Who would have thought that there is a vegan candy bar, made with kava, a root from the South Pacific, made right here in Ormond Beach? Or tamanu oil and butters, from a tree in Southeast Asia, that can help heal tattoo scars? These are just two of many products made by Concentrated Aloe Corp. in the Ormond Beach Business Park on Orchard Avenue, a growing company that is planning to construct bigger facilities at the Airport Business

Park where they recently purchased the last lot available with utilities. There is still land at the business park that could be subdivided and developed. As their name suggests, their main products come from the aloe, a plant native to Africa now well established in this hemisphere including Ormond Beach. Known for centuries as a soothing agent for burns and cuts, aloe is now used to make dietary supplement juice sold in health food stores and large national chain stores. In fact, selling aloe gels to manufacturers is 40% of CAC’s business.

Their aloe comes from Guatemala, where they buy the plants from a farm cooperative and process them in a plant where they employ about 55 Guatemalans. Tim Meadows, president and founder, who has been operating the business in Ormond Beach since the early 1990s, said the aloe is an easy plant to grow. Originally from Africa, the aloe has no natural pests, and cows and goats do the weeding in the fields while also providing fertilizer. There are no aloe farms in Central Florida because the plant is susceptible to freeze. Meadows takes pride that they are a certified fair trade company, which means they abide by fair SEE CITY GIVES PAGE 10

More stringent rules about dress are likely coming to Volusia County schools, but it won’t be until after a lot of input from parents, teachers and students. Also, any new code would be implemented not before the 2016-2017 school year and will begin with a pilot program at one or more schools. The Volusia County School Board listened to a presentation of the history of dress codes in the county at their Aug. 11 meeting and gave direction to staff on the next step, which will be to develop surveys for public input. Parents at open houses when schools start will likely hear about it. “The one time of year we can cast a broad net is at open house,” SEE UNIFORMS PAGE 5

The Ormond Memorial Art Museum recently became affiliated with two national organizations. Most beneficial to museum members will be a new partnership with the American Horticultural Society, said Susan Richmond, museum director. “This will allow reciprocal membership privileges to nearly 300 member gardens across the U.S.,” she said. “This is a tremendous opportunity for our members to enjoy a visit to other gardens.” Also, the museum gardens have been selected to be part of the Million Pollinator Gardens Challenge by the national Pollinator Garden Network. The network has launched a campaign to register one million public and private gardens as well as landscapes to support pollinators such as bees, butterflies, birds and bats. Pollinators are responsible for one out of three bites of food eaten each day yet the survival rate of pollinators is now at a critical point.

stances, you might need a lot of help. When I saw Healthy Start, I remember thinking, ‘Wow, I wish I had that. I wish that I had somebody to stand by me, help me, validate me if I was doing the right thing or not doing the right thing.’” Though the organization provides a lot of services for women, men and infants, Morgese doesn’t want all the credit. She says her organization doesn’t act alone in helping the local people in need. “The Junior League throws two baby showers a year,” she said. “The United Way’s Women Initiative gave us the money to give women gas cards or bus passes to get to appointments. It takes a whole community. No one agency does this alone.” Coming up on Healthy Start’s 25th anniversary, Morgese said she’s taken time to really be grateful for what she gets to do for a living. “I feel lucky I have a job I love,” she said. “When I wear my Healthy Start shirt, parents I don’t even know will put their kid right in front of me and say, ‘He’s a Healthy Start baby!’ What a gift in life when what you do is a legacy that affects generations to come even if people never knew you.”

Start programs and initiatives is designed to lower the use of drugs and alcohol in moms in the state. Substance abuse among pregnant women is at all-time high. However tragic, Morgese says, the worst thing we can do is cast judgment. “It’s real easy to judge, but let’s help them instead,” she said. “If anything, judging just makes them go further into the shadows. It makes them feel worse about their circumstances, as opposed to knocking on a door and saying, ‘Hey, I’m about to be a parent, and my life is a mess. I need help.’ Though any mom could get services from Healthy Start, Morgese says they prioritize their patients through a screening process to determine whose circumstances put them at the most risk of having an unhealthy pregnancy. Factors like age, weight, alcohol use, domestic abuse and poverty can put women at the top of the list. After the screening process, the organization sends a letter to the moms making them aware of their services. “All new parents are terrified,” she said. “You’re elated, excited, terrified, awestruck, all these emotions come at you at one time, and depending on your circum-

American Legion Post 267 struggles with having enough finances to conduct their mission of public service, members say, and recently one of their fundraising methods has come under scrutiny at City Hall. In their meeting place, the historic building at 156 New Britain Ave., they’ve had “instant bingo vending machines” to raise money for several years. These machines dispense cards referred to as a “pull tabs.” The buyer pulls back tabs to reveal any matches, and stands to win $5 to $500. The city apparently recently discovered that the Legion has the machines, and after researching, found that state law says the games are legal for a charitable organization on city property but must be approved by the city. The city asked them to cease the games until a decision can be made. On Aug. 5, the City Commission discussed whether the Legion should be able have the machines. A resolution will be brought to them in about a month for a vote. BUDGET CRUNCH

Dixie Morgese experiences a lot of emotional moments at her job as executive director of Healthy Start of Flagler and Volusia. She recalls one in particular that she had while shadowing her employees while they evaluated a new patient, a 22-year-old woman who had grown up in the foster care system and was pregnant with her third child. “One of the questions we always ask is, ‘What are your strengths to help you through this pregnancy?’” she recalled. “I remember her saying, ‘I don’t have any strength.’ Our employee told her, ‘You have so much strength. You’ve gone through childbirth and raised children.’ The mom cried and said, ‘No one has ever called me strong before.’ Who was going to tell her how to be a mom when she didn’t have one herself?” Thankfully for the new mom, Healthy Start was there to provide guidance and assistance with all aspects of pregnancy and new motherhood. When Morgese was pregnant with her first child, she wasn’t so lucky. Long before she started working for Healthy Start — before she became a mom — Morgese got caught up in a life of drugs and alcohol that continued after it stopped being fun. She sought treatment and has been in recovery for 28 years. “I experienced a lot of different things,” she said. “I experienced postpartum depression, and I had moved here from where all my family was, so I was alone. I’ll always joke about the day I walked out of the hospital. I thought, ‘Wow, they’re letting me leave with this baby.’ All new parents are terrified.” She said her experience with addiction has helped her have a nonjudgmental perspective when dealing with moms in recovery or still working through addiction. “The biggest change you’ll go through in your life is having a child,” she said. “I see young moms who get pregnant, and all of a sudden their life is going to change very quickly. I’m very active in 12-step programs, and I see women all the time in there who are pregnant or that have children. It’s not the child’s fault that’s mom is addicted, but the child is the one who’s experiencing the (brunt) of it.” One of the many Healthy

At the Aug. 5 meeting, Post Commander Rev. Willie Branch told the commissioners that the Legion struggles financially to support community programs. They have supported the Salvation Army, Halifax Urban Ministries, Boys State, Boy Scouts, Jerry Doliner Food Bank and provided meals to families at the holidays. The Legion lost a big source of funding in 2013, when Internet cafes were outlawed by the state. MURKY LAW

For the current decision on the pull tabs, complicating the matter is that state law does not specifically state that vending machines are allowed, leaving the law open to interpretation. In the discussion, Commissioner Rick Boehm said he didn’t think it made any material difference whether a tab was handed out by a person or a vending machine. “They need help and they do good for the community,” he said. “If we can help them, let’s do it.” Commissioner Bill Partington encouraged Branch to find ways to build membership in the Legion to help solve their financial problems. After the meeting, Branch said they are starting to get Gulf War veterans. Another issue for the Legion is that they are responsible for maintenance of the aging building in return for paying only a token rent. They have asked the city for a partnership to help pay for maintenance. Branch said they will still have budget problems even if instant bingo is approved.

The City Commission presented a check for $1,000 in an emotionally charged ceremony on Aug. 5 to Ormond Strong to help them complete their latest mission. The check went toward their care package project for local National Guard soldiers deployed to Afghanistan last spring. The next night, volunteers packed boxes full of a wide range of personal care items and snacks at a “packing party” at Halifax Health Hospice on Booth Road. Diane Adams, volunteer coordinator at the hospice, said they encourage public use of their facilities and one fourth of the patients are veterans. Will uniforms yield less disruption?

ADVANTAGES OF UNIFORMS

Gary Marks, area 1 superintendant, told the board it’s easier to enforce a code for uniforms than a broader dress code, because there is less room for interpretation. “When it’s broad, you can look across a courtyard and see 30 violations,” he said. The board overall seemed to believe uniforms provide benefits. “I just think there will be a sense of team,” said board member Melody Johnson. “I like the idea of having some pride. And

the kids that can’t afford expensive clothes … suddenly they are equal.” Marks, along with Vickie Presley, Area 2 superintendant, and Nancy Wait, director for community information, explained to the board the difference in moderate, intermediate and strict uniform codes. For example, an intermediate uniform would be to require a polo shirt in a variety of colors. In a strict uniform, shirts would all be the same color. Wright liked the idea of the same color, saying it would be easy to glance at a crowd and find someone who didn’t belong. She also suggested a different color for different grades. Wait said when dress codes were first introduced in Volusia County in the 2011-2012 school year, there were reports of less disruption in the schools. Wait said there have been chal-

lenges, however, such as enforcing the mid-thigh rule for shorts. Wright said clothing makers didn’t make that length for young girls. ENFORCEMENT PRESENTS PROBLEMS

Marks warned the board that enforcement would be difficult. He said in a school of 3,000 students, there might be 10%, or 300, who didn’t comply in the beginning. Administrators would have to remove them from class and they would miss instruction time. Chairwoman Linda Costello said she was sorry they would miss class time, but that would be their own choice. Costello asked Marks, Presley and Wait to provide some guidelines and suggestions for a pilot program. The board will likely take up the matter again at their first meeting in September.

Geallis promoted to director at HUM The Board of Directors of Halifax Urban Ministries announced on Aug. 6 that Mark Geallis will become the executive director beginning on Aug. 15. Geallis came to HUM in 2012 as director of community relations and development. An ordained minister, he previously worked as a church missions and outreach director. Prior to entering the ministry in 2009, he had over 30 years of business experience. Troy Ray, executive director of HUM for the past 12 years, is leaving to become executive director of a faith-based nonprofit called Open Arms International, a ministry in Kenya, which rescues orphaned children and places them in foster homes. The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office has announced a new number for cell phones for nonemergency situations. The Communication Center has worked with wireless service providers to implement the feature, according to a statement. Dialing #8276 from a cell phone will connect citizens and visitors in Volusia County to a nonemergency line at the Communications Center. The numbers, 8276, correspond to the letters VCSO on the keypad. If the cell phone call does not go through because of not being in a service area, callers can dial the regular nonemergency number: 239-8276 in Northeast Volusia; 943-8276 in West Volusia; and 409-8276 in Southeast Volusia.

Port Orange man injured in crash Ormond Beach police are investigating a crash that occurred about 7 a.m. Aug. 7 in the 1190 block of N. U.S. 1. said School Board Superintendent James Russell. “We will get their perspective. It’s only right to let parents know as soon as possible.” The school system currently has what the members call a moderate dress code. The difficulty in enforcing this code has apparently led to the School Board to consider uniforms. “That’s why we’re here today,” said board member Ida Wright. “The students are not complying.” Linda Cuthbert said she had been to schools and seen pajama bottoms and low neck lines. “Something must be done because of all the violations,” she said. She also said codes should be extended to educators, saying some teachers should dress “more professionally.”

‘Random Acts of Summer’ Who knew songwriters debated about things like fake IDs? I learned what it takes to write a real song.

COMMUNITY EDITOR

If you managed to break the lock on the diary I kept as a 10-yearold, you would find dried flowers, glossy stickers of Aaron Carter, and pages and pages of song lyrics. While they mainly involved my crush on the neighborhood cutie, occasionally I would write about the scenery of my front yard and hating my cousin. In other words, I thought I was a real poet. Until this week, I had never understood what really went into writing a published song. I envisioned a guy on the beach with a guitar, strumming into the sunset or a group of people in a conference room, working on little sleep and a lot of coffee to create the next big hit. I found neither of those things at the meeting of the local chapter of the Nashville Songwriters Association International. Comfortably spread out in the board room of the Oceanside Country Club in Ormond Beach, the group of five writers included those with experience,

If you’re old enough you don’t have to say it. If you’re underage, and you had an ID, that’s worth some soul.” “I never went through that,” Fant said. “You never had a fake ID?” Karen said with a slight inflection. “Dang, girlfriend.” “Well when I was a teen, I looked like I do now,” Fant said. “Being tall helped me get in everywhere. those with heart, and one who was dragged there by his wife. “I give her a word, she gives me the third,” Mike Loveless joked about his wife, Karen Loveless, as she shot him a glance over her glasses. Donna Fant defended Mike Loveless’ presence by saying, “Anytime we get off track, he gives us a loud ‘hmm.’” The group nodded in agreement. Their monthly, two-hour sessions start off by picking a song to work on. Everyone writes down a few of their titles on pieces of paper, and they are put into a basket to be picked at random. It’s true: Great song ideas don’t always come at the perfect moment. Sometimes, they’re just picked out of a basket. This month’s choice was Fant’s original “Random Acts of Summer,” a song she hoped would be written as a man looking back on the memories of the season as a teenager. Lyrics were thrown around with ideas like “cruising on the highway” and “watching girls hit the waves,” with everyone having a definite opinion on what it felt like to be 16 in July. Every now and then, members would have to use their own experiences in defense of the verse. “Making plans for that night, one of the best times for me. Beach party, favorite bar, I had an ID,” Mike McDonough read

track. I could never get in the dog track. I always had to sit in the car.” (Disclaimer to the grandchildren of all the members: This is not encouragement to drink, just a reminder that your grandparents are actually wild things.) After a few more minutes working around the idea of fake IDs, Jim Edwards brought out his guitar to help the writers with a beat. “Jim did you write anything?” Karen asked. “No,” he grinned. If I picked up any tips from this group of songwriters, it’s that both humor and heart are required while working. Also I got an update on the “Random Acts of Summer.” They scrapped that and changed it to “Summer Party Song.” I’d like to think it includes more references about their fake IDs. JULY 23

THERE’S A CRIME AFOOT 11:31 p.m. — 800 Block of South Atlantic Avenue. Grand Theft: The restaurant manager said he terminated an employee who threw his server’s book to him without the money owed the business. The suspect was later found at his residence. He hesitated when the officers asked him to take off his shoes. Nothing was found in his right shoe, but as the officer began to take off his left shoe, the suspect said, “I have cash in that shoe.” The officer found $820 in cash in the shoe. The suspect said he does not have a bank account and always keeps money in his shoe. The money was given to the victim and the suspect was transported to jail.

JULY 28

SNEAKY THIEF 11:27 a.m. — 1500 Block of West Granada Boulevard Burglary of Conveyance: A witness saw a male exit a vehicle in a parking lot, squat down and walk over to a parked car where the victim was loading groceries into the trunk. The suspect opened the passenger door, removed a purse and went back to his vehicle. As the suspects drove away, the witness heard the victim yell, “My purse!” The witness followed the suspects down Granada Boulevard as they threw objects from the car. An officer responding to the call recovered the purse and other items — except her keys and $100 in cash — on the road. Using the tag number, the officer was able to find a photo of the owner of the suspect car, but the witness could not pick him out of a photo lineup. The victim was instructed to change her home door locks.

AUG. 2

DUMPSTER DINING 11:32 p.m. — 500 Block of South Atlantic Avenue Trespasser: The

convenience store employ said the suspect took food from a dumpster and brought it into the store. He had caused trouble at the store before, the employee said. The officer gave him a trespass warning.

AUG. 3

NO BANK ACCOUNT FOR YOU 11:47 a.m. — 600 Block of Wellington Station Boulevard. Fraud: The victim was on a want-ad type website and responded to a post to advertise a soft drink with a sticker on his vehicle. He later received a check from a community college in the Florida Keys with in the amount of $2,580. He went to cash the check and it was denied. He said the bank made him sign a paper but would not tell him why they would not cash the check. He then went to his own bank, and was told the check was fraudulent. The bank told him his account would be frozen for trying to cash the fraudulent check and he would not be allowed to have an account for the rest of his life. The victim has tried to call the suspect on the phone but the suspect hung up on him.

AUG. 5

UNINVITED NIGHT GUEST 9:38 a.m. — First Block of Seton Trail Burglary of a Residence: The victim said he’d been gone for about two weeks and a neighbor had been watching the residence. The neighbor left town, and the victim believes the burglary took place after that. When he returned home, the drawers were open and clothes were lying about. There was a towel on the bed and It appeared as if someone had slept in the bed. The only things missing were a jar with $10 in coins, toothpaste, and coffee. Two expensive bicycles were not taken.

wage guidelines and give back through community involvement. He believes providing business and jobs is more beneficial to third world countries than traditional mission work. “Our mission is to support people,” he said. “I believe we’re truly helping. They’re glad to have us.” ALOE POPULARITY GROWS Meadows is a formulation chemist, originally from New Jersey, whose work history includes some time with local suntan legend Ron Rice when he started using aloe along with the rest of the industry. Meadows’ present company is growing not unlike aloe plants that spread wherever they grow. “Aloe vera is getting fairly mainstream,” he said. Their herbal extracts, oils and various kava products are also doing well. That’s why the company is purchasing Lot 2 in the Airport Business Park for $164,000. The price has been reduced to $154,000, after the reduction of a site plan credit, approved by City Commission on Aug. 5. The credit will help to offset site plan approval, impact fees, etc., according to Joe Mannarino, city economic development director. Meadows plans to start building a 40,000-square-foot manufacturing plant by January. They not only need more space than their present 16,000- to 18,000-square-foot facility, but also need a building with an electrical supply and design that will support their boiler and other processing needs.

Wayne Grant

Tim Meadows, president of Concentrated Aloe Corp., holds a mask presented to him by the people of Vanuatu, an island nation in Melanesia. The mask provides good luck to the traveler. In back is a painting that was done in Santa Domingo. Meadows, a formulation chemist, travels the world to find plants to use in his local business.

Meadows said they have been jury rigging equipment in their present location. JOB GROWTH EXPECTED

The company now has 25 employees in Ormond Beach and 55 at the processing plant in Guatemala, and expects 30% growth in the next few years.

The capital investment of the building is approximately $2 million, according to city records. On Sept. 1, the City Commission will consider another incentive for the company: no city property tax for five years. Mannarino said this type of incentive is well worth keeping the company and its jobs in the city.

Energy makeover makes sense, cents CEO of First Green Bank has been recognized for social and environmental activities. WAYNE GRANT NEWS EDITOR

“I want people to come to Florida 177289

and see all the solar power.” KEN LAROE, founder and CEO of First Green Bank

First Green Bank is becoming even greener. It recently completed a major makeover that included several initiatives to make the building more environmentally friendly. Ken LaRoe, founder and CEO of the bank, which is headquartered in Mount Dora, has described himself as both a capitalist and an environmentalist. He said you don’t have to choose between the two, and they are in fact complimentary. “I was blessed with a grandchild a few months ago, and that brought it home to me that we need to have a livable earth,” he said in a recent interview. The remodeling included a 20.14 kilowatt solar panel system, installed by Solar-Fit of Ormond Beach, which will supply nearly all of the building’s electrical needs. Water faucets and toilets, windows and the entire HVAC system were replaced with more efficient designs. LaRoe also said the building was not properly insulated, and that has now been remedied. He said the interior now has carpet and paint that has no “harmful toxins.” Planned improvements include a permeable parking lot, which will allow rain to soak into the ground, and native landscaping

that won’t require much water. Aside from having the satisfaction of being environmentally friendly, Laroe said there is a significant savings in water and electricity. In general, the bank saves more than 50% in energy costs through the use of “green” features, according to Robbie Gossett, executive assistant to LaRoe. LaRoe said he is going for certification from Green Globes, a nationally recognized rating system. According to the Green Globes website, the benefits of environmental improvements include tax incentives, employee retention and increased marketability. ENTREPRENEUR OF THE YEAR

LaRoe’s environmental concern was one reason he was presented with the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year award for Florida in the Financial Services category at a gala dinner in June, in Orlando. There were 10 other winners in the state in various categories. Other initiatives that led to the award, according to First Green spokeswoman Sydney Hirst, were a solar energy grant program, a minimum $30,000 wage for all employees and the bank’s involvement with a nonprofit company to bring awareness to health issues around the world. LaRoe said a person does not have to be a bank customer to apply for a grant to install solar energy. At the beginning of each year, the bank determines how much to fund the solar grant

First Green Bank is located at 175 W. Granada Blvd.

program, based on the prior year profits, LaRoe said. Also, employees contribute to the solar grant fund, by paying a fee to have a “casual dress” day. “I want people to come to Florida and see all the solar power and say, ‘Look what they are doing in Florida,’” LaRoe said. The bank also has loans available for solar installation. The $30,000 minimum salary has improved employee retention. “It also makes us more careful in hiring,” he said. The nonprofit company that LaRoe works with is called Clean the World. He said it was started by someone who noticed the soap left over in hotel rooms, and found a way to recycle it for usage around the world where soap was needed.

High school graduation? Check. Sign up for college classes? Check. Successfully own a business for one year? Check. During his final semesters at Seabreeze High School, 18-yearold Slate Gray was balancing class, friends and the heavy workload of starting your own business. “It was lot of late nights and early mornings,” Gray said. “I spent a lot of time in class doing work stuff, and a lot of time at work doing class stuff. Thankfully, I only needed a few more credits to graduate, so my days would usually start at the store at 7 a.m., then I’d go to class at 10 a.m. and be back by noon to work the store until closing. It was a lot.” But Gray said the intense schedule was worth it because he found what he really wanted to do in life. His business, Alive Nutrition and Fitness, is a community wellness center that offers herbal teas and shakes as well as free weight-loss and training programs. As a hockey player, Gray has always be interested in health and fitness. When he was 16 years old, his coach told him he had to put on 10 pounds of muscle. He found

Herbalife to be the solution. “I didn’t have a job, but I was helping at my mom’s business, Skate and Shake,” he said. “She kept telling me to get a job, but it wasn’t my passion to tie skates all day. So I asked her if I could do Herbalife instead if I made at least $200 a month. My first week I made $250 bucks, and put on eight pounds of muscle.” From there, Gray got all of his family and friends involved with the weight-loss program, and his clientele grew. In 2014, he opened his own nutrition club next to his family’s Skate and Shake.

STEVE SHEAD

Everything except football We try to entertain ourselves, as we await game No. 1 of the season.

JEFF DAWSEY SPORTS EDITOR

Y

TIRES BY DAY, SPEED BY NIGHT Everything about his Shead’s life consists of tire tread. JEFF DAWSEY SPORTS EDITOR

H

is day usually begins at 6 a.m. After breakfast and handling household issues, Steve Shead sets out on his 50-minute daily commute to Bunnell where he manages Boulevard Tire. There, and at the Ormond Beach store, he installs tires, talks shop, advises his customers about tire tread. Around 5 p.m. he packs up and heads over to Lake County to spend another couple of hours in his and his brother, Paul’s, garage, getting their cars ready for Saturday races at Volusia Speedway Park, or as Steve Shead puts it, his “sanctuary.” From sunup to sundown, Shead (pronounced “shed”) is surrounded with tires, dirt and cars, but he would have it no other way. In fact, he enjoys all that he does so much that he donates his time to work on the track’s equipment — graders, loaders, etc. — for free. “That’s just my way of saying thank you for all they do for us,” Shead said. “Doing that and all of the other race stuff is like a second job, but it’s a labor of love, so it doesn’t feel that way. I thank the good Lord every day for allowing me to continue to do this. To enjoy it the way we do — it’s something you can’t replace.” Steve and Paul Shead have been racing at Volusia Speedway for 18 years, nearly their entire 20-year careers. As youngsters, their dad, who was a dirt-track racer, took them out there a first time, and, after watching the excitement, they looked at other and exclaimed, “We have to do this! There’s got to be a way we can do this.”

Photos by Jeff Dawsey

Steve Shead is known in the Bunnell and Ormond Beach Boulevard Tire stores as “The Hurricane.”

“We were spectators for many, many years until we were able to get a car,” Shead said. “Once we could get a car, we began to strip it, with my dad being a part of all the process, and that brought everyone together, which is how it all started.” After some years into their driving careers, they built their personal garage, where they also work on other racing cars. There are currently nine cars they send out to the tracks to compete on Saturday evenings. Other racers know they can take their cars to the Sheads. Paul Shead won the previous two championships in the Limited Late Model Class division, and he has moved to the Late Model division. Steve, who’s still in the Limited Model division, is currently leading in points, and he’s looking to win the first championship of his career.

Shead’s brand new Super late model race car

“A championship win would mean the world to me,” he said. “I’ve been doing this for a long time, and I’ve come in second a few times, so there’s nothing I want more than to win a championship here. This is my home away from home. This is where I bring all of my problems and issues and race them away.” A few years ago, Shead broke his leg, and, when he saw a doctor, he was told he would have to get a cast. “I said, ‘No, you can’t do that. I have a race Saturday night,’” he laughed. “They put a splint on it, and miraculously, I finished third

that night and had the cast put on the next day. ... You don’t notice it during the race because of the adrenaline. But afterward, it was throbbing. It was quite throbbing.” At 51 years old, Shead’s not ready to retire. He’s actually looking to move up where his brother is. “Eventually, me and Paul want to compete at the top tier in Volusia Speedway Park’s full-blown Super Late Models together,” Shead said. “All the guys who run in that division know that we’re coming, and they know we are going to give them a good run for their money.”

es, football season is just a week away. So, what does that actually mean? It means we all get to offer our fun and “knowledgeable” predictions, hoping they come true, so we can assert to our peers how much more we know about the game than they. We get to forecast top players, top teams, championship contenders, how much teams will win by, how many games they will win and all of the other fun stuff. And, if our educated guesses fall short, then we won’t mind acknowledging that no one knows what’s going to happen, and we can revert to the truth of just what all of this preseason stuff really is: meaningless. And who doesn’t love the trash talk before a game is played? Social media has already blown up with crosstown rivals tweeting their arch enemies how they are going to beat them because they’ve been dominating second- and third-string groups in preseason. Even the worst teams look like state championship contenders against those who will probably never see the field. But, that doesn’t stop the chatter. Let’s face it: Everyone is currently 0-0, right? And then there is the cliche talk. Coaches and players will say things like, “We are going to give it 110% this year,” as if the regular maximum isn’t good enough. “We just want to get better every day” — which really indicates they’d be happy at the end of the season if they were 0-10 but were able to say they played better from the first game to the last. No matter what the conversation may be, any football conversation is welcome, and that’s why we will have all the preseason talk for the football fanatics in our upcoming sports section. There will be multiple season predictions for the five teams we cover, the top players we advise everyone to look out for and much more. So what role will all of this play a week from now? None. It doesn’t matter who wins the trash talk wars, who’s the projected best team in the area, who gives the greatest post-practice speeches and cliches or who looked the best against backup players. The only things that will matter are wins and losses. It all depends on the teams and how far they will go, not what I or anyone else thinks. (Yes, thinks.)

The Ormond Beach Golden Spikes played at Cooperstown and toured the Hall of Fame.

Golden Spikes make annual trip to Cooperstown For the past 17 years, the Ormond Beach Golden Spikes teams have traveled to Cooperstown, New York, the site of the National Baseball Hall of Fame & Museum and Cooperstown Dreams Park’s 22 fields, which host approximately 104 teams each week during every summer. The players participating in the Cooperstown Dreams Park National Invitational Tournament, in honor of their accomplishments regardless of outcome, are inducted into the American Youth Baseball Hall of Fame. Much like the National Baseball Hall of Fame for major league baseball players,

each participant receives the coveted Hall of Fame ring and officially becomes one of the Cooperstown Dreams Park Little Majors. The Golden Spikes’ 12 players made the trip, accompanied by family and coaches, on July 10, along with umpire, Rich Turner, although he did not officiate any of their games. There were 104 teams from across the country competing. During Opening Day Skills Competitions, the Golden Spikes made it to the finals and placed fifth in the Around the Horn competition. During pool play they went 5-1 and outscored their opponents 80-15, and, in one inning of a game, they nailed four back-to-back consecutive homeruns. Over the entire eight games played in the tournament, the

team hit 20 home runs and scored 94 runs, before eventually getting eliminated by a team out of Dallas. The players also took a tour of the National Baseball Hall of Fame & Museum and visited Doubleday Field, the legendary home of baseball. Coaches who attended were Tommy Johnson, John Moak and Michael Harsch; administrator: C.J. Mahlstedt; players: Matthew Donlick, Rhett Foster, Liam Garvey, Brody Holtman, Noah Harsch, Lucas Mahlstedt, Jarrett Maresco, Tyler Mitchell, Ty Moak, Shane Phillips, Zack Sager and Preston Wetherell. Many community business and organizations along with many generous individuals provided funds for the team to attend this event.

Seven gymnasts from the Ormond Beach Gymnastics Center competed at the AAU Junior Olympic Games this past weekend in Hampton, Virginia. Skylar Tan, Lily Jenson, Autumn and A’mya Daversa, Abby Pruett, Sarah Randolph and Victoria Buenner returned with a total of 25 medals, some winning first place. Ormond Gymnastics’ level 2s and level 3s from the Florida District were a part of the group of girls that won first place all around from Florida. “It makes me really proud as a coach to take a group of girls up to a competition as big as the

Junior Olympics and for them to perform as well as they did,” coach George Postell said. “They represented themselves, their parents, the Ormond Beach Gymnastics Center and the city of Ormond Beach. It was a great experience for the girls as well as the families that went along. They are an awesome group of girls.” Most, if not all, of the medalists frequently attend the center’s open gym nights that are held Fridays throughout the month. There is one coming up at 6-8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 14, for ages 8-21, and beginners and experienced gymnasts are welcome. It will be open-gym format with light spotting. Coaches will be on the floor at all times. The center is located at 432 N. Nova Road. Call 676-3250.

‘THE VIBE’ Sheri Zanosky has been practicing yoga on the beach for what feels like forever. When she was in the process of getting her certification, she took some photos of herself doing her favorite poses. Her daughter, Savannah, suggested she turn those photos into art. “I said, ‘But it’s just me, I’m not famous or anything,’” she laughed. “She said, ‘Well, yeah, but it’s just a random person on the beach doing yoga, and people will like that.’ I mainly do watercolor but she really pushed me into this.” This kind of positive encouragement was shared between mothers and daughters during We Are Yoga’s Waycation — a weekend-long yoga event filled with beach classes, art shows and friendship. “It’s almost like the way of life when you go on vacation,” said Will Jones, who owns We Are Yoga with his wife, Erika Jones. “You want to have a good time, things to look forward to and get a yoga class in. It’s a yoga vacation.” Over 50 people from around the city, state and country participated in the event that included yoga classes, an art show, a yoga fashion show, a tiki party, and a beach cookout. an artist and yoga practicer, displayed her zen artwork at the Yoga Art Show held Saturday night at Frame of Mind. “I doodled a lot, and it just progressed from there,” she laughed. “I do mixed media artwork because there are so many layers to the painting. Every time you look at the painting there’s something different that pops out. That’s what I like about it.” Since she identifies with Buddhist traditions, most of her artwork features figures and themes from the religion. “I’d like to call it zen art,” she said. “It’s really my inside coming out onto canvas.” Betty Rowe attended the event’s festivities because of her longtime love for the practice. Now 62, she started yoga when she was 24 years old. “It changed my life,” Rowe said. “Back then I was into marijuana and all these other different things. My teacher said, ‘Would you rather smoke or would you rather breathe?’ I thought she was so silly, but a week later I went to the vending machine to get my cigarettes, and I heard her say that and stopped.” She said yoga didn’t have all the hype when she first started.

“A doctor used to teach it because back then it wasn’t any big deal,” she said. “We did it at the Unitarian Church every Monday at 5:30. I love yoga.” Will Jones says yoga is a whole lifestyle that reflects well on Ormond Beach, and events like Waycation will help restore that historic, laid-back atmosphere. “Ormond is awesome, and we’re preserving its history,” he said. “We love to bring more exposure to Ormond Beach. Just looking back at the history of people who came to vacation here, it’s pretty epic. We’re restoring that vibe by joining focus with people who want the same thing.”
