Giving Back To The Community LCFCA Seeks Volunteers With Recruitment Campaign By Chelsea Peifer

Jared Artus began volunteering as a junior firefighter simply because he had always loved helping people - and he loved fire trucks, too. He is now the deputy fire chief at Fivepointville Fire Company and has 24 years - and counting - of experience as a volunteer firefighter. “You have a great opportunity to make a huge difference in someone’s life, especially since 99 percent of the people are in their worst nightmare when you get there,” Artus said. While Fivepointville has a decent amount of volunteers, Artus said that like many other fire companies, its numbers have slowly dwindled. Lancaster County Fire Chiefs Association (LCFCA) Recruitment and Retention Committee spokesman Duane Hagelgans said that while some stations do very well, most are struggling to have and maintain enough members to provide adequate service.

The Lancaster County Fire Chiefs Association launched a recruitment campaign this year in an effort to meet

See Volunteers pg 6 the growing need for volunteer members of the 67 fire departments and companies throughout the county.

Susquehanna Heritage, NPS Partner To Reach Students Susquehanna Heritage and the National Park Service (NPS) recently completed their third Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Trail (Chesapeake Trail) field trip season for local fourthgrade students. Each year, Susquehanna Heritage receives funding from the National Park Foundation’s Every Kid in a Park initiative in cooperation with the NPS to offer the program to schools at no charge. The field trip was initially developed by Jerry Schenck, a fourth-grade teacher from Wrightsville Elementary School who participated in the NPS See Junior Rangers pg 6

Wrightsville Elementary School students recently visited the Susquehanna Heritage Zimmerman Center for Heritage as part of the Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Trail field trip season. The students completed the National Park Service Junior Ranger Activity Book and were sworn in as Junior Rangers, bringing the program’s total to 1,015 students taking the Junior Ranger pledge.

“The Music Man” To Return To SSC By Chelsea Peifer

Meredith Willson’s “The Music Man” was the very first show produced by the Susquehanna Stage Company (SSC) in the summer of 2009. In honor of the theater company’s 10th season, it will be presenting the beloved musical once again. “It was a good show to start the company, and we’re repeating some of the famous things we did in the past,” noted director Jim Johnson. Eight cast members will repeat their roles from the first SSC production of “The Music Man,” including Mount Joy resident Sharon Boyer, who will portray Mrs. Paroo. “It was a lot easier to learn my lines. Remembering how I did it the last time is helping me now,” Sharon said. Playing Mrs. Paroo again is a welcome task for Sharon, who described her character as a fun and opinionated person. Mrs. Paroo’s daughter, Marian, will be played by Stacia Smith of Harrisburg. Marian, a librarian, is among the See “The Music Man” pg 3

Stacia Smith (left) and Nick Smith will portray Marian Paroo and Harold Hill, respectively, in the upcoming production of “The Music Man” at Susquehanna Stage Company in Marietta.

Lancaster County community members were sworn in by the Hon. Jeffrey Reich as Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) volunteers on May 31 in the ballroom at Emerald Foundation Community Campus in Lancaster. The new volunteers join more than 200 others who have been trained and are advocating for foster children in the county’s dependency court system. CASA volunteers help to ensure that the children’s needs are recognized and best interests are considered both in the courtroom and in the community. CASA of Lancaster County trains volunteers to be qualified, compassionate advocates to fight for and protect a child’s right to be safe, to be treated with dignity and respect, and to learn and grow in the security of a loving family. CASA volunteers meet regularly with the child and interview people in the child’s life, including social workers, attorneys, teachers, doctors, and mental health professionals. The new volunteers include Rick Groff, Lancaster; Karyn Heichel, Lancaster; Jocelyn Mylin, Willow Street; Mary Beth Schweigert, Lancaster; Yvonne Tejada, Lancaster; Holly Mutchler, Lititz; Judy Swarthout, Elizabethtown;

town members who do not quite believe the story that is told by smooth-talking con man Harold Hill when he arrives in tightknit River City, Iowa, and attempts to convince them he is a talented bandleader. He sets out to recruit folks to form a band - only to pocket the cash he receives for instruments and uniforms. Harold Hill - the Music Man himself - will be portrayed by Nick Smith of Harrisburg. Harold’s problems escalate as he finds himself becoming attached to the townspeople and falling in love with bombshell Marian, and he must decide whether to skip town or tell the truth. Stacia, who is married to Nick in real life, said that she feels lucky to have the chance to play across from her husband in the production. Tackling the role of Harold has been fun for Nick, who said that his character’s tendency to be a big dreamer is easy to relate to, but the con man aspect, not so much. “We have a large cast filled with a lot of good talent, and it’s a really good community show,” Nick shared. “It’s really special to be a part of.” Sharon echoed those thoughts, noting that the music throughout the duration of the production will have audiences captivated. “It’s just one of the best all-American shows. All of the music is good, and the leads are spectacular,” commented Sharon. “The Music Man” cast will also include Dale Boyer, Josh Kulp, Kevin Allen, Jim Herrick, Steve Sturgis, John Zimmerman, Tom Felgen, Jason Spickler, Jered Mackison, Paige Fairbanks, Hayden Bires, Linda Boozer, Charis Alkinburgh, Emma Antonacci, Darlene Hein, Janet Josephson, Ali Fleming, Lorraine Ford, Ray

support early learning programming for young children in the communities served by Luthercare for Kids. The Marietta location, within a state-of-the-art space inside Community Bible Church, opened its doors on June 4 and is providing services for children 6 weeks old through preschool. The center will also offer a before- and after-school program for the 2018-19 school year. The partnership enables Luthercare the opportunity to collaborate with two school districts - Columbia and Donegal to combine resources toward the common goal of equipping children with a strong education foundation that will provide them with the skills they need to be successful in school and life. Luthercare for Kids - Marietta is one of four centers operated by Luthercare for Kids in Lancaster and Lebanon counties. Each Luthercare for Kids location is a state-licensed center and participates in Pennsylvania’s quality initiative, the Keystone STARS program. Luthercare for Kids offers Early Head Start and Pre-K Counts programming.

Since 2005, Luthercare has operated Luthercare for Kids Columbia within space at the Columbia School District Administration Building. That location reduced services on June 1. Services for infants, toddlers and preschoolers moved to the Community Bible Church location. The school-age summer program will operate at the Columbia location until the 2018-19 school year begins, at which time the Columbia location will close. Before- and after-school care will begin in Marietta at the start of the new school year. For more information about Luthercare for Kids - Marietta, readers may contact Jamie Reichenbach, director of early learning, at 717-604-1865 or jreichenbach@luthercare.org, or they may visit www.luthercare forkids.org. The Mayor’s Commission to Combat Poverty’s One Good Job strategic plan to cut poverty in half in Lancaster City by 2032 cites a Franklin & Marshall College report that notes that there are “about 1,000 single, working women raising families and living in poverty.” According to the plan, connecting these women to full-time employment at sustainable wages would reduce poverty in Lancaster City by 20 to 25 percent. To that end, the Community Action Partnership (CAP) will kick off a public relations and action campaign designed to encourage women to consider new or different possibilities when thinking about their careers. Attendees included residents, family members, donors, business partners, employees and neighbors. Speakers included Larry Zook, president and CEO, and Beth Trout, vice president of advancement. Providing fire prevention training at schools and watching the children’s excitement is another part of volunteering that Breneman loves. “You feel a sense of purpose when helping to serve the community, and I’d love to see more young people volunteer, Breneman said. Most fire companies offer junior membership opportunities for students age 16 and older. Artus and Breneman both praised the camaraderie at their respective fire stations. “The fire service is a camaraderie and a brother and sisterhood, Hagelgans remarked. “We are a family, and we will be your family. To learn more or sign up to volunteer, readers may visit www.becomeafirefighter.org.

The campaign has also included advertisements on the internet and television and at movie theaters, with radio ads coming soon. “If we can find people to give a little, we can all work together for the safety of our communities, said Hagelgans, adding that individuals should not feel like they are signing up for a lifetime commitment either - just a few years will make a difference. Plus, Hagelgans emphasized that not all volunteers run into burning buildings. Willing individuals are needed to help with

“Some municipalities are seeing a need and must pay for firefighters; (however), there are many municipalities in Lancaster County that can survive and provide adequate protection with volunteers, if we have enough members of our communities willing to make the sacrifice to help their neighbors, Hagelgans stated. Earlier this year, several Lancaster County volunteer firefighters and rescuers shared their experiences in on-camera interviews for videos as part of an ongoing countywide recruitment effort led by the LCFCA to draw in volunteers for the county’s 67 volunteer fire companies and search-and-rescue squads. For Lisa Breneman, who volunteers with Fire Department Mount Joy, it was seeing her father volunteer that sparked an interest in her. “Initially, I had approached it to just become a driver only and help them get out during daytime calls, explained Breneman. That soon grew into an interest to do more than drive, as Breneman said she wanted to learn how to run in and assist those who were injured, and help extinguish the fires. That interest eventually led into a career for Breneman, who now works fulltime as a fire investigator while continuing to volunteer locally. “It’s rewarding to help people in the community, to see that sense of relief in their eyes when you

Racial Justice Institute Part II will take place from Wednesday to Friday, July 18 to 20, from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Lancaster Theological Seminary, 555 W. James St., Lancaster. The program will follow Racial Justice Institute Part I, which took place in June. The Institute will be led by cultural bridges to justice, a national consortium of trainers. Jona Olsson and Achebe Powell are two of the facilitators who have delivered the Institute to the Lancaster community for more than 20 years. Due to the intensity and the pace of the institutes, interested participants are highly encouraged to have had prior conversations and experiences regarding oppression and racism. YWCA Lancaster and the Lancaster Theological Seminary have developed this program to equip

Darrien Davenport participants with a newfound understanding of the life experiences of people of color and white people. Participants will be introduced to an anti-racist and multicultural analysis model and will leave the institute with a tangible plan of action for themselves and their change team. There is a cost to attend. To register, visit https://ywca lancaster.org/rji.
