Welcome

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to this year’s Vineyard & Winery Show, brought to you by the team behind Vineyard Magazine.

After a record breaking summer, we hope your day will provide an ideal time to see friends, compare notes and plan the season ahead.

If you were able to join us last year, I hope you will agree that our second event is even busier, with literally something for everyone – whether you are a grower, producer, supplier or UK wine buyer. An amazing mix of 115 suppliers are exhibiting at this year’s show, who are on hand to provide advice and services on everything your vineyard or winery could possibly need.

We are very grateful to WineGB who are hosting our seminars. They have chosen a fantastic line up of speakers which I am sure you will find interesting and informative. Starting at 09:00 and running through until 17:00, topics include consumer behaviour, sustainable wineries and choosing the right varieties – as well as a topic looking after the next generation with a seminar at 11am providing advice on how to forge a career in this wonderful industry.

Thank you to all our producers who are taking part

in our display of 100 Top UK wines. Their continued high standard is the only reason why our industry is thriving and hence why we are able to come together with a show like this. Chosen by Matthew Jukes and WineGB our Top 100 have been selected to not only provide a cross section of variety of grape, but also wine style. Whether you are a producer wanting to benchmark your wine or a wine buyer, you won’t find a better selection anywhere else in the UK. Bravo to our producers who are in our Top 100, your wines are amazing and deserve huge praise.

Please let me end my welcome to you by saying we are indebted to our main sponsors because without their support it would not be possible to present you with such a special event – so thank you to: Berlin Packaging, Hutchinsons, Vitifruit, Royston Labels and new for this year Core Equipment, as well as our other event partners: Defined Wine, Urban Bar, Ferovinum, Rankin Brothers & Sons, Rainbow Professional, Protech Future, AG Recruitment and OnePay.

We hope you enjoy your visit to The Vineyard & Winery Show!

Heartbeat of the viticulture industry

It’s back – and promises to be bigger and better than ever! This year’s Vineyard & Winery Show will again feature great wines, unbeatable networking opportunities and a not-to-be-missed chance to catch up with what’s new in the industry.

With trade stands up by a remarkable 40% to an impressive 112, the Vineyard and Winery Show will once again reflect the heartbeat of the growing viticulture industry in the UK, as well as offering a chance to taste 100 expertly chosen wines.

The huge line up of exhibitors will again cater for the expected make-up of show visitors, with lots on offer both for established growers and those who are looking for the support they need before planting their first vines.

“At one of last year’s seminars, the speaker asked the audience how many of them had established vineyards, and half the hands in the room went up,” recalled

Jamie McGrorty, publisher of Vineyard Magazine, joint organiser of the show. “Then he asked how many were thinking about entering the industry – and the rest of the audience put their hands up.

“This year’s show will build on the success of last year’s event, which was the first ever, by bringing together a broad range of experts and suppliers who can help established growers improve their product but can also provide early days advice and support for those who are just starting out.”

It may only be year two for The Vineyard and Winery Show, but the event has already established itself as the must-visit event of the year for long-term growers and those who are hoping to join them in making the most

6 INTRODUCTION

NEXT YEAR'S SHOW 22nd November 2023

of the ideal conditions in England and Wales for growing grapes and making wines.

The 2021 event, described by Jamie as “unbelievably successful” saw the organisers run out of the special bags and tasting glasses provided to visitors within about three hours of the doors opening at 8.30am.

The seminars, with seats for 160 people, were all fully subscribed as an estimated 2,000 people attended the show, which – as this year – was organised by Vineyard magazine in association with WineGB and with the support of a generous line-up of sponsors.

Organisers are expecting this year’s event, which takes place at the Kent Event Centre, Detling, from 8.30am to 5pm, to smash last year’s attendance figure, with up to 3,000 expected to take the opportunity to hear from the experts, get the lowdown on industry innovations and chat with like-minded people.

The show will again be based around a central tasting area featuring no fewer than 100 of the country’s top wines. This year’s selection has been especially chosen to include all the grape varieties and styles available to UK growers.

“This has never been done before,” said Jamie. “The idea is that this complete cross section of styles and regions will educate and inspire producers, helping them to decide which varieties and styles to choose while at the same time benchmarking their current vintage.” The wines feature many medal winners from some of the best-known vineyards.

This year’s seminar programme, fully hosted this year by WineGB, once more offers an impressive range of speakers on a variety of relevant topics and is again likely to be ‘standing room only’ for latecomers.

“The beauty of the show is that it brings together a really good mix of people who can share ideas and provide inspiration for newcomers to the industry alongside detailed technical knowledge for those with more experience. Its success, demonstrated by last year’s attendance and the fact that this year’s trade stand allocation is sold out, highlights the huge potential the industry has here in the UK,” said Jamie.

Another feature of the 2021 show that is returning by popular demand is Matthew Jukes’ unmissable masterclass. The world-renowned wine writer and

Vineyard columnist will again be conducting a structured wine tasting starting at 1pm.

Over 100 people will enjoy sampling six wines selected by Matthew, who will explain why he feels each one is special and deserves a space on everyone’s wine rack. The six wines chosen are 21 Kin (Kinsbrook Vineyard), 2021 Vagabond Rosé (Yew Tree Vineyard), 2021 Penny Red (Halfpenny Green Wine Estate), 2015 Cuvée Boz (Sugrue South Downs), 2014 Blanc de Noirs (Wiston) and 2018 Blanc de Noirs (Gusbourne).

Matthew, who regularly lectures, judges, speaks at wine conferences and runs masterclass tastings for both corporate and private clients all over the world, is looking forward to this year’s show. “I absolutely love meeting winemakers and growers at The Vineyard & Winery Show” he said. "Last year’s event was an overwhelming success; it felt like the whole industry was there. I’m glad to be part of it again.”

Main sponsors for this year's Show are Berlin Packaging, Hutchinsons, Royston Labels, Vitifruit Equipment, and new for this year Core Equipment.

Other businesses supporting individual events include seminar sponsors Ferovinum, gift bag suppliers Rankin Bros, wine glass providers Urban Bar and Rainbow Professional, sponsors of Matthew Jukes' masterclass. Free coffee will be on offer throughout the day courtesy of OnePay and AG Recruitment.

This year will see the introduction of trade stand awards, with the winners receiving wines presented in a special six-bottle wine box created to promote the show by cardboard packaging experts W H Skinner.

Also new for this year is an after-show dinner jointly organised by Vineyard Magazine and WineGB. The Great British Wine Festival will give visitors and exhibitors a chance to catch up and relax after a busy show day.

Show sponsors

Long-established packaging company Berlin Packaging is another valued sponsor of The Vineyard Show taking place in November 2022.

Mark Crumpton, Berlin Packaging’s business development manager, said: “I thought the show was a real landmark event, having spent time at the larger winery and vineyard shows in the UK and abroad such as VITEFF in Epernay, SITEVI in France, Prowein in Germany and Vinitaly, the Vineyard & Winery Show captured

the sense of these shows and brought a real relevance to the UK industry as a whole and how it is maturing; you can really feel it is becoming a serious wine producing country.

"The talks, the tastings

impressed greatly, it was well attended by many of our established customers and gave a very good opportunity to speak and introduce our company to the next wave of winemakers and grape growers considering setting up in the UK. The venue was good, very open and safe and it was well organised and attended, really looking forward to attending this year with some more exciting new releases such as our carbon neutral glass bottle we showcased.”

Now one of the UK’s leading vineyard agronomy companies, Hutchinsons was keen to sign up as a sponsor of The Vineyard & Winery Show.

Hutchinsons’ Head of Marketing, Nick Rainsley, said: “The show was an extremely positive event. It was the first real opportunity we have had to showcase agronomy and technical services within a technically-based, industry-focused event.

“There are lots of small viticultural events but this was an opportunity to come together and provide real value for those within the industry. Everything under one roof from: land acquisition, preparation, establishment to production and marketing at the end of production.

“The atmosphere was great, positive. People were there to learn. So, it was educational but there was a real buzz. The calibre of visitors was excellent. There was a mix from ‘hobby vineyards’ to the larger, professionally established vineyards. All were there to learn and we did some business at the show,” said Nick. www.hlhltd.co.uk

Based in Royston near Cambridge, Royston Labels is a privately owned company, established in 1984, with a stateof-the-art production facility, a team of 80 full-time staff and a dedicated drinks label division.

Glyn Scriven, Head of Sales –Drinks at Royston Labels, said: “I thought the show was extremely well organised and perfect for the target audience. It was very well attended by both existing and new vineyards.

“There was a really

good atmosphere – I think a lot of visitors hadn’t visited a show for quite some time due to Covid-19, so the mood and atmosphere was very positive. The facilities were adequate, good.

”The calibre of

visitors was very good, from owners, new and existing winemakers – all interested in everything needed to run a successful business. We did and are doing business, with a lot of potential further down the road as new vineyards get to the stage when branding and packaging is required – many leads taken…

“Running a targeted show like this, well organised and promoted will always be successful, especially when associated with a successful growing industry,” said Glyn. www.roystonlabels.co.uk

Richard Witt of Vitifruit said: “The show was a resounding success both for us as exhibitors and our customers based on the feedback we received. There was a good, happy atmosphere from start to finish.

"The calibre of visitor was first class, wanting to access plenty of information. Although very little business is concluded on the day plenty of future

"The only real complaint was that the catering was not sufficient to cater for the large number of people with many customers passing comment.

We have great pleasure in presenting you with Matthew Jukes' top choices. We are also pleased to provide you with some of Matthew’s thoughts alongside each wine as published in Vineyard Magazine and on www.Matthewjukes.com

2015 Kit’s Co﬚

Blanc de Blancs

Chapel Down

Matthew says: It strikes me that the entire Kit’s Coty range is superb, but what sets this wine apart from the rest is that its balance, harmony and depth of flavour are all spectacular. If you consider the eye-catching packaging and the value for money, which at £40-ish quid looks pretty competitive these days, you have a truly compelling proposition.

NV Rosé Langham

Matthew says: Made using 6% red wine and 15% reserve wine, this is one of the most harmonious and silky rosé wines in the UK. The overall blend is 46% Pinot Noir, 18% Pinot Meunier and 36% Chardonnay, all taken from the Crawthorne Vineyard, and the base vintage is 2018. There is very much a 2018 juiciness about this wine which brings thrilling harmony and uncommon succulence. There is also a very low dosage here of 3 g/L.

2015 Blanc de Noirs, Limited Release Ridgeview

Matthew says: You will not be surprised to hear that this is another wine that aces expectations and delivers more than you could imagine in terms of succulence and luxury on the palate. Ridgeview has always been packed with ambition, and yet there comes a time when you can trust a winery’s new releases because their back catalogue is simply impeccable. From my point of view, this is one of the easiest and most rewarding ways to spend fifty quid while having complete confidence that you and your pals will be in raptures with the results.

2018 Vintage Brut Rosé Harrow & Hope

Matthew says: This vintage creation from Harrow & Hope is a remarkably strident wine. With a keen edge and a wild fruit theme, this is an artisanal number with enough grip and attitude to work with spicier dishes, serious sushi and even an indulgent goose rillette. I doubt there is a finer smoked salmon wine in the UK.

salmon wine in the UK.

NV Rosé

Candover Brook

Matthew says: The fruit for this beautiful wine comes from the Sainsbury family’s Preston Farm in Preston Candover, Hampshire. This is one of the most English, stunning, rosés I have tasted, and the super-smooth, incredibly pure fruit is mesmerising. I will forgive the clear glass bottle on this occasion, but they must go green with their next wine! I urge you to track down a bottle and raise a glass to this brave new label as soon as you possibly can – they have cracked the hardest style of sparkling wine at their very first attempt.

2020 Pinot Blanc

Penn Croſt

Matthew says: Made at contract winery Itasca, I have no problem declaring that this is the UK’s finest Pinot Blanc to date.

The fruit comes from the Missing Gate Vineyard in Essex, where it was hand-picked and whole bunch pressed into third fill Burgundy barrels. I was lucky enough to taste a bottle late last year, and it is as lively and energetic as any white wine you will taste.

It is nothing short of stunning, and it is certainly the epitome of brave winemaking.

NV Sparkling Rosé

Lyme Bay

Matthew says: Made using top quality Pinot Noir fruit from Crouch Valley and Martins Lane, both in Essex, this 100% Pinot Noir sparkler is dark, heady and rich. I would not hesitate in putting it in the main course arena, with game dishes and even steak. While the colour is a deep crimson, this is not a sparkling red either. What it is, though, is an example of a precise style of sparkling rosé, Lyme Bay’s style, and it is different, marked, brave and bold.

2020 Solaris Rowton

Matthew says: There is little mystery to the winemaking given it is stainless steel fermented and neatly dry at 2.5g/L, but its bravery is the reason everyone should track this delightful wine down because it celebrates the Solaris grape and manages to capture all of the traits of this variety perfectly. There is a clean, floral orchard-blossom nose here, which subsides into a lovely, satinsmooth mid-palate and a bright, green apple finish.

Cuvee Chérie Nyetimber

2021 Dry English Rosé Folc

Matthew says: Cherie Spriggs is the ultimate professional and there is clearly a no-compromise rule at Nyetimber. True to form, Cherie (Spriggs) is too modest to allow this wine to be named after her, although this is a delightful nod, and the accented spelling of Chérie, as we all know, means ‘sweetheart’ while also hinting at a dosageinfluenced wine. Oh, and a tasting note? There is no need because this is the finest demi-sec in the country and it kicks into touch virtually every Champagne demi-sec I can think of, too, because the balance between silky fruit and bracing acidity is spot on!

includes Pinot Gris, Bacchus, means ‘sweetheart’ while

Matthew says: This new release is enticing and more. The blend is mind-bendingly complex, using Pinots Noir and Meunier to make up 83% of the mix and Chardonnay a further 7%. But the remaining 10%, a seemingly small corner of the glass but a huge one in the manner in which it completes the picture, includes Pinot Gris, Bacchus, Rondo and Kerner. I have no doubt that this 10% makes this wine what it is –simply sublime.

2021 Bacchus Dry Camel Valley

a

Vineyards

Matthew says: I have followed this magnificent winery since it opened its doors back in 1989, and I have only ever tasted Camel Valley wines that make me smile. The new 2021 release is sensational. A pinpoint accurate nettle and elderflower theme features a line of citrus electricity down its spine that sparks your taste buds into action and never lets go.

sensational.

2018 Cossack Brut Vintage Danebury
Matthew says: Made from 95% Auxerrois Blanc, a cross between Gouais Blanc and Pinot Noir, a close cousin of Chardonnay, and 5% Rulander, or Pinot Gris, Cossack tastes like no other wine in the UK. It is sufficiently enticing on the front of the palate to draw you in while the finish snaps back and makes our taste buds stand to attention. It’s a thoroughbred if ever there was one. 15 VINEYARD & WINERY SHOW 2022

2021 Dancer in Pink Rosé Black Chalk

Matthew says: Made from three Pinots – 45% Noir, 39% Precoce and 16% Gris, the Precoce and Gris were co-fermented while the Noir was left to hang for longer than usual on the vine and then blended with the others before malolactic fermentation. The results are nothing short of mesmerising. Not only is the perfume sensational, bursting with hedgerow fruit and rose petals, and the palate is gossamer-smooth, but the finish is also equally thrilling.

Bone dry, crisp and palate scouring, this epic ending allows the fruit to billow and impress.

2020 Winemakers’ Collection Mary Rose Balfour

Matthew says: The Winemakers’ Collection wines from Balfour are limited-production, esoteric, no holds barred curios.

Sporting eye-catching, whimsical labels by Henry Hudson, is this statuesque rosé. I have never tasted anything like this rigid, upright and commanding wine.

MATTHEW JUKES TOP CHOICES

2021 Charmat Rosé Flint Vineyard

Super-dry, incredibly brittle and cleansing, and blessed with a refined rosehip and red cherry flavour, this is a connoisseur’s (or Pinotnerd’s) treat because there is so much to discover here.

I assure you I have not tasted a finer wine with steak tartare in years.

Matthew says: There is no doubt that Pinot leads the charge on the nose and palate in this spectacular, recently-released sparkler. Still, it is a genuine surprise to discover that the recipe is 25% Pinot Noir, 20% Rondo, 15% Solaris, 15% Reichensteiner, 15 % Bacchus and 10% Cabernet Cortis. Talk about complicated, but the imagination, effort, and blending skill here are worth it because the perfume and flavour are sublime and couldn’t come from anywhere else on earth. brittle rosehip there here. tasted a finer wine with steak tartare in years.

2019 Extra Brut Blanc de Noirs LDN CRU

Matthew says: Alex Hurley’s first traditional method release at LDN CRU is nothing short of a triumph. Only 1.3 tonnes of fruit were harvested, making this a somewhat collectable wine, given there are only 1,300 bottles in existence.

given there are only 1,300 that first urban winery and a

I was particularly struck by the exquisite perfume, layered, gentle fruit and surprising detail on the finish, and with only 4g/L residual sugar, it is a seriously dry and refreshing wine. It seems fitting that a wine of this beauty comes from the UK’s first urban winery and a listed Victorian warehouse in Fulham, no less.

17 VINEYARD & WINERY SHOW 2022

MATTHEW JUKES TOP CHOICES

2016 Blanc de Blancs

Raimes

2014 Blanc de Blancs

Ha﬙ ingley Valley

Matthew says: Once again, a small amount of the wine was fermented in old oak, and with five years on lees, this is a sensational treat. With 3 g/L dosage, it is racy and firm when you eventually reach the finish, but there is so much theatre to enjoy on the nose and palate it is incredible.

2019 White from Mereworth

Matthew says: Will Boscawen’s sparkling Chardonnay is resplendent in its chic livery, and the flavour lives up to its chest-thumping message. This is a luminous, luxurious and lively wine with a faint orchard blossom nose, a buoyant, silky mid-palate and a succulent, chalky finish that teases the taste buds sending you back for more.

Matthew says: Raimes is made from grapes sourced from the chalk hills of the South Downs, and it is partially barrel-fermented with an extended 42 months on lees. This is, without doubt, one of the freshest and most vibrant Chardonnay-based wines on the shelves right now. Champagne cannot come close to this degree of sophistication in this price bracket. I urge everyone who reads this to track down this wine – it is a sublime example of a top-flight English Blanc de Blancs. a blossom you back for more.

2021 Barons Lane White, Crouch Valley, England New Hall Wine Estate

Matthew says: Founded in 1969, this was one of the very first serious English wine labels, and in 2021 it received a crisp, new makeover that I find very pleasing to the eye.

I tasted the entire portfolio of new vintage still wines, and as it turned out, my chosen bottle is this bargainpriced, citrusy and pin-sharp Barons Lane White.

MATTHEW JUKES TOP CHOICES

Boco by House Coren

Matthew says: Made in the Charmat, or Prosecco method, from 42% Reichensteiner, 29% Chardonnay and 29% Pinot Noir, this is an elite Charmat at the top of this particular method’s tree!

I cannot finish this recommendation without mentioning the packaging – I think it wears one of the most eye-catching labels in the country.

2021 Pinot Blanc Oastbrook

Matthew says: This Pinot Blanc is nothing short of spellbinding, with smooth, luxurious and layered fruit notes. It is superbly weighted, long and honed, and while it is impactful and breathtakingly impressive, it cleverly stops short of being as pulpy and viscous as Alsatian versions of this grape.

2014 Sparkling Rosé All Angels

Matthew says: Not surprisingly, my tasting notes revolved around the layers of wild cherry, raspberry and hedgerow flavours that I find irresistible. Don’t fall into the trap of thinking that this is a wine for fruity puds – it is not. It is too dry and structured.

2014 Blanc de Blancs Co﬙onworth

Matthew says: Cottonworth owner Hugh Liddell has nailed the Blanc de Blancs model with this exquisite, chalky, bone dry Chardonnay taken from his best plots of land. This is a wine that rearranges your senses with its dramatic stance on the palate and is truly reminiscent of the finest wines from over the Channel.

21 VINEYARD & WINERY SHOW 2022

2021 Gravel Castle Chardonnay Simpsons

Matthew says: The Simpsons travelled down to the Languedoc two decades ago. When they brought their skills back to the UK, theirs was an estate to follow. Sure enough, the quality came quickly, and as every year passes, the bar is raised ever higher.

2021 The Mix-Up Vol 4, Mersea Island Vineyard Blackbook

Matthew says: This perfectly blended white wine is sheer heaven. Made from Müller-Thurgau and Reichensteiner, Sergio has brought the precision and delicacy of an elite Alto Adige number here but with less overt weight and more freshness on the finish. Interestingly, the florals and hints of stone fruit here point my senses to the Rhône or Languedoc, such is the elegance and restraint coupled with the long, dry, controlled finish.

NOTES

PEN-TO-SQUARE

2019 Meunier Hindleap

I am a huge fan of Gravel Castle, the lees aged, stainless steel fermented, ‘English Chablis’ and so it doesn’t matter where this inspirational couple travels; the French Connection is strong. Best of British! Languedoc, such is the elegance and restraint that but is reminiscent of the could

Matthew says: This is a thrilling wine and one that further underlines Bluebell Vineyard Estates winemaker Kevin Sutherland’s gossamersmooth handling of his precious grapes. This is a rather personal tasting note and one that might chime with some but leave others somewhat baffled, but I love the white pepper details on this wine. It is reminiscent of the perfume of a tip-top, dry Austrian Grüner Veltliner.

I, for one, could not put this glass down!

MATTHEW JUKES TOP CHOICES

2021 Penny Red Halfpenny Green Wine Estate

Matthew says: You can rely on Penny Red to maintain its price point, while continuing to augment its fabulous flavour. This wine is a siren song to on-trade buyers of all shapes and sizes, and it sings, ‘buy me, pour me by the glass, and watch while customers come back for more’. This is a winner: ripe, juicy, blackfruit soaked, seamless and, importantly, English, with its freshness, purity, subtle hedgerow nuances and crisp acidity. It even looks smart!

2021 Rosé, Yew Tree Vineyard Vagabond

Matthew says: As most summer-special 2021 Provençal rosés fade and die, this rosehip and rooibos-scented beauty is coming into its own with deeply rewarding red apple skin, raspberry and rhubarb stalk tanginess and a pithy, taut finish.

21 Kin Kinsbrook

Matthew says: 2021 was tricky for Joe Beckett and Rebecca Dancer at Kinsbrook. They felt the pressure and reacted like fighter pilots when their expected crop was too small to make their hallmark individual wines.

21 Kin was born, made from Bacchus, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir Précoce, this ‘diffusion line’ is a masterpiece in taking the most exemplary traits of each variety and piecing them together with deft precision.

2018 Blanc de Noirs

Gusbourne

Matthew says: Made from 100% Pinot Noir and using careful oak augmentation, this is one of our country’s most impressive young Blanc de Noirs. 2018 was a brilliant vintage, and Gusbourne further focussed the flavour of their grapes by crop-thinning by up to 50%. The wonderful flavour and succulence of fruit are abundantly evident in this sophisticated wine, and I used the word ‘indulgent’ in my notes, and few sparklers gain this descriptor. Once again, with global sparklers in mind, this is a stunningly priced wine for this level of acumen.

2015 Cuvée Boz Blanc de

Sugrue South Downs

Matthew says: Boz is an epic 100% Chardonnay creation, drawing on fruit from Jenkyn Place and keeping the recipe nice and lean with no oak interference whatsoever. The result is one of the most focused and attenuated Blanc deBlancs in the business. The lees ageing has given it enough mid-palate heft to grab onto, and it gained a mighty 18.5/20 score in my notes. This is the finest English Sparkling wine I have tasted, just eclipsing the previous incarnation of this wine based on the 2013 vintage. The current release is a 60% Chardonnay, 40% Pinot Noir blend based on the 2016 vintage and only 800 bottles remain in stock.

2014 Blanc de Noirs Wiston

Matthew says: I love it when serious English sparkling wines have a bit of age under their belts. There is nothing more frustrating than talking about a bottle of wine to one’s friends when you admit it would be better in a couple more years. Judicious fermentation in older oak barrels brings a discreet toastiness and a sense of luxury to the 66% Pinot Noir, 34% Pinot Meunier blend. This is a Blanc de Noirs that smells of glorious red fruit, too, which is often missing in lesser wines. Reaching its peak and mellowing beautifully on the finish, this is a small price to pay for a wine of this distinction. this

R&D trials are the basis for advancing crop protection

Powdery mildew, downy mildew and botrytis are diseases with which every vine grower will be familiar. Controlling them while preserving bunch yield and quality can be challenging. The capacity to investigate new and near-to-market products alongside the current standards is the focus of this year’s trials for the fruit team at Agrii, advisers and trials specialists to horticulture.

“Our research and development work considers every aspect of production. From establishment through to crop protection to managing grape sugar and acid levels,” said Emily Dimond, who alongside Benjamin Brown and Julian Searle provides specialist vines advice to growers across England.

“Many of our trials are run in co-operation with one of Britain’s biggest and most wellrespected vineyards. This long-term collaboration has considered every aspect of a commercial

> A commercial vineyard where Agrii delivers agronomy and management support

vineyard and enabled a sustained improvement in performance.

As a specialist in crop trials, Agrii works closely with crop protection manufacturers to generate the understanding needed to ensure advisers and growers have the knowledge they need to get the best from a product. This can involve knowing when and how best to apply it for maximum protection, what it can be safely partnered with to improve performance and where best to place it in a strategy to complement other forms of control.

“Our work on vine establishment, grape quality and disease control has been fundamental to helping our customers develop productive vineyards. In many cases this has supported the building of some of the best-known brands in the sector,” said Miss Dimond.

At Agrii’s Fruit iFarm, this season’s trials are focussed on fungicides for the control of the main

40 FEATURED EXHIBITOR

Ben own Em Dimo n d

grape diseases. The trials involve new forms of fungicides, including biorationals, such as botanicals, microbials and synthetics, and classic biological fungicides such as those containing live bacteria.

“We have separate trials investigating each disease with conventional treatments included for comparison. Some of the products in trial are new to the market while others are yet to receive authorisation. Early sight of new products gives us a head-start in positioning them in a programme,” said Miss Dimond.

Other work considers the contribution technology can make to improving crop production and promoting the sustainability of viticulture.

“Smart sensors have the potential to inform what

forms of crop protection to deploy, and when, for greatest benefit while reducing the volume of product applied. This would support a more sustainable industry and reduce the carbon footprint of viticulture,” said Miss Dimond.

Trials of all sorts are central to driving progress. For Agrii, they are the basis of a relationship with growers.

“Our trials team conducts detailed assessments at specific crop growth stages to measure disease severity, yield and bunch quality, with the support of laboratory analysis considering sugar and acid levels. We use this information to validate our advice and protect the prosperity of our customers,” said Miss Dimond.

Wide range of thoughtprovoking topics

WineGB’s Seminar programme at this year’s Vineyard & Winery Show offers wide range of thought-provoking topics, from business and marketing to viticulture and winery management. The aim of each session is to inform and update and appeal to both established industry members and those just making their first steps into the world grape growing and wine production in Britain.

The sessions will kick off with an insightful discussion on consumer behaviour in these challenging economic times, an important topic for many as they plan their sales and marketing strategies. The presentation will include speakers from a retail and on-trade perspective as well as a consumer research expert. The next session will look at some of the many career options available in the UK industry, led by Plumpton College.

Two different career paths in the industry will provide fascinating case studies, giving first-hand experience and useful insight. The Viticulture session will focus on the varietal options available in the industry today, with speakers discussing the merits of different varietal choices, and the Winemaking session will look at different sustainable options to winery design and practices from large and boutique producers’ perspectives.

The sessions will take several formats to include panel discussions, a debate, and peer-to-peer advice. There is a great line up of expert speakers and specialists in their fields. Each feature will include a Q&A session at the end, to encourage further discussion, and if visitors want to find out more afterwards, the WineGB stand will be located close by (Stand H12).

Evolution of new filling technology

Evolution BPS is excited to be bringing to The Vineyard and Winery Show the latest innovation from their partner MBF SpA. MBF, already world renowned for developing innovative bottling solutions for medium and large-sized wine and spirits producers, has extended its market to smaller wineries with the creation of the new Miniblock. These are monoblocs dedicated to the wine sector which include rinsers, fillers and cappers that do not exceed 3000 b/h and boast the same advanced technology that characterises the entire MBF range.

To offer a solution for wineries with lower annual production levels, MBF has created a compact, high performance machine combining ease of use with minimum maintenance.

These wineries now have a compact system at their disposal which is capable of respecting their wine as much as possible. With Miniblock, special attention is paid to minimising the increase in dissolved oxygen pick up and maintaining product integrity throughout the filling process.

The MBF Miniblock is equipped with a 316 stainless steel filling valve without a seal at the tip. Inert gas injection into the bottle before filling ensures maximum protection of the product from oxygen absorption.

The turret is equipped with a CIP system for sanitisation with the aid of dummy bottles.

At the capping phase, the Miniblock provides both the single-head capping turret for straight corks, equipped with hopper and channel for feeding caps with a centrifugal system aimed at minimising the formation of dust, and the single-head for screw caps (standard or StelvinLux), equipped with vibrating bowl including capsule level sensor and distribution of the caps at the mouth of the channel.

Different bottle formats can be accommodated with standard or adjustable stars, ensuring a quick and easy format change.

The Miniblock, with a solid construction in stainless steel, can also be equipped with a series of options designed to meet the different needs of customers. www.evolutionbps.co.uk

Soil certified vineyard shelter manufacturer to sponsor wine masterclass

A leading UK vineyard and tree protection supply company that is set to launch a ground-breaking new product has been named as the sponsor of the Matthew Jukes wine masterclass at this year’s Vineyard & Winery Show.

Rainbow Professional, which was formed in 1961 and specialises in using recycled and plant-based materials to create landscaping, forestry and vineyard products such as tree ties and shelters, has unveiled the first soil degradable certified biodegradable vine shelter.

While vine growers have little choice but to use shelters to protect newly planted vines from hungry rabbits, herbicides and mechanical weeding machines, they are generally made from plastic, an increasingly unwanted product in a well-kept vineyard and something that society in general is looking to phase out.

Rainbow Professional’s new product is the first to have been awarded Europe-wide soil degradable certification by the respected TUV organisation, allowing it to be used with confidence by growers who want to highlight their environmental credentials and reduce their reliance on plastic by using non-toxic and marine-safe protection.

The shelter, due to be in full production in time for the 2023 planting season, has all the attributes of a traditional polypropylene tube, including supporting a suitable microclimate for the growing vine, but is made from recycled bio-resin and PEFCcertified wood residue from UK sawmills, giving it an impressively low carbon footprint.

“Light transmission is excellent, we have carried out extensive trials that prove rabbits won’t eat it and it has all the advantages of a traditional shelter but with a natural look and feel,” explained Simon Place, sales director of Rainbow Professional.

“The shelters have a maximum life expectancy of five or six years before breaking down, and when

they are no longer needed they can be chipped by the mower in the alley and simply mulched back into the soil, where the resulting natural particles will degrade within two years. We believe this is a breakthrough that the industry will welcome, and we are delighted that it has been certified as soil degradable.” The shelters are also suitable for tree protection.

“We are delighted to be supporting the Vineyard & Winery Show and very excited to be associated with the masterclass being organised by someone with Matthew Jukes’ reputation,” added Simon.

Increasing processing capacity

Inka Pallets has introduced another shallow harvest palled box for vineyards, this time aimed at supporting wineries that rely on rotating forks rather than clamp attachments or box tippers for emptying grapes into their presses.

The new two-runner version follows the launch of its four feet PB1000-450C shallow plastic pallet box, a robust, stackable, pallet-sized container with an impressive 450-litre capacity and smooth internal surfaces that protect the quality of the grapes being transported.

The new model, which will be on display at this year’s Vineyard & Winery Show, offers the same benefits as the PB1000-450C, which saves on labour time, manual handling, transport costs and packaging waste while improving vehicle fill, increasing processing capacity and preserving fruit quality.

Inka Pallets’ UK sales manager James Tidman said the new two-runner base container would allow more wineries to enjoy the benefits and efficiencies of

switching to bins from crates without having to invest in expensive equipment or infrastructure.

Stacked safely up to four units high in a vehicle, without any additional need for single-use pallet wrap, the bins allow vineyards to increase the fill of each vehicle by more than 50%, taking it from eight tonnes of grapes per vehicle using crates to 12 tonnes of grapes per vehicle using Inka Pallets bins.

Inka supplied nearly 500 of its innovative boxes to leading vineyard Ridgeview, which was delighted with the performance of the bins. Estate manager Matt Strugnell commented: “They are working out really well. We’re extremely pleased with them, and we’re so glad we made the switch over.”

James Tidman added: “It was a privilege to work with Matt and his team on this project, and we’re delighted with the result they’ve enjoyed in their first harvest using our bins. I’m sure it will be the first of many, because although the boxes are delicate with the fruit, they’re also tough and durable.” www.inkapallets.co.uk

UK’s first Gregoire harvester

Kirkland is excited about this year’s Vineyard & Winery Show. Following last year’s big reveal of the impressive Antonio Carraro Tony V tractor, the company will this year be showcasing the UK’s first Gregoire harvester.

Never before seen in the UK, Gregoire machines are available as trailed or self-propelled harvesters which can also be equipped with front canopy management tools and multi-row sprayers. Making harvest quick and efficient, Gregoire harvesters suit all vineyard conditions, from 1.3m row widths on self-propelled models and 1.5m row widths on trailed versions.

Also on display will be some of Kirkland’s most popular Antonio Carraro tractors. Ranging from 26hp to 98hp, the tractors can come with a low-profile cab measuring just 1740mm high, making them especially suitable for use under low canopies and leafy foliage while ensuring complete protection in Cat. 4 spray cabs for driver comfort.

Certain models in the range are available with reverse drive, hydrostatic and CVT transmission, with the ultimate model being the Quad Track Mach 4. These tractors can be as narrow as 1060mm, making them perfect for travelling down tight rows.

Kirkland’s specialist vineyard machinery doesn’t

stop at harvesters and tractors but includes Orizzonti pruning and cultivating equipment, Giant multipurpose wheel loaders, Friuli sprayers, Corvus UTV’s and its own Kirkland and Orvin brands.

Kirkland strives to provide vineyards and growers with a complete package of quality products and solutions that answers all a vineyard’s machinery needs, including specialist builds. Skilled engineers can either alter an existing machine or fabricate something unique and tailored to an individual grower. www.kirklanduk.com

Helping growers make plant protection decisions

Landseer Ltd is a crop protection and horticultural advice company. With over 40 years of experience within the industry, our team are regarded as experts within the post-harvest sector and provide advice and solutions for a range of challenges. Landseer’s team consists of BASIS qualified members, researchers and qualified crop protection applicators.

One solution that Landseer provides is Trapview – a remote pest monitoring system that helps growers make plant protection decisions. It can provide a realtime situation overview (with photographic evidence of caught pests), forecast future pest situations and simulate different plant protection measure

scenarios. Trapview helps growers comply with the code requirement for: “evidence for the use of plant protection products”.

Landseer is working on two projects it believes will benefit the vine-growing industry. The first is developing non-destructive quality testing using near infra-red light (NIR) to detect fruit content (e.g. brix and acid), while its most recent project involves trialling a new, biological product. This fixes nitrogen from the air in the leaves of the vine, resulting in consistent, continuous nitrogen delivery to the plant.

Supporting the growing UK vineyard sector

The UK vineyard sector has seen incredible growth in recent years, with the hectarage likely to exceed 5,000 ha by 2025 as more growers expand production or venture into viticulture for the first time.

The trend looks likely to continue, given the country’s changing climate, although after the relatively kind 2022 growing season it can be easy to forget the UK remains on the margin of major grape producing regions. With weather events becoming more extreme, growers still face plenty of challenges, as shown by the late frosts in 2020, so we must ensure all production systems – large and small – are as resilient as possible.

This can be challenging, given the limited armoury of crop protection products available, tighter regulations, labour shortages and financial pressures created by rising costs, but Hutchinsons’ agronomists are here to help, offering a wealth of knowledge, experience and technical support to help manage the challenges and drive productivity and quality.

Hutchinsons offers bespoke agronomy advice, crop protection products and vineyard sundry items and equipment, plus novel solutions such as plant defence elicitors, bio-control products and cuttingedge digital services such as Omnia and TerraMap. Indeed, as sustainability, carbon footprinting

and soil health become increasingly important, so systems like TerraMap and Omnia come into their own. Omnia offers a range of disease forecasting models, while TerraMap allows growers to accurately highlight and manage the inherent variability across many soil parameters, allowing problem areas to be managed and inputs to be used more efficiently, benefitting productivity and the environment. Its carbon mapping functionality is another area that will gain importance as the political drive towards “net zero” filters down to individual growers.

Whether you’re new to the vineyard sector or an experienced grower, visit stand K47 at the Vineyard Show to discover how Hutchinsons can help your business.

Bespoke temperature control systems

JD Cooling Group is the UK’s leading independent supplier of bespoke temperature control systems.

The group is reducing its carbon footprint and working towards ‘net zero’ - reducing the greenhouse gas emissions that contribute towards global warming to zero by balancing the amount released into the atmosphere. This presents a significant challenge, with most of the group’s internal carbon being created by its team of on-the-road personnel. By focussing on reducing its direct impact, JD Cooling identifies and records ways to help reduce its customers’, and indeed the global, carbon footprint.

Achieving net zero will require significant changes across all sectors of the economy, and while there

are many barriers to this, there are countless improvements that can be made by ensuring green technologies are being used. Using renewable energy sources and minimising the energy consumption of existing systems has a positive impact on the environment.

Team JD offers turnkey solutions to many fresh produce sectors and, combined with its in-house design capability, can help reduce carbon footprints by employing greener cooling and heating solutions (heat recovery, heat pumps, combined energy schemes for example), optimising plant operation, maximising yield and, in turn, minimising energy costs.

Net-Zero refers to the target of reducing the greenhouse gas emissions that contribute towards global warming to zero by balancing the amount released into the atmosphere. Achieving Net-Zero will require significant changes across all sectors of the economy and one of the major changes in the agricultural sector will no doubt involve largescale investment and innovation which will be needed to provide technologically viable and economically competitive alternatives to fossil-fuel-intensive technologies in order to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases other than carbon dioxide.

Could your business benefit from custom cardboard packaging?

In Europe, more than 85% of all corrugated cardboard boxes are recycled. Each box contains 76% recovered material, on average, giving the corrugated industry the best recycling rate of all packaging materials.

Combined with its strength-to-weight ratio, printability and low cost, corrugated cardboard is the ideal material for packaging products and ensuring they reach the customer in excellent condition. Everyone knows paper-based materials are more sustainable than plastic, and it has become inherent in UK culture that excessive packaging is no longer acceptable.

Custom-designed cardboard packaging elevates the perception of the product and further reduces waste and the carbon footprint of the company involved. When packaging fits the product perfectly, there is no need for void fillers, which are generally not liked by customers and add cost to the process in terms of financial outlay and space in the packing area.

Custom-designed packaging also helps minimise breakages and customer complaints. Qualified designers will determine the correct level of protection for the product, based on years of experience. Furthermore, custom packaging looks fantastic, with the design – both structural and in terms of the print – able to be kept in line with company branding.

Visit WH Skinner’s website www.whskinner.co.uk for inspiration and to see how the company can help with packaging requirements.

Do point of sale displays work?

Without a doubt. Cardboard point-of-sale displays are a tried and tested, proven, marketing and sales tool used by both multinational companies and small businesses alike. Whether it’s to promote a new product, shift slow moving stock or maximise

sales, there is a type of cardboard display that will work effectively.

Counter top cardboard displays are ideal for smaller products, or as a product demonstration. Dump bins are fantastic to clear excess or fastmoving stock, particularly when tied in with quantity offers. Free or floor-standing display units are perfect for introducing new product ranges, where there are different product options per shelf.

Critically, the company’s branding and message are really important for maximum engagement and sales. Point of sale is a disrupter, designed to grab the attention of shoppers, so perhaps a better question to ask here is: which type of point-ofsale display is most effective for your product and brand?

Speak to WH Skinner’s sales team on 01622 749099 to discuss your requirements now. www.whskinner.co.uk

Partnership Agreements

A

firm handshake or agreed in writing?

Have you ever considered what would happen to your farm business if one of the partners died or was made bankrupt and you did not have a written partnership agreement in place? Legally speaking the Partnership Act 1890 would come into play, requiring all debts to be paid and borrowing returned to banks, with the residue being distributed between the remaining partners. If this isn’t what you had in mind, then read on…

In practice, in the absence of a written partnership agreement then as long as the remaining partners agree, a new partnership agreement can take over all the debts and assets of the old partnership so that a sale does not have to take place.

It’s better not to leave anything to chance. A written partnership agreement will reduce the risk of a dispute taking place as conversations about the tricky issues will have already taken place.

Another area that frequently causes a dispute is how the assets will be valued if the partnership agreement comes to an end, as there can be a significant difference between the book value of assets vs the open market value. Given the rise

in land and property values in recent years, it is important to get this right for the long-term success of the farm business.

Other points to include in a written agreement will be which assets are personally owned and which are business assets belonging to the partnership. Property which is owned by a farming partnership will be eligible for full Business Property Relief (BPR), but if it is owned personally and used by the partnership during the farming activities then only 50% BPR will be available. Agricultural property relief is only applicable to the assets used for agricultural purposes and at their agricultural value, which might not be the true market value.

Finally, it’s important to make sure all partners have Wills which are up to date and accurately reflect the partnership agreement. For example, if land and property is included in the partnership agreement then it cannot be gifted in a Will, although the interest in the partnership can be included.
