CAR FIRE

Flames shoot out from a car that caught fire in north Ocean City in early January. Members of the Ocean City Fire Department were called out and quickly to extinguish the blaze.

DEAD WHALE

The body of a dead 20-foot-long humpback whale lies on the beach at Assateague Island after washing up on the shore in January.

BOARDWALK RE-DECKING

A piece of construction equipment sits facing north on the Boardwalk near Fifth Street among some torn up boards. Crews re-decked the Boardwalk over the winter, beginning with replacement of the wood from Ripley’s to Fourth Street and 12th to 15th, following with work from Fourth to 12th streets.

SLOW DOWN FOR WHALES

Right whale slow zones and seasonal management areas are shown off the coast of Ocean City. A voluntary speed zone that was put in place to protect migrating right whales was set to end in February, but was extended through March 3 after whales were detected in the area.

NICK’S JURASSIC GOLF MOVES

Rubber dinosaurs from Nick’s Jurassic Golf sit ib March behind a chain link fence on 19th Street beside a nearby lot that was supposed to be their new home. The mini golf course on 18th Street was edged out by a new office building for The Harrison Group and the owners of Nick’s planned to build a replacement course at 1901 Philadelphia Ave. However, the plans hit a snag when the owner of the nearby Islander Motel filed a lawsuit. Now, the mini golf course and a 36-foot tall ropes course, a waterfall feature, concessions and a parking lot is under construction on a lot on the other side of the Islander.

NEW BELIEVE IN TOMORROW STAFF

New Believe in Tomorrow House by the Sea staff members Amanda Koontz, left, and Mary Decker Brown pose for a photo in March inside the nonprofit’s headquarters in Ocean City. The pair were hired to carry on the traditions set by their program coordinator Wayne Littleton, who left in February, and guide the organization into the future with new ideas.

DREDGING ABANDONED

U.S. Coast Guard crews help to free a boat that got stuck in March in the Ocean City inlet. The United States Army Corps of Engineers abandoned the Ocean City Inlet dredging project this year and the Worcester County Commissioners were unhappy that they left the project unfinished.

NEW LUNGS

Scott Heiner poses with his wife, Emily Sachs Heiner in their Ocean City home in March. At 2 years old, Sachs Heiner was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis, a genetic disease that affects the lungs and other organs. The disease caused her to need double-lung transplant surgery, which insurance did not fully cover. The couple held several fundraisers and came up with the money, and Sachs Heiner was able to get her surgery in April.

NEW FIRE STATION 3

Members of the Ocean City career and volunteer fire departments pose in March behind dirt and shovels set up for a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Fire Station 3 in front of the public safety building on 65th Street. Council members voted in a slim majority in February to approve a contract to begin construction on the new station. The project, which is fully underway, will replace the old, waning facility on 74th Street.

OCEAN CITY FOXES

A fox steals a bottle on a beach in Ocean City. Red fox sightings are frequently reported around the resort. From spying on sunbathers to stealing their shoes, the furry creatures are hard to miss sometimes, with some spots, such as midtown around 70th Street, popular hubs.

DECK DECONSTRUCTION

Crews deconstruct wooden walls in March in front of the Lankford Hotel on the Boardwalk near Eighth Street. Members of the Board of Zoning Appeals denied the owner’s request for an afterthe-fact variance after construction started on a front deck that violated the zoning code and didn’t resemble approved site plans for renovations.

BEACH PATROL STAFFING

Ocean City Beach Patrol member Danny Granzow stands on his beach stand. Staffing in in the department was a major topic of conversation this year, with officials reporting early on that positions would be difficult to fill. City Council members stepped up by approving more incentives and bonuses for guards, or surf rescue technicians, including overtime for the first time ever, for the 2023 season to help recruit more applicants.

CONVENTION CENTER PARKING TALKS

A minimal number of cars occupy spaces within the convention center parking lot on an off-season weekday morning. The lot gets much more full during large events several times a year, which prompted resort officials this year to look into addressing parking needs at the 40th Street facility in the next phase of expansions.

ARIES – Mar 21/Apr 20 People may not be available this week to get together, and that is perfectly fine by you, Aries. Solitude is just what you can use right now after a busy stretch.

TAURUS – Apr 21/May 21 Taurus, expect a delay or two this week as those who you are expecting simply keep you waiting and it’s very frustrating. This will be a lesson in patience for now.

GEMINI – May 22/Jun 21 Gemini, you may envision a plan in your mind, but now it is up to you to move it from your thoughts and into the reality of coming to fruition. It will take a little time.

CANCER – Jun 22/Jul 22 Cancer, give yourself some time to have fun and play around. The inner child in you needs the opportunity to explore and try new things. You’ll have plenty of chances.

LEO – Jul 23/Aug 23 This week may bring many different feelings to the surface, Leo. You may not be ready to explore all of your deep emotions just yet, but you can start by being honest with others.

VIRGO – Aug 24/Sept 22 Virgo, empathy may inundate you this week, as you are in tune with the feelings of many different people. Others will appreciate your thoughtfulness in the days to come.

LIBRA – Sept 23/Oct 23 You have many chores on your list but things keep pulling you in different directions, Libra. if you can’t focus on something difficult, try a creative pursuit.

SCORPIO – Oct 24/Nov 22 Scorpio, you may find if you look ahead that there are really no pressing matters on your calendar. This gives you the perfect opportunity to have an outing and enjoy yourself.

SAGITTARIUS – Nov 23/Dec 21 Past memories could put you in a funk, Sagittarius. Rather than dwell on what may have happened, think about the future in your control.

CAPRICORN – Dec 22/Jan 20 Focus your energy on ideas this week, Capricorn. You might not be changing the world, but each innovation you think up will have a positive impact.

AQUARIUS – Jan 21/Feb 18 Aquarius, do not let moments of self-doubt derail you. Now more than ever, you need to believe in yourself. Think of this as a test that you can ace.

PISCES – Feb 19/Mar 20 Pisces, if you do not like what you are or where you are going right now, you have an opportunity to make any changes you want. This may be the ultimate resolution.

BUCKINGHAM PROJECT STALLED

Teachers, parents, staff and others gather in Berlin in October after marching down Main Street chanting “Build the Bear” in support of state funding to construct a new Buckingham Elementary School. Project plans hit a snag this year after members of the state’s Interagency on School Construction board decided not to fund design costs that were expected. County and board of education officials, along with parents and community members, have been pushing for committee members to change their minds, so far to no avail. The committee has graded the project low but members are set to make a final decision in the coming weeks.

Attendees of one of two public sessions held in October at Ocean City Elementary School on US Wind’s proposed offshore wind project write comments to be put on the record. Ocean City and Worcester County officials continued throughout the year to object to any planned wind projects that would be visible from the local coast. The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management hosted in-person and virtual public sessions on US Wind’s proposed project, and City Council members voted to hire a consultant to look into details of the project. Another project that Danish company Ørsted has been pursuing has hit a snag and will likely be be pushed back at least two years.

2023 SHORE CRAFT BEER FEST BLACK EYED SUSAN SOLD

The Black Eyed Susan drives into the Slaughter Creek Marina in Dorchester County on Nov. 16 after a two-day trek from Snow Hill. The saga of the riverboat began in 2019, when Worcester County and Snow Hill staff members pushed for the town to buy the 111-foot vessel to increase year-round tourism. The boat which needed some repairs, took its maiden local voyage in 2021. But less than eight months later, it was officially docked again after a U.S. Coast Guard inspection revealed a $600,000 price tag to bring it up to the standard that would allow it to transport passengers. Town officials decided to put the boat up for bid, and after some failed attempts, ultimately sold it to John Butz, the owner of Slaughter Creek Marina on Taylor Island, for a loss. The Black Eyed Susan officially left Worcester County in mid-November to dock at its new home, where it was set to become a marina restaurant.
