Cattlemen have been conditioned to believe the key to receiving big returns lies simply in running cattle with a black hide. But that’s just not true.

Our inbred coefficient of 24-36% ensures MAXIMUM heterosis when crossing on Herefords or other breeds.

Twenty Two for 2022 ROGER JACOBS, AUCTIONEER Billings, Montana e: Auctions@JacobsLivestock.com by ABP & Roger Jacobs 1. How did you get started as an auctioneer? I was very fortunate to work for the American Angus Association for several years in the late 70s and early 80s as a regional manager where I made lots of great contacts that were willing to take a chance on me as a young inexperienced auctioneer. The first person to hire me was Russ Denowh at Gartner Denowh Angus Ranch, one of the most respected breeders in the industry and his endorsement really helped. My inspiration to become an auctioneer came from tagging along with my father to a few cattle auctions as a kid and later listening to and working with some of the great auctioneers in the purebred industry. 2. What’s the furthest away from home you’ve been as an auctioneer? I have sold in 25 states and Canada, the farthest away from home has been New York, California, Texas, Mississippi and Georgia. 3. Aside from being the world’s best auctioneer, you’re also the best tour guide, and probably the best real estate agent too. Is there anything else you do that we‘re not aware of? That’s enough to keep me busy. I also enjoy being a lector at our church once or twice a month. 4. With the above question in mind, I can’t imagine you have much free time. Aside from sleeping, how do you occupy the other minutes on a given day? I enjoy bird hunting, fishing and gardening in the little bit of spare time I have. My highest priority is to spend as much time with family as I can. 22

5. What do you think about where the cattle industry is headed? I’m an eternal optimist and believe the cattle market will improve over the next several years. World population growth is going to require increased production and the production sector will be in a stronger position in years to come. 6. What advice would you give to a younger rancher today? Everything in our world is changing with all the technology available to us today. Look at all of your options and be willing to change. Learn from the past and the mistakes along the way. You can’t change the past so be forward thinking. As I look back over my career nearly every time I resisted change I was wrong.

American Beef Producer

February 2022

Twenty Two for 2022 7. What do you like the best about the real estate business? Every day in the farm and ranch real estate business is different. Showing and marketing listed properties is my favorite part and whether representing a seller or buyer I like the opportunity to provide a service to the client. 8. Your profile says you like to garden, what do you think of garden gnomes? No gnomes in my garden, just my green thumb and a lot of hard work and attention to detail. 9. You’ve been blessed with an amazing memory, not only to recall names but also where they’re from.. What other superpowers do you have? I don’t have any superpowers that I’m aware of but treating everybody the same regardless of who they are and treating people like I’d like to be treated has been a priority for me and is a key to remembering people. 10. What’s your favorite season of the year? You can’t say sales season... My favorite season of the year is fall when I can spend some time afield with my bird dogs and enjoy the cooler weather.

spilled his coffee into my amplifier and I had to sell the last thirty lots with no sound system. 14. Favorite vacation spot? That’s an easy one, Shelter Cove Lodge in Craig, Alaska. About August 1st every year. Great fishing and the lodge is owned by a wonderful family with great food and great service. 15. What’s on your bucket list? More vacation time and more fishing trips to new places. 16. Ford, Chevy, Dodge, or ? Ford all the way. 17. With over 45 years as a regional manager and auctioneer, what’s the one experience that stands out? You always remember the ones where a bull jumped into the auction block or got out into the crowd. There’s been about six of those. Also the first time or two selling a bull or female for hundreds of thousands of dollars. (continued on next page)

11. What’s your favorite steakhouse ? No question the Buffalo Block Steak House in Billings Montana. 12. Favorite cut? How do you like it cooked? My favorite is a thick cut New York grilled medium rare. 13. This past MT Angus tour you had several mic and PA problems, which you easily overcame. Obviously, you’re used to dealing with issues like that. Has there ever been a sale or auction where the problems stood out among any others? There have been multiple sound problems over the years. The most memorable was when the seller

American Beef Producer

23

Roger was emcee for the North Montana Angus Tour last fall

18. What stands out as the worst? The worst would have to be the time a bull jumped the auction block and hit me head on and knocking me out which caused me to lose my sense of smell. 19. 45 years is a long time. God forbid you ever retire, but if you do, what does that look like? Spending more nights and time at home with my wife and best friend Sandy but staying active in the real estate business. 20. You’re an avid hunter as well. What’s been your most memorable hunting trip? Spending days afield with my daughter Jackie while bird hunting, from the time she was 4 years old. Those days have all been special which we still do and she’s still an avid hunter in her early 40s. A couple trips to Canada for duck and goose hunting with a very special old friend, who‘s now deceased, are some of the most memorable as well. 21. What’s your lucky charm? My lucky charm is my faith and trust in God.

22. Favorite Actor? This probably dates me, but my favorite actors are Clint Eastwood and John Wayne.

THE ROAD TO by Tim McCray,

Derek, Willow, and Maverick picked me up in Phoenix on January 5th after a few short days with my daughter and my 1-week old granddaughter Chloe. My sixth overall (I’m catching up to Bob), but Chloe is also a rainbow baby, with some tiny shoes to fill and big holes to heal. Of course, the entire world had changed since 2020 (when I was last at the NWSS) and is still in that development mode, much like the yards at NWSS this year. My older brother Joe was of immense help in 2020, acting as my caretaker, driver, landlord, and assistant. I’ve been lucky to have him in Littleton, Co, in that I had a place to stay, warm free food to eat, as well as a place to ship magazines to for distribution. Back then, Oklahoma was a drive-through state on my way to Phoenix, not a destination afterward. I don’t even think Covid was on any radar back then; the world was normal. Jim (Sample, former publisher) died a little later that month, just after we had finished getting that year’s February issue off to the printer. Looking back on it now, I’m surprised we got through it all. After all, Derek, Valerie, and the dogs came

from California, we had a funeral, and a whole house needed to be cleaned out where our former offices were. We had some help with putting magazines together, and somehow we managed, like usual, a March, April, and May issue. In addition to all of that, this pandemic was just getting started. Of course, it’s something we’d all like to forget and ignore, and WE haven’t really talked about it. But I have observed and at least taken mental notes. Derek and I have managed an incredible amount of travel in the last two years. Most of which have been logged and written into several different issues. Despite there still being a raging pandemic going on, and no matter where we go, the virus seems to be peaking whenever we’re in those areas. Despite all of that, we’ve both remained healthy and unaffected, at least in the positive test sense. We’ve visited a few ranchers throughout our travels who have had it, gotten over it, and survived. We’ve also been in contact, maskless, and survived. Derek has to be over-cautious in that sense, and I had made up my mind sometime back in April of that year that I was no longer going to live in fear – if I got it, I got it. I wasn’t overly concerned but slightly cautious. I’m not an anti-vaxxer nor am I pro-vax. To each their own, I’m more like

Switzerland. I only mention that because I wasn’t jumping on the boat to get vaccinated right away. I see this as a science experiment, hoping to be in group two. It turns out there are more than two groups. With that said, I got shot just before I left for our three-week tour of Montana and such to ease my traveling partner’s mind. Plus, I didn’t want to be responsible if I wasn’t vaccinated if he got sick; aside from this 3rd appendage growing out of my neck, I’m fine. Ok, that part isn’t genuine. But God does have a way of looking out for us all or at least has enough of a sense of humor as my whole family tested positive just after Thanksgiving. We’re all okay, though, and if anyone else is keeping track, I was the only one who had a shot. I’ve learned since the beginning of this experiment more than anything, tomorrow is no guarantee, and there needs to be more carpe diem in everyone. So, as a result, I’ve learned never to miss an opportunity during travel to visit some ranches along the way. Sometimes they pan out, sometimes they don’t. Leaving Arizona on our way to Oklahoma I tried my best to line up some visits in New Mexico, but we couldn’t make it happen. Plus that drive turned into being longer than I was hoping for anyway. Though I’m sure we’ll swing through that area again. The Cattlemen’s Congress in Oklahoma City provided an alternative last year since Denver was closed. We heard that it was much better organized this year, and there were plenty of participants. Cattle were moved into the barns at the Oklahoma state fairgrounds, instead of more confined into the horse pens in the super barn last year. We also visited two popular steakhouses for dinner; our favorite was Charleston’s, where the food and the service were outstanding. Our drive to Denver provided us with a stop at McCurry Angus in Burrton, KS. When we arrived, we were greeted by Aubree (10) & Molly (7), who had just gotten home from school courtesy of their Grandfather Andy McCurry. We had a friendly chat with the two young girls about their school and ranch life. Then they quickly went in to change clothes and start their afternoon chores on a beautiful 60-degree day with plenty of sunshine. John’s youngest, Drew (5), the 5th Generation of Angus Breeders here, also made an appearance. Nearly 45 years ago, Andy & Mary (both 3rd generation Angus breeders) started McCurry Angus 36

with seven heifers out of 7 distinct cow family lines. They also started with no land, facilities, or equipment. In 2015 they were awarded the Seedstock Producer of the Year by the Beef Improvement Federation in Biloxi, MS. John explains that they had purchased the property they now call home two years ago, and his grandparents previously owned it. However, a couple of other owners had occupied the place in between. This year, the McCurry’s had just finished AI’ing before heading to Oklahoma themselves. John had a better perspective on Oklahoma this time since they attended last year and got the lowdown. He states, “the trade show this year was way bigger and a lot more organized than it was last year.” In addition, parking was “free and plentiful in OKC”. There have been some additions in power, but still there were plenty of generators lined up outside every entrance to the barns. However, Oklahoma is just getting started. We were told that more improvements are coming in the year ahead and we’re curious to see what they come up with. John has recently started as an outside rep for Kattle Energy, a subsidiary of Kansas Ethanol, providing range cubes and lick tubs for cows and horse feed and deer supplements. The McCurry’s offering is bred for the commercial cattleman, making the best cattle they can phenotypically but have a data set that makes them marketable. With balanced traits, calving ease, and enough growth, their end product merit is in check. This year’s sale will be on March 10th and will see sire groups from Coleman Bravo, Basin Rainmaker4404, KG Justified, Musgrave Stunner, HA Relevant, McCurry Bismarck & Final Answer. We’d spent the night in Quinter, KS, and after searching (& searching) for breakfast, we decided on the gas station for a few packaged donuts and a cliff bar. The joys of life on the road. We then pulled into Jamison Herefords just before noon, probably about a half-hour earlier than we were expected. Gordan Jamison, of course as you may know, had a cow dispersal sale last year and is getting ready for another bull sale at the end of this month. He’s confident that he will have another sale in 2023, although it will be much smaller. While he’s downsizing, we get the feeling he isn’t quite finished in the purebred business. Indeed, the Jamison’s are probably as well known for their horses as they are the Herefords by now, and Gordon expressed that although they have had Herefords all of his life, he realizes that the breed is changing, and he proudly admits that he is “old school.” Their horse operation has grown dramatically, and this past

year saw his horse sale exceed the Hereford sale for the first time. His opinion on the ultimate herd for a commercial producer is to “have the Hereford Angus cross then have your black baldy cow herd then use Charolais as a terminal cross. It doesn’t get any better than that, and it takes all three breeds to get there,” Gordan says. When asked about the cattle business, Gordan spoke in a stronger voice “Cattlemen need to band together and do their thing,” But admits, “we’re not good at doing that.” Gordan likes what he sees as some independent processing plants are starting up in Missouri, the Dakotas, and Nebraska. Gordan started flipping through our latest issue and made a few comments on the ads he saw. He pointed out that it’s important to show “where your sale is, when it is, and what you’re selling.” If people have to do more work like visiting a website to find out information, they’re not likely to do that. He also added something that was told to him previously “Don’t give someone a reason not to come to your sale.” We spent almost an hour and a half talking with Gordan and never left his office. It also felt like we could have easily stayed another hour and a half, if not more. But we needed to get back on the road. Arriving in Denver a day earlier than initially planned on we were forced to stay in a hotel for the night. We found a nice lipstick on a pig place reasonably close to getting into the stock show the next day. Our first trip into the yards was on Wednesday afternoon, and we were immediately spotted by Lane Giess of DLCC Ranch (Pierz, MN) and currently residing in Fort Collins, CO. while working for the American Simmental Organization. Today, he’s clipping a few thousand cows and apparently being the unofficial greeter into the yards. That was a very nice start to the week; thanks, Lane! I’m amazed when I 38

can recall someone’s name when I see them; I’m even more amazed when someone can recognize me. The best 16 days in January has been a well-used slogan. ‘There’s No Place Like Stock Show’ is this year’s slogan and entirely accurate. While most of the NWSS was familiar, there obviously had been some changes in the last two years. After getting our credentials Derek and I navigated through the expo hall and from the third-floor media department to the ground-floor stadium arena. I found myself lost getting there a few times and even more lost once I did reach the arena as it was noticeably quiet. It’s not that hard to get there, and on my last day, I could finally do it without second-guessing myself. I was shocked when I walked into the barn area “on the hill,” as it was sparsely populated. I knew numbers would be down this year, as rumors of a boycott of the state’s politics seemed to indicate. In addition, apparently we’re still in a pandemic. More people inside the buildings wearing masks than not – maybe 65-35, depending on what floor you’re on. “The Hill” and everything surrounding it was the same, familiar Stock Show. The Yard area is where everything changed. New buildings, some open and some under construction, and some just beginning construction. The yards are further away from where they used to be. This year there are golf cart shuttles to save a person the 5-minute walk to the new stockyard event center and the beginning of the stockyards themselves. We all knew the old wooden fences would be replaced with new steel structures. I wonder how many in attendance noticed the reclaimed wood on the new event center this year? I was also informed that they reused

February 2022

the pavers from the old stockyards in front of the event center, though they looked pretty new. The event center is located approximately where the old stockyard arena was located. But it combines the arena and the sale ring (formerly at the beginning of the stockyards) under one roof. The new stockyards are fully powered, fully watered, and fully moveable. The pens can be configured for cattle displays or taken down for farmers’ markets, an outdoor concert, or anything else. As I said, I’m amazed when someone recognizes me. I haven’t been around long enough, nor do I generally stand out in a crowd. So when I ran into Chad Murnin of Bar Star Cattle (Musselshell, MT) in Oklahoma City, he asked first what I was doing down there as he usually only sees me in Montana or North Dakota. When we ran into him again in Denver, he thought Derek and I were stalking him, or maybe the other way around. I hadn’t attended Oklahoma last year, and all I could compare it to were Denver of years past. So, I was interested to find out Chad’s thoughts on the two shows. “Competition wise there’s no comparison, especially in the open show. The Cattlemen’s Congress numbers were there in droves compared to Denver. The barns were pretty much empty up on the hill, which was certainly disheartening. But the shows that were in Denver were extremely competitive. The sales in Oklahoma have done extremely well with high averages.” The facilities at both shows have their differences as well. Depending on what you’re looking for, each has some positive attribFebruary 2022

utes. While the Cattlemen’s Congress was all in heated barns, they also had free parking, which was very plentiful. The yards in the Denver stock show are all open-air and exposed to the elements. Which, depending on the day, can be great or not so. This year we had a beautiful day in the high 60’s followed by a day in the low 40’s. But that’s Denver. Chad continues, “The new Denver facility is second to none. It’s outstanding. It definitely proves that the National Western didn’t abandon agriculture, and circumstances out of their control were the reasons why they shut down. Their commitment to agriculture has definitely shown through with all the improvements.” Probably the most noticeable (& since they even posted signs about it) No Generators – The Power is on us. Chad noted, “The pen show in Denver was a lot more conducive to do business, without having to hear a generator roar, than years before.” While OKC had more exhibitors, overall, the foot traffic in Denver was superior. Chad continues, “One thing that Denver provides is a platform to get in front of the public. OKC is essentially all cattle people, with very little public traffic.” So again, that could be a positive in either case, depending on what’s important to you. Actually it was Derek who said it best, “exhibitors were in Oklahoma and cattlemen were in Denver.” Well said, partner in crime. Regardless of the differences between the shows, the positives, and the negatives, “We shouldn’t

39

be in a cancelled culture environment in agriculture. We need to work together to make both events work. The challenge of having them almost overlap is a tough thing for a lot of breeders.”-Chad Murnin (Bar Star Cattle) I’m pretty sure we all need some healing of our own from the years past. We’ve probably all known someone to pass away before they were due. The pain of losing a loved one regardless of time spent with them is immense and sometimes crippling. I thought there was nothing worse than losing my granddaughter Callie in February 2021. It was easy

40

to become bitter and hate the world we live in. Panic, fear, and anger seem to be spreading and dividing us all in more ways than we ever thought possible. But there are some lights of hope ahead. Chloe came and started healing a big hole in my entire family as I started with. The NWSS returned with some vast improvements and many more to come. 2021 saw things beginning to relax and get us back to a new normal. Perhaps in 2022, instead of spreading fear and resentment, we can all relax a bit more and show each other more love and compassion.

SCIENCE “Defensins: Their Impact on How Genomics and EPD Projections Can Make a Serious Positive Contribution to Your Operation’s Bottom Line” by W.E. Julien, PhD, DVM. CEO of Anova BioSciences

Over the last few years, several articles have been published in “American Beef Producer’ that have focused on the creation of an operation’s positive bottom line through the strategic use of EPD and Genomics projections in cow/calf management. Two such articles, (Expected Progeny Differences by Randie Cuthbertson-Aug.‘21,p.36; and Time to Implement Single Trait Selection by Chip Kemp-May/June ‘21,p.8) are well worth your time to read again, and if you happened to have missed them, please do yourself a favor, take the time and look them up. In the August 2021 issue, Dr. Cuthbertson, has put together a tutorial on the hows, whys and what for‘s of EPD predictions and the role genomics testing plays in those predictions. Every calf has the genetic propensity to express a performance trait. However, expression of that trait is dependent not only on the presence of that trait but the environment that will impact the success or failure of its expression. Genomics testing provides the basis for a scientific best guess of how an individual will succeed (or fail) to meet life’s challenges. However, as a 50

selection tool, genomics does have some limitations. One example is the already mentioned impact of environment on gene expression. As the environment is not something that is inherent, genomics really defines the success (or failure) of that one individual, not his or her offspring. The most accurate interpretation of genomics testing results may come through the simultaneous calculation and application of EPDs. As genomics testing is driven by algorithms and mathematical models that arrive at a result, so too do EPDs, the difference being that the EPD models were developed to focus on the minimalization of variables that could impact interpretation of the genomic data (the environment is one excellent example). With EPDs, one individual can be compared to many others of similar age, sex, and under a variety of conditions, both good and bad, that could impact performance. This and its variants (predicted difference in dairy for example) have proven themselves over the years to be valuable tools in making progress, but EPDs also have their limitations. Chip Kemp points

SCIENCE out that by selecting for a few traits (such as yield and grade for example), which in recent years have driven EPD based animal evaluation, you can find oneself bleeding money trying to artificially compensate in management strategies (vet bills, culling, exaggerated herd turnover rates) that resulted because of the loss of other equally biologically valuable, but not necessarily obvious traits (bull and cow longevity in a cow/calf operation being one example) that are also linked to the bottom line. Kemp suggests that one trait selection

the name Promogen, to easily quantify the presence or absence of the Defensins in individuals. Over the last 10 years the Promogen test has been used to measure Defensins in colostrum, semen, uterine fluid, nasal mucus, ruminal and intestinal fluid, and saliva. Although these proteins function as natural antibiotics, continued research demonstrated that they did much more than fight infection. In a three-year study involving thousands of dairy cows of various breeds on farms both in the US and Europe, it was found that milk production, dis

can be done successfully if that one trait is named Profitability! The question becomes are their tools readily available to make one trait selection possible? The answer is yes, but what are these tools? In 2002, researchers at the University of Nebraska Medical Center isolated and characterized a series of proteins called Defensins produced by specific types of cells that make up the mammary gland, reproductive, respiratory, and digestive systems. That early research demonstrated that these proteins had strong antibacterial and antiviral activity, and in 2010, $100,000.00 was awarded to this project by the Gates Foundation to study them as treatments for enteric disease. One outcome of that work, was the development of a test, given

ease resistance, even behavior, were linked to elevated concentrations of Defensins in any of the fluids evaluated. The greater the concentration of Defensins, the better the biological performance as measured by productivity, fertility, and longevity. The ability to produce Defensins was found to be linked to maternal inheritance (hence the importance of cow families). This work was extended to include beef breeds in 2020, and not surprisingly, comparable results were reported. An individual’s Defensin concentration as reflected in the Promogen score is like a fingerprint; concentration (and activity) does not change with age; a calf at one month has the same concentration at three years; at six years and so on. Defensin concentration reflected

“High scoring Promogen individuals...are better able to succeed in the expression of all the traits we currently value in EPD calculation”

SCIENCE in the Promogen test score has been linked to a number of economically important performance traits in both beef and dairy cattle, but can we use these data to maximize the accuracy of our current genomics and EPD projections and does it make the goal of successful single trail selection for Profitability possible? The answer is...yes. High scoring Promogen evaluated cows have objectively and subjectively demonstrated a high degree of stress resistance; they perform well regardless of their environment. Physiologically the likelihood of genetically superior animals demonstrating that superiority increases when a key modifier, the environment is buffered against, which is the case in high scoring Promogen animals. By Promogen testing calves at a week or two post-partum, it becomes possible to identify those individuals who have what it takes physiologically to achieve the projections made about them by genomics. Of equal importance the single trait selection objective, Profitability, is no longer an objective that is just on everyone’s wish list. High scoring Promogen individuals, because of the accumulated positive net effect of maximal Defensin activity on “stress resistance”, 52

are better able to succeed in the expression of all the traits we currently value in the EPD calculation with the added benefit of beginning to recover those traits which got lost in our current selection process. The biology of what the Promogen research has uncovered as well as its other applications in animal management and health, is a work in progress. We are confident that today, Promogen is a valuable tool in modern and future beef and dairy production, which can only underscore that the single trait selection for Profitability in beef and dairy production is an achievable goal.

Immunologically superior animals are proven to return higher significant gains across all traits: overall wellness, fertility, and feed efficiency. Profits on overall wellness are realized through an increased response to vaccines and antiparasitic treatments, drastically reducing the incidence of morbidity and antibiotic use. Fertility is reflected in higher conception rates, reduced risk in early embryonic death, weaning calves at higher weight ratios, and overall retention and longevity in replacement females. Feed efficiency is directly affected by the body’s ability to ward off inflammation due to environmental stress factors. Cattle on feed who possess this natural ability have higher conversion rates than their counterparts who are immunologically inferior – all without commanding additional medicine costs and higher overall expenses. Immunologically superior animals who possess specific Defensen predictive biomarkers are proven to be more profitable, and aid in economic gains through these highly heritable traits for generations to follow.

Choose immunologically superior animals through Promogen Genetic Evaluation. Choose genetic gold.

Twenty Two for 2022 Mackenzie Johnston

Freelance Reporter/Rancher Brewster, Nebraska facebook.com/mackenzie.johnston2 by ABP & Mackenzie Johnston *We are big fans of Mackenzie and her daily “Cattle News Central” facebook posts. She‘s current on trends in the business and has a great attitude while reporting the ups and downs that ranchers deal with on a daily basis. Take a look for yourself and FOLLOW HER if you like what she has to say... We think you will! 1. Where do you live? On my family’s ranch near Brewster, NE. 2. Where are you from? I’m originally from Alliance, NE where my Dad started ranching with my grandad. 3. What do you do with your day? My day starts at 4:30 with a strong cup of coffee and an eight-mile run. I then take some time to scan the internet for breaking news before I head down to our main place to start the day with my Dad. Right now, we are busy feeding and working on fencing and corral building projects. Once the day is done on the ranch, I head back home, which is only two miles from our main place, and begin perusing the internet for noteworthy news to include in the next day’s Cattle News Central update. Between compiling the update and getting it recorded, I spend about three hours each day putting together the next day’s update. Then I usually spend the rest of my evening working on freelance articles. 4. We watch your daily posts to keep current. You’re definitely attracting more viewers each week, how do you feel about that? Cattle News Central has gained more viewers than I ever expected in such a short amount of time. To 70

retain current viewers and continue to attract new viewers, I make sure I keep my news reporting as current and relevant as possible. Throughout my day I scan sites such as Drovers, Cattle Range, National Beef Wire and Reuters Agriculture News to catch the top stories of the day. 5. What was your first job? My first job was driving the cake pickup for my Dad on our ranch in southwest South Dakota. I also remember that year I started driving a John Deere MT tractor raking hay. 6. How did you end up working for NCBA? I never worked directly for NCBA, I worked for one of their strongest affiliates, Nebraska Cattlemen’s Association. I started working for NC part-time in April of 2014 as a field representative in Central Nebraska. At that time, I was searching for a part-time job off the ranch as I have always been a people person and when the opportunity presented itself, I thought it would be a good way to broaden my horizons. February 2022

Twenty Two for 2022 7. How did that go? I worked for Nebraska Cattlemen for six years until March of 2020. In February of that year, Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue reopened America’s borders to Brazilian beef imports. I have always felt that importing beef from a crooked, corrupt country such as Brazil is bad for America’s cattle industry, so I took it upon myself to write an opinion editorial for Tri-State Livestock News concerning the matter. This opinion article stated the clear evidence of Brazil having far lower standards when it comes to beef production compared to domestic beef produced in the U.S. The piece also highlighted the fact that Foot and Mouth Disease is endemic in Brazil and if that would somehow find its way to the U.S., our industry would suffer greatly. After the article was published, I was abruptly fired from Nebraska Cattlemen. I was told that my position was terminated because the article did not align with the values of Nebraska Cattlemen or NCBA. 8. What do you think of NCBA these days? NCBA, our nation’s largest cattle organization claims to be a grassroots organization that represents cattle producers; however, their actions prove otherwise. Time and time again NCBA’s policies have benefitted the packers instead of cattle producers. A couple examples of this are NCBA adamantly opposing MCOOL and their voluntary approach to increase negotiated cash trade. I also believe that greed has gotten the best of the organization. NCBA received over $26 million checkoff dollars for fiscal year 2022. I understand that part of that will go towards education and research, but a large chunk of that will go towards NCBA salaries. Producers are required to pay into the checkoff, and for that money to go towards NCBA fat cat salaries is a complete disappointment. 9. What do you think about today’s cattle industry? The cattle industry is at a crossroads. If our industry can’t restore competition in our fed cattle sector by increasing negotiated cash cattle trade, we will go down the same path as the hog and chicken industries and become vertically integrated. The packers have their foot on the throat of cattle feed-

ers; through captive cattle supplies and alternative marketing agreements, they continually manipulate the market in their favor. Unfortunately, as an industry we are incredibly divided and can’t seem to find middle ground to fix this issue. Now, with inflation skyrocketing, I think it’s fair to call our industry ‘shaky’. Yes, our markets are darn good right now, but are cattle producers making that much more money considering how input costs have drastically increased over the last year? If we continue to see input costs rise, at some point producers won’t even be able to break even. At the end of the day, one can only make so many cuts to keep the wheels turning. 10. What do you think of Biden’s recent $1 billion proposal to ‘reduce meatpacker abuse’ and more ‘transparency for beef producers’? In theory it‘s a great plan, however I’ll believe it when I see it. We’ve seen numerous administrations make similar promises to improve our industry, not just this current one. None so far have followed through with their words. It seems as if Biden’s plan encompasses all that we want to hear, but we’ll be lucky if we see any action.

Twenty Two for 2022 11. What do you think of McCool? It would be incredibly beneficial for the industry to restore MCOOL, however I don’t see it happening. I believe the World Trade Organization (WTO) will do everything in their power to keep MCOOL at bay. Additionally, NCBA has always strongly opposed MCOOL and since they are the largest cattle organization in the nation, I see them being a major roadblock. With that being said, transparent labeling is not only what our cattle producers deserve, but also our domestic consumers. When consumers go to the meat counter, they should be able to differentiate between a piece of foreign beef and beef that was born, raised, and slaughtered in the U.S. Our domestic cattle producers produce the highest quality beef in the world and there is no reason that they shouldn’t be able to put a ‘Product of USA’ label on it. 12. Are there any organizations you support and why? When it comes down to it, I would be in the camp somewhere between United States Cattlemen’s Association and RCALF USA. I don’t wholeheartedly align with just one organization because there isn’t one that I completely agree with. I do think our cattle organizations often spend too much time dragging each other down when they should be focused on achieving the goals of their members. Additionally, we have some organizations that feel like you must be all in, agree with every stance of theirs, or you’re against them. This kind of mentality has gotten us to where we are in the industry, incredibly divided. Somewhere along the line we forgot that we could disagree and not consider each other enemies. 13. Real Beef vs. Beyond Meat The push for Beyond Meat is laughable. For so many years dieticians and nutritionists pushed wholesome, unprocessed foods, but now there is this push for a product that is fake, contains almost thirty ingredients and many of those ingredients can’t even be pronounced by a common individual. Despite the push for the fake product, Beyond Meat is a fad. At the end of the day, the nutritional benefits and the impeccable taste of beef can’t be replicated. 14. Meatpackers, Meatpackers, Meatpackers. They are narcissists rolling in the dough these days and beef 72

producers are making less money than ever. What are your thoughts? According to Cassie Fish who produces the daily Beef Read, on average, packers profited over $600/ hd. in 2021; they’re doing okay for themselves to say the least. It’s no secret that the packers have figured out a way to manage supply and work the market in their favor. I don’t think there‘s any doubt that the big four have partaken in illegal activity along the way, such as collusion to depress the cattle markets. However, at the end of the day, we need the packers. They’re an integral part of our industry and if we didn’t have them our industry wouldn’t be able to function like it does today. The cattle industry needs more competition in the packing sector and in a few years we will have that. We have regional plants coming online across the country, as well as smaller processing facilities that will also help the situation. 15. How can we save today’s cattle/beef industry? We must help ourselves to save the cattle industry. Many folks are waiting for government intervention to do the trick, but has the government ever gotten more involved in an industry and it resulted in a positive outcome? From what I know, the answer is a hard no. I agree that our industry has some major issues when it comes to transparency and fair markets, but producers need to find ways February 2022

Twenty Two for 2022 to be innovative, seek out new marketing tactics, possibly find a niche market. These changes aren’t easy, but our industry isn’t the same as it was back in the 1970s; we have to continue to evolve to stay competitive, sustainable and relevant. 16. What’s the most common question you get from ranchers these days? Either asking my opinion on current legislation or asking my thoughts which way the cattle market is heading. I’m in no way a market analyst, so I usually repeat what ShayLe Stewart with DTN Progressive Farmer has reported and help them the best I can. I live for questions regarding legislation since it is my true passion. I’ve always been interested in politics, so any inquiries regarding legislation impacting the cattle industry is right up my alley. As of late, the questions have mostly been about Senator Cory Booker’s recent legislation, Protecting America’s Meatpacking Workers Act of 2021, and the cattle industry compromise bill. 17. You had a health scare lately, how is that going? In the early part of January, I spent a day in the ER due to a viral infection that led to Bell’s palsy and a hemiplegic migraine that hit at the same time. The day it occurred I felt completely fine; I was backing a 4-wheeler out of our shop to take care of some chores and I was hit with deafening ringing in my ears. I attempted to step off the 4-wheeler and found that I had little to no control of my legs. Luckily, my folks were close by as we had just started the day feeding cattle. When they realized that I had very little control of my arms and legs and my speech was greatly impaired, they rushed me to the Broken Bow hospital, an hour away, as they were greatly concerned that I was having a stroke. The doctors in the ER discovered the virus and migraine. The two together were somewhat of a perfect storm that caused symptoms much like a stroke, but luckily that was not the case. Since then, I have recovered from the Bell’s palsy and I‘ll see a neurologist in the middle of February to figure out how to manage my migraines. 18. Where do you see yourself in 10 years? In ten years, I see myself still involved with production agriculture. My heart has always been in

ranching, being around cattle, but I also have an interest in feeding cattle, so I would like to expand our operation in that sense. I also see myself continuing to be a voice within the cattle industry. I plan to grow Cattle News Central into a news reporting company that features breaking news in the form of journalism and live updates. 19. What inspires you to do what you do? My daily motivation comes from the long line of ranchers that came before me. I am a fifth-generation rancher who is blessed to be able to work with my Dad each day. The sacrifices, the work, the losses that were incurred for me to be able to live this lifestyle and do the job I do is what gets me out of bed every day. The people in the cattle industry are salt of the earth and I do my best to help them by keeping them up to date on impactful issues. 20. Favorite hobby? Running. I‘ve run numerous ultra trail races (anything over marathon distance) across the U.S. 50 miles is my preferred distace and my favorite race is the Bighorn 52 miler hosted near Dayton, WY. I also enjoy crossword puzzles and live music when I can. 21. Favorite store? My favorite store is Lululemon. 22. Favorite music artist? Currently my favorite music artist is Morgan Wade.
