployed multiple times in the last few years on a pipeline system with known movement areas and with historical ILI data from more conventional combined ILI and IMU technology platforms. Tool velocities of 6.9 m/s have been achieved.

All values and differences are within the accuracy quoted for IMU inspections at 80 per cent certainty and show excellent agreement between the two methods.

Sitting down to speak with The Australian Pipeliner, founder Hayden McDonald took a trip down memory lane and discussed what the experience of building Mipela from those very humble beginnings has been like.

“I’d say that I came to work in this industry by somewhat of a happy accident. I studied architecture and town planning at university, and my first two years of work in my career I was at two different engineering firms,” says McDonald.“Backthenthey were using draftees to try and design the alignments and communicate to the asset owners what we planned to do. However, in the early 2000’s Mipela pivoted its focus and began to dip its toes in the software side of the industry.

Mipela worked on and off again on the project, providing GIS and software-based solutions for Chevron’s PNG gas project from 1997 and into 2008. Once ExxonMobil took leadership and sought to redefine the gas project, Mipela continued to offer expert GIS services until the PNG LNG’s completion in 2014.Inthose early years, explains McDonald, Mipela was focused primarily on contracting and project-based work.

Building from there, Mipela continued to establish its services by creating its data management, data capture and data delivery tools—X-Info Connect, Aware and WebConnect. By developing its four core systems over time, Mipela was able to not only establish itself as a reliable and ever-innovating solutions-focused company but able to create a strong foundation based on hard-work.

“We saw there four basic functions happening in the energy and infrastructure space; these were data management, data capture, data delivery and data visualisation. At the time we were still building the company and developing our strengths as a business and we couldn’t afford to build all four of those modules; so we built maps,” says McDonald.

It now also measures the output voltage on the cathodic protection unit (CPU) as well as the current demand (amps) of the output. The fourth channel may be used to monitor other inputs such as a foreign structure or other configurable input.

When performing an instant off reading, the units automatically switch to a high-resolution data logging mode, taking readings at half second intervals to ensure an accurate instant off potential reading is recorded.

There have also been some exciting developments in the technologies that the GreenAmp can use to communicate data to the cloud or portal. With recently successful trials using the Sigfox protocol to send data from a GreenAmp unit to the secure online portal.

Sigfox is a low power, internet of things transmission technology that is rapidly expanding. The idea is that anyone can install a Sigfox base station in a location and connect it to the internet. Once a base station is in place, any Sigfox devices within range can connect and send messages through that connection. It cannot be limited to one network of devices but is open to all Sigfox devices that are in range, so as more and more base stations are rolled out there is more and more coverage for all devices.

Pigging Services

On a recent pigging services project a major almond producer in northwest Victoria utilised the pigging services provided by Horizon Industrial to clean their main irrigation pipeline. The pumping rates for the 2 km long DN400 PVC pipeline had steadily declined due to a build-up of silt and manganese iron deposits blocking the internal bore. While developing the PolyHorse, McElroy studied pipe storage at typical job sites. Commonly, pipe is placed on the ground beside the movable jaw of a fusion machine. Pipe stands are then set up on both sides of the machine, and loading equipment is used to individually pick up pipe from the stack and load it into the fusion machine. This

Stacking the pipe on the ground is not an ideal setup. It leads to increased contamination of the pipe and can even damage the pipe. In addition, when moving the pipe from the ground and into the fusion machine, there is a higher probability for damage to the fusion machine and possible injury to the fusion operator. Simply removing loading equipment from the equation and moving the pipe by hand is not a foolproof solution either, especially when handling large-diameter pipe. In fact, hand-loading pipe can lead to one of the most common worker compensation claims: back strain.

Studying the setup

With the PolyHorse, PE pipe is off-loaded from the delivery truck and directly onto the PolyHorse, where it stays until needed. To retrieve the pipe, the operator rolls the pipe down the rack and onto the integral pipe rollers, where it is easily loaded into a McElroy fusion machine. When the fusion joint is complete, the pipe can be pulled through the fusion machine, and the fusion machine operator can load another piece of pipe. This means the fusion operator is never waiting for pipe to be loaded, which ultimately means more joints per day.

The PolyHorse was designed to solve many of these jobsite problems. It consists of a series of adjustable pipe racks positioned on the movable jaw side of a fusion machine. Located in Falkirk Park Estate – near the Maylands Railway Station – Mephan Ferguson’s operated from 1890 until the early 1900s, when a new plant at Salvado Road, Subiaco, took over until the 1980s.Whileoperating as Mephan Ferguson’s, the company was responsible for supplying pipe to the Goldfields Water Supply Scheme – a 566 km pipeline that runs from the Perth Hills all the way to Kalgoorlie. Also known as the ‘Golden Pipeline’ sections of this pipeline are on the State Registry of Heritage Places and, in 2011, the whole pipe was placed on the National Heritage List.In1960,the Kwinana Plant was established, opened by the Premier at the time, Sir David Brand. The manufacturing of water pipes was consolidated to the Kwinana site once the Subiaco site closed down, and the plant has been producing pipe ever since.

Sijakovski brings decades of experience to the Directhitt team. He began his career in eastern Europe in the 90s, where a large-scale crosscountry pipeline in Macedonia exposed him to the brilliant innovations taking place in the industry at the time.

The machine was utilised by their client, OMV, in Victoria, for the Patricia Baleen Gas Field Devleopment Project. It was used to install twin 12-inch coated steel pipelines. The pipes were welded onshore before being pushed into boreholes. The method was repeated later by others who were dealing with the unique challenges presented by shore-crossing projects.

Since being formed in 1995 by Albert Hendrickx, the company has continued to deliver projects to satisfaction, and to earn a stellar reputation as the contractor of choice for clients across a vast array of markets.

Around the same time as Sijakovski was cutting his teeth on the few trenchless crossings along that pipeline, Directhitt was being established to promote better understandings of those kinds of installations for both the construction and utility industries.Sincebeing formed in 1995 by Albert Hendrickx, the company has continued to deliver projects to satisfaction, and to earn a stellar reputation as the contractor of choice for clients across a vast array of markets.

In order to cope with the requirements of drilling in urban areas and to make the use of green energy feasible in the long run, Herrenknecht has developed a very compact Hybrid Rig HK80CK on a crawler base. This rig is able to push or pull 80 t and has a torque of 60,000 Nm powered by a 250 kW electric engine. Several design features have been implemented to achieve a small footprint on site and high mobility for relocation of the rig.

At the same time, the compact Hybrid Rig considerably reduces noise and exhaust emissions for operation in urban areas. The unit is autonomous and runs all equipment from one electrical source. The electrical power can come either directly from the grid or from a separate generator. Typically, Direct Pipe is used to safely cross rivers. Thanks to further technical development and growing popularity among clients and contractors, the range of applications for Direct Pipe has steadily been expanded in recent years. Today, Direct Pipe is also increasingly used for pipeline or cable landfalls, especially where strict environmental requirements in coastal areas have to be considered.
