THAT OUGHT TO FOOL ’EM … Police pulled over a driver in Lincoln, Neb., and charged him with possession of marijuana they found in a container the guy had cleverly labeled “Not Weed.” WHERE DO YOU THINK YOU’RE GOING? ... A woman was arrested for shoplifting at a Kmart after she cut a security cable that was attached to a jewelry display case and loaded the whole case onto a shopping cart. She didn’t get far. WELL, I KNEW IT WASN’T MINE … Police pulled over a car in Georgetown, Texas, and the officer found a gun in the vehicle. The driver said it belonged to a friend, and his passenger said it belonged to the driver. A check of the serial number revealed that it belonged to the Austin Police Department from which it had been stolen.

BUT YOU DON’T HAVE ANY EVIDENCE … A couple grabbed a rotisserie chicken in a local Wal-Mart and then walked around the store eating it and drinking soda which they also had stolen. They were arrested. I SAID I QUIT, HONEY WHAT MAKES YOU THINK I DIDN’T? … After he had a heart attack, a man promised his wife that he would quit smoking. But he later succumbed to temptation, and snuck a smoke in the driveway of their home. He might have gotten away with it had not the Google Street View car came by and took a picture of him with a cloud of smoke billowing around his head. I JUST NEEDED TO COOL OFF … A man robbed a convenience store and soon found that the cops were in pursuit. Realizing the clothes he was wearing during the robbery would incriminate him, he threw his shirt out the window and his pants into the back seat. When arresting officers asked why he had stripped down to his underwear, he replied, “Because it’s hot out.”

Despite a recent blip in the stock market, portfolios have grown fatter

since Trump became president. An analysis in The Wall Street Journal predicts economic growth is likely to continue "for years." Other positives include updated trade deals with Mexico and Canada that will produce benefits for American manufacturers and workers far more than the old NAFTA deal ever did. Consumer confidence reached an 18-year high in September, according to Lynn Franco, director of Economic Indicators at The Conference Board, which conducts the Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index(R). Top this off with the successfully negotiated release of Pastor Andrew Brunson from a Turkish prison and a more realistic foreign policy in confronting America's enemies. According to Gallup's weekly tracking poll, for the week of Oct. 7, the president's approval rating jumped a percentage point, from 42 percent to 43 percent. His disapproval

(D-Texas). In view of Republican successes, including tax cuts and the booming economy, what Democratic policies would produce results better than these? Other than spite for the president, why would voters elect candidates who want to return to a past where things were far different? Do people who didn't have jobs during the previous administration want to embrace policies that kept them unemployed? Do businesses once prevented from hiring people because of regulations now wish to have regulations re-imposed and to lay off workers they recently hired? By what logic do some people wish to return to the recent past, including a recent past that includes Republican presidents who cannot lay claim to the type of successes President Trump is enjoying? Perhaps most amazing is the president's growing approval among African-American voters, whose votes he is openly campaigning for as evidenced by rapper Kanye West's endorsement and the president's reciprocal embrace. USA Today reported on a new Rasmussen poll that shows "approval rating among African Americans is at 36 percent, nearly double his support at this time last year." Despite the NAACP's hostility toward the president, African-American voters seem focused more on results than symbolism. Polls have been wrong in the past -- take the 2016 election as the latest example -- but the president has begun touting his record while campaigning for candidates. That record

ARIES (March 21-April 19): The good old days may not have been all that great. Touching base with a longlost friend may soon remind you why you fell out of touch. The surest way to get others to pitch in is to be enthusiastic this week. TAURUS (Apr. 20-May 20): A watched pot never boils. Be patient and find constructive ways to keep yourself occupied rather than feverishly awaiting important results. A family problem may consume more time than necessary this week.

ASTRO forecast Libra: Take things seriously

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Leave well enough alone this week. It may be better to allow a situation to go unresolved rather than to force a poorly conceived solution. You may find that is easier to get cooperation later in the week. It might be better to wait until then to implement changes at work.

Upon their arrival, the doctor said he had invented a new machine that would transfer a portion of the mother's labor pain to

the father. He asked if they were willing to try it out. They were both very much in favor of it. The doctor set the pain transfer to 10% for starters, explaining that even 10% was probably more pain than the father had ever experienced before. But as the labor progressed, the husband felt fine and asked the doctor to

The wife delivered a healthy baby with virtually no pain. She and her husband were ecstatic. When they got home, the mailman was dead on the porch.

CANCER (June 21-July 22): Turn the other cheek. Don't take a loved one's bad mood personally as the root of their troubles likely has nothing to do with you. Matters of the heart may be stuck in neutral as this week unfolds. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Make no assumptions. Unexpected events or someone changing their mind at the last second could throw your plans out of whack in the week ahead. Be sure to act like a professional when handling business matters. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Don't take anything for granted. Someone may not react to a situation as you expect so be sure to discuss your intentions before acting. Unnecessary suspicions may cause friction in the week ahead. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22.): Take things seriously. Making light of a bad situation to ease tensions may rub certain people the wrong way, so proceed with caution. The coming week may provide fertile ground for finances. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Don't spread yourself too thin. Others may try to guilt you into taking on tasks that will make their lives easier but only bring you added headaches. Keep your own bases covered .

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22Dec. 21): Good ideas are worthless if they merely stay in your head. Even if nothing comes of it, keep a written log of your thoughts for future reference. This week you may get a chance to be the leader. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22Jan. 19): Clean up the clutter. Keeping something around "for old time's sake" may simply be using up space that would be better occupied by something else. Your judgment may be better later in the week. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Don't overestimate your abilities. While you may think that you are being charming, someone else may find it annoying. Attempts to make a good impression may fail unless you are totally honest this week. PISCES (Feb. 19-Mar. 20): If it hasn't worked for you in the past, stop doing it. Making changes to your approach could make things easier for you in the long run. Have a little faith that things will work out for the best. IF THE WEEK OF OCTOBER 14 IS YOUR BIRTHDAY: Your job, business or finances could be of prime importance as the next two to three weeks unfold. Right now, you have the expertise and energy to execute shrewd strategies, but by the beginning of November your desire for material gain could interfere with other important personal activities. Although your ambitions are high this is not a good time to begin anything new.

DEHYDRATION IS A SIMPLE CONDITION to understand, but one that can lead to a host of complicated problems. Many people may be quick to associate dehy-

typically means his or her body has lost so much fluid that is has begun to lose its ability to function normally. Who is vulnerable to dehydration? Anyone can suffer from dehydration, which can be especially dangerous to young children and older adults. The Mayo Clinic notes that

WEEK OF OCTOBER 15, 2018 older adults, who naturally have a lower volume of water in their bodies, may not feel thirsty until they are already dehydrated, so it's important that aging men and women understand that thirst is not always the best indicator that they're becoming dehydrated. Babies may become dehydrated when they get sick with an illness that causes vomiting and diarrhea. But even pre-teens and teens and otherwise healthy adults can suffer from dehydration. What are the symptoms of dehydration? Symptoms of dehydration vary with age. Parents of babies and very young children should be on the lookout for signs of dehydrations, as infants and even toddlers may not be able to communicate that something is wrong. Signs of dehydration in infants and young children include dry mouth and tongue, a lack of tears when crying, sunken eyes and cheeks, and a sunken soft spot on the top of the skull. In addition, babies who produce no wet diapers for three hours may be suffering from dehydration. A sense of listlessness or irritability in infants and young children is another potential indicator of dehydration. Adults who experience extreme thirst may be suffering from dehydration. Less frequent urination and a darkcolored urine when going to the bathroom also is symptomatic of dehydration. Other indicators of dehydration are fatigue, dizziness and confusion. Not all of these symptoms may appear at the same time, but they are indicators.

Can dehydration be prevented? Dehydration can affect anyone, but there are ways to prevent it, even among those people who are especially susceptible to dehydration, such as children and older adults. Parents of babies who are vomiting or experiencing diarrhea should speak with their pediatricians and discuss the ways to prevent such children from becoming dehydrated. Breastfeeding more frequently and giving the baby a medicine such as Pedialyte® can prevent the occurrence of dehydration in babies who are sick. Adults who want to prevent dehydration should drink plenty of fluids and include lots of fruits and vegetables in their diets. Such foods contain lots of water and can help the body avoid becoming dehydrated. The Mayo Clinic recommends that athletes begin hydrating the day before engaging in strenuous exercise. A telltale sign of a wellhydrated body is clear and diluted urine. Athletes should replenish their fluids during exercise and continue doing so even after they finish working out or competing. Older adults should make a effort to drink more fluids when suffering from minor illnesses, which is when such men and women most commonly become dehydrated. Drink extra water when battling influenza, bronchitis or bladder infections, remembering that feelings of thirst surface only after the body has become dehydrated.

Boo! You’re Under Arrest!

OU KNOW WHAT'S SCARIER than a vampire who just ate a bag of pretzels? Some Halloween laws in Virginia. Below is a sample. In Chesapeake, children who are 12 or younger may trick-or-treat from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Oct. 31. City code states: "If any person over the age of 12 years shall engage in the activity commonly known as 'trick or treat' or any other activity of similar character or nature under any name whatsoever, he or she shall be guilty of a misdemeanor and shall be punished by a fine of not less than $25.00 nor more than $100.00 or by confinement in jail for not more than six months or both. "If any person shall engage in the activity commonly known as 'trick or treat' or any other activity of similar character or nature under any name whatsoever after 8:00 p.m., he or she shall be guilty of a misdemeanor and shall be punished by a fine of not less than $10.00 nor more than $100.00 or by confinement in jail for not more than 30 days or both." Six months in jail for "the activity commonly known as 'trick or treat'"? As if that were not bad enough, what's with the "commonly known as"? What is trick-or-treating uncommonly known as? Aggressive neighbor-asking? Doorbell assault? Candy-collecting in the third degree? The scariest costume that night should be a guy in a suit with a briefcase -- whoever wrote this law. If you needed any proof that regulations can sink into any crack of society, even the decision as to who gets candy when and how -- or who walks around the neighborhood -- voila. And all you need to get a provision like that passed is this simple mantra: "It's for safety." Anyway, Chesapeake makes Newport News look positively benign: "If any person beyond the seventh grade of school or over twelve (12) years of age shall engage in the activity commonly known as 'trick or treat' or any other activity of similar character or nature under any name whatsoever, such person shall be guilty of a Class 4 misdemeanor," which carries "a fine of not more than $250." Same rule in Norfolk. And in Suffolk, it is also against the law for anyone older than 12 to trick-or-treat. Finally, if you are 10 or 11 and want to trick-or-treat in York County, go ahead -- but not on your own! You "should be accompanied by an adult." These rules are turning a holiday that used to celebrate childhood independence -- out they went, on their own, in "grown-up" clothing to get to know their neighbors, to get brave by facing the dark, to get goodies by being bold and ringing doorbells -- into an orgy of adult supervision and anxiety. The time frame gets shorter as the regulations grow, all seemingly based on the idea that anyone who's 13 or older is a potential hooligan and anyone 12 or younger is a potential victim, and any semblance of fun must be thrown out faster than a slightly tampered-with Snickers bar. Holiday hint for 13-year-olds in Chesapeake: Trick-or-treat in an orange jumpsuit. That way, once you're booked, you won't have to change clothes.

Q: MY ORGANIZATION SEEMS to be increasingly paranoid. All my behavior is seen through the most negative lens. I find it exhausting to be doing things for good reasons and be perceived as "up to no good." Is this getting worse in companies and people, and how do you manage this problem at work? A: You can manage others assuming the worst about you if you can manage your own self-criticism. The problem really is not that society, the workplace and people are becoming more paranoid; the problem is the meaning we make about this reality. You are not wrong that we are increasingly a country where

PAGE 9

interpersonal edge Co-workers' behavior may be a reflection of how they feel about themselves

we all walk on eggshells about our behavior and word choices. The truth is no matter how many sensitivity training classes we take, others may be offended even by the way we say "Good morning." People who are determined to find offense will identify offense even if they have to make it up. The other truth is the perceptions of others are not a result of our intentions.

We may intend to be Mother Teresa in the workplace and still be experienced by others as a demon from hell. Believing others can see your pure and benevolent intentions is a recipe for corporate misery. Yes, we all find it hurtful when we try to help and people believe we mean to harm. Yes, it is normal to try to defend ourselves or explain our good intentions. However, none of us can go to work and avoid running into people that think we are "bad" sometimes. The real immunization is what we deeply believe about ourselves. On Monday, try observing the reactions of others as being only a reflection of their feelings about themselves. What would you learn about each of your co-workers? Is the one who accuses you of treating him as if he is stupid worried about his intelligence? Are you sure this is your treatment of him or his internal fears about himself?

Obviously others do have observations and suggestions about us that can improve our people skills, but repetitive assumptions people make about us are usually not about us. Consider how much data you'd gather about others if you stopped assuming that every reaction was your fault. Be empathic, be effective and be kind in the workplace, not because you can guarantee you will be seen as good but because it feels good for you to live in a world where this is who you are. You cannot count on others to applaud your benevolent intentions, but you can enjoy the experience of being the best version of yourself regardless of your circumstances. Q: My company makes it really hard for me to get promoted. I don’ want to spend my career years feeling nothing but stuck. I love my job but want to be successful. Should I just look for another job? A: No, business success is never about taking the fast or easy road. As Biz Stone, cofounder of Twitter observed, "Timing, perseverance and 10 years of trying will eventually make you look like an overnight success."

Emotional Affair Makes the Workplace Wobbly By Amy Dickinson

DEAR AMY: I have worked closely with a colleague since the beginning of our careers. We are both in our 30s and extremely close -- she was there for me during my divorce, I attended her wedding, our kids have met and we do "non-work" stuff together. She returned to work after a year off for maternity leave and something was different. We realized pretty quickly that we were actually in love with each other. Though I am single, she is still very much married. We have been dancing around the issue, and have toed the line but never broken into a physical affair. Ultimately, she has decided that in lieu of choosing between her husband and me, she is going to focus on her marriage. Regardless of whether this love between us was mutual or one-way, we still work very closely together. Do you have anything to offer as to how I should deal with working so closely with someone I very much want but cannot have? -- Work is Tough Enough DEAR ENOUGH: Your characterization of her as focusing on her marriage "in lieu of choosing" between you and her husband sounds like a red herring. You should assume that she has actually made this choice, and she is choosing him, and her family, over the personal destruction this affair could cause. This is a very tough situation, but people do survive from emotional love affairs. It is not easy to roll back this sort of intimacy, but it will get easier with time. You have a large emotional gap to fill. You have to "behave" your way out of this, and your feelings will follow. For now, you and she should not communicate outside of work. Talking with her about your mutual feelings reinforces the emotional intimacy. If working together is triggering too much emotion or sadness for you, you should pursue different assignments, which will take you into other professional and personal realms. You need to build up a life that is separate from this person. You should force yourself to meet new people. Get out there. Take up a new activity outside of work. Give other women the opportunity to get to know you. DEAR AMY: My wife has a friend, "Donna." They've been close since college. Donna is high maintenance and selfish, but I've always been nice to her, and have no trouble interacting with her. I do not like the way Donna treats my wife. She is demanding, completely self-centered and domineering. My wife works full time. We have two children. Donna works from home and is single. Everything is based around Donna's scheduling, and if my wife objects, Donna flips out. My wife has cried many times over something hurtful Donna has said to her. When my wife doesn't go along with Donna, she tends to cancel all future plans, ignore all communication and wait for my wife to come crawling back, which she always does. My wife is planning a group trip for my 40th birthday. I've asked her not to include Donna on the invite list. She is very concerned about how Donna will react and what this might do to their friendship. How do I get my wife out of this cycle? How can I make her see that this relationship is bad for her? -- Worried Husband DEAR HUSBAND: You should not feel obliged to invite your wife's bully to join you on your 40th birthday trip. Hold firm on that. Otherwise, you should determine not to give this relationship any attention at all. You will not get your wife out of this cycle, because you are a small part of it: "Donna" bullies your wife. She cries to you. You react either with sympathy or annoyance. You two discuss Donna at length. This relieves some of the pressure. Time passes, and the cycle begins again. Your wife is going to have to determine for herself that she is sick of being bullied and burned.

THE GREEN SHEET STARTING THIS WEEK: ANT-MAN AND THE WASP: He may be small in size, but Ant-Man is big on entertainment -- as proven by this sequel, actually more enjoyable than the first film in certain ways. Though it lets the Marvel Universe take a breath from the relentless action of most other movies in the franchise, there's sufficient mayhem in the Marvel tradition, but also a very welcome and quite substantial dose of humor. Paul Rudd is back as a star and co-writer as AntMan's latest mission involves something else of changeable size ... a whole building, namely the lab of scientist Hank Pym - again played by Michael Douglas. Bad guys want that lab, and also involved in making sure they don't get it is Pym's daughter, who becomes the new Wasp as played by Evangeline Lilly. Michelle Pfeiffer plays her mother, the original Wasp.

WHITNEY: With the approval of the late music superstar's estate, director Kevin Macdonald delves into Whitney Houston's mystique through rare audio and video clips and new interviews. Expectedly, the content follows her road to becoming one of the most successful and legendary female performers in music history. The film also follows Houston's move into movies, but it also examines her tumultuous personal life. Her relationships with husband and fellow music star Bobby Brown and daughter Bobbi Kristina are examined, as is the tragic and very premature end of Houston's life.

ELVIS PRESLEY: THE SEARCHER: This extensive documentary recalls the rise of one of the ultimate icons in American history. Through fresh interviews with many people who were associated with him -- including ex-wife Priscilla, close friend Red West and such peers and admirers as Bruce Springsteen and Tom Petty -- the path taken by Presley is traced from his early days with Sun Records through his sometimes controversial television appearances and into the 1960s, when his music and movies combined to make him a legend destined to endure to this day and beyond.

Prayer To The Blessed Virgin (Never Known to Fail)

Oh, most beautiful flower of Mt. Carmel, fruitful vine, splendor of Heaven, Blessed Mother of the son of God. Immaculate Virgin assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me, herein you are my Mother, Oh, Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and earth! I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succor me in this necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my Mother. Oh Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse in thee (3x). Holy Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3x). Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goal. You who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me that in all instances in my life you are with me. I want in this short prayer to thank you for all the things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. Ghostly

ENCOUNTERS The House I AM A CLAIRVOYANT and am used to not being alone. The last house I lived in had a number of distinctive entities and I will only share a couple of my experiences with you now. There was a young girl, probably around 4 or 5 who was very prevalent around the time my son was three. One night I had a contact dream, - usually my dreams are surreal and nonsense, but when I contact someone they are usually set in whatever house I am in and are more of out of body experiences. I walked to the end of my hall and looked through the dining room into the kitchen, and there was a small girl with waist length dark brown wavy hair, she had a flowered white nightgown on and she was pushing buttons on the microwave. When I asked her why she was here she quickly came up to me. I crouched down but I couldn't see her face, and somehow I knew she had been badly injured - think gunshot wound to the eyes and cheek- so I didn't want to see her face. I explained to her that she needed to move on and go into the light where her family was waiting and then I walked back to my room with her following behind me. I woke up then went back to sleep and a while later my son woke me up - halfway anyways... enough to answer him and kind of remember - and he asked me to tell the girl she was NOT his sister and to leave him ALONE! I told him to lay down in my bed and explained to her - she was about three feet away - that I was not her mother and she needed to move on that it wasn't her house anymore. I thought that part was a dream when I woke up until I realized my son was asleep beside me. The other VERY noticeable energy in my house was that of a woman who was very straight laced and controlling. She would often sit on a window seat in my bedroom at night. My husband, who is a very skeptical man, would sit up in his sleep staring with closed eyes toward her and ask over and over, "Who is that, who the hell is that?" until I would tell him it's ok then he would lay back down. Well, this house was in Oklahoma and every time there was tornado weather outside she would panic and really become agitated and very distracting to those who could sense her so I'd have to calm her down and watch the storm. When my alarm clock didn't go off she would bang loudly on the window in time for me to get to work. But when we were moving out she really flipped stirring up whatever else was there. So, in the middle of the night I would hear floor shaking and bangs from completely empty rooms, tape would be peeled off boxes and placed across the room, things would be removed from boxes overnight and put in different rooms - like books stacked in the middle of the kitchen after they were packed - and sounds of the TV coming on after it had been unplugged and wrapped in protective sheeting. All in all it was NOT a very fun move especially when I was alone the last four weeks of packing and she kept opening the valve on my air mattress at 2 am. My new house is nice but I keep hearing a little boy talk to me from a corner of my bedroom. Oh well. ©theshadowlands.net

FUN SLIDES SKATE PARK in Ross Township, is a 33,000 sq. ft. building in the Pines Plaza that serves as the ultimate place for children ages 3 and up. This fluorescent paradise is filled with carpeted ramps and jumps that allow skaters to glide around while testing their ability on their Fun Slides. The invention of the Fun Slide Carpet Skates stemmed from the ez Moves Furniture Slides, a family owned and operated business. Owner, Wes Chastain first started working for Fun Slides when it opened five years ago. From Florida, Wes was visiting Pittsburgh for the first time to watch his Florida State Seminoles play the Pitt Panthers. He fell in love with the city and began looking for a job. Once he found the opening at Fun Slides, he packed his things and moved from Florida to Pittsburgh. He worked as a General Manager and genuinely enjoyed what he was doing. When he was approached last year about buying the business, Wes did not hesitate. May 1st, he took ownership and hasn't looked back. Skating at Fun Slides has been a huge hit with kids. Whether you are a novice skater or a pro, Fun Sliding is a safer alternative to extreme sports for any experience level. Fun Slides Carpet Skatepark has been known as one of the best places in the Pittsburgh area to have your child’s birthday party. Parents can easily book customized parties online in minutes. On Tuesday evenings from 6:30pm - 7:30pm, Fun Slides opens their doors to REFIT Fitness/Dance class. This is an exercise class that resembles Zumba in some ways. With the black lights and cool ambience, everyone can feel the adrenaline when taking this class. Just show up and pay the nominal class fee! Are you a fan of Harry Potter? On October 26, Fun Slides will host a Harry Potter themed party and they expect you to feel as if you were in Hogwarts. Kids can play Quidditch and there will be the famous butter beer being served. The Halloween Season There’s No Better Time

TO VISIT THE SPOOKIEST PLACES AROUND THE WORLD VARIOUS PLACES AROUND THE WORLD are home to spooky tales and locations that are purported to be visited by spirits. Paranormal activity attracts visitors excited by the opportunity to catch a glimpse of the unknown and the unexpected. Ghosts and hauntings simultaneously frighten and excite. While many people grow up listening to ghost stories and scary tales, few take to the road to witness potentially haunted sites. A haunted Halloween road trip can help fuel ghostly interests. Here are a few places to include on your journey. Banff Springs Hotel: This hotel in Alberta, Canada, was built more than 125 years ago as a luxury stop for train travelers. It's rumored to be one of the most haunted places in Canada. One of the most popular of all the haunting reports involves former bellman Sam McCauley. McCauley served at the hotel during the 1960s and 1970s, and some people insist they still see him to this day. He likes to help guests up to their rooms, dressed in his 1960s uniform, often turning on lights and opening locked doors. If you try to tip or make conversation with Sam, he vanishes. The Crescent Hotel: Located in Eureka Springs, Arkansas, the Crescent Hotel is often referred to as the most haunted hotel in America. The property is said to be haunted by several spirits, including a young woman who died after falling from the roof. Edinburgh Castle: A site of many bloody battles that overlooks what many people say is the most haunted city on Earth, Edinburgh Castle keeps tourists guessing with many paranormal activities. The most common is the feeling of being touched and pulled and visions of apparitions. Fort Mifflin: Fort Mifflin is America's only Revolutionary War battlefield that is still intact. Located in Philadelphia, the 14 restored buildings supposedly house plenty of spirits from the past. A screaming woman is often heard, and she is so loud that the police have been called to investigate. Monte Cristo Homestead: Located in Junee, New South Wales, Monte Cristo Homestead is considered to be the most haunted place in Australia. Tragic events, including many deaths, have occurred on the homestead since it was first constructed. Moundsville Penitentiary: Moundsville Penitentiary was one of America's most violent correctional facilities and the final stop for almost 1,000 criminals. Many people died at the West Virginia facility. While the prison closed in 1995, some say that tortured spirits can be seen and heard on prison tours. Tower of London: There have been many reports of paranormal activity at the Tower of London. Anne Boleyn, whose tragic marriage to King Henry VIII ended when she was beheaded, is said to be seen walking the tower's corridors near the spot of her death. UAA's Wendy Williamson Auditorium: The Wendy Williamson Auditorium in Anchorage, Alaska, has its share of unexplained phenomena. Footsteps and voices are frequently heard. Many people insist they have witnessed poltergeist activity on the property as well.

Weston State Hospital: This West Virginia facility was renamed after first being known as the TransAllegheny Lunatic Asylum. Opening in 1864, the hospital became home to thousands of people with mental illnesses. Hundreds of people are said to have died here, and spirits may date back to the Civil War era. LaLaurie Mansion, New Orleans, La.: Marie Delphine LaLaurie was a Louisiana socialite who threw lavish parties. But she also had a dark and grisly side. When a fire broke out in the residence, police responded and discovered mutilated slaves in the attic. LaLaurie fled New Orleans, but it is believed the phantom screams of her victims can still be heard at night. Eastern State Penitentiary, Philadelphia, Pa.: This once strict enforcer of solitary confinement was built in 1829 and housed prisoners until 1970. Peals of disembodied laughter, pacing footsteps and shadowy figures have been reported on the premises.

Taking a Look at

SOME HALLOWEEN SUPERSTITIONS HALLOWEEN IS STEEPED IN TRADITION. Halloween season also is a time of year when superstitions take root and add to the spooky and often silly nature of the holiday. Some Halloween traditions can be traced back to the ancient Celts and their belief that spirits of the deceased were able to wander the

First Annual

earth during the time they called Samhain. Costumes were worn so the living could blend in with ghosts, and treats were laid out to appease the spirits. The following are some common superstitions to consider as October 31 draws near. · Some believe that bats flying around a house on Halloween - either indoors or outside - is a sign that spirits lurk nearby. · Black cats have long been thought to be companions of witches or "familiars," demonic animals gifted to them. While some think it's bad luck for a black cat to cross your path, in Ireland, Scotland and England, black cats symbolize good luck.

· One Halloween superstition states that if you walk around your home backward three times and then counterclockwise three times before the sun sets on Halloween, you will ward off nearby evil spirits. · Apples can help people determine if they will live long lives. On Halloween night, you have to make an unbroken apple peel, which will estimate how long you will live. The longer the peel is, the longer you'll live. · Another superstition suggests that if you spot a spider on Halloween, the spirit of a deceased loved one is watching over you. · It is said that no person should lie in a coffin while alive, even for fun. Otherwise, he or she is inviting death. Also, no item of clothing belonging to a living person should ever be put on a corpse when it is placed in a coffin, for as it rots in the grave so will the rightful owner's health begin to decline. · Children who are born on Halloween are said to have the gift of second sight, which may also include the power to ward off evil spirits. · People have been warned not to turn around on Halloween night if they hear footsteps behind them, as this could mean Death is following. · There is a superstition that when you pass a graveyard or house where someone has died, you should turn your pockets inside out to make sure you don't bring home a ghost in your pocket. · Jack-o'-lanterns light up Halloween nights. Jack-o'-lanterns were originally made out of hollowed-out turnips, but pumpkins replaced the turnips when the Irish emigrated to North America. Jack-o'lanterns were used to guide lost souls and keep evil spirits at bay. · Trick-Or-Treating in Costumes - In olden times, it was believed that during Samhain, the veil between our world and the spirit world was thinnest, and that the ghosts of the deceased could mingle with the living. The superstition was that the visiting ghosts could disguise themselves in human form, such as a beggar, and knock on your door during Samhain asking for money or food. If you turned them away empty-handed, you risked receiving the wrath of the spirit and being cursed or haunted. Another Celtic myth was that dressing up as a ghoul would fool the evil spirits into thinking that you were one of them so that they would not try to take your soul. In the U.S., trick-or-treating became a customary Halloween tradition around the late 1950s.

HALLOWEEN HORROR FILMS HALLOWEEN IS AN EXCITING TIME of the year, particularly for horror fans who embrace the ghoulish and ghastly. Halloween hijinks and costumes may be one way to keep things scary. The array of horror films slated for release also can raise hackles and ensure sleepless nights to come. Here are a few sneak peeks at some of the latest entries into the horror film genre. · "Along Came the Devil": The soul of a girl named Sweeney provides easy access for the Devil when she accidentally invites demonic forces into her life. Her loved ones are called upon to help save her soul. · "Elizabeth Harvest": Elizabeth moves into the home of her wealthy new husband Henry. She has freedom to move throughout the entire house, with the exception of one locked room. Elizabeth snoops around when Henry is away on business and enters the forbidden room, with notable consequences. · "The Little Stranger": A country doctor is called to a dilapidated home to help one of the children living there. But the doctor's own secrets and past are soon revealed, and the haunting begins. · "Mandy": A happy couple living in a remote location finds their situation turns on its head when the wife is abducted by a crazy cult. Nicolas Cage stars and must rage to get his kidnapped wife home safely. · "Apostle": A man infiltrates a religious cult in 1905 to rescue his sister. The cult's charismatic leader suspects a traitor, and dark and evil secrets are revealed. · "Halloween": This movie serves as the direct sequel to the original movie made 40 years ago. Michael Myers has been in jail since his killing spree, and adversary Laurie Strode is still coping with the trauma Micheal caused. Michael returns to Haddonfield and new horrors ensue. · "The Clovehitch Killer": A teenage boy suspects that his own father is a serial killer terrorizing their small town. What will become of his discovery?

· "Sleepy Hollow": It's not stated explicitly that this movie takes place on Halloween -- probably because Halloween wasn't celebrated much in 1799 -- but jack-o-lanterns are seen throughout, and the Headless Horseman tale, told with delicious dry wit by Tim Burton, has become synonymous with the October holiday. · "The Fog": The film opens on John Houseman‘s grizzled Mr. Machen spinning a campfire yarn about the local legend of a wrecked ship, the Elizabeth Dane, which washed up on the rocky shores of Antonio Bay 100 years ago, dragging the ship’s crew to the bottom of the sea. On the town Centennial, the sinister truth about the Elizabeth Dane emerges along with the souls of its crewmen, and a neon blue fog rolls into town with some pirate ghosts in tow.

· "The Shining": Stanley Kubrick's adaptation of Stephen King's bestseller generates terror from its meticulous filmmaking. And, courtesy of Jack Nicholson's turn as a murderous paterfamilias, it also features the most memorable horror-movie performance in the past few decades. · "The Others": Alejandro Amenábar wrote and directed this gothic horror film starring Nicole Kidman as the tightly wound mother of two sickly children who cannot tolerate the sunlight. When three new servants arrive at their estate, supernatural activity begins in their dark and dreary home. With the children seeing ghosts and the mother slowly losing her mind, the tension builds and culminates in a surprising twist ending.

After conjuring a towering demon to do his dirty work, Harley experiences remorse as Pumpkinhead kills again and again. · "Friday the 13th": Another horror classic, this film follows a group of teenagers who are attempting to reopen an abandoned campground. One by one each teen is murdered by a mysterious killer, who ultimately turns out to be Jason Voorhees, who drowned at the campground as a boy years earlier. · "Hellraiser": A simple puzzle box serves as the catalyst for this classic from horror master Clive Barker, making his directorial debut with this tale focusing on a zombie being pursued by angry demons. · "Frankenstein": Film buffs who want something scary and historic this Halloween can opt for this nearly century-old adaptation of Mary Shelley's tale of an obsessed scientist who creates a monster from the body parts of various exhumed corpses. · "Children of the Corn": Based on a short story from horror fiction legend Stephen King, this film focuses on a couple's relocation to a rural Nebraska town. Upon their arrival, they begin to suspect something is amiss, ultimately learning a religious cult of children is terrorizing the town.

Halloween Boasts

AN INTERESTING AND RICH HISTORY COSTUME-CLAD KIDS, bags of candy and jack-o'-lanterns are some indelible images associated with Halloween. Those images may forever be linked to this beloved, fun-filled holiday, which boasts a rich history that varies depending on where in the world you might be. Celebrations around the world may not mirror those in the United States, where trick-or-treating youngsters travel from house to house in search of candy. But true Halloween enthusiasts may be interested to learn the history of the holiday and how it has changed over the centuries. El Dia de los Muertos: In parts of Mexico and Latin America, El Dia de los Muertos (The Day of the Dead) is celebrated each year in

early November. The day is designed to honor the dead, who Day of the Dead celebrants believe return to their earthly homes each Halloween. Families may burn candles and incense in an effort to help their deceased relatives and ancestors find their way home. Guy Fawkes Day: For many years, England had reason to celebrate around October 31, but those celebrations did not mirror the Halloween festivities familiar to those across the pond. While recent years have witnessed more and more Brits adopting the Americanized celebration of Halloween, for many the true holiday this time of year will always be Guy Fawkes Day. Celebrated on November 5, Guy Fawkes Day is a commemoration of the foiled Gunpowder Plot. Smithsonian notes that this was a failed attempt by disgruntled Catholics to blow up the British Parliament building while King James I was inside. Fireworks, parades and bonfires marked Guy Fawkes Day celebrations, which in recent years have gradually begun to transform into something that more closely resembles American Halloween.

Samhain: History.com notes that Halloween can trace its origins to Ireland. But those origins did not involve giggling youngsters carrying plastic pumpkins around in search of candy. Halloween's origins can be traced to the Celtic festival of Samhain. Samhain was considered the Celtic New Year and was sacred to the ancient Irish. The festival was celebrated as the days became shorter, and offerings were left for the dead, who celebrants believed could cross over into the land of the living at this time. However, they also believed demonic spirits could follow such a path during Samhain, giving the festival the taste of the macabre that many still enjoy imparting on their Halloween celebrations today. Halloween is celebrated in many different countries. In addition to the United States and Canada, areas of Europe, Asia and Latin America have their own Halloween celebrations. Halloween is a huge celebration here in the United States and it certainly has a rich and interesting history that gals and ghouls from all walks of life might find interesting.

THE JACK-O-LANTERN is one of the most popular and symbolic token of Halloween celebration. Well, just like all other activities, the famous pumpkin lantern has a story too. The Jack-O-Lantern tradition in fact emerges from an Irish myth about a lazy yet cunning man named Stingy Jack. According to the story, Stingy Jack came across the devil in a pub whereby he invited him to have a drink. Stingy in nature, he convinced the devil to turn himself into a six pence coin in order to buy the drinks in exchange of his soul. Once the devil changed his form, Jack kept the coin into his pocket next to a silver cross thus preventing the devil to change back to his original form. He was freed only after promising not to claim his soul for the next 10 years. Ten years later, the devil came back to claim Jack’s soul but again he tricked the devil by asking him to first get him an apple from a tree. As soon as the devil was up on the tree, Jack carved the sign of a cross into the tree’s bark hence the devil unable to come down until he promised Jack never to claim his soul. I Years later, when Jack died he went to Heaven where he was denied a place. He then proceeded towards Hell but the devil bound to his word could not allow him in. So he had nowhere to go except to wander and since it was really dark outside, the devil tossed Jack a burning coal from the flames of Hell in order to light his way. Jack put the coal into a carved-out turnip and has been roaming the earth ever since. The Irish refer to this ghostly figure as ‘Jack of the Lantern’ or simply ‘Jack O’Lantern. The Irish people believed that spirits and ghosts could enter their world on Halloween. Hence, they carved scary faces into turnips or potatoes and placed them near windows or doors to keep Stingy Jack and other wandering spirits away. Later, immigrants discovered pumpkins, a fruit native to America, and it was easier and bigger to carve out and make perfect Jack-O-Lanterns. That’s one of the most famous legends of Jack O Lantern but there are many others which derive from this one based on different countries and culture which celebrate Halloween nowadays. Some common differences are mostly about who the Devil in this legend was and about the actual deal Jack made with the Devil. For example some versions of the legend say that the deal Jack made was a short term only and do not agree on the part where Jack was denied entry into hell due to the deal but was instead denied from Hell due to the vengeful act of Satan. In some other legends, it’s God who gave Jack a turnip to light his way after being refused access to Hell.

Little Known Facts About

HALLOWEEN AND ITS SYMBOLS DID YOU KNOW? While the image of a witch riding her broomstick across a full moon is one of the more indelible images associated with Halloween, the likelihood of witnessing a full moon on Halloween is pretty slim. According to Moongiant.com, a full moon on Halloween happens an average of just once every 18 or 19 years. That means Halloween celebrants will likely only witness a full moon on Halloween five times every century. In fact, the last time trick-or-treaters went on the prowl for Halloween candy beneath a full moon was October 31, 2001. And Halloween lovers will have to wait just a little bit longer to dodge evil spirits in the light of a full moon, as Moongiant notes the next time a full moon is slated to appear on October 31 is not until 2020. DID YOU KNOW? According to Smithsonian.com, the Halloween tradition of trick-or-treating traces its origins to the Celtic tradition of dressing up as evil spirits at the end of the year. But unlike the trick-or-treaters of today, the Celts did not dress up for fun or in search of candy. According to Celtic belief, the dead and the living would overlap during the transition from one year to the next. Celts also believed that demons would roam the earth during this transition period. So Celts dressed up as evil spirts so the demons they believed were walking the earth would mistake them as one of their own. But it was not just the Celts who contributed to what Halloween has become today. Historians believe that trick-or-treating may also be rooted in the medieval practice of "souling," in which poor children would go from door-to-door on All Souls' Day and ask for food in exchange for prayers for the dead. Both Celtic traditions and the practice of souling no doubt contributed to modern Halloween traditions, but the Halloween traditions celebrants know today have been practiced for less than 100 years. DID YOU KNOW? Many people associate Halloween with children, but the day gives everyone the chance to dress up. The NRF estimates that Americans will spend more money on adult costumes than those for children.
